QB1 update w/ Hotspot - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note5

I Odin to stock QA1 and took this QB1 update. My apn are not greyed out and I can edit to add ,dun and have Hotspot. I was having trouble getting Hotspot on QA1 so I thought others might.

I don't have Hotspot and Tethering in settings, but can edit the APN . How do you edit the APN to get the Hotspot to work? The device I try to connect never gets a IP

I took the update last night, but I am still unable to edit that part of the APN (most entries are grayed out even after going into "edit" mode and entering MSL).
Are you on stock unrooted? Maybe you found a lucky fluke?

Yes pure stock when I edited my apn. Hmm now I want to know if it's just a fluke.

Probably a fluke 'coz mine is greyed out too. But it's a progress 'coz as far as I remember, with previous updates it wasn't even there.

On a positive note, the reboot trick still works like a charm. Perhaps with other carriers including tethering with their plans Sprint will decide to include a gig or two of free tethering. I'm not looking to use my Sprint service as my primary ISP, but for the few times/year I'm travelling and don't have wifi, being able to tether would be super handy.

Reboot trick is broken with Nougat update. It works at first then after a few minutes that message pops up saying you need to upgrade to Hotspot plan and then disconnects. Arrrr :/.

Damn... so obnoxious.

With everyone else bringing back some form of unlimited and including some teathering, sprint will have to step up..
Sent from my SM-N920P using Tapatalk

Sprint has a new unlimited plan which includes 10GB per month of hotspot which is plenty. Problem for me is I'd go from paying under $50 (old Framily Plan) to over $60 per mo just to add hotspot. No thanks.
I have heard that Android Pay DOES work with root. I believe you have to perform magisk systemless root. I'm researching now. I beleive most if not all places I shop at accepts Android Pay.

Root with Magisk and Android Pay works!
Root with this method (,didn't find this method on XDA): http://galaxynote5root.com/galaxy-n...galaxy-note-5-on-android-7-0-nougat-w-magisk/
Edit APN works via this method:

I have hotspot back AND Android Pay (same as Samsung Pay for me)!

How does the hotspot blocking work? When you try to activate it, it sends information to Sprint and Sprint tells the phone to activate the hotspot? Without manually editing the APN settings (which are now blocked) there is no way to fake the response to the phone to get it to unlock the hotspot?

Does SAMSUNG pay work with that method. They are NOT the same (but not sure how much that will matter when everything is upgraded to chip technology anyway).

Samsung Pay doesn't work. BUT Android Pay is the same for my purposes. Why do you need Samsung pay over Android?

1. Samsung pay offers promotions, especially the sign up offers (which I took full advantage of)
2. Samsung pay works with any swipe reader while Android pay is NFC which has to be activated (some stores specifically disable that functionality)
3. I'm concerned NOT having access to Samsung Pay might reduce the resale value of my phone
In all honesty, without a promotion, I don't use SamPay much. I'm most concerned about #3 above.

Oh I see. I don't care about the promotions and the handful of stores I shop at accept Android Pay. #3 is a good point for resale value. This phone has a broken screen so it will be replaced under extended warranty so not worried about selling it. Although I may want to sell the replacement once I get the Note 8. Hmmm....

I have no empirical evidence to suggest that Samsung Pay is a huge selling point and I guess if you wanted you could be shady and not even mention it if selling on Craigslist or something. I checked a bunch of ebay ads, none of them mention anything about rooting or Samsung Pay so I don't really know.

My note 5 stopped working so had to upgrade to an s8+. Found this work around for it. Maybe it will help you guys out.
1. Download Shortcut Master Lite
2. Search for LTEfunctionality
3. Click on com.test.LTEfunctionality
4. Launch
5. Scroll down to LTE APN Setting
6. Add " ,dun " to APN2 LTE and EHRPD internet under APN type. That line should read default, mms, dun when you finish.
7. Native Hotspot should work. You may have to do this hack again if you update Profile.

