5yrs behind again? When can Android finally overthrone iOS?
Now Google and Microsoft are jealous.

I would say it is, yes. But it also shows something else: The power of Apple marketing. Siri used to be an app in the store, and nothing. Then Apple buys the company, touts Siri as some "revolutionary" thing they created, and look at what's happening - suddenly Siri is the best thing since sliced bread and all other vendors should fear it. Yeah right. If you ask me, Siri is a fad that will quickly blow over. Even with Apple's marketing.
Joke, may be you haven't seen the power of SIRI, it is just I always see my sister talking to her phone and she said it is very useful especially when sending email, he will just say "send mike an email, Can you put up the dialyzer so I can start to dialyze when I got there tomorrow" she does not need to go in the mail app, look for the email addresss, click on the message box and type the message, same as text, I think it is not that useful, but now that I saw my sister doing that, I think I might sell my Infuse 4g and try the 4s, come on I did not post this to hurt your egos which now obviously hurt because you bought an Android device, I too bought Infuse 4g but I am open on any device that will benefit me.
The difference between me and some guys here, I am open minded on what will benefit me, and some guys defend Android like it is their company and want to beat Apple, Rim, and Window phone 7. And they don't want to let people speak that they made a mistake buying Android or they just love their android.

totally agree with this post. Until google puts more thought into the UX it will be behind imo. It has all the features but they're so haphazardly tossed together that using it is a chore.
As much as it is kinda cool in the right situations I see this being just another reason to own a cell signal jamming box. People are already rude enough to make a call while in speaker phone.
Text from my friend,
"If you dont my floorspace I think there's a lot of room in my room as I got a big corner suite so gay just to buy the best thing to me the room only has one bed and is also one clean so club club at so"
"Damn Siri"
Android is FAR AHEAD OF Apple.

You should upload a screenshot of that!
Yes I know when I used the mic button on my Android Infuse 4g it ends up like that, it will never understand how you speak, unlike SIRI you can even correct the word you say even you say it the wrong way just correct it, the next time you say it on your accent it will understand it, or may be that is how your friend speak, tell him to take english class online, it is cheaper online.
Have to admit... It is quite accurate..
I used it at a busy apple store, and it still heard me!

I sure hope SIRI isn't submitting your posts, because if that's the case it's completely worthless.
You do realize SIRI is just an app right? If you think an app can put apple 5 years ahead of android, none of your posts should be taken seriously. In my opinion, the SUPERUSER app puts android infinitely ahead of apple. Android has personal assistant apps, and I am quite sure the developers will be working hard on them now. Apple has nothing to the likes of Superuser and never will.

You just quote and quote, obviously you don't read, I don't have an iPhone 4s yet i have infuse 4g, i am on the edge, next time read every post completely so people will even have a chance to may be think, your reply make sense. And SIRI is not an app now, you can't buy it on appstore if you have an iPhone 4, you need more knowledge about tech, obviously you are outdated
Ok I am just going to throw it out there. Please just hold the waves of "can't" and "not gonna work" negativity is just a waste. There are ways to get your voice heard that have worked for me in the past and here is my suggestion. The more the merrier!
Problem is Verizon put a encrypted bootloader on the Samsung Galaxy S3. The bigger problem and the angle we should have is they sold it to us with out letting us know their difference. News of the other S3's sold around the world painted a clear image of what we were getting into... "The same phone." Samsung had used their brand to deliver one device between all networks. Yes there were some cpu changes due to networks but that was noted everywhere. Verizon always note differences in how great there network is and the plus's in their service over others but nothing on the one change they had done to the Galaxy S3 vs the entire world. Obviously because its a negative. Their sales model was we are selling the Galaxy S3 and since we thought we were getting the same product we ordered it. Thats pretty big. Complaining here on xda I think is a waste.., the petition... I did sign btw but unfortunetly is just noise to Verizon. Everyone has to call with the general attitude of being frustrated like they have not been honestly sold a product and that trust was broken.
Don't get mad, don't start going threatening to jump ship... say that this really has broken our trust, don't mention technical info or just lightly because they are not going to have a clue. Say that they made no mention anywhere nor any employee informed you that their device was locked down vs any other and that they do a great job of letting you know market, network, and service differences but didn't lift a finger to let you know about the phone difference being a negative. Lastly listen to what they say as frustrating as it may be and say you want to find a way to rectify this what ever it takes.
Don't make calling your daily task, but just call when you have time... IE ride into work, ride home. Talk to the cust rep and when that fizzles ask for a super. Hang up call again then explain the same frustration and how you even more frustrated with the crappy response the previous rep and that its not acceptable. Just keep asking who you can talk to. If half there customer support traffic is from the locked bootloader and misleading sales thats going to send a pretty good message plus everything else thats going on with news online.
Lastly you could even email them, the more the better. The whole deal here is the message needs to be going to THE MAN... Big Red. Not the message being found out by the man reading it in off of some blog. The additional traffic to their general daily cycle work will send a strong concern message but with the same message of being misleading sales starts to make it a big deal. If this goes mainstream that can be very threatening. There is no guarantee it will work but the more headlines of frustrated and upset customers is really bad for them. No business wants to be linked to upset mis-informed customers...That is a trust issue in the Verizon Name.
Side note: This refocused energy may also help the DEV work with less noise and clutter. Everyone wants to help which is cool but so many none useful comments. If it was that easy these guys would have already done it. Lets let them reverse engineer things while we use our energy usefully to stir things up on the other end.

