Just checked out S8 and LG G6 at the AT&T Store, tough choice - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

Went to AT&T store this morning to take a look at both phones. The S8 looks like a longer Note 7 without the home button. I have sort of mixed feelings about the S8 after about 8 mins playing with it. Sure it's the most powerful phone right now but I don't think it's the only thing that matters. Playing around the rom itself, it wasn't that much different than the S7 Edge. I think Samsung is dumbing down the phone too much, it's loosing more customizeability unless we root and run custom roms on it. The screen doesn't look much different than S7 Edge except longer and the on-screen has a haptic sensor under neath just like the iPhone 7. The camera looks and perform just like the S7 Edge which is bit disappointing the next gen device with same current gen camera. Overall it's thinner, the side round edges are very thin so why bother having curved screen when it's just tiny edges. Makes the side bar notifications less useful just merely small tiny edge buttons. I took a few photo shots, the AF sensor behaves just like the S7 Edge. No noticeable difference. I tried to customize the navigation buttons, there are locked down no way to customize the buttons like LG could do to some degree and OnePlus phones.
On to the G6, it's vastly different than the G5 which is a good thing. It looks and feels sort of like the Samsung Galaxy A7 but taller and thinner. The screen has warmer colors than the S8, standard SLCD display. The ROM feels pretty well organized, more vibrant theme than the dark cool S8 theme. I think overall this is a pretty good phone too if the price is right. It feels pretty good quality compare to the G5. I saw Pocketnow's review of the G6 and I agree, this phone's camera is a winner. Blows away the S8 camera in quality, features, and performance. That wide angle camera rocks. The AF locking speed is amazing and not a single blurry shot even with the default ISO and constantly moving around. I took similar shots with the S8 and got more blurry pics due to the slower AF lock..
Now the question will be whether the S8 package beats out the G6. Probably because Samsung often packs good hardware with so-so bloated software. Don't care much about docking to get DEX. Have plenty of powerful laptops at home here.
So before anyone preorder, go and try it out for yourself if you have the S7 Edge right now you might want to wait for the Note 8 or something else. I don't see any huge upgrade over it. LG G5 owners should definitely upgrade.

Any idea how the LGs are root-wise? I'm not holding out much hope for Samsung. I can't go back to a locked bootloader. I just can't.

I had the G5 on Sprint & the bootloader was locked down. Someone did manage to get root access using a modified aboot but it was only for an earlier Marshmallow firmware & you had to do so much workarounds just to have basic stuff working & imo it just wasn't worth it.

The sensor is NOT the same on S8/S8+ as S7/S7 Edge...

It's true the S8 & Plus do have different sensors & much like on the S7 & Edge they will either have the Sony Sensor or the icocell, but both are equally as good according to reports.

I have the LG V20, and had considered the G6 without actually seeing it, but then I saw the S8+ and knew it was for me. After that, I did make my way into Tmo store, and i saw the G6 and was quite unimpressed.
If i had to choose between the G6 and my existing V20, its the V20 all day.
between both of those and the S8+... well I pre-ordered the S8+

My experience with LG has been worse reception than almost every phone on the market for some reason. That is why I tend to not go with them. The last LG phone I had was the v10. I know my brother had the same experience.

I've also compared my S7E with S8+ today. In my opinion S8+ is a massive downgrade. The phone is much taller but bottom bezel+onscreen buttons together take more space than S7E bezel with buttons ca 2mm!!! The remaining part of the screen shows the same amount of data like S7E. Fingerprint scanner- I've got big hands but there is no way to use it without second hand- so if you are on the tube or similar and no free hand you can forget about using it. Aspect ratio 18.5:9 looks sooooo stupid!!!- Samsung took 'samsung' badge from the front- very well done but because of this aspect ratio ruined it massively. S7E black with chrome sides looks so cool compare to S8+ 'JETBLACK'- instead of stealing swipe left&right to go back and forward from apple they absorbed 'JET BLACK' crap colour-WTF. And the last thing- if you buy S8+ make sure you've got nail file so you can get rid of the stupid bixby button- what a crap!!! So like always nice phone every second release...

You can't go wrong with either one but one thing I noticed in the store is that the G6 didn't get very bright just like my V20. Samsung has been the king of screens for the past couple of years.

go and moan somewhere else pal, op was trying to compare g6 to s8... not s7e to s8 plus, if ur happy with ur s7... stop messing abt in s8 forums

The S8 has Canon duel pixel tech. It is not the same as the S7's camera, and LG G6 doesn't have nearly as many features. SD 821 vs 835....um... 835 please. Somewhat Decent VR.....Bixby thats has better features than Google assitant....
the S8 won this year, much like the s7 won me over the g5 last year. and I own both a g5 and s7....
Also...come in...LG's last 2 flagships had massive issues with boot failures. My LG G5 (and I'm a LG rep at my store) and it failed twiced.

I was at a verizon store earlier today, and she said that they've only sold 2 of the G6's so far. That seems pretty underwhelming to me. Then again, "most" people go there to get iPhones, but I just thought it would sell better than that. Thusly, why I'm posting here now lol.

