AT&T LTE Rate limiting - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

all:
a few days ago I received the infamous 5% email. I am currently sitting at 4.9GB of data usage on the unlimited LTE grandfathered plan. when all of a sudden my up/down is now at 100k/100k almost symmetrical.
wanted to check with a panel of my peers. have any of you experienced this?

Wrong section for this post. I'm sure plenty of other people are going to tell you momentarily.

only issue is that this is the only forum for the lte device and figured you guys would be the proud few who would use data similarly.
lol I'm only 10days in to the Billing period.

This is completely and utterly wrong! They can't compare LTE customers to HSPA in terms of data usage. Verizon has had LTE network for a year with 180 million americans blanketed, tons of LTE devices, and they've never bothered their LTE with crap like that. I've used 80GB at one point, no issues. They actually prefer their customers getting on LTE and offloading their EvDO network.
I'm at about 3.5Gb on my Skyrocket, so far so good, but then again, I only have HSPA+...

A phone call is all it takes to get unlimited back.

I found a work around that you can test to see if it works on your device. I too was throttled down to 100k after receiving the texts. I now am getting HPSA speeds...better than 100k...so I'm getting around 2-7 mbps..which will be sufficient til the end of my billing cycle.

Got the message from AT&T as well. The problem that I have I can't check how much data I've used so far. I moved from my Infuse to the Skyrocket, login to the AT&T website and I am sitting @ 2 GB. This is just ridiculous. When I had the Infuse, I was burning anywhere from 12 to 14 GB per month and AT&T never sent me any messages.
2745.65 of 10238976 used
This is what it shows in the AT&T website. I don't think I will ever be close to that number, but come on, 2 GB. This is a joke.
PS. I am still using their LTE network though, I am just wanna see if they really will throttle my speed.

You are not supposed to loose it over a device swap. That is / was a mistake and can be corrected. call 611 and get data support.

Hey opencipher, what is the work around for anyone that has been throttled?. I am afraid that I am getting close to the 5GB limit and don't want to have 100kb connections. In my area HSPA+ connections are pretty good so I wouldn't mind if I can switch back while throttled.
Thanks!!

haven't seen many of you experiencing the issue.
att has an app that will auto connect you to am att wifi hotspot if one its avail. I use it to also check my usage.
this is more of an annoyance than anything, luckily I have a vzw charge a well, with unlimited data and unlimited tether/hotspot. glad I jumped on that!

Change the APN. Go to Settings. Wireless Networks. Mobile Settings. Access Point Names
Click on the Settings button and add a New APN.
Name it whatever. I used the settings from another thread and named it ATT HSPA+
APN: Phone
APN Type: Internet.
Left everything else blank. You won't get MMS but you have to create another APN for that, but even doing that I still can't send/receive MMS. But, I'm willing to sacrifice that for the speeds until the end of my cycle when I switch back to the normal ATT APN.
Now, here is the weird part and it takes some trial and error. When I switch to the new APN, reboot, I have to call the phone and let it sit there for a few minutes. Also disable Juice Defender. Not sure if it has anything with Juice Defender cutting the radio on and off. After a few minutes it switches to the other APN and will not access the LTE APN at all. And for some reason I get normal HSPA speeds. You can mess around with it and see what happens.
Some times it would take about 15 minutes to see the speed change..sometimes it happens right away. Not sure why..but its working for me.

2.23 down, .87 up, 123 ping. Faster than my brother's Clear internet. Haha.
If you set your phone to not use eHRPD (plenty of posts on this forum and elsewhere with explicit instructions), you don't have to worry about 1x. I haven't heard of anyone setting their phone to use EvDO Rev. A and being unable to do so. The EvDO Rev A network seems to be working fine, as long as it uses the original HRPD and not eHRPD. Until we have LTE again, the only downside to disabling eHRPD is that you won't be able to use voice at the same time as EvDO. You can get around this by using a VoIP service like Google Voice or Skype and multi-task that with your other data.
There might be localized outages of EvDO as well, but nationwide, generally speaking, you shouldn't be on 1x today any more than any other day (ofc. if you ALWAYS only get 1x then you won't get anything better today, either...)
That said, more appropriate topic in the thread would be "Post your EvDO Rev. A speeds"
I'm getting 109 ping, 1320kbps down, 105kbps up on EvDO Rev. A in Maryland on my Thunderbolt. I think that's a bit below average -- I certainly remember getting better upstream on my previous EvDO smartphones -- but maybe it's because people are still up at 1AM and the EvDO radios are extra-busy due to the number of people with LTE in the area who are stuck on EvDO tonight. Since I've been in 4G coverage 24/7 since the day I bought my Thunderbolt in March, tonight is the first time I've tried EvDO on the Thunderbolt, and I can't say I'm impressed. But again, it may not be the Thunderbolt, but just the generally problematic state of VZW's network.