WiFi Hotspot Will NOT Be the $20 / 2 Gig Plan

I went back into my local Verizon store a few days after buying my 'bolt and I saw new signs heavily promoting the unlimited Hotspot.
I looked closely at the fine print on the signage and it stated that new and existing Thunderbolt customers will have to subscribe to a Hotspot data plan after May 15, 2011. $20 / 2 gig plan not available.
I asked the rep who sold me my 'bolt and he confirmed that the $20 plan will not be available for the Hotspot, and that Verizon has not yet announced what the cost and plan will be.
I rely on the Hotspot feature of my N1, using it daily. I'm not too keen on locking myself into a one year contract on a phone without knowing up front what the full cost of the plan will be, and what the terms are.
My bet is that they're going to follow in AT&T's $40 / 4 gig footstep and offer up a $50 / 5 gig plan which includes the Hotspot feature, requiring those who want it to give up unlimited data.
I call foul. They should announce the cost of the Hotspot now so those of us who rely on it and who want to use it without resorting to alternative means, can know the full cost before locking themselves into a contract.
Edited to include a pic, taken with my bolt

Root; Wireless Tether.
@ lorijuan1024 - Except for the fact that every sign in the store that advertised the unlimited Hotspot through 5/15 stated "$20 / 2 gig plan not available" in the fine print, and the Verizon rep confirmed that it would NOT be available...
@ ikon8 - I've rooted and used Wireless Tether on other phones, wasn't happy with the performance, not as good as the stock app. That is why I switched to the N1, it's native OS functionality
Exactly,
If u root and run WiFi tether, u won't need the hotspot, I feel the tether is better anyway!

So I agree Wireless Tether is the easy solution, and though on rare occasions I've had issues w/ wireless tether so far on my thunderbolt it seems to be work as good if not better than the mobile hotspot (which has also had published issues). I also have gotten the same speeds on each actually on some cases the wireless tether speeds might have been faster. You could always go with the free wired tethering solutions such as pdanet, which doesn't even require rooting.
I cant wait for them to tell me, "They are going to charge me more"...It will be a good fight...

So you can have slightly degraded performance with the hack/app that gives you tethering for free, or you can pay an amount of money that seems to have you upset for slightly better performance.
Seems like a no-brainer to me, but YMMV.
BTW, I've not tested wireless tether on my TB, but it's been a staple on older phones with android and it always performed as well as the phone could give.
+1 Root, Wifi Router
its because its not 2 gigs its unlimited for 30$ a month for hotspot coming in may....
I doubt unlimited for only $30/month. Verizon would be crazy.

Yes, they would be.
If that does somehow end up being true, I might just have to cancel my Qwest DSL and use my phone. Who would have thought 6 years ago that we'd be doing that?
The $30 unlimited is staying, but that applies only to data used BY THE PHONE, not tethered devices.
The extra charge ($20 for 2gb is commonly quoted, though when I looked on the vzw site, the thresholds were 1, 3, 5 and 10gb) is a separate and additional charge for data used by 'consumers' of the WiFi Hotspot app.
So that means regardless you will have to pay $30 for unlimited data to your phone, but on top of that, after May 15th, you'll have to pay extra to keep using WiFi Hotspot. I guess this app somehow identifies traffic as coming from a tethered device so VZ can account it (that or WiFi hotspot does not do NAT, but instead acts as a bridge and so gets an IP address direct from VZ rather than the phone, which makes it easy for VZ to count the data usage - or it could even have the WiFi hotspot app phoning home to report data usage, I don't know).
When you root and use WiFi tether, it's doing the same thing as WiFi Hotspot, however the VZ network never knows you're even tethering anything, so they can't charge for it (WiFi tether does not tag packets, and does NAT so the IP address the tethered device gets comes from the phone, and is never sent beyond the phone). This means that according to VZ, all the data is coming from the phone and is therefore subject to the required $30 unlimited fee anyway.
If you don't want to root and don't mind tethering use PdaNet......
also should of added on my earlier comment rep said was 2gb so i was thinking screw that

I use this feature as my primary source of internet access - slightly degraded performance to someone who uses not as much may not mean as much to someone who relies on it.
Besides, the main point of my post is that Verizon isn't disclosing the full cost of this "bundled" plan, phone data and Hotspot data, until after we're locked into a contract.
I jumped onto the phone as soon as it was released to lock in the unlimited data, like most everybody else in this forum did...
I think we agree that wireless tether is an option, my preference however would be to use the stock app, purely from a reliability standpoint.
WiFi Tether is an option, but not as a primary source of internet. Verizon runs programs that look for unusual data usage (on the 'unlimited' plan) and they may bill or throttle you. If you use WiFi Tether occasionally you shouldn't have a problem. But be careful. Enormous bills have been reported.