I totally agree and I think this will catch their attention way more than anything we can do online. I'm in.
Wont do anything different. They'll tell you the same thing they told me after I filed a BBB complaint against thrm for my X2. "Your totally right our phones blow, so let me early upgrade you or do ypu want to terminate your contract for X amount of money?"

Thank you for the kind words, Its the same angle I talk to Verizon about on the 28th the day that they said the Unlimited Data was gone.. I told them that I found out from everyone but them and how they didn't inform me in any way.
We need to get more people on the non informed purchase angle. They make no mention online or anywhere. Sure Pocketnow and like sites do but they are not selling us the phone. Their image is even worse now that Corp and Tech release 2 different statements.
I really hope this gets unlocked easily because I really like the phone really nice feel to it.
This is a good approach. As someone who pitches in with customer service/support for a tech company, it's often the "nice" people who get better responses, and the quantity of requests can have a bigger affect.... way more than one angry person ranting and raving that you can just write off and ignore.
Also, it's still a person at the other end of the line. They probably are not aware of the situation or don't like it either, but it's their job. It's the people at the top that usually push down these horrible policies, the bean counters and such that don't have to deal with the angry public.
I work at a major utility. Please remember that if you call be nice to the customer service representative you are taking to. They are only the messenger, please remember that. They are not allowed too much latitude with what they can do for you. The reason for your call is logged and reviewed by the management of the company so if you call constantly and take up customer service minutes over the locked bootloader you WILL have an impact on daily business and cause management of the company to fix the problem. Calling customer service works.