I wish they would just go back to flat screens. I recently got a steal on a s7edge. It's a decent phone and the best battery life I have had on any phone. I do hate the curved screen. Thought I would get used to it, but nope. I heard it's less on the s8 hence me checking it out here soon, but I still have my N5 I use on wifi for home use and its to date my favorite phone. Unfortunately seems the note series is going mildly to the curved screen as well.
Maybe I'll check out the g6 while I am there. Or to heck with it, I might just get the blackberry Keyone! I do miss my physical keyboard, even after all these years.

Not sure about dumbing down the customization. Have you seen the theme store?

when I went to the T-Mobile store to pay off my V20, so I could pre-order the S8+, they had a G6 on display, and that was the first time I had seen it out. I asked the lady if it was selling, and she said she has not sold a single one.
it was nice but, if I had to choose between my V20 and the G6, I would keep the V20. Now i just can't wait for my S8+

The on-screen buttons can be removed by installing nova launcher, turning the dock off, and handling everything with gestures. The screen area is only limited if you leave the default touchwiz launcher. Gotta think outside the box sometimes.

I am worried about the curved screens too. The drop tests results on youtube arent too encouraging. But after the Note 7 went back and I am back to using my Note 4, I guess I will just have to put it in what I call a Brick case lol.

Buaaaaa I don't care about buttons on home screen, what about the buttons while mail is running or other apps? Is Nova working globally? What a ridiculous idea.

Don't buy the hype go try out the device out. The only thing I am seeing is this is an evolutionary step from the Note 7. They're trying to push it with a big PR to fix the note 7 debacle. Will they sell 70mil units? Hard to say since there are too many competition this year. Pixel 2, OnePlus, etc. I am gonna wait for Note 8 and hoping for none curve screen. It's a liability for me.

There seem to be mixed reports so far, I've spotted a couple of users on here who say they think it's slightly washed out - but it's hard to assign too much credibility to them as many are simply saying that because they're used to amoled and perhaps don't realise how inaccurate those colours really are.
There seem to be some online hands ons that suggest it's as good as the one on the lg g2 - I hope that's true. Since it's an IPS screen what I would really like would be for someone to do a comparison against an iPhone 5/5s, since Apple take calibration very seriously on both their phones and MacBooks.

Do you have a link where people refer to the screen saying is just as good as the LG G2's? :silly: , was a bit dissapointed with my nexus 4 screen, the washed out colors and nicht so good viewing angles mainly, although i muss say that it was leap and bounds better than my galaxy nexus screen ... :silly:
I agree , Apple KNOWS how to calibrate their screens, actually i calibrated my nexus 4 to look similar to my macbooks pro retina display...

Yes, the verge has an article called "Nexus 5 v LG G2: See the Difference":
http://www.theverge.com/2013/11/1/5054944/nexus-5-vs-lg-g2-in-pictures
A google search using the terms 'first impressions' or 'hands on' should find you a couple of others. The nexus 4 was, well, not calibrated at all and was very murky and washed out. So I'm certain it's at least superior to that. Personally I would wait (if you can) until anandtech's review as they always discuss and take seriously the calibrations of any phones they review.
Yep, Apple are the dogs b******* when it comes to calibration. I used to have a lumia 925 which nokia are smart enough to include with a white balance and saturation calibration tool. Using that in conjunction with my macbook screen and the same photo I was able to perfectly calibrate it. Got rid of the Nokia for other reasons but they should serve as a lesson to others manufacturers that it's really not that hard to include something simple like that so pro users can get the bang for their buck.
I said it looked slightly washed out to me but I was used to the LED screen. I'm getting more used to it now though, it looks really great but I still would like the colours to be a little bit more vibrant.

I don't know I mean those wallpapers are positioned differently so it's hard to conclusively tell. In any case it might be that the g2 is too saturated. For me the benchmark will be any iPhone from the 4s onwards, or perhaps the htc one.
Again, if anyone on here has an old 4s/5 in the house I'd be extremely grateful if you could give your impressions after you receive your n5. Just go to google and find a stock picture of something, put it on both phones and max brightness and compare the two......me love you long time!

Yeah the walpapers are positioned differently, but look at the intensity of the orange and red, it does look like the G2 has a more saturated screen, ive used the phone (G2) and the screen does look amazing , a little over saturated maybe but i find it perfect, i mean it's no galaxy s 4 ULTRAsaturated like...
Are people here mistaken a more true color representation as washed out compared to screens that are over saturated? I know it is hard to tell in a picture but the G2 colors look over saturated to me next to the N5.
It is like a TV calibration. You have people that like their colors to pop and have all the auto settings on which over saturates everything which looks freakin terrible but they love it. Then when you throw the TV in movie mode and turn off all those auto settings at first you might think everything looks washed out but then you realize how much true to life and real the picture looks and once you get used to that, throwing all those over saturating settings back on will just make you say yuck.

