So, last week I received the update to 4.4.4 on my Republic Wireless xt1031 (locked bootloader), then quickly realized that I preferred 4.4.2. After this, I downloaded the official republic wireless 4.4.2 firmware and attempted to flash it with fastboot, which didnt do anything but wipe my data. I then retried with mfastboot, which softbricked my phone. Whenever I try to flash any of the many stock firmwares I have found (tried Republic Wireless, Boost and a couple other firmwares, including a couple 4.4.4 firmwares), it seems that everything has been able to flash over and is working other than the system image files (system.img_sparsechunk1, system.img_sparsechunk2, system.img_sparsechunk3 for the stock republic wireless firmwares). Whenever I try to flash any of the 3 over, I get an error on the phone:
hab check failed for system
Invalid PIV signed system image
and in my command prompt:
...\falcon_repw_user_4.4.2_KXB20.9-1.10-2.27_33_release-key

I've heard this can be an issue with a locked bootloader, but I've also read that people can flash stock roms with a locked bootloader as long as the firmware is specifically for your phone. Does anyone have any advice on this issue? I'm just about at my wit's end here. I have tried at least 6 different firmware, I've intentionally hardbricked it by destroying the bootloader, then reflashed it with blankflash and Motoflasher on two separate tries and still no luck. Currently, it goes through the boot process but just boots to a black screen. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I had a nightmare with this problem, I think it is an issue with your partitions, do you have an unlocked boot loader? If so try installing twrp recovery and check the sizes of your partitions especially /system partition and post results, I never fixed the issue I eventually got it replaced by the store I bought the phone from.
PS unlocking boot loader will void your warranty so if possible try and get the store to replace device.

My bootloader is not unlocked and Republic Wireless does not allow the bootloader to be unlocked. One of the reasons I was trying to downgrade was because I was going to use sunshine to unlock the bootloader, but it doesn't work on 4.4.4. I got the gpt.bin from the official update for 4.4.4 on Republic Wireless that someone had posted here on xda, as it was the noly one that would flash successfully that I have found. According to the 4.4.4 debricking guide on here, you can flash the gpt.bin and motoboot.img from a 4.4.4 firmware, then after that flash the 4.4.2 files from the stock firmware of your choice.
Ahhh I see that's The same problem I had I followed most online suggestions from XDA and others and nothing worked for me so I got a replacement phone, is that possible for you to do, fingers crossed that if you do it will come with 4.4.2

Did you get it unlocked?
wulfep, I am exactly in your situation. Were you able to find a workaround that allows you to flash the Republic Wireless Moto G 1stgen XT1031 phone with an alternate firmware, of the same Android Lollipop version but for other Spring-based MVNOs (i.e. Boost, US Cellular, Verizon etc)? And considering that the phone has the damn Motorola bootloader locked !?
Thanks.
Nougat is working on almost all plus variatns.... in the telegram group is already confirmed working on XT1640-41-42-43-44... only for moto g4 plus.... on standard moto g4 you will get no ril nor wifi
1- Install full xt1643 lastest stock rom XT1643 Stock MM rom. You have a guide to flash here Flashing steps (oem lock command is not mandatory).
2-Reboot to system, copy this (ota nougat file) into the internal storage.
3- Turn off and start into bootloader. There choose recovery mode and hit power. If you get "no command" press power for 2 seconds and then push vol +. Select install ota from sdcard and choose the file that you downloaded. let the recovery do its job.
4. (OPTIONAL BUT RECOMMENDED) wipe data/cache.
5. reboot system. hope you can do it.
I am sure that this firmware will flash the wrong modem for the US version (XT1644).

The LTE bands of Indian variant (XT1643) are different. Do you have LTE there in Chile with this firmware? What provider? Note that the 2G/3G bands are the same.
Since the modem is re-flashed too, I don't get how the LTE bands would not be affected.

I do have LTE on band 4 now... If you see in the list attached, band 4(1700/2100) is not available in India.
So your model is actually a XT1644 (the only one that has LTE band 4)?
Well it shouldn't mess with your bands as your bands are hardwared into the processor. BUT as this is a soak test build I wouldn't except everything to work

Nope. The bands are a combination of non-volatile (NV) settings inside the Qualcomm modem and hardware bits. Good news is that it seems that Moto update didn't touch the NV, so even with the "wrong" firmware, the NV part of the modem that determines the bands remained the same. Don't know if any other issues might arise (like VoLTE functionality).
Info about the NV area:

I can assure it's working on XT1641, bought in Personal, carrier of Argentina. It took 12 minutes to install the zip and 40 seconds for the first boot!

Just a reminder. It is highly recommended when you go to make a change in your device to the first do NANDROID your current system. So you make sure that if something goes wrong you can restore a copy of your operating system. Someone asked the question of how to return to MM. I just restore my MM backup with TWRP and ready, all right.
I can confirm.. working great on XT1644! No issues seen so far.

Two questions about this. First off, I am using a XT1641 version p2a from Canada running build MPJ34.139-23.3.
1) Your post says it works for 41-42-43-44 but your update link is specifically for XT1643. Is that correct? Should all these phones be updated to that firmware first or do you mean to say that you should just be on the latest build for your phone? My build is older than that but says there's no update.
2) I had to flash stock MM firmware before and needed to flash a specific carrier or else WiFi and network wouldn't work. With Nougat is there just one that will work for everything or do I need to wait for my specific carrier to have firmware released?
Thanks
*Edit*
Finally got around to the update, everything works perfect on my phone. Only odd thing is that my version in Hardware Information changed - went from p2a to PVTB. Not sure what that means (if anything at all), but either way it doesn't seem to affect anything.

1. Yeah, it's alright. I flashed it on my XT1641 and no problems, Baseband conserved. As you say, our variant was the only one without getting ANY security update. But flashing this one let you update to Nougat.
2. Truly, idk. I have only seen retail variants. But it didn't modified any network related thing on the cases that I know. So, make a backup and try

is it safe, nothing to do with root/bootloader?
EDIT: DO NOT flash this on official Lineage with Lollipop bootloader, you will end up bootlooping on start, unable to get even into recovery after restart, only possible to get into fastboot which is also pretty useless, since your bootloader is locked
any idea how to recover back without going through flashing all the ROM and everything? is it possible to flash just firmware through fastboot?

The above mentioned error arises with my moto g3 whenever i try to flash stock rom.
Currently i am running AospExtended-v5.0-ALPHA, android version 8.0.0, and my bootloader is unlocked.
I have searched a lot over the internet to find a fix which i didn't found, and observed that many other users faced this, but all are asking for fix. It will be great if someone help me out with this!
It's been repeatedly asked (and answered) in at least the firmware index, flashing guide and also in q/a section that preflash validation occurs when the target firmware is older than the one installed in the device.
The firmware images that are either equal or newer should flash fine without errors.
The workaround is to skip flashing gpt.bin and bootloader.img. The rest partitions should flash correctly.

It's normal to get an error flashing the gpt.bin, regardless of the firmware version. If you see it, just ignore it and continue flashing with the next command listed in your flash file. It will work.