Ok now we really have been miss sold. The answers I have recieved from support are well making there position worse they said that not only the bricking of devices but that these open devices would take down their data networks do to use. If that is the case why release the "Developer Edition". Everything will break lose anyway. We all pre-ordered thinking we got a unlocked Galaxy S3 and now with out any word of additional editions they try and fix things...?
Where was an unlocked phone advertised or even realistically expected?
It sucks but VZW is so big and doesn't care at all, and won't suffer much from it.
Sent from my AT&T Galaxy SIII (SGH-i747)
yes it was expected since EVER model that has been released thats att tmo sprint international korean and us cellular ALL are unlocked.
Thats it it wasn't printed that it was locked it was advertised just like the other Galaxy s3's... They were sell you the same Galaxy S3 with the same experience you would expect unless other wise noted... which it wasn't... They should just offer to unlock our phones and void the warranty. Simple fix and essentially the same thing they have done with the Developer Edition and it would save them some returns..
I am really confused... First off maybe I am using S voice wrong, but it sucks...Google Now.. so so. Now the original Google search works better than both of those and that's all I really need. Its far more accurate than SIRI and I dont need a phone to talk back to me anyway, I have a life.
Now is it me or was Google search removed?? Was it because of the Apple lawsuit? If so then why isn't it removed from all Androids? Wasn't it Google to first achieve the feature? I might be way off but that's why I am asking. Maybe someone can break it down for me thanks...
It hasn't been moved from the SGH-i535 (Verizon SG3) yet.
It no doubt will be removed in whatever OTA they send though, as it's been removed from the Sprint and AT&T versions. Yes, everybody has agreed Google had the feature before crApple, but they got a patent on searching the phone (contacts, apps, etc.) so it won't be corrected until Android 4.1 with whatever way they've worked around it.
I might add, you still will be able to search the web via the search box, just not your phone.
If we get an OTA that removes it, you can reinstall the google search apk (on a rooted device) and restore the feature.
This whole patent infringement thing is getting way out of control. Obviously Apple is scared because now that sales have been on the decline, we keep finding out of all kinds of new lawsuits. I'm ready for the video chat over data patent to come into play once iOS6 is released
I never saw it on my phone until I installed synergy... Maybe I am tripping. I am still really mad and I think I am starting to hate Apple with a passion. Why cant they just play fair? Google should have sued for SIRI. I never really minded iPhones but now I feel like breaking an iPhone!
You can use google search by finding it in the app drawer or by long pressing the menu button at the home screens.
it will not be removed by OTA, but the ability to search for things on your phone will be disabled(as bbeelzebub said earlier). It will then be a simple internet search.
As far as why it hasn't been removed from all androids, it is because Apple filed the lawsuit against samsung only, and not google. So the Samsung phones, including the galaxy nexus are getting that feature removed.
Oh I see... Well is this any true http://www.knowyourmobile.com/blog/...ved_universal_google_search_says_samsung.html ?
the story is true. because the universal search is only being removed on US variants because that is where Apple's patent is being protected. Other countries (including the UK, which is where this mistake was made) are still allowed to have the feature.
Anywhere to find the old apk? I got a replacement from Asurion and I can't search my phone now...
Seems Apple has decided making long term enemies with other companies and losing any potential customers affected by their actions is worth the short term sale.
To me, this is just them showing that Android has indeed made an impact and this is their only form of retaliation. Any little bit of me interested in getting an Apple product (computer, phone or otherwise) no matter how little interest I had in them is gone. I refuse to buy Apple for this.

This is why I hate apple. They try to control every aspect of the mobile market by patenting every little thing on their devices and not allowing other companies to even use anything similar on their devices.