I searched a lot about them detecting unauthorized wireless tethering and haven't found many people who got caught, I've seen posts from people stating usage exceeding 15GB and never getting caught, do you know how much data people were using that got caught?
I only use it occasionally, and never had a problem.
I really doubt they can detect tethering. If you tether and visit some websites from your computer, how are the packets verizon sees any different from using a mobile browser with the user agent set to desktop?

They use VZW and GSM (AT&T and some TM). To use your captivate you have to buy one of their nokia GSM smartphones and use the sim out of them. The phones cost $200 from Walmart. Plus you can't sell the nokia because the SIM is tied to the nokia and if someone else tries to activate the nokia they'll deactive your sim. It's a great deal for $45 a month unlimited everything using AT&Ts network.
You could buy a damaged St e71 on eBay and return yours but keep sim. Then when they cut it off call and say Hey! The phone was bad! Here's the imei of the phone I'm using (damaged St e71 imei). They'll say Oh! Sorry! Well send you a new sim! Then when you get it, activate and you're good to go.
Its not going to get you into heaven or make you friends but it works. Just saying.

The info was pretty easy to find for me....I used Howard Forums website to find the info. Are you sure everything is working properly? Mine is the same except for the MMS Proxy....mine is "proxy.mvno.tracfone.com"...which makes sense since Tracfone actually owns ST. I can definitely verify mine is working in all respects.....been using my Inspire with ST for months. Problems that you could run into if it's wrong would be with multimedia messaging. If yours is ok then I guess we have two working settings here.

Yeah I saw that too. The problem wouldn't be with ST though...not really. AT&T is the only one losing out in this situation. The big thing is not to abuse the data usage. There a few idiot noobs out there who decided to use the tethering to basically replace their home internet connection.....umm....can you say stupid? They, of course, ended up with their data cut off. I have been using my Inspire on ST for months with no issues....and I tether and do everything you'd want to do with a smart phone. I just don't stream internet radio and Netflix 24/7(yes....people are doing this....then they get cut off). Bottom line, if your smart about it, it's doubtful ST will ever do anything about you using a different phone. Hopefully, others don't ruin it for the rest of us.
this is awesome. i had looked at tracphone plans before but you dont get much, i was unaware strait talk had smart phones on att with data plans. i will have to try this.
Just adding a little info here. This will work with just about any AT&T GSM phone as long as you are able to change the APN info on it. Black berries won't completely work since they have their own special network for some services(at least as far as I know....there could be some settings to allow for this too, but I doubt it). Android phones and Iphones are the most common. Some andoid phones use one APN and some use two. If you get it wrong then you may notice you have no MMS. Also, in some cases people have had issues with MMS when they don't delete the AT&T APN. On Iphones you'll have to be jailbroken to change the MMS settings...but you can get everything else to work without it. On Iphone 4 you'll have to cut the SIM card to a smaller size since the use micro SIMs...special cutters are on ebay for that along with adapters to allow the SIM to fit back into the larger slots should you ever change your mind.
Also.....never call ST customer service with the SIM card in the phone.....use the ST phone....they CAN see your imei number at that point and will know that you are using a different phone. Also, you HAVE to keep your ST phone....if someone else tries to activate it on another account your SIM will get deactivated. More info is at the Howard Forums website...just google that along with 'Straight Talk Android' or 'Straight Talk Iphone'...it should get you to the right info.

No the Captivate doesn't have to be unlocked or even rooted for that matter. The SIM is unlocked. Just the APN has to be changed and that can be done with APN Backup and Restore from the market. Backup the AT&T APN just in case you want it later, then delete it. After that you just need to create a new APN for Straight Talk.
Remember....this only works with the Straight Talk smart phones that sell for about $200 at Walmart...they are the only ones on AT&T.....and they have to use the $45 service card.

