Phone settings accidentally disabled/disappeared in Oneplus One - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have looked through this forum and in the net as well, but no one have seemed to face this particular problem. To put it bluntly, I do not have a phone settings right now! By "settings", I mean the setting where you can scroll down to "About Phone" and click android version repeatedly till it says "You are now a developer". It all happened when I saw a notification saying "This app can harm your phone - Settings" and an option to disable. I was unable to slide this notification off, and while trying, I accidentally clicked the disable option. Nothing happened, just the notification disappeared. I panicked and restarted the phone. Immediately after that, I saw that my settings icon is gone. I cannot go to settings from the pull down drawer, neither I can find it in my apps. It was there before. My phone is not rooted and not updated, and the first thing to do, I think, is to do a factory reset. I am backing up files now. I am also reading Heisenberg's How-To Guide For Beginners, but as a noob, I am scared that I will mess up. If anybody can help me with some advice, how to get the phone settings back (preferably without rooting, but if push comes to...you know!), please do. Also, if I long press home button, and try to click "Themes", it says "Unfortunately, Trebuchet has stopped working". I instlled Nova launcher, but phone settings are still missing. I would really appreciate any help. Thanks.

Factory Reset worked !

tht is bizzare.. coz after looking at what you wrote there, the exact same thing happened to me an hour ago! im now also without a setting icon and cant find a solution!

it happen to me too today.

I just had the same misfortune as you did.
I'm pretty sure the culprit is "Google Settings". It kept giving me a notification saying that "settings" is harmful, do you want to disable it? I accidentally clicked YES after a few weeks ;( .
Guys please help. I had disabled USB debugging a few days back and forgot to turn it back ON.
I'm really stuck now. Also I can't do a factory reset because I have important data in my mobile and I'm unable to take a backup. My device is a OnePlus One and its not rooted. It has TWRP recovery installed.
Please help.

this happened to both my phones too. how were you able to do a factory reset? doesn't do anything for me when I hold power and volume down. takes me to a black screen.

This did it! It fixed my phone back to 100%. I initially thought it was a storage memory error or other h/w related issue.
Very strange that the google settings app suddenly started detecting 'Settings' app as being harmful on 4.4.4 Kitkat now after 3 years.
I have now permanently disabled app verification. Google Settings app -> Security -> Verify Apps -> disable 'Scan device for security threats'

Thanks to all for sharing. I also did one small trick after reading somewhere in this forum (forgot where....sorry). See, even after Factory reset, the notification was coming that settings app may harm your device. So I long pressed the notification (carefully, not to hit any action button) and clicked ignore

Also with me
I didn't find my settings option anywhere.

[Q] App update failed after root.

Hey there!
I've got a brand new SGS2 and I've installed a few apps on it, rooted it this morning after the installations and now, for some reason, I can't seem to update some of the apps I downloaded.
Whenever I try, it downloads the update and clicking on it says the app is not installed.
Luckily, the default apps have no problem.
Is this a common problem or did I screw something up during root?
(I do remember Odin or something had a button that allowed installation of apps or something, but I did not click it, was that needed?)
EDIT:
The button in question is in SuperOneClick and it says: "Allow Non-Market apps".
I hooked up my phone, tried clicking on it and the program hangs.
Tried it in download and Recovery mode, still hangs.
I have it on admin mode but it still doesn't work...
What can I do, please!?
(I posted this here as I did not see any support section, if I missed it, please move it over there, thanks and sorry!)
Realized the damn thing kept crashing because I kept forgetting to enable the USB Debugging mode, clicked the allow non-market apps and the process ran smoothly.
restarted the device (I've got a yellow triangle with an exclamation point on the first screen on boot, is that bad?)
Turned off debugging and it's still a no go!
I'm out of ideas, PLEASE HELP!!!

Unlock lag

i'm on the OTA lollipop, and this is what happens:
you unlock the phone by swiping upwards, and you see the homescreen. however, it takes around 1 to 2 seconds until the phone reacts to input!
so i unlock the phone and instantly start swiping left to right or tap on the screen(to change the desktops or start an app), and nothing happens up until 1-2 seconds after the homescreen is visible.
this lag makes me crazy! anyone else has this problem?

