Xperia z5 softbricked after Sony update - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. I'm new to the site but not new to rooting a device. I have a Sony Xperia Z5 (Stock standard NOT ROOTED). On Friday I got a notification on my phone that a new update is available (1,2Gig). Did the update on Saturday and restarted without any hassles. Just after restarting I got a system msg on the screen that something stopped, I just ignored it and continued using my phone. Saturday night I registered my phone number and waited for a confirmation sms that didn't arrive. After several failed attempts and no sms received, I noticed that after I had a message my sim card was locked. Again this didnt bother me and I did a normal reboot (Hold power and select restart). Nothing happened! Phone did not restart and nothing has worked since. When charger is plugged in I have a flashing red light and when I hold in power I get a solid red light and that is that. I have tried Sony Companion but my phone does not connect with software repair (holding volume down) as per Sony. Volume up and power button also does not restart. I am now looking at flashing the phone and rooting it if possible but have no idea what is the newest firmware available and where I will find it
EDIT: My Xperia is a single sim phone. I installed Flashtool but it also does not pick up my phone. It seems Sony will get a really really crap call from a very p off customer.

Ok downloaded and tried to flash my phone with the version available in another threat in this section. Flashtool doen not see my phone at all. Volume up and connect cable as well as volume down and connect cable gives me NO RESULTS. Tried holding the off button inside the sim tray as well. Only constant is my phone stays dead and the red light flash when I plug in my charger. Been plugged in overnight and still flash red. Should have been green hours ago...

It shouldn't be easily bricked, can you try accessing and pressing the reset button near the sim tray similar to this?

after that, try connecting to PC while holding volume down using Flashtool

Yep tried that also. Sony also doesnt want to accept liability. So keep away from any Sony products. At least Samsung sort out their **** when it happens.

Same on my side. Red light blinking and that is all. Just wonder how many phones was bricked with the last update, Sony has managed to do that in 2012 and 2015 with updates, and in all instances not accepted responsibility for their crap

@Spawnos @tashum
Alright guys, I will (TRY) to help you with some of my experiences.
I have bricked my phone like this a couple of times before, just like in your case I only had a red blinking or constant red led.
The only difference is that for me this didn't just happen after an OTA update, but it was my own mistake for messing up my phone.... but the end problem seems to be the same as you guys have.
First I want to ask, because I think it hasn't been asked or mentioned ( I am sorry if I missed it, just quickly read through the thread).... are the fastboot and flashmode drivers installed correctly aswell?
What Windows versions are you running?
On windows 10 for instance I know there is an additional step where you need to start in advanced startup the PC to be able to install the flashmode driver correctly.
You have to disable driver signature verification ( or what its called) on Windows 10... that much I know since I am a Windows 10 user myself.
Maybe I have always been lucky, this could be why I still have the same Z5 working again today.... but what I did (after making sure all drivers we're installed correctly),
was to just don't give up and keep playing with the phone in combination with Flashtool.... eventually when holding volume down and plugging I would finally get the green indicating flashmode.
What I have found best to do is make sure you have an FTF ready to flash:
IMPORTANT: leave your phone unplugged and completely turned off first, BEFORE doing these steps:
1. Click on the lightning icon and choose flashmode...
2. Choose your firmware...
3. Check every box under wipe. Yes this will wipe everything on the internal storage ( its a bummer I know, but I think you have bigger problems to worry about)...
4. Click flash and let the files prepare for flashing...
5. Once the files are prepared, another window will pop up telling you Flashtool is waiting for phone to be connected in flashmode....
6. Make sure that your phone is completely turned off before plugging it to your PC (Volume button UP + power button should turn it off... wait till you feel three vibration)...
7. Then its time to start pressing volume DOWN button and plug it to PC...
If nothing happens or you just get the red led blinking again, retry starting from step 6.
IMPORTANT: I have found (in my cases) that it was extremely important to have the FTF flashing process prepared BEFORE starting to try to plug to PC while holding volume DOWN button,
because when having the flash process prepared before plugging your phone to PC it can immediatly start the flashing process even if its just a millisecond that you're getting a tiny little green light.
Additionally if the above didn't work ( make sure you don't give up too easy on it ).....
You can try taping your volume UP button + the power button (while they are both pressed in) for about atleast 8-12 hours ( to get the battery completely discharged) and then try the above flashtool steps again.
I have never had to do this taping step myself before, but I have heard stories where it worked.
I don't know if any of this will work for you guys, but I just felt like I needed to share some of my experience about this with you
I wish you guys good luck, patience.... and keeping my fingers crossed :fingers-crossed:

Help!!! after hard spl intalation htc raphael doesn't respose!!!