Yeah you'd be surprised/shocked how many people don't realise how ludicrous the colours on their AMOLED devices are. Problem is of course like a bee to a flower, we're hard coded to be attracted to these punchy colours.
On the Galaxy s4, even the display mode that's called 'STANDARD' is way WAY over-saturated. Most professional calibration websites that have looked at it say that 'MOVIE MODE' is the one that comes closest to correct (but again, is still slightly over saturated

I have a friend who keeps bragging about his galaxy s 3 camera, he says the people with iphone 5 ask him why does your photos look so amazing ? when they look at the photos on his screen and I was like ehhhh , its because your screen is over saturated ... transfer the photos to your phone and well talk
As much as i hate the glossy , horrid body of the Galaxy S 4, the physical -iphone ripoff- home button and the ui that was designed by blind people aka touchwiz , samsung does make good things too, aside from the best tech specs on the market, this option to choose the display mode is genuinely good, it should be on stock android too... they take on android beam is better implemented too, they have the best cameras on android (aside from the xperia z1) ... credit where it's due

Yeah it's good they put the option in, as I said before I would have preferred that samsung do what nokia now does and provide proper dual sliders for colour saturation and white balance - that way it can be set to as close to the perfect/rgb specification as possible. Kudos to samsung for the profiles though. If anyone still has an S4 'Movie mode' is definitely the most accurate.
I have an unfortunate yellow jumper that someone snapped me with using my S4 and in 'standard' mode I'm glowing like I just came back from a two week holiday in Chernobyl.

If you mean the top centre bezel area that's not the led light that's just the light in the room oddly illuminating the round earpiece.
The led light is located in the bottom bezel.
UPDATE: Oh right ok, didn't realise that earpiece is that colour with the white version! How bizarre...glad I ordered black.
Bought white version believing my front would be completely black. That white earpeace killed it. I enjoy watching videos with a fully black front so it feels like a TV.

[REVIEW] Sharp Aquos Crystal X (402SH)

There is very little talk of this device on Xda, other than some mentions here and there on the regular Crystal forums.
Also, I have not yet seen any english speaking people giving a review of it on Youtube (or anywhere else for that matter). So far it has just been hands-on at Sharp stands and such.
I therefore thought it might be of interest to some, that I share my experiences.
Now I know this smartphone is not gonna be widely adopted outside of Japan.
Not having cdma or the 800mhz(?) gsm band used in the U.S, it seems silly for anyone to import this back to the the states. Taking into account that you have to add on the cost of getting it sim unlocked, makes it pretty pricey for a high end device (with previous gen "flagship" hardware).

At the time of writing this, I have only had this device in my possession for two days.
Keep that in mind. I will therefore have problems with assessing battery life and similar things that need a bit more time to be accurately evaluated.
I guess the natural place to start would be:
Appearance
Biggest selling point is of course the edgeless 5.5 inch display.
I previously came from the the M8, before that, Z1.
I love htc's screens (Atleast since the HOX).
We all know the viewing angles of the Z1 (coming from the Z before that, I was stumped that they managed to fail twice on that front), but straight on it has the most natural looking colors of any smartphone I have ever had.
Let's say that the Z1 is at one end of the scale, M8 in the middle, and typical Samsung amoled screens at the other end. The Crystal X would imo fall between the Z1 and the M8, not so far off the htc. It looks the best of the three, and I'm sure that is just because there's more screen to look at
Under
Settings > wallpaper & display > Quality mode
you can choose color modes (Standard quality, Dynamic, Natural, Relax).
I have not had time to scrutinize the differences on a ton of photos and graphics just yet.
I have tried out Dynamic (which is default) and Natural a little. Relax looks absolutely crazy, and makes white and light colors get a sort beige tint.
@ 157 grams, the phone is right in my comfort zone.
Even though there is no metal body, it does not feel plasticky or anything like that.
The power button and the volume rocker are not wobbly, but stiff, and give off nice satisfying clicks.
Being edgeless makes it a bit thicker than the competition these days, but thanks to being rounded at the back, it doesn't feel fat at all (I have turned a little out of shape the last couple of years, maybe I'm projecting my insecurities:laugh
I am going to even out the pattern on the back piece and spray paint it.
Tactile wise I don't feel it being bad or good, but I am doing it for two reasons:
-I like a sleek finish more then patterns
-the camera actually protrudes just a tiny tiny bit. This will hopefully neutralize that "threat", and avoid it being a resting point for the phone.
Innards
I could toss up the numbers here, but that is one google away, so just do that.
Key things to note here would be non-removable battery, and micro sd slot.
The "direct wave receiver... thingy (hell let's just call it a tiny buttkicker) works very well.
I was a tad worried when I read the instructions.
It says something along the lines of "make sure your entire ear covers the glass, to block out surrounding noise and to achieve the best audio experience"
The reality is, you don't even have to be near the screen. I have to actually turn the volume down quite a bit so it don't act as a speakerphone. Not to say it's so loud it's bothersome, or that people will unintentionally eavesdrop 10 feet away though.
If you are out and about in the city, the background noise would even that out easily.
My point is here that my skepticism was merely unfounded.
On to the:
Interaction
I have been running lollipop on my M8 and Nexus 9 for a while now, and liking it I might add. So naturally I would like it to land on the Crystal X as well.
Root is however more important to me right now (this phone badly deserves it)
So we are left with 4.4.4.
It is pretty close to stock. The notification panel looks a bit different.
Weirdly enough, you can't get to the brightness slider unless you go into settings. The brightness tile in the dropdown only gives you four choices (min, med, max and auto).
Rom is snappy, but certain apps introduces micro lags when scrolling.
There are other small features, like swiping from one side to the other on the status bar to take a screenshot or open image viewer.
Many (me included) hate those times when you are looking at media in portrait, and things are askew. So you tilt it just enough to see aaand blammo! auto rotation kicks in.
Grip sensors avoid this from happening.
It's been a while since I've been dependent on the power button for turning the screen on/off (and never going back). The grip sensors are therefore something I think everyone would greet with open arms (or with a firm grip I should say).
Just pick it up, and you're off to the races.
The speaker on the back is fairly loud. Nothing extreme, but well within my expectations.
Camera is something I have yet to fully explore. Looks a little sony-ish (not bad).
Not the fastest shooter, but seems like it takes good pics. I will pit it against my other relevant devices tomorrow.
Will be interesting to see how it fares against the M8 in low light.
In pitch black where you really rely on your flash, I think the Aquos might struggle more, because quite frankly, the flash on this thing is lackluster. Which means it's not a great flashlight either.
The final act:
Conclusion
When you add all that up in a blender, I will gulp it down and ask for seconds.
There is the question of: Will this device ever receive root?
Looking at the Crystal forums, it doesn't reassure me all that much.
One can just hope. I might also consider anteing up a phone and/or cash as a root bounty at some point.
All in all, no big letdowns. My worries were quickly put to rest.
If I had the chance to go back, I would buy it one more time
I hope there are already other owners (or future ones) out there, who stumbles over this thread and can chime in. Maybe we can group together and create a wave.
I will try to take som better photo's of the phone outside in the daytime a little later tomorrow. Also as mentioned, a camera shootout.
So what have we learned today kids?
Don't put Sharp-ie in pooper!
I absolutely love mine as well. I have owned it for 3 days and have been very impressed. My only complaint is that I only get edge and would love to be able to get at least 3g connection. I think it really is one of the nicest phones I have owned and I have owned a lot. I wish we could add radio bands to make the 3g possible. I find the little differences in the software to be nothing more than a little annoying. I actually shut off the swipe to activate feature as I found it always activating when I slipped it into the sleeve.

