We already knew the sensors are different than the S7-series (Sony IMX333 vs. IMX260 and ISOCELL S5K2L2 vs. S5K2L1) and that Samsung tweaked the s/w including enhanced image processing which takes three pictures and combines them in to a single image every time you snap the shutter. Here are some pics Notebookcheck took at the launch event using a S7e and S8. I guess we'll see how the new cameras perform when sites like DxOMark and GSMArena do their objective testing.
Here's what Notebookcheck said...
The low-light photos we took with the S8 at the launch event looked a bit clearer, brighter than and not as noisy as the photos of the Galaxy S7 Edge.

More comparison with S7. Image quality improved from S7.

Not improved, immensely improved!!! the new best camera, make sure you use 100% crop or the comparasion is USELESS.

Thanks for the link, this is very interesting, S8 photos looks really better.
Until we see what Apple does, I think this will be the best camera of 2017.

It is apparently an old convention by samsung to possibly indicate the sensor type via the image ID in the exif data. See the image properties via windows explorer and navigate to details where you will find the image ID. Look for the 15-16 characters from the left. If they read "LS" = Sony IMX sensor; whereas if they read "LL" = Isocell sensor. See the screenshots below for clarification.

That happens when the exif data is missing (or removed from the image) as in case of compressed images. You will need to download the full size original image files from the website (save it to your pc) and then look for the image ID.

I am curious as well. I'm a sony fan myself but apparently since the last gen galaxy smartphones samsung Isocell have really stood up to (if not beaten) the sony IMX sensors in overall performance .
Really did improve.. Check out this video comparison
So...did anybody compare the new imx333 and the new slsi? How to they stack up? Is there any real difference?

Mine has QS code for both, front and back, so not sure what to make out of it. Phoneinfo hardware list shows Sony sensors, but do not know how accurate that is.

Which one you did you get? Mine will arrive by 5-10th of may (exynos S8+) and will probably have the Samsung sensor in it, which I totally don't mind, as it is definitely better than my last S7 (sony imx260) and S7 edge (Isocell) camera outputs.
@pete4k I'm pretty sure you have the sony one. Can you please upload a screenshot of the details of image properties showing the Image ID (of any photo clicked by your phone rear and front camera)? Alternatively, you could upload a full size camera sample pic at drive and share it here, if you don't mind.

Looks like they've changed LS (15-16th letters) to QS in your case. Maybe a hardware revision / region specific code?! Anyhow, the difference was and is in the 16th letter. My guess "S = Sony" else I have no clue!

I got the isocell and i have mixed feelings about it. I compared as much as could the old s7edge imx with the s8 isocell and i found the following: s8 has a very agressive noise reduction in low light shots, so agressive that sometimes kills detail. S8 has a slighly better wb but also favours red a bit too much. Sometimes people's faces look like they just got off a treadmill ) too red. Outside, at night you get a red fringe instead of a pure black sky.
These are specific isocell problems that plagued last year's s7 and by the looks of it they are still here. Lucky the ones who got the sony even if the wb is a bit warm every time on imx

Sure, tried every mode available! Let me upload a similar iPhone 5 pic, hold on.
I also noticed the pictures weren't what I expected.
They tend to blur quite easily.
I'm hoping a software update will sort it.
It's a 13MP camera, you're either doing something wrong or your camera is bad.

I agree with the poster, ive had many phones and by far the note 3 has the worst photo quality ever, im really dissapointed for a ~750 euro device to have such a bad camera. 13MP looks nice in the specs but numbers is not everything.
To me it looks like there is some kind compression on the image, maybe the firmware has some kind of compression method to keep the camera up to speed for zero shutter lag.
Hope samsung will look into this and give us an update in the camera firmware.

Yes you are right, the bright and especialy daylight pictures are pretty nice, but when things get dark or far away they smudge out. You can see it happen in the bottom 2 pictures in that post, the last 2 are obviously lower quality than the flowers for example.

What do you expect? The camera has a 1/3" sensor, a FX SLR has ~28 times the sensor area. This means that you would need 28 times the light (or time) to shoot a photo with same quality.
This is not possible because in the conditions where your photo was shot you would need a tripod and long exposure (which is not useable on moving objects) to make a photo which has comparable quality like an outdoor picture!
Anyhow, I have the N3 for one day now and I am happy with it so far, especially with the better camera!

Well it does have to do with the megapixels because the more you have the less the typical blur will be visibly apparent as a result of movement, which seems to be the case here, whether that be movement by you or the subject.

