Strava always crash after approx. 12 km of bike activity monitoring - Huawei Mate 9 Questions & Answers

Can anyone confirm this? Or, even better, anyone have solution for this problem?
I disabled every battery optimisation I found, including the following:
- Settings > Apps > Settings > Special access > Ignore optimisations
- "locked" Strava in recent apps menu
I read a lot about this with different Huawei phones, somehow I hopped the problem is fixed on Mate 9...

You might want to approach the developer. Most people never bother. Drop them a quick email.

I did that now, thanks for an idea

You can only try the developer, but they may need help from Huawei to find out where the problem is in the phone.
And Huawei will never help. They have an answer to all questions about app problems - "We do not support any apps."

yeah, same problem with me..had an ascend p7..and now a mate 7..crashes after the first phone unlock...couldn't find any fix for a couple of years or so...

Huawei mate 9 Strava recording issues.
After optimising the battery I changed the Strava settings so the screen stays on whilst riding. This appears to have worked at least for my last 2 rides

Anyone having buyers remorse?

Well, one week till CES where Huawei will announce the US version. Getting excited! But I was wondering. Anyone have buyers remorse at this point? Do you like the Mate 8 more or less as time goes on?
No buyer's remorse here.. I'm quite sure if a N/A version is released there will an accompanying rom as well..

Thanks. I'm trying to decide whether to get the Mate 8 (Great specs and build), Blu Pure XL (very good specs, cheap, its been rooted and has TWRP - also some promise for developer support) or stay pat with my Note Edge (I do like the edge features and it's screen is basically as wide as the Mate 8, just not as tall. also Marshmallow arrives in the next few months hopefully). Decisions decisions....

Yeah, it all comes down to how much do you want to spend.. I bought the 128GB version, I had the Mate 7 so I knew what to expect..
If I could only get notifications working properly then I would be 100% happy.

Been there done that, been through every option and nothing helps. Reading around, this seems to be a common bug with emui, and the only way around this is to disable phone manager or make the apps system apps. Which can't be done without root. So, right now I am playing a waiting game.

altaz,
Similar problems have been noted in some of the other threads. Is it possible that the problem you are experiencing isn't due to actual notification issues, but that the apps you are expecting notifications from are not currently being permitted to run in the background when the phone's screen is turned off?
I'm not sure which apps you are having trouble with, but for example, with Whatsapp(?). If this sounds like it might be the issue for you (and you haven't already looked into this), try going into Settings-->Advanced settings-->Battery manager-->Protected apps and allow those apps that should be receiving notifications.
As to the original question of the thread, no remorse. So far so good. A pretty sleek, powerful phone. Just need to get it rooted.
Might be the interactions between marshmelow & emui, if that is the case a fix should only be imenent.
Nevertheless, try this ---> battery manager itself; click on the setting icon up left of the screen, you need to switch on (Keep mobile data on when sleeping).
Of course that is in congunction with the rest of the settings/permissions.
Good luck,
No buyers remorse here. Having recently had a P8Max I knew what to expect with regards to setting up notifications and permissions so they work, and for me currently no particular problems. The camera is not as good as the best of 2015, or even 2014, but I had realistic expectations there and the camera is performing well enough for me in light of the other benefits.

Seems this notification problem is becoming more annoying, i have turned on everything possible (permissions, auto start, notifications, ignore optimizations). I even found another layer of settings in the apps settings that allow a deeper level of changes (settings > Apps > Advanced) . And still i can't get emails to notify when the phone is in standby. This is even after i have left the email application on, and turned the turned the phone off via the power button. i've spent a number of hours sending myself emails in various conditions and while might get the notifications sometimes, others i may not so this doesn't help narrow down the cause.
I have now realized that it's not just emails that are affected, i don't get auto notifications in Google Photos or Rewards, and some apps which run on schedule. The google apps only update when i open the app. which is useless for apps like Rewards, since the surveys expire after 24 hours, so go knows how many i have missed since i moved this this phone. I've never had this type of problem with any other android phone, and i;ve had a fair number of them over the years. At this point, since i am not able to return the phone i am thinking that i might have to do a factory reset, and hope for the best.