Switched from AT&T to Straight Talk!!!

For those of you who don't like shelling out the gobs of cash to AT&T...I have the link for you!
http://www.straighttalksim.com/
I received my AT&T sim in the mail from Straight Talk along with the new APN information...and voila...I'm getting the same (if not faster) download speeds than I was with AT&T. Actually, I've been strangely getting more bars than I was w/AT&T. Not sure why...since it's the same network. Anyways...this transformed my bill from $130 per month to $45 per month for unlimited talk, text and web. I don't work for Walmart or anything...I just wanted to share some savings info with those who are interested! When they say on the website "cut your phone bill in half" they're not kidding! I wonder how Wally World can get away with sending AT&T roms...offer the same service...for half the cost? I dunno...but I'm not complaining!
Now...I doubt you'd get 4G speeds....but I've never truly had 4G speeds...so I'm not missing anything.
Thinking about doing this just to activate the inspire I have laying around with a cracked screen. Its between this, and redpocket

I did this last month. Best decision I ever made. The only catch I've found is that the data isn't really unlimited, it's a use it but don't abuse it policy. I believe they will throttle you if you hog too much.
What radio are you using? I think I need a new one, mine keeps switching between 3G and H.
Been thinking of doing the same thing as soon as my contract is up.. Any activation fees or anything like that? What'd they charge for the sim?
*signed
I have been using Straight Talk for 6months with a sim card from a Nokia E71. This is known as the old sim swap method. Works great roams and all. From everything I've researched this uses the AT&T postpaid network.
The new sim card program they have charges you $14.95 for the sim card, and they had free shipping. NO activation fees or anything else.
This is the best data speed I've gotten though it's not usually this good. I'm using the 12.56.60.25P_26.10.04.03_M radio

The word is if you keep it under 2gb a month and 170mb a day you should be good. Just use 3g watchdog and monitor it. I stream stuff all the time, just be aware of how much data you are using. I've had no problems though I've never exceeded the so called limits.

WOW! That's a lot of data! I would think they will have to come up with some limits if they are going to cut off service because you are using too much so called "unlimited" data. Guess we'll have to wait and see once this thing gets going full bore. If you can keep your usage to 2gb a month and 170mb a day then this is a great deal! If not I wouldn't risk it at this point..
A few months ago another carrier said unlimited data was unlimited but they could make changes if they saw fit for the network. And everyone thought it meant nothing then. Straight Talk says no media streaming and only download from their network. They could turn on you tomorrow too. I see nothing in writing about 2GB.

There are several of of these non-contract companies but not much chat about them. Thanks for starting the thread, op. I have also heard similar talk about the 2Gb. cap, so that poster didn't just make it up. It might not be in writting but it seems to be what the users are experiencing.

ATT sucks because they don't have phone service in your area? No phone carrier has service everywhere. You never should have stayed with ATT in the first place if you didn't have service. And ATT has a 4G network, at least as much as T-mobile does and as the FCC now defines it. They also have LTE which is faster than Verizon's LTE. And what does your post have to do with Straight Talk?
I too have been thinking of going to ST. I don't go over 5gb. I wonder if that is still to much for them. I don't like att as much as the next person but I do have good signal and do get 4G in my area. Has anyone found anything about the 2gb?

I have acquired my last half dozen or so phones from Craigslist (even though I am eligible for an upgrade). I have not (yet) been charged for changing phones. I was able to get away from being 'throttled' this way when I got my Charge off CL for $125. Vzw even gave me a SIM card. I plan to continue this until they force me into some ridiculous fee/plan structure; at which time I will go to Sprint.
I hope ATT will get their LTE network up to par by the time my vzw's contract expires. Then it'll become an apple-to-apple comparison between the two of them, so, with no unlimited plan advantage, who cares anymore. I'll be jumping ship if I have to to get the coolest phone from whomever carries them.

The problem with these guys though is that they have craptastic phones with like no dev community... otherwise I would jump right at them
Hmm i think the real reason they are doing the whole data share thing is because ICS can stop data usage once you hit a certain amount so it foolproofs overage charges... until when you don't have a personal data limit anymore but a shared data limit
My theory is that they are getting ready for the influx of new LTE users that the rumored LTE iPhone is going to bring, because that is going to bring a ton of new LTE traffic in a very short period of time.
Upgrade now or wait?
I have 3 upgrades coming in the next 2 months. I want to use one for galaxy S3. I got a smokin deal right now for Galaxy Nexus. Don't know if I should wait or take nexus?
The reason why Im asking is it is my understanding they are planning to force us to shared data at upgrade... right. Should I upgrade all 3 or take just the nexus or sit and wait? What do you guys think

Poll-Threatened by AT&T for using Wifi Hotspot

Hello, I just wanted to make a poll regarding the usage of the wifi hotspot with disabled entitlement check. I know people got threatened from AT&T for using this service with out their permission, and that they were going to lose the unlimited data plan privilege and be charged for the hotspot service. I don't have an unlimited data plan but I still want to know who got the "letter", whether you have unlimited data plan or not.
If you used this method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1328588) to enable the hotspot service, I will appreciate if you participate in this poll.
Thanks!