Please help me guys . I tried to flash my phone. I conetcted the phone with active synch then on compiuter start the hard spl exe. Then i wait 2 minits and on my computer screen pop up new window and there write coz error 260. So then i dosconect the usb from pc , pick up the phone baterry wait 3 second then put battery to the phone but still doesn't response. I can push tur on button or reset button . But nothink!!!! please help what i need to do?
Before you flashed, you did make sure that you installed Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 (mentioned in that same post)
Did any of the following happen?
*DO NOT start another process while the flashing process is taking place*
*DO NOT click off of the status bar... Let it stay in the foreground*
*DO NOT let the Screensaver activate*
(any of these can lead to a bad flash and possibly brick your phone)

If so, then you have possibly bricked your phone, my friend
Also, did you wait for it to sync and can you enter bootloader? Hold the volume down key and press the power key/reset button and release the volume down key when you see the multi-color screen.
Additionally, you should be able to remove all cards and your battery and be able to get into bootloader mode by holding the volume down key and connecting to your computer.

I tried now to do it i insrt usb to pc and pocket pc then hold volume down key. But nothing. Mayby you have skype i wna to comunicate with you faster. And maybe you can help to me wat can i do now. Thx for answering
How long did you hold the volume down key? I have to wait at least 2 - 3 seconds from when I connect the cable to my device as I have the USB cable already connected to my PC. In other words, hold the volume key down while you are doing all of this, till you see the multicolor screen.
i can hold it 3 or even 6 minits. but you say something about the colours. when i install the spl with synchronization my phone just like died. i dont know wats hapen. and now i dont see any colours on my phone screen. now the screen is black.when i put battery in my phone about after 3 hours my phone back a litle worm. i dont know what to do.
That sounds like you bricked it. Sorry to hear but if you are positive that you did everything as the post I linked you to, mentioned, then it should work. I'm not sure where the process stopped working for you but perhaps you can try retracing the steps? Although, it does sound like you missed a step and now you're phone is bricked. I'm also not sure if you understand what I am saying or asking you to do but I guess if it isn't working, it just isn't working?
Synchronized Well I just shook my phone and the program's EXE file in the SPL. and then there shook far, far away and then threw away so that you do not click anything, not combine any other program. I do and do it. I've been waiting for. Then I look at my phone screen and blacked everything. Then dropped onto a computer error 260th And I do not know what I can do. It does not RESPOND at all. Even though I tried hard reset but still nothing happens. Maybe I should try to flash the phone to make a micro sd? Once uploaded there y card and then pressing a few buttons to be there? Extend the writing maybe?
I'm not 100% sure this will work unless you have HARD-SPL flashed to your device; which is where we stalled out the last time.
Once you have the stock ROM, rename it to RAPHIMG.nbh. Copy just that file to the root of your microSD (preferably a FAT32 formatted microSD but not required). Then, remove the SIM and hold the volume down key while you press the reset button and continue to hold the volume down key till you see the onscreen instructions. According to THIS post, this method should work for flashing a ROM. I am am not able to really say for sure that it does as I never really used or had to use the microSD flashing option.
This doesn't work to maybe i can somehow reinstall the original htc touch pro soft?
The only OTHER way would be through USB from bootloader but if you find it difficult to get that far, I don't know how else to help you my friend.
Maybe you can write a detail lession how can i do this? how can i louch that bootloader . Please help i realy need your help
Try it this way exactly:
Remove your battery, SIM and microSD. Now plug your USB cable to your device (not the computer). Hold the volume key down and plug the other end of the USB cable to your computer and wait till the multicolor screen comes up. If you do not see the multicolor screen, this may be an indication that the USB cord may be messed up (try another in this case), it may be the USB port (try another in this case) OR worse case senario, your phone is just plain bricked my friend...
Additionally, you may need to try another computer.
Once you get into bootloader we will need to go ahead and get hard-spl onto your device.
First, let me know when you get to the bootloader screen...
This doesn't work to ;(((((((((
I don't know what to say, it is sounding more and more like you've bricked your phone. Have you tried another cable / another USB port / another computer?
So, which raphael do you have? CDMA or GSM? And which hard spl did you flash: CDMA or GSM? And did you flash the raphael hard spl, or did you do something like flash the diamond hard spl (or the unlocker)?
If soft resetting the phone doesn't bring it back, then it's probably bricked. I have a feeling you flashed the wrong bootloader for the device.
so if i bricked my phone. No i can just throw it to the dump. or maybe i i send this phone to the repair shop. Maybe they gona repair it?
So, what bootloader did you flash, and what model do you have? If it's the wrong combo, I guess you could sell it on ebay for spare parts. You're not likely to get it fixed.
i have t-mobile mda htc touch pro. and i tried to flash it with Raphael_VZW_HSPL_035
My friend, if you flashed that to your phone, your phone is now bricked from what I can tell. T-Mobile is GSM, that HSPL looks to belong to Verizon which is CDMA. I could be wrong but if you failed to read, then obviously you really didn't need to do it. :enter sad face of choice here:
It's dead. Just put it up for sale on ebay; someone may give you 20-50 bucks for it.