It isnt blur, it's the denoise that samsung is using. This is a software issue, among other things obviously. Whether or not they fix it I have no idea.

Until manufacturers either quit trying to outdo each other with more megapixels on the same size sensor, lower the megapixels on the same size sensor (like HTC did with the One), or increase the sensor size (such as Apple just did with the 5s), low light photos are going to have more and more noise. The smaller the pixel, the less light it captures, which results in worse low light performance.

in addition there is photo on the mi forum that confirms this. i wish i could insert link and image .

Whatever camera sensor the Mi 4c have my guess is that it will probably perform like Mi 4 and Mi 4i, that are above average, good but not excellent (at the level of Samsung S6 or LG G4 for instance).

The small hole next to the camera is a noise cancelling microphone. I'm not exactly sure what consequences will occur if you cover it with a case... I probably wouldn't cover it, but I guess it's not a very critical component.

Unfortunately, Aida64 doesn't show information about the sensor.. I wonder if there's a way to know it.
I think there might be a way to find it by looking in the "/sys/bus/i2c/drivers/" folder. There are a number of folders here, but one of them is the sensor I think (at least for some other android devices)
In my HTC One X, I got a folder named ov8838, which is my sensor. Maybe someone with a Mi4c can have a look if you find anything similar?

Yes I'm using Moto G 4G right now. There's a total of 10 folders called 'ov' or 'imx' so I don't really know which are the right ones. I'll look on my Mi4c once that I have it!
so seems like my front facing camera won't focus. it only has a set focus for whatever is in the background and will NOT focus on a face. it's absolutely awful. whatever is in the foreground is blurry and there's no options in the new Samsung cameras to adjust exposure or anything which also makes making some videos on the ffc suck. anyone else having this issue? my note 4 ffc was much better than this one. ugh.
Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
I have the same problem with mine. I thought it was because of the beauty filter.
maybe it's just how this camera is. pardon my ugly mug, but here's a great example. notice it's focusing on the background. it honestly seems just like it's a problem where it's focusing on infinity rather than what's in foreground. maybe a software tweak can fix it? I really don't want to return the damn phone because of this...

I also noticed this when i compared my s6 with my s7.
The s6 when I'm closer to the camera is crisper than the s7 but when I hold my arm strait the s7 wins almost like it finds the sweet spot, the s6 behaves smilar but like i said more crisper up close.
Both cameras show the face detect cirkel.
Could be an issue with the new 3D beauty filter maybe? (And yes i have turn both down to zero)

sounds cool. the quality is WORSE in low light, and it's very oil painty looking, which i presume is the processing..however, they don't give you raw features for FFC..they don't even let you adjust exposure which pisses me off, bc i used my note 4 to record guitar videos for youtube, and the FFC looked fine on the note, but it's so overexposed on the s7 it sucks.
front facing cameras don't support auto focus, they have a Fixed-focus lens, & since the sensor is so small there is no bokeh(blur), so its focus distance is set to infinity, that's why it looks a bit blurred when you are too close to it

Thats because its has a very wide f/1.7 aperture, it will give some blur at very close distance, since its focus distance is set to infinity
the note was f1.9. not that big of a difference to create such a drastic difference in quality.

Tested two S7 and both was blurry and looked lika filter all over the picture.
Then i tested two S7 Edge and they was crisp sharp, better than my S6.
Both the S7 and the S7 edge had the same camera sensors. Forgot to check FW version but since it is the sames sensors in both the s7 and s7 edge it may be a FW diffense.
What is your FW version on the s7 edges front camera.
hmm very interesting! I wonder if it's a firmware issue then. why would the edge have a different firmware than the s7 though?

there's a video of ffc. you can see how blurry the guitar is compared to the background.
just installed it on my V20, both camera works, front and back,
don't know how to switch to wide lens. so 2 out of 3 lens works.

I can verify hdr+ is processing photos. However whether it is actually doing anything is a different test for another night. At face value they look pretty good.
You won't be able to access the wide angle with anything other than stock lg camera.
Now is this using the normal rear cam lens on custom roms? One of my biggest reasons for staying stock-based is the wide lens camera is the only one used when on aosp roms, and you didn't specify...
great work, however using the front facing camera I noticed that it's in wide angle mode whereas the back camera is the non-wide... can ANYTHING make the front facing camera look decent?? it's grainy as fsck with all the camera apps I've tried
Can confirm it is working with standard back facing lens

It uses the regular narrow angle lense for the back.
front camera in video mode will use narrow angle, wide angle for photos.
I took some low-light photos with both the Google and LG cameras to compare the results. With HDR turned off, the google camera produces noisy photos. With HDR on, sometimes the google camera looks a little better, but not always. The google camera produces warmer colors, but I think LG looks more accurate. The LG camera also seems to retain more detail in darker parts of the image, maybe because it tends to use a higher ISO. The LG camera is also faster.