EDGE is brutal. I feel for you there.
Hopefully within a short time frame I will be able to test it on LTE-A (4G+), since around these parts they are rolling it out right now to several of the biggest cities here (I live fairly close to the capital).
I was quite busy yesterday, so I have not yet had time to take more photos. Hopefully I will have time a little later today though.

I don't think you can. Only seen a setting for changing the spacing.
I just force immersive mode to get rid of it.
I am happy to say that Lmt luncher is working great (V2.4)
This edgeless beauty can't be constrained by ugly black buttons
I use Go Launcher and that way it becomes transparent by default. I can also swipe up and it disappears completely. I can do the same for the notification bar as well.
correction, the 4 icons don't dissappear just the dock icons can.

Find something unusual during charging... I have this orico 4 (2ax2, 1ax2) ports charger that can output 1.1a to 2.0a to my other phones but for this 402sh only max 0.5a. Tried all kind of cables. Then using xiaomi 10400mah power bank can output 1A..

Mine has gone through three different chargers, and they charge much more than 500mah (Logitech 1A, HTC 1.5A, HTC 2A)
Have not even had time to roll back the Z1 and the M8 to stock yet.
Thinking of comparing the three in a couple of scenes in full resolution, 8Mpx, both with their respective cameras and the google camera.
Meanwhile, two quick "glam" shots:
Does anyone know the technical details of the phone?
Like aperture, and if it has ois?
@benziii , does it have the slow-motion (240fps) which is highlighted on the new zeta models ?
Thanks for reviewing this, any chance of a source link?
edit: I found the link; if anyone else want look, here: http://www.softbank.jp/corp/group/sbm/news/press/2014/20141212_01/
Battery life
Guys what is the battery life on the 402sh like? Also this is not hugely important but what is the colour of bezel on the black 402sh? Is it really black? Reason I am asking is Id like to get this in black but when I look at the pictures of the black version, the front still looks whitish to grayish rather than pure black. Can someone please confirm?
Awesome!
I really hoped this phone will get. root, but it seems we have failed to create a wave.
I have seen some websites that demand payments for rooting your device.
I'd like to know if they are reliable at all.

Doo you recommend this phone?