I haven't sent my device to local support. If your device is still under warranty, they will do everything freely. But sometimes there will be some small errors come affter that, I have seen a lot of small errors originate from warranty in Z5 series group (vietnam)
My phone is under warranty but there's no service center in my area so unable to do that
In device manager(pc) shows somc flash driver connected to pc
z5 dual dont boot no fastboot or download mode no red light plz help me

Try holding power+up vol + down vol all at the same time. This will force the phone to boot. My Z5 premium randomly will either freeze where there is no response to any thing screen, buttons etc, or it will just power down and will not turn back on. that's when i know I have to hold those three buttons down and it will boot back up. I have noticed that sometimes all my paired bluetooth devices will need to be re-pair any since the paring for them gets wiped out. Not sure what determines whether they stick or get deleted.

Need Help with my J7 - Will no longer boot.

I have a Samsung Galaxy J7 and there is no ROM on it. It had TWRP installed and working, but today it stopped booting. If I push the power button
nothing happens like the battery is dead. I went ahead and bought a new OEM battery and put it into the phone. I plug in the charger and for a
few seconds, the black screen shows a battery in the middle with a lightning bolt. Then it goes back to black ... I let it charge overnight but when I
go to turn it on, it still does nothing. no matter how long I hold the power button, nothing happens. I tried power + home + Vol and still nothing.
Just a black screen and no LEDs light up. Nothing ... if I plug it back into power the battery icon shows again in the middle of the screen with a
lightning bolt, then goes back to black.
What could this mean ?? Is there anything I can try ? the phone was booting into twrp just fine until today.
Please help !!

I dont have that phone so cant suggest you any roms, just make sure its stock and latest. Also i doubt that its a battery issue as a brand new battery has some charge which should have turned on the phone when you tried.

Since you're new, have you tried pulling the battery, putting it back, then holding power, home, and volume down buttons simultaneously? It wasn't clear if that was the problem with using Odin or not.

Hi again -
first off Yes I have tried power-vol-home but again nothing happens. No screen. Just black. The ONLY TIME the screen comes on is if I put the charger into the phone..the screen ONLY comes on for 5 seconds displays the battery and shuts OFF. I have NO ROM / NO TWRP. . it is all gone. I had TWRP but if its there I cannot boot to it. No fast download / download / recovery nothing happens, only the battery ICON for 5 seconds. I have tried three batteries and none of them will help. It will NOT charge either.
Also Sandeepkumar - sorry I was not clear. There is NO OS. No Rom. So there is no way to turn on usb debugging. Please help ! If you have any other ideas, or you need any more info from me
Thanks again all !!
PS... Just so you all know, It was ALL working prior to this. It was rooted/TWRP/Custom ROM ... all fine. Then I deleted ROM/OS by mistake from TWRP, then this all happened

right, so now what we need to do is , connect your phone to computer while the device manager is opened on it. that way we can check if computer recognises the device in any mode. if it shows something in usb section then maybe we can look for a way to bring the phone in download mode or some other mode.

Okay, we must not check this pc for the device, open device manager using windows + X. Then selecting device manager from that black menu that pops up. Other than that .. IDK.
thanks anyway .