Could be the mem leak reported in other threads. I got it on occasion that when exiting apps, the homescreen has some redraw/loading of all app icons etc for a few seconds, usually a restart fixes it for a few days.
Did you do a clean install?

no, it was OTA, not a clean install.
but other than that the phone works fine, no sign of mem leak i'd say
its the same after a restart. even after unlocking the device for the first time after a restart, this lag exists on my device
I had the same problem after I flashed the OTA - fixed it with a clean flash.
If nothing else helps ( wipe cache , check for memleaks and so on ) try flashing the latest factory image.

unfortunately i didnt root when i got the phone... now a clean flash is kinda problematic because i would loose a lot of data. i will try to wipe the cache.
/edit: ok i just wiped the cache, and the lag is still there... looks like a clean flash is my last hope
As long as your bootloader is unlocked you can do it without losing anything - just do a backup from recovery . If needed manually backup your sdcard as well .
Edit : Is your device encrypted by any chance ?

You can at the very least save your settings and apps with an adb backup + google account backup ( or helium if you dont want to do it manually) , followed by a backup of your sdcard.
Backups are one of the main reason why I unlocked and rooted my Nexus from the day I bought it ( actually I unlocked , flashed factory and rooted on the bus on my way from work )
Edit : Can you try rebooting into debug mode (search for how you can do that , I believe it was by holding the power button at the power off dialog ) and see if you still have lag ? It might very well be a rogue app.

after googling, i couldnt find a single site that refers to a debug mode. all results lead to the usb debugging or the developer options.
please elaborate
and btw, holding the powerbutton while the power-off dialog is present makes the phone vibrate with the poweroff-dialog disappearing and reappearing quickly. couldnt find anything else though.

the lag still exists in safe mode... well, looks like a clean install is inevitable
Afraid that's the only thing left to do - thankfully you can backup pretty much everything so no big deal.
Make sure you have everything ready though , check stickies and the rest.

S7 EDGE Payjoy admin app removal .... help!

Hi guys,
I recently bought Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and it contains an administrative app called "PAYJOY" controlling about everything on my phone ... I tried to get into developer options to use USB debugging to root my S7 but the page appears gray. I tried nearly every app that related to remove or deactivate that admin app such as package disabler pro, app freezer ...etc I even try to delete knox app so I can get to developer options but Payjoy won't allow me to .....
ANYONE KNOW HOW TO REMOVE THAT ADMIN APP, I really appreciate any HELP!
Thanks in advance

You can reset from recovery, power off phone, press and hold volume up + power + home till you get in recovery mode, there you can reset. Make sure you know account and password of google account and samsung account that is set on phone. This can be required by phone after reset is done

Try using Adhell 2 to disable it.
Was able to remove PayJoy via Android remote wipe request. No sign of PayJoy now on the S7 but in recovery it still refuses to wipe saying MDM prevents it. But in Android there is no more sign of PayJoy. How to remove the last remnant which shows itself when trying to wipe via recovery?
How did you do the remote Wipe thing ?
PayJoy App Removed
*REMOVE PAYJOY APP*
1.) Go to settings - lock screen and security and set a pin.
2.) they will leave a menu now that says (Secure Lock Settings), they enter there and there is an unchecked option that says Auto factory reset. Basically what that sentence does is that when you put the pin 15 times wrong the phone automatically does a factory reset.
3.) They have to turn off the screen and turn it on again to put the wrong pin 15 times. the first 5 times are going to be followed and they will have to wait 30 seconds, the second 5 times the same, and the last 5 every time they do they will have to wait 10 and 30 minutes each time, but once they have put the wrong password 15 times the phone magically it will reboot and will do the factory reset removing them from the mdm mode and removing the famous manager of the phone.

Payjoy app help....

Got phone financed thru payjoy, it was cool until i realized how much control the app actually had, as stated in previous threads cannot change any options as a device administrator, and all developer options are grayed out except oem unlock, demo mode, Include bug report. Tried the master reset from recovery, states MDM doesnt allow... Come on already lol, HHHHHEEEEELLLLPPPPPP.
I wouldn't recommend it to be honest. It probably checks in with their servers regularly. They might come looking for it if it stops xD
Ok actually I have found a way to not only disable it but delete it, getting rid of it completely. I did it on my Note 5, message me