altaz, no need mine works now. just follow my previous post in this thread.
Just got mine today. No remorse here, and hey there might be a rom to flash once the US variant comes out. I love this phone.
I'll have buyers remorse if one of these other A72 devices gets the same battery life and camera for <$400
I love it coming from note 5. No regrets. Glad i didnt wait for mobile congress as i was very dissapointed with both lg and samsung. Love the mate 8
i agree, while LG had some nifty ideas regarding that modularity, all in all im not much impressed with either the G5 or S7 line... happy camper with my mate 8 indeed
This is probably the first phone I ever got that I didn't get buyers remorse hours after buying it. I've come from a S5, S4 and original Note before.
hours after buying? only phone? well that sounds like someone didnt do proper research first

Hello.
I am from germany. My Mate 8 is a chinese one with original B162 Rom. Notifications don`t work for me.
What i did:
data in sleep mode enabled
apps are allowed to stay active at sleep
notification in priority mode
rooted device
made WhatsApp and Android Wear (for my huawei watch) to system apps with Titanium Backup (i bought it before ...)
freeze phone manager
I dont`t get my notifications all the time. Very bad are notifications for my huawei watch. My phone rings (WhatsApp), but my watch doenst. Then i start the Android Wear app and the notifications are pushed to my watch.
The phone is ok. I am coming from Samsung S6 Edge+. But the notifications MUST come always.
What else can i try?
(sorry for my bad english)
I had only notification issues with whatsapp - however the situation has improved greatly after I installed the app Push Notification fixer ( no root version)
Now I'd say missed notifications is very very much lessen, probably around 10+ % only
All my other apps eg Maildroid ( only mail app I used), Friendcaster, some newsfeed app, XDA etc no notification problems at all
Mine is China set on B156 firmware ( non rooted)

EMUI killing application during Deep Sleep

Hello team,
As you probably know, there is probably an issue in EMUI and killing «automatic processes» application like Tasker & Macrodroid even though they are activated in protected mode and in ignore list of optimization.
I have tried Tasker & Macrodroid as far now without any luck. EMUI version NXT-L29C432B320
Any advise please ?

Hi,
go to Settings - Battery - energy plan
and set it to performance
This should fix it
Thanks for answer. I had already test it without luck.
Just a correction, my version is B180 not 320

Any news guys ? I only have this problem?
Come guys. Please, no one has this problem?
I have problems on this with Tasker and other apps not being able to stay on in the Accessibility.
I can't keep up my sleep cycle alarm up all night ._. this is ultra annoying. Not only I can't send smses from 3rd pty apps like mighty text, or pushbullet, but now I can't even use these apps, which sleep crappy EMUi.
I'm running Android 7.0 with EMUI 5.1 on Huawei P10 and I experienced that my Runkeeper is killed time to time as well.
I just found a hidden menu with battery optimization. Go to Settings >> Apps >> Settings (a gear icon at the bottom) >> Special access >> Ignore battery optimization. Found your app and disallow the optimization.
I haven't tried that yet but it might help.
update: no, it does not work, Runkeeper is still being killed :-/

I can confirm this does not solve the problem. On my Honor 9 (EMUI 5.1) Tasker still gets killed from time to time. I also checked Run in foreground + Show notification icon in Tasker options.

Mate 9 with runkeeper

Hello, I am actually using Mate 9 Pro, but I thought that more users here so I wanted to ask you one question.
I yesterday noticed that when I try to log my run with runkeeper, the app always closes when I quit it. It doesn't happen with any other phone I have (Nexus 6P and OnePlus3T) nor doesn't happen with other run trackers. But Runkeeper is just unusable.
Is the same problem with Mate 9 also?
OT: Where did you buy the Pro ?
Same problem
I have the exact same problem with Runkeeper on my new Huawei Mate 9 Pro:
When the screen locks, either automatically or through me pushing the lock button, the tracking stops...
Mine was bought in Norway where I live...
Anyone?
There is a standard setting in EMUI in which apps default auto close when screen is off. This can be changed, but you need to get into something like Settings -> apps -> [Your App] -> Battery

No its not this since every other running app does work well. I just don't want to change to other app after using runkeeper for several years now

Huawei mate 9 vs runkeeper
I have a same problem with my huawei mate 9. Before I had Honor 7, and runkeeper always stopped with it too when the screen is off. So I think the problem is maybe with the EMUI...
I made the settings which you mentioned below, but doesn' t help.
Anyone, is there any solution?
I know it doesn't help but I haven't noticed any issue on my UK Mate 9.
There was a Runkeeper app update yesterday - check if you have the most up-to-date version.