Now is this using the normal rear cam lens on custom roms? One of my biggest reasons for staying stock-based is the wide lens camera is the only one used when on aosp roms, and you didn't specify...

Yeah, no it doesn't. Had some time this weekend and it still uses wide for the back. LS997

Weird on my h918 it uses the regular lenses. I'm running a custom rom but don't see why that would matter
It's a pleasure to use on LineageOS. I'm sure it is close to stock LG photo quality. I use the included camera app for rear wide angle and 4k video though.

Me neither. Guess the smallest difference is enough. Would think camera hardware and software would be the same... Oh well. It DOES produce better photos, tho.
works fine on my v20 stock , bar the wide angles lens
I will take same pictures and post here for comparison later today. In a early test, I found mixed results.
Seems to me the manual camera can still produce better pictures, but google auto mode is better than LGs.
Can you guys share same pics too?
EDIT.: Pictures in my office. Google camera with HDR+ is brighter and seem to have more detail than LG in manual mode but has less accurate colors.

I've tried both. Not sure what difference the SD optimized one does. They both work

You are probably using LUX auto brightness or another app that draws above other apps.

Oh you're right, thanks for the answer
I'm opening this topic to get this information to all S23/S23+ users.
We have a serious problem with the camera and Samsung has come to say that it is a feature and so far Samsung has been washing its hands and not pronouncing itself, not even issuing a statement about this problem.
Is your S23 good? Vote!
Almost 6 years separate the OnePlus 5T from the S23+ and still, the 5T gets better definition and focus, despite the fact that the 5T already has enough problems with the Camera.
But Samsung continues to say that it is a function and characteristic of the lens of the S23+ what is clearly seen in the "banana" effect is a circle of blur, perhaps not because of the sensor but because of the poor construction of the lens. I, like many others, feel cheated for having bought the S23.
Look at the photos and draw conclusions.

OnePlus 5T
Samsung S23+
5T vs S23+
Yes. Very bad photos if you dont hold the phone completeley still. Also in apps like snapchat, it takes 2 seconds to capture the photo, which is often completely blurred (not out of focus, but a preview of two secs before tapping the shutter button)
S23 (non +) user here. My phone's been suffering from the very same issue and in 90%+ of all the photos I have taken with it so far you can clearly spot the 'banana-spahed' blur at first sight without having to pixel-peep.
The phone itself is amazing.. yet the cameras turned out to be a huuuge letdown. Never seen such inconsistent, over-sharpened and over-processed images before. And then there's the blur which ruins pretty much every image taken (even more). My 2016 LG G5 takes better and sharper images than my S23..
Can someone that also uses snapchat confirm my issue please? It can't be just me...

Sure
My S23 256mb arrived yesterday and today I returned it!
It had horrible focus and the bananagate effect too!
My old Honor 8 from 2016 focus better on close subjects than S23.
I refuse to believe this is normal on a 2023 flagship!

It's sad to say, but from 2020 smartphones have gotten worse and worse, the S23 is not worthy of a flagship, the camera has issues and Samsung just won't admit it.

Draw your own conclusions
Yep that's what I've experienced too!
I tested the S23 against my Tablet S8+ / Pixel 6a / Honor 8 and all of them took clean focused pictures of documents. This situation is important to me because I digitalize a lot of documents like this.
The Samsung official position about this is that it is a normal effect and for this kind of utilization we must take the photo using the 2x or 3x option with the phone far from the paper. I refuse to believe this.
But even assuming that the 2x or 3x method solves it, this problem does not end here (on close up shots) because there are reports of image blur in the same sensor place (left side when in landscape) when shooting normal daily photos.
Another report I did read but did not test, is that if we put that same A4 paper on a wall (instead of a table) and take the photo with the phone vertically, the banana effect does not occur! Can anyone test this scenario? If this is true it blows out of the water the theory of 2x/3x and takes it to a mechanical problem due to gravity orientation of the sensor or other camera component.
I have been using my S23+ for two months now and no issues on camera like that...

The country where your device was made is printed on the box, on the sticker where you can also see the IMEI.
PT: amigo está na caixa, na etiqueta onde se pode ver o IMEI
Well I don't have that kind of issues. Images are all good and focused (no blur on the side), only in snapchat it has some kind of shutter lag for like 2 seconds.
