What future Android versions will this phone get? - Huawei Mate 9 Questions & Answers

I am new to the Mate 9. So far I used to always run a Nexus device as my daily driver but when my Nexus 6P suffered from a "boot loop of death" I bought a Mate 9 instead.
I am wondering though: Will the Mate 9 ever get to see Android O? Or will Android 7.1 be the max for this phone?
What do you think?

I came from the nexus 6p as well. I fully expected not to get many future updates. I knew this going into the purchase.
I do think Mate 9 gets O but it won't be right away.

I'm already running Android O on it, albeit an internal developer build, so it's definitely coming.

Huawei is not known to keep their phones "up to date".
I ran a Mate2, for over a year on 4.3 JB before they updated it to 5.0LL
I bought a Mate8 in November, and it just received Android 7 last week.
I'm not that concerned though. I know going in, that unless you have an Apple
device, or a Google device, most phone rarely get updates past perhaps one
version. Huawei is no different.

Depends on which region you were in, and if you did it "officially" through the built in updater application,
or used something like Firmware finder, or, hacked your way into installing a beta.
I waited for it to hit "officially". Firmware finder never did work, although it did work for some.
I prefer the official channels.

Does it include new updated binaries in /vendor/* ?

https://plus.google.com/+PhoneArena/posts/YW3FAJ4Nihj just going to leave this here. You actually heard it from @duraaraa first

Short answer: It'll get Android O
At least its planned and its on the roadmap, and Huawei engineers are working on it.

Google Assistant in Nougat?

If we're now running EMUI 5 on our Honor 8's, is there a way of getting Google Assistant on there now?
Or is it a case of rooting and changing the Build Prop file, like I did on my old Samsung Note 3 that I flashed with an unofficial CyanogenMod 14.1 build to 7.1? I know that will screw up my warranty, and seeing as I've only had the phone 3 weeks, I'll wait...

I'm sure all those things will come to us if we just wait.
I'm not going to root and mess about with this phone. It will be the first time !
As we're getting 2 years worth of updates then I'm sure we will get all that there is available.
I am in the beta group for Android N and I got it this morning and I'm really impressed !
It totally changed the phone.
My flat mate has the pixel and since I have downloaded this latest update our honor 8 is looking better and running better than the pixel by a long way.
I have been using the two side by side and there is no way I would swap.
So in my option it's best to keep the phone as it is till the updates stop then root it.
Only my opinion !

Yeah, I agree with you. No point rushing off and causing issues with my warranty just yet. I waited 2 years before I even started flashing my old Note 3 after all, and that's only because it was stuck with Lollipop, despite being up the task of running the newer releases of Android. It's good that Huawei / Honor are allowing at least 2 years of updates to be released to their phones.
I'm gonna wait (somewhat impatiently). Google say that the Assistant will be a Pixel exclusive, but we all now they will "share the love" eventually (just so it helps them with data mining etc)..

You sound like a sensible man. I think we have a great phone and ROM to go with it.
I'm lucky that I have other phones to play with to fill my rooting needs !!
I have a S3 that I'm just flashing CM14.1 so I really have no need to mess about with this one.
I'm so impressed with this phone !!!
We made a good choice and with 4GB ram to play with I dint think we have seen even half of what they can do with it.
Cheers

Why Is Development So Slow?????

Honor 8 Is My Daily Driver. I Bought This Phone Because it was specedout and is very good but i was disappointed when i saw its development on XDA Even huawei are very Slow in keeping phone up to date.
Man!! I had s4 previously. Its development on XDA was hell of a lot better then Honor 8.
Those Days. Ahhhh!!!?
Note: Plz Open This In Browser For Voting.
I still like the phone, but as you said, the slow update process and no release of kernel source code is what will keep me away from buying Huawei/Honor devices in the future. I am still on B360 despite the B380 has been released for about 2 months now. Also, Honor promised to keep the device updated for 2 years and yet they already said Honor 8 won't receive EMUI 5.1.

As for EMUI 5.1, probably should have worded differently. Honor said that they don't plan to release EMUI 5.1 for Honor 8. Take a look at this thread and especially what johnhux7 said:
I have been taking to Honor UK on hangouts.
Honor has no plans to release EMUI 5.1 at the MO.
They also said about the promice of updates :
"The "promise" was a Honor US thing. No European countries were part of that."
They also said :
"The Honor 8 is due to get an update soon. As to what's in that again no info."
These are exact copies of what they said.
Will post more when they say more

More quotes
"We are committed to updates, we just don't want to be caught out by publishing press releases with timescales in."