This is completely and utterly wrong! They can't compare LTE customers to HSPA in terms of data usage. Verizon has had LTE network for a year with 180 million americans blanketed, tons of LTE devices, and they've never bothered their LTE with crap like that. I've used 80GB at one point, no issues. They actually prefer their customers getting on LTE and offloading their EvDO network.
I'm at about 3.5Gb on my Skyrocket, so far so good, but then again, I only have HSPA+...

A phone call is all it takes to get unlimited back.
I found a work around that you can test to see if it works on your device. I too was throttled down to 100k after receiving the texts. I now am getting HPSA speeds...better than 100k...so I'm getting around 2-7 mbps..which will be sufficient til the end of my billing cycle.
Got the message from AT&T as well. The problem that I have I can't check how much data I've used so far. I moved from my Infuse to the Skyrocket, login to the AT&T website and I am sitting @ 2 GB. This is just ridiculous. When I had the Infuse, I was burning anywhere from 12 to 14 GB per month and AT&T never sent me any messages.
2745.65 of 10238976 used
This is what it shows in the AT&T website. I don't think I will ever be close to that number, but come on, 2 GB. This is a joke.
PS. I am still using their LTE network though, I am just wanna see if they really will throttle my speed.

Hey opencipher, what is the work around for anyone that has been throttled?. I am afraid that I am getting close to the 5GB limit and don't want to have 100kb connections. In my area HSPA+ connections are pretty good so I wouldn't mind if I can switch back while throttled.
Thanks!!
haven't seen many of you experiencing the issue.
att has an app that will auto connect you to am att wifi hotspot if one its avail. I use it to also check my usage.

Change the APN. Go to Settings. Wireless Networks. Mobile Settings. Access Point Names
Click on the Settings button and add a New APN.
Name it whatever. I used the settings from another thread and named it ATT HSPA+
APN: Phone
APN Type: Internet.
Left everything else blank. You won't get MMS but you have to create another APN for that, but even doing that I still can't send/receive MMS. But, I'm willing to sacrifice that for the speeds until the end of my cycle when I switch back to the normal ATT APN.
Now, here is the weird part and it takes some trial and error. When I switch to the new APN, reboot, I have to call the phone and let it sit there for a few minutes. Also disable Juice Defender. Not sure if it has anything with Juice Defender cutting the radio on and off. After a few minutes it switches to the other APN and will not access the LTE APN at all. And for some reason I get normal HSPA speeds. You can mess around with it and see what happens.
Some times it would take about 15 minutes to see the speed change..sometimes it happens right away. Not sure why..but its working for me.

You are not supposed to loose it over a device swap. That is / was a mistake and can be corrected. call 611 and get data support.

You're assuming that's why Da_G got moved from Unlimited to 2GB. That's not why he lost his unlimited plan...

Verizon's Galaxy S3 - using on Straight Talk

So,
I've read with android v4.1.2, this phone is factory unlocked. If I cancel my contract with verizon, can i switch directly over to Straight Talk (on AT&T network)? Is there something more I need to do besides maybe a factory restore? I would appreciate any help or if this topic has been shared already and i have over-looked it, please point me in the right direction.
Thank you.
You'll have to have it flashed to ST. PM Viper32. I'm gonna get him to do mine when this month is up.
Sent from my S3, because iPhone is faget.
So this can be done now? Anyone got any instructions on how to do this? This would be greatly appreciated.

I need to do this as well. My Verizon contract is up and I want to take my S3 over to Straight Talk.

Guys, I just installed Beanstown Build 16 and applied these APN settings. That will get data and MMS working:

As far as I've heard, the data connection is EDGE only without 3G or 4G. Is this correct?

I've got 3G, or what seems like 3G on it. But I've yet to achieve 4g, and it'll probably never happen with this phone.

How much data are you using? The talk around town is that breaking 2gb will get you the boot. What's your experience?

My honest opinion? With these speeds, you'd be hard pressed to use that much data. I can't speak on ST policy or know why they'd boot you. Seems a bit ridiculous. Unless you go over your plan?