I have no idea what happened but everything is good now and my data is back on.

I've had that happen a couple times to me. I have no idea what causes it, but it happened before I ever used tethering.

It's never happened to me... I hope it doesn't happen again.

No I think he is wondering if anyone has got the dreaded "Stop Tethering or we will charge you and remove your unlimited plan" letter from AT&T.

My wife got the email in June. She tethers a little. She had a spike in data usage and maybe threw up a red flag. Guy at at&t store agreed like he had no clue about it. We have both received the throttling email and text. She hasn't used tethering since, scared to lose unlimited but throttled data.
No letters sent to me, but I have a rebuttal prepared for the slim chance that they do. It's got plenty of colorful adjectives to describe my feelings toward them, should they be so inclined to 'threaten' me...

That's about how "professional" I plan on being if they try that crap with me. I've already left Verizon, leaving them a $1,700 dollar bill that I kindly gave my ex- wife in the divorce, and I'm certain I can come up with something equally painfully-in-the-ass for AT&T...

Thank you! Could you cast your vote on the poll above?
Edit: Sorry, never mind! I'm new to this poll system.

I'm glad you didn't phrase that as, "I'm new to this whole poll system". That, my friend, would've caused quite a stir with my childish humor...

Thanks to everyone who cast their votes! I hope more votes keep coming. Although, so far I'm realizing that not many people got the "letter", just one person with unlimited data.

Verizon legally can't stop any users from tethering on their 4G LTE plans (it was included in their LTE spectrum acquisition), which is why they just had to pay off the FCC. AT&T however is allowed to do so.

Tethering had nothing to do with why I left them, that was all decided when my now ex-wife decided in two months that she'd rack up phone bills of over $700 bucks each. I gladly let her have that. But, so far AT&T has been rather good to me. I don't suspect they'll bust my goobers since I've been with them so long...

Verizon's Galaxy S3 - using on Straight Talk

So,
I've read with android v4.1.2, this phone is factory unlocked. If I cancel my contract with verizon, can i switch directly over to Straight Talk (on AT&T network)? Is there something more I need to do besides maybe a factory restore? I would appreciate any help or if this topic has been shared already and i have over-looked it, please point me in the right direction.
Thank you.
You'll have to have it flashed to ST. PM Viper32. I'm gonna get him to do mine when this month is up.
Sent from my S3, because iPhone is faget.
So this can be done now? Anyone got any instructions on how to do this? This would be greatly appreciated.

I need to do this as well. My Verizon contract is up and I want to take my S3 over to Straight Talk.

As far as I've heard, the data connection is EDGE only without 3G or 4G. Is this correct?

I've got 3G, or what seems like 3G on it. But I've yet to achieve 4g, and it'll probably never happen with this phone.

How much data are you using? The talk around town is that breaking 2gb will get you the boot. What's your experience?

My honest opinion? With these speeds, you'd be hard pressed to use that much data. I can't speak on ST policy or know why they'd boot you. Seems a bit ridiculous. Unless you go over your plan?

I used to be a Straight Talk customer with my HTC One X. I left them due to the terrible service, and not having the same reception and priority as AT&T, even though I had an AT&T SIM in it. You be warned and dropped if you use over 2Gb of data. You can be warned and dropped, if you use streaming video (youtube etc...)
Their plans simply arent designed for that. And you cant blame them.... as youre only paying $45/month here in the U.S. If you want more data. If you want more data without limits on how you use it (streaming video etc...) then you need a bigger plan from a different carrier. You cant expect it all, for $45/month.
Also, I dont think any company like straight talk, will give you 4G. They are piggybacking off of the towers of big carriers.... those carriers dont want you clogging up their 4G network through Straight Talk (or any other) for only $45/month

I have an unlocked Motorola Atrix HD (AT&T) Ive been using on ST for close to a year. At first, I only had "fake 4g" aka hspa+ which isnt terrible. My speeds were between 4-6 mbps.
The day I heard att was allowing lte on st I bought a new lte compatible sim from st for $7. I threw it in my phone, updated my apns and have been running lte ever since. Speeds are between 8 - 16 mbps now.
Only issue is sometimes ppl dont get my texts. Its really random so it hasnt been enough of an issue for me to change anything. I probably just need to tweak my apn but its fine for now.
As for streaming, I stream music quite a bit, youtube any time I want, and even netflix a time or two. Never had an issue. Now I also use less than 2gigs a month. For whatever all thats worth