Also, in case you missed it, there is a big deal right now with Huawei P10/P10 Plus regarding different performance in the same device: http://www.androidauthority.com/hua...r-lpddr4-ram-ufs-2-0-ufs-2-1-emmc-5-1-765670/

Im Also Using FD-L09 But I got Update Yesterday.
And I Recently Read an article about Emui 5.1 features and stuff, at the end of the article it was written that Mate 9 And Honor 8 Most probably will get the update first in Huawei phone series.
Plus I think Honor 8 Is still relatively A latest phone so why would they even try to not update it to Emui 5.1.
But Probably we should wait and see, what happens.
Just got OTA update, i'm not sure it is worth it, all we need emui 5.1

But It Doesnt Improves Battery life. I think So .
Huawei clearly doesn't care. They already have your money, and they don't give a damn about their customers.
This is definitely the last Huawei I'm getting. And since I'm in a position to influence others to buy new devices, I'll tell them together avoid it too.
I'm also in Canada, which is one of the few markets they actually have sales in, and use the Huawei name instead of Honor.
So they really should try to avoid having a bad rep here, but are doing nothing to have a good reputation.
At the end of the day you truly get what you pay for, and while the hardware is nice, it's cheap for a reason.
Yeah Huawei doesn't care. I received Nougat after release, but after I couldn't wait till B380, because battery issue. I didn't receive it!
Honor 8 will not receive EMUI 5.1.
I regret that I bought H8, I should buy another phone like 1+3T.
Honestly, the honor 8 is not a bad phone and I really love it. But EMUI 4.1 is horrible and 5.0 is wonderful but had the battery issue. Seriously, this phone drains 2.1% every hour for no reason when my Moto G loaded with the same app setup is draining less than 1% every hour.
The honor 8 in terms of the US model is so neglected and the lack of communication is my problem. Just heard news about the Moto z play gen 2, so you can bet I am buying that and ditching this phone, just gonna sell this and call it a day with Huawei if the updates just never come to even address the battery problem. I don't enjoy charging my phone every single day for only 12 hours of usage and 4 hours of screen on time.
For example here on my Moto G4 play I have Facebook messenger and just look at its background and foreground usage:
And the Moto g is from 3 days of usage and actually opening and using the app and interacting with chat heads.
Then here is the honor 8 which is just 12 HOURS and I NEVER even opened the app on the honor 8:
What is going on here and EMUI 5.0 is supposed to be the more power efficient one and look especially at the pier consumption, the honor 8 used so much more doing what?...
I could go on and on about the app usage differences and the draining. I have Facebook as well with the MOTO G using only 19 mAh with actually opening and using the app and playing a fee videos, while the honor 8 sits at over 200 mAh again with not even opening it.

Same here, since EMUI 5 my battery doesn't last as long as on EMUI 4.1. I think it's a global problem of A7/Emui 5.

Are we getting Android O/8.0?

Have anyone saw if we're getting update for the androod O?
The only sure thing is "updates for 2 years" we just dont know how many there will be.
I think we will be lucky if we see 7.1.X updates or EMUI 5.1 ...
After all if they give you Android 8 on Honor 8, how will they convince you to buy a new mobile in 1.5-2 years ? Its a market thing...
Same happened with OneplusX , you like it? you want more? buy a new model.
I do not believe we get the update on Android O.
Samsung keep their promise and gave android 5.1 for my old Galaxy s4.
If I couldn't receive 2 years update, I will erase the Huawei from list and Me, nor some one near me will never buy Huawei again. It's simple like that. We call it "trust". And miss using trust is a "one time" mistake.
I think we could receive it.
I personally don't it. We went five months without a simple security update. A full OS overhaul seems unlikely to me.

Not entirely irrelevant. Nougat brought native replies within notifications, that wasn't possible on Marshmallow (without Xposed). If Huawei's customizations bring the same or comparable features to an older version, I can live with that, but they don't always.

Agreed, though their target market in China prefers devices that behave similarly to iOS. Thankfully EMUI5 / Nougat is much closer to AOSP than EMUI4 / Marshmallow.

I wish it will happen in EMUI 6
Personally i hope but i think not. They don't even want to update to 7.1. Think about this, they made P8 (flagship version not Lite one) with a good hardware to support android 7.0 and even 7.1 and guess what? They killed it in favor of P8 lite 2017 that comes with Nougat and the hardware is just slightly different. The P8 just receives security patch updates (at least this phone receive it, we not), nothing more. I agree with those who say is a marketing thing. Talking about our phone, i think it's capable to get 7.1 and even O but probably it will die after the "Big" update with some EMUI 5.1 features on our EMUI 5.0. If we're lucky we'll get by time some security patch updates but nothing more. I wish they can keep their promises about 2 year updates, but actually i'm pretty diffident. Hope they can show me that i'm wrong
I think Honor 8 will receive another major update.
The fact they won't update Honor 7 (Yes, compatibility issues, but still...) disappointed lots of buyers. Making the same mistake with Honor 8 would destroy the reliability of the brand. I hope they're not so stupid.