Thinking of buying this phone since its cheaper now and has all up to date features from samsung
Do you recommend it? Also how do you protect your screen? And Have you ever dropped it?
I am looking forward to the answer as well for myself. I've been using note 1 up until now and this is just a plan either note 4 or note edge and would love to her suggestions
I really like the note edge because its unique but at same time
It does not have known screen protectors nor i have seen any one recommend a case for it and i could not find any drop tests for it..
As for note 4 it lacks edge features of note edge but at same time you can guarntee that it will never have of scratch or crack thanks for the so many screen protectors available for it.
Could some one pls give me their opinions for the edge and if screen protector will protect it?
m coming off of the Note II and moving on to the Edge... the phone seems super powerful but i havent tested it yet... I have an unlocked AT&T and Im actually coming on here to rom it with something that does not give me 4 gigs of garbage apps that I cant use or uninstall!...
Screen wise, I barely ever got a scratch on the screen of my note 2... so Im thinking this screen will be just as reliable... but I do want to get a decent case for it... the one i have is used so it looks like the previous user didnt use a case and it has a bunch of dings on the edge that doesnt have a screen... its not too noticeable but it does show that the phone tends to fall on that side the most.
I can honestly say that the internet on this phone is kinda crappy... Im not sure if its the Rom or maybe a faulty antena.. after I flash it with a bare bone Rom I'll test it out and let you guys know... if its the antena i will be very upset.
Haha, I've actually been waiting for someone to ask these questions and I will tell you my experience...... The story starts with a Note 4. I bought one a while back because it was basically the best phone to date. I "liked" the Note 4, but I have AT&T and after having it for a while, I found myself online daily to see if anyone had rooted it yet so I could clean it up (a lot). That day never came. So I typed "Note 4 vs" in Google to see what people were comparing it to. I'll keep the story short, but some of you may appreciate the extra details. Sooo.... went for the Nexus 6, basically everything the Note was, minus everything the Note was, lol. Fell in love with the Nexus. Loved the assortment of roms and freedom to roam. But the camera sucks. It was/is one of my favorite phones, and I've owned them all. Well, I sold my Nexus because prices are dropping like a rock on them. Which brings us to...
Note edge.
Bottom line, I love the phone. I've used an S6 edge (which has faster hardware) but the actual functionality of the edge on the Note blow the S6 edge out of the water. I bought the T-Mobile edge because if I decided to keep it, I wanted to root it. Well, I used it for a couple days and I was sold. Even before rooting, I already loved it. Sold the Nexus 6 (still an awesome phone). Bottom line in my opinion, for phones in this class, the Note edge is awesome. I know there are 50 other opinions out there, but I wanted to not only share my opinion, but the story behind it. Not to mention expandable storage and removable battery.
Screen protectors: I've only used one, and surprisingly I am pretty happy with it. Considering I think the only ones they can make for an edge are TPU, I thought there was no hope because of the texture of TPU. I thought the pen would suffer the most. I bought the Skinomi off of Amazon, I swear I spent an hour reading and trying to decide. It's a wet apply, which I don't mind at all, and it was better than I anticipated. Smoother than I was expecting, and pen was smooth on it, too. I took it off because I had one little bubble and re-applied it, well it doesn't really work the second time. So they are sending me a new one free. So it has been about 4 or 5 days with no screen protector and I'm honestly thinking about not putting the new one on. Nothing beats the smooth feel of the glass...... But, as we all know, it only takes that one single time to have that scratch stare back at you forever. Choose wisely.
So there's my story.
Oh, I would also suggest finding one with 4.4.4 and not 5. Take my word for it, or do some research. I'm staying on 4.4.4 and am happy as can be.

Yeah. Reason i prefer note edge to all 2015 phones. That it combines the s pen with edge and finger print features and 2k display. Which means lots of features compared to the featurless s6. Not to mention sd card slot and removable battery could be a plus.
I see it as a future proof phone.
However i would never leave it without screen protector and i advice you not to..
I removed both the case and screen protector of My note 3 and one day fell on the air port and had a big scratch in the middle.
No matter how much it distorts screen quality its always worth it at least until you get better protector.

Well, my story is that I fell in love with the leather note series. I started with the note 2, which was ergonomically a better phone in any way(rounded edges). Note 3 was awesome, then the note 4 which I like; but the rom support isn't that great in my opinion.
Now the edge has a lower amount of xda nerds, but yet better roms(I can't go without Multi DPI roms anymore).
The Edge just adds extra features the Note 4 doesn't have, nothing more really. For the casing; I like the genuine samsung flip covers, so I bought one for my edge aswell. I don't have it yet, but I guess it will be as awesome as all other note flip cases ;D