So I came across my best buy receipt for my gear s2 classic. It was $380 something bucks. I began to ask myself what value I got from it I hoped for.
1) My first use case i was really looking forward to was samsung pay. But it was delayed and there is no word from samsung about its release. Im beginning to wonder if the gear s2 community will ever use it. This is a HUGE shame on samsung currently IMO.
2) I am a previous user of the gear s. I was certain the galaxy store was to offer a substantial increase in useful apps with the gear s2. There was no way to check since theres no website to browse (only in-app with gear onboarded, scumbaggish samsung). Anyways I browse the appstore every week and nothing ever happens. Its pitiful everybody is so excited for uber. One app I was certain would be available is for the Nest thermostat. Its the perfect user interface! Nope. I best thing ive seen so far is the hue app. Cheers to the dev. The gear s2 dev community needs clones of him. But overall our app selection is outrageously pathetic. I don't see it getting much better soon.
3) Why do I have to use s voice? C'mon. Samsung cant be this pretentious. Let me use google. I also thought there'd be a more seamless integration with google now. Nope. Oh yeah, ever wonder why you cant use voice to text on 3rd party apps? Because samsung locked out that ability.
I have a very good feeling that developing for the tizen smartwatch platform is an upsettingly dreadful experience. I say this because i spent four hours on a Saturday trying to get the development environment setup on OSX. I couldn't even get any sample projects to load. This trickles through. For example I really wanted to have xClock -Agent as my daily watchface but I couldn't condone it. Its affiliated android app caused alarming battery drain - and the app developer does not care one bit to correct the malbehavior. But then i ask myself why doesn't the core gear services provide an api for location so this problem wouldn't even occur? Why not for everything else? Why no S voice or be able to use any sort for speech to text for an app? I need an add on app mostly for the dumbest things. This sucks a lot.
As a product owner myself of two development teams I have been on a desperate search for the product owners of the gear s2 platform and express my concerns on that level. All leads Ive found on linkedin did not reply to my attempts at reaching out. Maybe no product owners exist, because things should not be this bad.
Anyways I would love to love this watch. The industrial design encompasses a wonderful human interface. But I don't love it because it has no soul (useable software). I hope things change. But I'm probably going back to the pebble time.
Okay.
K!
2. Google now won't happen. It is not Samsung's fault. Google does not open the access and I believe they won't. Why would they open it for competitors?
I agree with you on the app development part though. Setting up the development environment is not a trouble for me but dealing with the lack of documents, bugs in the IDE, Samsung review team and their servers are really nightmare.
Occasionally, I came across this reviewer who does not read my instruction for testing app and she rejects my apps very often. I just re-submitted one of my app for review hours ago. Another app got rejected a month ago for the third times and the problems were also their fault. I don't even bother submit it back.
Samsung servers or their Gear app store is very very unstable. Way back in the days of the Gear 2, I already saw the cannot install WO WO issue. It still exists and occur very often for customers. I receive at least 3 emails about downloading problems a day and sometimes I get 1 star rating for problems that I cannot solve.
These are just some notable issues.
So yeah, new devs won't develop apps anymore if they face similar problems. These days, I only see new watch faces submitted using the designer tool. Hardly anyone writes apps
Yeah, I agree with everything -- and just dropped dime to get a Verizon classic 3G to replace my current sport 3G.
Why? I need the 3G.
As soon as cell capabilities are offered on AW, and nothing improves on the Gear side with the issues listed (I'm a developer that walked away from development on the Gear because of the hassle), I'm gone too.
So sad, this is the second time Samsung has lured me into their watch with bad apps. Kept watch too long to take back but would if I could. I have bought numerous Samsung products and they always just move on to the "next big thing" without looking back..

Same here.. I've had s2 classic few days and is been a pain in "A"
When it disconnects I have to reboot phone and watch ... so few apps to use app store is barren
such a shame as its a lovely looking device
I'll give it to the weekend then off it goes back to Amazon if it doesn't settle down
I'm not doing too bad but my requirements aren't huge and there are things the phone is better for. I'd love to use Google - but its not an android watch and i knew that going in. I get my emails, texts, my alarm works well enough, I can answer texts with voice, my appointments and Google Reminders work. I'm pretty happy! Wish it was waterproof. Wish the alarm was stronger. But still, I'm satisfied. At least until the next big thing... I AM a gadget whore.

idiots! they really do know how to piss off their own customers dont they. I have no issue with them having it set like that as default, but i want control over my own ****ing device, that I paid a hell of a lot of money for! This is the sort of crap I would expect from Apple. There is no legitimate reason to be putting time and effort into blocking people remapping the button, it has no detrimental effect to Samsung what so ever if people want to remap it, anyone remaping it is obviously not planning on using Bixby anyway so it's not like it will reduce the usage of it, so all it is going to do is cost Samsung time and money in preventing it, and piss off a great many customers. That is the sort of move that pushes people onto other brands like Huawei and OnePlus despite their hardware not being quite as good.

We are very disappointed in this development. We understand Samsung’s motivations in wanting to make users use the Bixby button for its intended purpose, but the many tutorials available to remap the Bixby button are simply there for those users who wanted it. If Samsung didn’t want the press to report on the fact that users are seeking the remap the Bixby button, perhaps they should work to get the feature fully working out of the box first.

Statement from the dev kind of distorts reality. The ability to remap the button was crowed about before Bixby Voice was delayed. Maybe if the dev wasn't so hell bent on his or her 15 minutes of fame the mod would have flown below the radar. Samsung's investing $1B in AI so poking the bear by mutating a feature their mobile AI platform depends on perhaps wasn't the smartest of things to do. I'm probably one of the few looking forward to Bixby and Samsung Connect because I have a houseful of IoT devices and Samsung's solution(s) seem pretty cool compared to what I'm currently using.
@flar2 will do the job
For God's sake guys.. at least give Bixby a shot!.. you can still use google assistant as before by long pressing the home button. Problem with many android folks is they give up too soon and too easily on experiencing the phone the manufacturer intended. Take a lesson or two from the apple camp.
First thing I'm gonna do is block OTA updates to prevent this update tbh
Until someone figures out how to remap it.