Wow thats great news
I have been away from android for like 4-5 years. If I am rooted (bootloader unlocked) on the Honor 8 and there is an update to Oreo, will I get it too, or do I have to go through a different process to get it? Like do I have to unroot and then update, or can I just update?
I hope this is true. Super excited to get Android O )
if Oreo doesnt come, we have Sunny Gusain to blame

I'd say instinctively that you won't get the OTA update, but if you just rooted your phone and kept the stock ROM, you might still get the update, which will most definitely unroot your phone.
Apart from that this is great news! I'm hoping for a more 'official' announcement before getting hyped up though
This is the minimum
The minimum time of updates will be reached only in August 2018, what is almost on year after Google oficial unveil. They are already delayed with security updates.
I called Honor USA and they said they knows nothing about it, he just said all the Huawei device that came last year and this year will probably get it, honor 6x and another upcoming honor(didn't say me the name) will also get it. Unfortunately they knows nothing about honor 8.
Also I contacted huawei saudi and they said YES! Check the screenshot...............

I don't trust them.
Hell, it's likely that those people don't even work for Huawei. I would just as soon call the grocery store down the street and ask them if my phone will get Oreo.
I read article on gadgetraid about Huawei updates to android Oreo and they mentioned that Honor 8 will be updated to Oreo after all flagship devices of 2017 like Mate 10, P10, Honor 8 Pro. The schedule date for our Honor 8 is still unknown, but until next year is left only 2 months so expect update to android 8 in 2018 on Honor 8 in 8th of let's hope May. :fingers-crossed:

Android 9 Pie

With this finally being released, do you think we'll get the update on our devices or will we be stuck on Oreo
Sometime next year maybe.
Of course the P20 Pro will get Android 9. It would be a huge embarrassment for Huawei if it didn’t. I‘m pretty confident it will happen, maybe even in late 2018. I‘m secretly also hoping for Android 10.
I hope it does, but with how Huawei updates phones I have feeling we may not see it anytime within the next 6 - 12 months. Look at the mate 10 Pro, still no Oreo 8.1 and how long as that been out.

When I spoke to an Huawei rep they said we're guaranteed one major update so technically yes, we will get Android 9.
I got Oreo on my mate 9 one year later in dec 2017. So I presume we will get pie by April 2018.
This is their reply (UK) when asked about if for P20 Pro and Mate 10 Pro
I have verified and currently we do not have information if the two devices you mentioned will receive the Android P update

I love the P20 pro but i can't go with Huawei ever again they're just like motorola with updates its always "if or when" they decide, i can't see why they don't let us get it via a beta programme or something.
They have beta programs in China. Club.Huawei is quite an active user base and new features get tested by the members' beta program. Unfortunately, non-chinese Huawei-IDs can not enter the beta.
Here is the thread (attn: chinese obviously): https://club.huawei.com/thread-16854269-1-1.html
We'll get it by Q4 of 2018.
I have my p20 pro for three months and I have got 3 updates. One every month. 128 the day I opened it, 131 the next month and now 152. What delays?? What more to ask.??

Well,
If you didnt count a major update (like oreo to pie), i alreary update my P20 pro 7 times,
From initial .103 to .152 now. With august security update. So i guess, there's no delay in that regards.
Huawei is absolute crap when it comes to Android upgrades, even for their latest and greatest phone.
Genuinely don't expect to see anything until early to mid 2019. Just pray for ROM development is all.

But a lot of users in UK who have received the C782 model aren't getting these updates and thus reason why they are not happy about the update process. It's luck if you got the C432 model and Huawei won't advise which resellers are selling them.
Lucky we've just received update with July security fixes, prior to that we got one last month with June's update and the update before that was the update that included April's security fixes.
They should have just released one version of the phone for all markets so everyone got same updates.

I doubt their priority for updates are top of their list.. they rather pump out new phones... thats why I would never use another samsung phone... Huawei looks a little better.. updates every 2 month.. haha samsung was like 3-4 months.. almost 8months for 8.0 to come out for the S7

The Mate 10 Pro is still on 8.0 and it was released November last year and is classed as flagship device, yet only had 2 updates this year which included March and June Security updates.
So probably won't get 8.1 until earliest November and 9 sometime next year.
As for P20 Pro with the new Mate 20 imminent then we won't see an update on the device until after that is released and probably not till next year.