I have the HANTON Samsung Galaxy Note Edge Card Pocket Case Front Full Cover Flip Classic from ebay and it covers the whole screen including the edge.
I love my Note Edge. At first, I was gonna get the Note 4 but I knew that I would've regretted it later because of the uniqueness of the Edge. I had played with the iPhone 6 Plus and the S6 Edge but, I don't really like iPhones and the edge of the S6 seemed like a gimmick to me. Since I had read that the Note Edge was pretty much a Note 4 with a second, independent screen, I went for it despite of the high price. I also bought the
ArmorSuit MilitaryShield - Samsung Galaxy Note Edge Screen Protector and the Verus Thor case.
I couldn't be happier with my purchase. The phone has all the features of the Note 4 plus all the features of an actual, super-useful, functional edge screen. I flashed a new ROM as soon as I got it, I keep installing apps, and the phone is as good as new. It also looks amazing and it doesn't have a scratch on it. If you like features, you'll love the Edge Note.
In my opinion the Note Edge is the best piece of Android hardware on the market today....with one of the worst software implementations. Especially the ATT version is a bloated lag ridden touchwiz mess that, due to the locked bootloader, cannot be fixed. The stock 4.4 version is just "ok" while the 5.0.1 "upgrade" is almost unusable by normal android standards. There are some great ROMS already out for this great piece of hardware, but if your unwilling/unable to flash one or uncomfortable with Xposed, I would steer towards something else that doesnt use Touchwiz.
I love mine.
It's got to be the nicest phone I've ever laid hands on.
Buy it.
Root it.
Get rid of all the garbage.
It seems like everyone and their brother has a factory installed app' on this thing.
BTW,stick with KitKat.
Apparently the new ROM has a myriad of headaches with it.
It kind of reminds of Windows.
The more they "refine" it,the more bloated it gets.
My RAM usage is around 600 MB with anti virus and a couple more apps' on board.
It works very nicely.
yes, 1000%. just do not get the lollipop upgrade if you can avoid it.

calls can't be answered from the edge anymore, text messages flash across the top of the screen, not the edge like it should, there is no music player on the lock screen anymore and the battery life sucks on 5.0.1. There's more, but these are the easiest to identify. If you are fine with that or have not experienced these crippling setbacks of 5.0.1. then good for you. As for me, reverting back, gave me all the features that made this my top phone of the past 10 years.

Coming from G3, almost didn't go to to LG because of it. This thing is a whole different world of awesome. Things that overheated and throttled my G3 don't even warm this thing up, and best part, no data issues going from WiFi to mobile!!! Love the second screen too. Now when I'm navigating and streaming Bluetooth at the same time, I can change tracks without leaving nav app, notifications don't interrupt games/videos...Extremely happy so far!

Need to point out that realistically it is only a 5 inch screen.
With controls and second screen. You effectively have only a 5 inch screen with a whole lot of bulk. Granted the internals are great. Although it is not in any way a 5.7 inch screen. Great phone, but let down on such a massive phone with effectively no more screen area than a S4.
Not to mention. NO blinking notification and no temperature or humidity sensors. Infered is marginal at best.

Umm, no, it's not a 5" screen. The main screen is 5.7" minus how much space the buttons at the bottom take up, which is like any other phone not made my Samsung.
The second screen is a completely independent 2.1" screen. Please don't spread misinformation.
And they didn't put a led light because that is what the second screen is partly for. And if you want all those sensors, get a Samsung.
Sounds like you need to do more research before you buy a $600+ smartphone only to be disappointed for you own lack of research.

Actually, if you go get yourself a tape measure, the 5.7 doesn't include the second screen... And if you're really tech savvy, you can hide the navigation bar when you aren't using it... So on both of those counts, you are wrong... Also, all your notifications appear on the second screen, which to me is more convenient than a blinking light, since I don't even need to open my phone to check my notifications. And also, the infrared controls my stuff from anywhere in the living room, which works fine for me... Considering Samsung no longer has this option, it's a plus. Other than that, sorry to ruin your phone bash, have a super day.

This phone made me love it. My G3 started getting the BSOD and honestly I'd planned switch to a Samsung S7 Edge in March, or whenever it is released. Went to the store to try to get a used G4 just to hold me off until then but they didn't have any. Walked out with the V10. Unlocked bootloader, flashed TWRP and SU and have been loving it ever since. I'm not really sure why because aside from the standard faster processor, gig more memory and slightly larger screen, it wasn't that much different from my G3 but I've really grown to like this thing. Second screen is the phone's first bullet point but it's kind of gimmicky and I don't really have a use for it, but besides that stuff just seems to work better on the V10. It doesn't have Bluetooth connection issues like my G3 did, phone doesn't heat a small room under heavy use, and I'm not clearing apps to free up 200mb more memory all day. Call quality is great, quick charge is awesome, and the 5.7" screen is really, really, really nice. A louder and clearer speaker is the only thing the G3 did better but the V10's will do. So I've warmed up to my step child and really not thinking about the S6/S7 at the moment.