For God's sake guys.. at least give Bixby a shot!.. you can still use google assistant as before by long pressing the home button. Problem with many android folks is they give up too soon and too easily on experiencing the phone the manufacturer intended. Take a lesson or two from the apple camp.

I'm pretty sure many people use Android because they didn't want to use Apple's whole "our way or highway" concept of design... Which is what Samsung is doing right now.

That's not the point. The point is that they are shoving it down our throats without giving us a say in the matter.

Really? You want to have "your say" in the "matter"? Are you employed by Samsung? If not, then I would suggesting becoming one if you want to have your say.
Look, I understand the whole Android, open source thing.. but the whole point about the open source is manufacturers are also free to use that source to further their own agenda.. whatever that might be. Bixby SOUNDS very promising based on everything we hear about it so far.. Who knows, it might be a lot better than google assistant and/or drive Google to make their own products better.
Think about Samsung as offering serious competition to Google in terms of the services it is aiming to provide.. and competition is a good thing.
It is incredulous to me because we haven't even scratched the surface of Bixby yet and we already want to remap buttons and complain about it.
There are other phones too you know.. and if Bixby turns out to be a flop, then I'm sure we all will have our say and Samsung will nix it or give us options.
It is completely unfair to expect Samsung to NOT be enthusiastic and committed about a Billion+ dollar investment that they are making on Bixby.

I don't work for Samsung but you sure seem to. I don't really understand why you're defending this at all. Like I said you're completely missing the point... Sure bixby might be better than google assistant, but I doubt it. Why do we need another app that does the exact same thing google assistant does? Why don't we have the freedom to bind the button to whatever we want? Competition is only possible when one provides some sort of benefit over the opposing party and I frankly don't see any benefit over using Bixby over google assistant.
Why are you complaining about people wanting to have the freedom to bind the button to whatever they want?
Not everyone is going to instantly bind it to something else.. they'll probably try out Bixby at the start. But what if we've tried it and don't like it? Why can't we have the option to bind the button to something else? You expect Samsung to return the option to bind the button to something else if Bixby fails? Oh you sweet summer child.

Honestly, I do not care if Bixby is a flop or not
Android to me has always been about option
Taking away those options takes away the whole reason to use android
If i liked a locked down phone I just as well could go with iPhone that has a great locked down OS with really amazing memory management, many games and apps build for this platform first then ported to android with various results
So yes. I for one care about my options
Options are good
Say Bixby turns out to be a great piece of software I will use it
Bottom line. Yes. Competition is great but so are options. One does not necessary take away from the other though
This is incredibly annoying to me. I may well use Bixby, but not 20 times a day. I probably won't need to use it more than once a week. I'm not really interested in either Bixby or Google Assistant. So giving it a dedicated button is ridiculous! So it is just going to sit there doing nothing except when I accidentally press it. There are other apps that I am likely to be using far more often and it just makes sense that, if there is to be an extra button, then I should be able to choose what it does.
I'd rather have it disabled than having it at all. Am I closed-minded? Sure! But I also don't give a crap and want to stick with Google Now and Assistant to do all of my bidding.
When I get this phone on Wednesday I'm going to block all OTA's and see if it can still be done. If not, I will do my best to disable it in Package Disabler Pro or whatever app is currently working.

There is always some idiot that comes along defending **** like this, it's why I just try to avoid these things in general, I just can't be bothered trying to argue with dimwits anymore, got better things to do.
Fact is, its a beyond stupid decision, and all it can do is lose Samsung customers. At a time when companies like Huawei and OnePlus are gaining rapidly, that isn't a very clever thing to do. Samsung are fast turning into Apple, forcing crap on people instead of providing it and letting them make their own choices. The difference is with apple what you have left are Apple fanboys, people that think android is too complicated for them, and above all, people that are locked in with things like itunes and dont know how to escape. The difference is nobody is locked in to Samsung so its REALLY dangerous for them to keep pissing people off like this, people can, and will, simply go out and grab another manufacturers android device instead.
As I said, I personally don't have a problem with them using that button for Bixby by default, but DO NOT tell me how to use my own device by preventing me using it how I want (particularly when there is no justifiable reason for doing it).