Why not just post the method here for everyone to use?
Pretty sure it involves setting screenlock security to reset the device after 10 wrong login attempts, then forcing those wrong attempts one after the other until the device factory resets itself
No actually it doesn't, it's been awhile see if I can refresh memory, after I figured it out, I thought wow how simple
If I remember correctly, in the security section of settings, there is a selection you can mark that forces a factory reset upon restart of device, therefore getting the pay joy as a device administrator. Then use a file manager, and find the com.app folder and delete the rest
This worked for me on a Samsung J7 Pro (G610M). Just enable OEM unlock at developer options!
1- Go to settings - lock screen and security and set a PIN lock, like 1234..
2- You will se a menu (Secure lock Settings), click on it and set "Auto factory reset". This opcion will factory reset your device after 15 wrong attempts to unlock the Screen.
3- Turn OFF the Screen and enter wrong the PIN code 15 times on your device, the the Phone automaticaly will reboot and it will perform a factory reset by it self. When it turns ON the "PLay Joy" will be erased.

Newbe help request S5

First off, I'm going to apologize if this is the wrong place to request help.
I've spent a few hours looking around the site, and also doing Goolge searches and have run out of ideas.
The phone worked before I tried to do a "wipe" of it before giving it to my daughter, and now it's in this "bricked" state.
To do a "wipe" - I tried the "hold the power button, vol-down, and Home Button", then selected "volume up" to continue, and it just hung waiting for an image. I have not tried to flash a phone in at least 5 years, so I was going off an internet search on how to wipe the phone, in what I assumed was just a data wipe, and it looks like I put it in the mode of writing out a new ROM image. After waiting 30 min's I figured I'd screwed the phone up and pulled the battery out of it to see if it would recover.
When I use Oden3 to try and load files to the phone, it see's the phone, however, fails to write any images.
I've used the PB1_G900V_DEBRICK.IMG file and made an image on the SD card, however, it's not showing as an SD boot option when trying to re-flash.
I've attached some pictures of what it does, and as of now, it will only allow me to try and upload an image, or drop to the Verizon splash screen and stall there.
Thanks,
Denis

Your actions do not contain anything that may screw the phone up.
If this is the whole story, of course.
What you needed to do when decided to wipe the phone:
1. Go to security settings and turn Reactivation Lock OFF.
2. Go to backup and restore settings and perform a factory reset.
So simply boot the phone to system and do it.
Or this is not the whole story?
I'm thinking it's not the whole story
Thanks for getting back to me, here's a bit more information that may be helpful. The Phone was set to the "default" user settings before I started trying to wipe it, and I don't think I've been successful with any flashing or anything. I had not used the phone in about 2 years, so once I reactivated the SIM card I started performing the OTA updates, after the third or so update, I decided to stop doing updates, and do the wipe.
When I allow the phone to normally boot, it says in the top left in Blue Lettering "Booting Recovery", then it boots just to the Red Splash screen like I posted and then hangs. I have left it sitting there over night and it is still on the Splash Screen. When I tired to load a stock image file, with Odin3, it always fails, giving a Partition Error. There isn't an SD card in the phone, however, it does have a working SIM card installed.
Currently I'm trying to download a "stock" Verizon ROM off of Rapid Gator on to my PC, however, it's VERY slow since I'm using the free service.
Thanks,
Denis

OK, here's a weird thing, I just tried a power on, it loaded Recovery, then after about 5 min's it vibrated, and gave a message about the phone being locked and asked for my Samsung Account password. It seems to now be working.
What's the proper way to do a wipe before I give this phone to my daughter?
Thanks,
Denis
Do you remember your Samsung account credentials?
The latest "full wipe" stock ROM on a fast server, will keep it till tomorrow.
But don't flash, answer the question first.

1. Go to security settings and turn Reactivation Lock OFF.
2. Go to backup and restore settings and perform a factory reset.

Sorry, Yes, I was able to login to Samsung and get the phone going again, however, I didn't activate my Google Account with the phone, so as of now it's "clean". It's also currently doing a OTA upgrade of the OS. So it looks like you where correct in your fist post saying I didn't screw it up, rather I think I didn't let it completely boot.
Thank you so much for your help.

You're welcome.
To say the truth you're 1 of 10 who can recall the credentials
Don't forget to turn Reactivation Lock OFF, it's tied to your Samsung account.
As the final step I'd recommend to flash the latest stock "full wipe" ROM with Odin.
The first boot after factory reset usually takes 12-15 min (but never more than 20), so be patient.