I agree with you. I come from the nexus 6 and so far I love this phone but the lack of custom Rom and development is kind of ?.
Bought mine during launch week, and was disappointed it had major issues: second-screen bleed was bad, and the speaker sounded really distorted. Then a month later the wireless charging chip died.
T-Mobile replaced it with a brand new unit manufactured in late December and it is absolutely perfect. No bleed at all, speaker is crystal-clear. Loving it, especially the camera!
Started out with Lg G2 d800,loved that phone sold it and got lg g3 D850 awesome phone.. Finally decided to get the v10,its very smooth, fast, beautiful display, whenever i take pictures my friends are stunted by how beautiful and rich the photos come out. Manual controls on camera and video, dual front face camera, removable battery , sdcard support, slick and premium design over kill. This is by far the best device i have ever owned since day one 'htc touch pro2' ... Im really impressed with this phone...
I upgraded from a Nexus 6. My first experience with LG (Android wise) was with the G2 and the Flex. So going to the V10 was easy. My only caveat is the fact that I moved back to 5.1.1 when I've been on 6.0.1 for a bit. Can't wait for some decent roms to truly use this phones full potential.
I almost gave up on androind OS after two generations of Samsung Galaxy devices, Note 3 and until today Note 4. The update from Kitkat ruined the Note 4 experience completely for me, if anything left me frustrated. Ive reached an age whereby I just want something to do as it says on the box, typing on the Note 4 became a nightmare for me, tiny space bar mistyping all the time. Wifes Iphone 6plus was appealing but thought Id try another brand of Droid. Earlier today walked out of the T Mobile store with a new V10.

After 3 days with the S7 Edge Silver (T-Mobile)

I'm coming from the Note 4. I kept it for the last few years as I loved the battery swapping ability (carried two almost credit card thin batteries in my pocket whenever I went out) and the memory slot. But it was getting long in the tooth.. The batteries were getting worn out and I was jealous of all the faster CPUs out in the market.
So when the S7 Edge came out, I jumped on it because the screen was almost the same size at the Note 4, I could use my memory card again, a better camera, a faster CPU. and the shiny shiny silver body.
While my Note 4 was rooted and running a ROM, I decided I wasn't going to do this with the S7. I wanted to be able to use Samsung Pay, and most of the things I had rooted for, seemed to be fixed by Android Marshmallow.
I could write a huge list of all the things I love about the phone. But you guys aren't here for that. Let's talk about the things that I am having issues with.
1.) Screen sensitivity on the edges. When I first got the phone, I was having problems using Samsung Keyboard and Google's Keyboard. The keyboard keys that were on the outside edge kept not clicking. After a bit, I realized that it was because my pinky was touching the other side of the phone. I had to be more careful on how I held the phone. But then I got a case for the phone and this issue was taken care of, as now my pinky gripped the plastic.
2.) Phone call image. This may seem silly, but i like to see a much bigger picture of the person that is calling me. Why did Samsung now make the picture sooo small now? On the left is my old Note 4. On the right is the S7:

3.) The camera settings. Why does the camera keep resetting after a while back to automatic? I want it to keep in Pro mode, so I can shoot RAW everytime. I was taking photos of the sunset today, and after it was done, only then realized it was not in Pro mode anymore so I didnt have the RAW images to play with.
4.) The camera settings 2. Why is the 12 megapixel only work at 4:3, but if you want to shoot at 16:9, you only get 9.1 megapixel? Who shoots 4:3 ever? All the photos I have taken, no longer fill my 1080p screens of my computer or TV. Hell, they don't even fill the screens of the phone itself. What is the point of shooting 4:3? Now I need to step back when taking photos, so I can crop them into 3:2 later.
5.) Games/movies not filling screen. So one thing I loved about the Note 4, was that almost all movies and games fill the screen 100%. Now, it seems like a lot of stuff is not filling the screen all the way. One example is Need for Speed: No Limit. The game almost seems cropped when playing.
6.) Slippery. This thing has no grip. I'm afraid constantly it will slide out of my hands. I got a case and now it's perfect. I have a good grip and have less finger prints everywhere.
7.) Battery life. So, as a lot of people have been discussing lately, their seems to be an issue with the Snapdragon 820 processor causing the Android System to eat up 30% of the battery. This does not happen on Samsung's own Exynos chip. So while my battery lasted 12 hours today and is only at 30%, I still wish it was more. Especially seeing that I can't replace it.. and in a few months, it won't be as good. I know a lot of you are saying that the phone needs a couple days to burn in, but it's been 4 days. And I'm worried about battery life bigtime.
Speaking about batteries, I really wish there was a smaller battery that could charge the phone just once at Quickcharge 2.0 speeds. The smallest I could find is the AUKEY Portable 6000mAh, but the thing is huge.. I may return this. I'd be happy with a 3500mAh one that is half the size so it can fit in my jeans pocket, like I carried my spare Note 4 batteries. But they don't make that.
The case I got was the "Galaxy S7 Edge Case, Spigen® [Liquid Crystal] Ultra-Thin [Crystal Clear] Premium Semi-transparent / Exact Fit / NO Bulkiness Soft Case for Samsung Galaxy S7" (seriously... that's the long ass name that is on Amazon). It is very thin, but provides an amazing grip, kills the finger print problem, and I think can save this phone from 3-4 feet falls. The only thing I don't like is the raised lip it has on the bottom. It extends too far out from the bottom of the phone. Either I will take a razor blade to it, or look for another case, as I can see it get very annoying for me.
Ok.. That's it. Hope this helps some people. If you have any ways to fix the stuff I am having issues with above, please let me know. I'll leave you with the pic I took of today's sunset. Unedited, unfiltered, in unglorious 4:3 ratio.
With a 16:9 picture you lose quality toward the edges so the 4:3 retians the same quality and is already cropped. Think of the difference similar to a full frame DSLR and a crop sensor (APS-C) that cannon uses on their Rebel line. I personally enjoy the 4:3 ratio for pictures, but everyone is different. When you change to 16:9 all its doing is crop the 4:3 picture to thst ratio. Also the dialer picture screenshots are not consistent. The Note 4 is showing a contact and the S7E is dialing someone (in call UI) so please fix that so the comparison will be accurate.