I used to be a Straight Talk customer with my HTC One X. I left them due to the terrible service, and not having the same reception and priority as AT&T, even though I had an AT&T SIM in it. You be warned and dropped if you use over 2Gb of data. You can be warned and dropped, if you use streaming video (youtube etc...)
Their plans simply arent designed for that. And you cant blame them.... as youre only paying $45/month here in the U.S. If you want more data. If you want more data without limits on how you use it (streaming video etc...) then you need a bigger plan from a different carrier. You cant expect it all, for $45/month.
Also, I dont think any company like straight talk, will give you 4G. They are piggybacking off of the towers of big carriers.... those carriers dont want you clogging up their 4G network through Straight Talk (or any other) for only $45/month

I have an unlocked Motorola Atrix HD (AT&T) Ive been using on ST for close to a year. At first, I only had "fake 4g" aka hspa+ which isnt terrible. My speeds were between 4-6 mbps.
The day I heard att was allowing lte on st I bought a new lte compatible sim from st for $7. I threw it in my phone, updated my apns and have been running lte ever since. Speeds are between 8 - 16 mbps now.
Only issue is sometimes ppl dont get my texts. Its really random so it hasnt been enough of an issue for me to change anything. I probably just need to tweak my apn but its fine for now.
As for streaming, I stream music quite a bit, youtube any time I want, and even netflix a time or two. Never had an issue. Now I also use less than 2gigs a month. For whatever all thats worth

Help with unlocking phone to GSM carrier

Is there a tutorial or guide to unlock the note 5 or do I have to pay these websites or someone from Craigslist. This seems to be like a secret people cashing in on. I had sprint recently took my services to metro pc now I have 3 useless phones. I might sell them if I can't get it to work on metro without a lot of trouble. I can't even find nothing on YouTube they all asking for money and I really don't trust any website with my cc information

I paid a service to unlock spr note 5 and I use it on att. Different services cost different amounts. I used Idoneapps and can not complain. Price was a bit higher than others but it comes with their app. Ability to re unlock if need be. Access to radio settings via their app. Shop around. Just make sure it isnt a cheap scam site. Google.

Local guy told me 80 at his shop is that a fair price
Sent from my Z981 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I paid 39$ with Idoneapps. Ive seen others pay less with other services. 80 seems a bit steep. But that is local. I would look around more.

Pay to get it unlocked. Or do it through the carrier if you meet their requirements.

How to check note 5 Sprint is unlocked or No?
I unlocked it through the Sprint website, if that is the same unlocking were talking about. On the sprint site it says my Note 5 is unlocked but when I put in my AT&T sim it says invalid sim. No unlock code pops up, I'm thinking the phone needs to be re programmed to AT&T settings?
To carrier unlock it just pay the 34.99 from idoneapp app . Took less than 2 minutes now my phone works on every carrier . Using my sprint version on metro pc with no issuses

metro PCS at where I live sucks...im using ATT and cannot get LTE...I did once actually but it switched to roaming some martiland or something and it actually was slower than ATT 3g...
Now i need to consider metro then...been playing and testing out the carriers, changed every month from Straight talk (used 3years) to cricket (bad choice) to freedompop (worked good on my iphone 6s but data messes up on my Note 5, I hate to deal with that) then to ATT...Not 100% happy but dont see any other choices...I may check Metro PCS but coverage here is not good...
Sprint just unlocked mine with a few calls and 3 days of waiting. I can now insert my AT&T sim and not get the invalid sim error. Now I get "Unable to establish a wireless data connection". Add the AT&T APN and everything looks OK but I'm sure I'm missing a step.

Sprint is even worse here lol. I never even considered sprint, especially when I got the phone as a gift, I called their customer service, and they say I can only use postpaid service. So i got idoneapps and unlocked the phone and was using GSM actually. i actually looked on Metropcs website I didn't see they have compatible plans with n920p? But since they are GSM company now they sure use sim card then...I will do more research.
On ebay there's a seller who does it for 7usd.. done it from him.. worked well. He is from spain. Then root it and flash one of the ROMs to enable 4g on gsm carriers.