I have the same issues with Huawei Mate 9 Pro and endomondo. Try changing the power settings for runkeeper in:
Settings->battery->power saving from apps->close apps on screen lock->runkeeper - disable
And:
Settings->apps->settings->special access->ignore battery optimizations->runkeeper->allow
I have done this and but still have some issues with endomondo.
Tried to install GPS locker to keep a lock on GPS while using endomondo even if I do believe it is a power issue.
But maybe it will work for you?
I'm on the B156 software.
I know this is less ideal, try converting to a system app and see if that works.

Exercise app turns off early

I'm having an intermittent issue (1 in 20 times) whereby the exercise app I use just turns off before I'm done. I've used the same app for years without issue, but notice its on Mate-9 or Android-7 as an issue? Any suggestions please? I've tried other apps and same has happened on this device so I'm thinking not an app issue.
I am having the same issue with some gaming apps

It could happen when you're using old-api application and internal task-killer preferred to unload your app from memory.
Press square button to get recent apps and press icon with lock to hold app always in memory.

No luck I'm afraid. I tried three times successfully using this method then the forth time it was back to the usual rubbish result of app stopping early during the exercise with the lock to hold app in lock position.
I'm open to other ideas please? As it stands the Mate-9 has proved useless to monitor fitness routines. I've written to Huawei support about it (in London UK) and they just say to wait for an o/s update in future!
I suggest you to give up on it. Huawei phones can't work correctly with sports tracking app for YEARS. Probably all their phones have same issues. Just google it and you will find other suckers like us.
Also, Mate 9 is completely inaccurate during the time it tracks (pre-crash). It must be related with different problem - GPS sucks too. Look for GPS thread in this forum to keep you updated.
Last version of Strava app shows in-app alert which says that their app can't work correctly with my device (Mate 9). It still allows me to use it. So, they gave up on us.
My suggestion is to get some old/backup phone and use it for tracking. E.g. I'm using my good old faithful Samsung Galaxy S4.

This phone is looking worse and worse every day I wonder if it will support at least MiFit and Mi Band fitness tracker? Can't crash there, right?!
Anyone found a solution to this yet please? On my Mate-9 - now build B189 the problem seems to be that my exercise app using GPS stops working anytime after about 70 minutes of exercise (I cycle outdoors). If I interact with the app during exercise (such as pause - resume) every hour I can continue recording the exercise for full duration, otherwise after around 70 minutes my apps stop without notice. On other devices same apps work. Seems to be an issue with my Mate-9, anyone else notice this and or fix it?

Since Huawei updated me to Android 8 the problem no longer exists. Its taken a year to get to love this phone. I still cannot get myself to like the Mate-10 so will stay with this as I now for the first time since owning the Mate-9 have no issues at all with it.

I use a bike computer but was having issues with Strava live tracking, I think I have it resolved but not totally sure.
For some bizarre reason there are two places to exclude apps from power management:
Settings/Apps & notifications/Apps/Settings/Special access/Exempt from battery optimization/*Drop Down* All apps/*Allow/Don't Allow*
&
Settings/Battery/Launch/*Toggle On/Off*

Mate 9 Pro - Android Oreo - EMUI 8 - notification issues

After upgrading (non-root), I have several apps (Snapchat, Tidio, Shopify just to name some) where notifications don't work anymore.
I've been in contact with both Huawei and the app providers - but noone can solve the problem - accusing each other for causing the problem.
I've tried a bunch of thing including letting these apps override battery saver mode, launch them in background, never go hibernate etc - but nothing worked.
Does anyone have a solution to this?
when i upgraded to oreo my email wouldnt give me notifications or display the email either no matter what i tried. It only got fixed after a wipe and reset.

The model? As described in topic it's a Huawei Mate 9 Pro
Purchased through a national phone company.
i was having problems with my regular Mate 9 and notifications.
i tried a bunch of stuff, probably messed some settings up. But I went to
Settings > Battery > Launch
and changed it to "Manage all automatically"
then clicked on "Manage batch manually"
and checked all 3 boxes for All
and I think that fixed it. However it might be overkill, and I'm not sure what impact it has had on my battery yet

Agree. I'm also down to around 10% now, I guess - mainly Shopify an Snapchat problems - but I hope they'll be sorted out with future updates.