I'd give it a shot if it were fully developed at launch. Instead they're giving us a feature that is half baked, and won't be working 100% for at least another couple months. How stupid is that?
Then maybe Samsung's phones aren't for you? They've made no secret about locking their phones down and controlling an alternative ecosystem but yet people who hate those things buy Samsung phones anyway. Who's winng?

Exactly!.. these dimwits think that their whining and *****ing is all legitimate and somehow Samsung is wrong and doing something really terrible to them.
Samsung is NOT in the business of giving you "options" and keeping things "open".....the simple reason for that is people like you and me (and I'm including myself).. who wants things to be open with options are the VAST MINORITY..... Most people want to press buttons and have a feature available to them.. Most people WANT TO SIMPLY USE THEIR PHONES for their purposes.
We can all pound sand all we want if things aren't exactly the way we want it to be. But in situations like this.. .. a mature brain will understand that the manufacturer had different ideas that doesn't match yours and move on. .. ... or at least have the patience to wait and see how things unfolds.
I would LOVE to change the mapping of the button to whatever I want.. but I COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND where Samsung is coming from. Mind you I am an iphone user all around.. and I switch between android and ios for the sake of fun and entertainment.. and nothing else.
I don't even fault the OP for creating the thread because it is passing along news to those who were wanting to remap.. but for crying out loud.. don't buy the damn phone if that is a deal breaker for you.
Samsung is even overtaking apple in terms of number of units it is selling, so I really doubt when you bemoan and curse Samsung that it'll lose customers.
NOT HAPPENING.!.. Unless we have exploding batteries are other serious issues with the phone.. the Galaxy S8 is a runaway hit!
Samsung did not just create a separate "multi function" button. If I were employed at Samsung, I would do exactly what Samsung did... they are SERIOUSLY committed to Bixby.. hence the separate Hardware Button.. Now Mind you, Samsung is not taking away a standard smartphone button that we all can complain about.. it is an additional button.
If Bixby ends up being a complete failure, then I will be one of the guys screaming for Samsung to free up the button and make it multi-functional..
Until then..just understand that YOUR vision for how the phone should be ... does NOT match Samsung's vision..

It is ridiculous they are even attempting Bixby! S voice was much less ambitious and a total disaster.
There is so much value their resources could be delivering in other areas.; Always on display, facial/iris recognition, secure folders and even touchwiz is pretty darn good these days!
A billion dollar effort taking on Google, at one of Google's core competencies and doing it 2+ years late.

So people are dimwits because they don't necessarily agree with you on this subject? Unfortunately that doesn't hold up. The average Samsung consumer isn't on XDA or browsing the web trying to figure out how to remap a button, they're taking selfies and sending snaps. Samsung obviously isn't catering to the tinker crowd considering locked bootloaders, KNOX, and other security measures they take on their devices.
YOUR device you say... That's like financing a Bugatti and then complaining when you discover they don't give you the tools to service the vehicle yourself. Samsung created the device, they have a vision of what they feel their devices should do. Same as any manufacturer really. OnePlus just happens to be one of the more "friendly" OEM's that allow you do what you will with "YOUR" device. Their vision is different than Samsung's and vice versa. No company is perfect, but if you think Samsung cares about a handful of people on XDA complaining about a button, then I've got beach front property in Idaho to sell you.
By your reckoning Google is fast turning into Apple as well. Hell, Huawei and Xiaomi load their phones down with ridiculous skins and people still buy them. What about the millions of people that would prefer stock Android on that hardware. Those devices are THEIR own so the manufacturers shouldn't be forcing them to use such horrid interfaces. Right?

There is a difference between keeping things "open" and forcibly locking something down that only a "VAST MINORITY" of users will take advantage of. No one is expecting them to build a remapping option into the their UI.
To announce last week that Bixby will be crippled at launch, and then to spend resources this week pushing an update out to block doing something else with the button is maddening.