Yes, I figured out that reason why it lost megapixel when going to 16:9, is because it was cropping the image. I shoot full frame with my Sony a7RII. I've never shot with a crop sensor. LOL. It's just annoying that I can't fill the screen with my shots.
As for the call screen from my Note, I would have to reactive my old SIM to get my Note 4 active, which would be a pain in the butt. So I just Googled an example:

That works, it was just hard to compare two different things. I haven't owned a Samsung phone since my Note 3 which was a long time ago. I'm sure you end up cropping those photos a lot, but full frame sensors give you more 'picture' to choose from. Samsung probably use the 4:3 ratio based on what Sony offered for the sensor features they wanted. I haven't taken enough photos in Pro mode to notice whether or not it defaults back to auto a while, but I'll look out for that. I took a bunch of pictures with the S7E and compared then to my 6P for fun. The S7E does better in certain situations it just depends on what you're doing with it. I still have mixed feelings about the phone especially the battery life (dismal right now).

I know everyone is excited about the new phone but can we try to not have 100's of threads all the same
Thanks

Hello and thanks for your impressions
maybe with the next FW update, samsung will solve camera settings :-/ a bad bug for this cool device.
Can you explain better about first point? 1.) Screen sensitivity on the edge
without case is not handy write with keyboard? I never had a border smartphone and I'd like be sure to buy this.
The time spent with note4 about writing with keyboard (like email, etc) can be the same using this device or the border are a problem?
thanks!

I've noticed the same issue even with a case. Sometimes whole I'm typing with 1 hand the keyboard will think I'm hitting letters that I'm not. It then starts to massively lag in my case forcing me to reboot the phone because nothing will make it stop once it's started even when typing with the phone flat on a table. It's a software bug that should be easily fixed.

exactly: (excluding this bug) is it handy and smart writing with this device like a flat mobile?
thanks

What do you mean? I rarely if ever put my phone flat on a table to Type anything unless I'm using side sync via my laptop.

Is harder to type on compared to a flat screen, and has a strong learning curve (no pun intended)

I believe since your note 4 is rooted, you have done some editing. If I'm not mistaken, you are using the full screen caller mod. Unless they changed it from the note 3 and s5, which uses a small picture, to a full size picture on the note 4, I'm sure it's a mod you've installed.

The speaker is maybe 2x the volume of the Note 4. It's VERY loud.

No.. I am impressed. The stuff I listed is just the annoying things that I would love fixed. The camera seems to take great pics. Fast to load up. Fast to take the pic. RAW option is awesome. Autofocus is fast. Front facing "wide" camera option is awesome. It's just annoying that it shoots in 4:3. All monitors, laptops, TVs (of the last decade), tablets, phones, etc are all wide (like 16:9). Nothing is 4:3 anymore. So now every picture I take, doesn't fill the screen.

If your fingers not to grip the edge of the screen, then you should have no issue. I was getting better at it, but then my case arrived and I stopped having to do it that way.

Not exactly a "bug". More like a new way to use the phone. But yes, after training, you will have no issue typing one handed. But I would advise getting a case anyways, as the phone is slippery as hell.

Yes, I was using the TEKXodus ROM on my Note 4 phone which def had that. But I saw images online of the S6 have this come as standard. I really don't want to root this phone, so I am hoping there is some kind of solution.
That's cool mate cheers I was more than happy with the note so I should be over the moon with the s7 edge. So overall are u happy you switched?

90%. I just need to make sure the lack of swappable battery is not an issue. I actually have a charging station at my apartment for all my friends who came here with iphones and android phones who desperately need to charge their phones in the middle of the day. I never had this issue. I have literally never gone anywhere and asked if I can use a place to charge up. Bringing a few extra Note 4 batteries with me was always the solution. That's why it's a shame that there is no small jean pocket size solution for the S7, that can charge the phone fully within an hour.

The 6000mah Aukey battery is small and likely your best bet. You have to remember that a 3-4k battery won't fully charge your phone. Some of that capacity is lost due to heat and inefficiencies while charging. I carry the Aukey 6000mAh battery in my backpack and its light/small enough that I forget it's there. A smaller battery would be nice but it would need to be at least 4-5K if you want any possibility of a 0-100% charge. I had a RavPower 20100mah battery that only charger at ~60-70% efficiency which is pretty good for an external battery.

As a backpack battery, the Aukey 6000 is great.. But I barely carry a bag when i go out. And now that summer is coming up, I wont have a large jacket to carry the bag. So I need something I can carry in my jeans front pocket that has Quickcharge 2.0 so I don't have to keep it cabled for more than an hour.