I hope you get the device working. Good luck and please share what happened.
FYI I charged the battery in a universal charger, now phone boots fine. Battery was just too low to take a charge from phone.
Thanks again

Bootloader exception for SM-G930F

Hello,
Yesterday, while my phone was in idle, it turned off and rebooted on the classic red writing on black screen error.
I realize that there are many bootloader exception topics, but I searched and the only one topic I found was on a polish android forum, which I had to translate and that could not help me.
That because the exceptions may be many but I found that error only once.
The error is:
Code:
Bootloader exception
[RST_STAT = 0x1000000]
Exception: do_handler_sync: DABT_EL1(esr: 0x96000010)
pc: 0x8f0221b4 lr:0x8f022170 sp:0x8f10fe60
Phone is stuck in that screen until the battery dies.
I tried to get into download mode (to flash a new bootloader) but every combination doesn't work, it just turn off the screen and then after 30 seconds - 1 minute it reappears.
I read online that may be a mobo issue.
Is there any way to recover the phone, put it in download mode or at least recover the data there's inside?
Thanks for the support
Also having same issue
Have you managed to find a solution to this? I am having the same issue, and this is the only thread I can find which matches what my phone is doing.
Same as you, I haven't recently done anything to modify the firmware, I woke up this morning to find the exception text, and when rebooting via the Home + Power + Volume Down combination it jumps me straight to the same exception screen with no boot logo.
Hopefully there's some information around that can resolve this, but unfortunately I currently can't find it

No, unfortunately my phone is still stuck on that exception red text (not a single green one like the one i found online).
I bought a cheap USB Jig, trying to force the phone in the download mode but it doesn't work, my guess is that since the phone doesn't actually turn off, it can't "jump-start" on that mode (with the Jig).
Online I found that people just kept pressing the Vol Down + Power + Home and "eventually" (after 100+ tries) the download mode happens, but I doubt that's in my case.
The only solution I could find that could help me in the future is that 1. Phone is dead, eMMC and motherboard cannot start. 2. Since the phone could be (difficultly) tore down, the best bet is that you find a data recovery center (not Samsung since as I found out they don't do data recovery, but they simply change everything giving you a new phone basically or they change the motherboard, so deleting everything) or a data recovery specialist so that you could disassemble the phone, remove the memory, and read the content on a chip reader.
In this case maybe there's a chance to recover the simple data you have (photo, video, music, documents and something else that has a recognizable header) but probably everything else is lost.
I would be more than happy to be proven wrong since I'm not an expert but it's been 2 weeks and I received no answers.

Morning.
The way out of this is to flash either the firmware that is on your phone or just the bootloader file (BL) from that firmware. Both options are done via Odin with your phone in download mode. So just to be clear, Download Mode is availble before the phone looks at the boot partition.
So, hold volumedown+home+power (press and hold the power button last in this sequence).
You may notice that your phone won't go into downlaod first time but it should not take more than 3/4 attempts. Do Not release the buttons until Downlaod Mode appears, no matter how many attempts it takes. Keep them pressed the whole time even when it's powering off and on, this is the part people do wrong.

Hello,
The idea was to flash something on my phone to restore it, but download mode isn't available for me

That's it.
But even if I keep the combination pressed the phone doesn't enter in download mode. Usually (and I've seen a good amount of videos) if you keep volume down + home + power pressed, the phone boots up, then goes into the bootloader exception, then it reboots, then it goes into the exception and so on until it gets to download mode. That's not my case. I tried to keep them pressed for 10-15 minutes while it was showing the error and there was no more than one "attempt" (it doesn't restart more than one time per combination).

The fact is that it doesn't power off and on multiple times, but just one time.

I'm this case you'll need to use ADB and side load to flash a new bootloader.

But how can I use ADB and sideload if 1. the device doesn't go in recovery mode and 2. it's not even recognized with "adb devices" maybe because of the fact that it doesn't go on recovery mode?

Ok forget that one for now.
Try the following.
Boot phone so the error appears.
Then just press and hold the Home button only until the Android robot appears on screen.
Now press volume down+home+power and it should after a few seconds reboot into downlaod mode, if it does just repeat the process from the start.

I'm guessing my phone is one of the older version. Pressing repeatedly the Home button or holding it should trigger the "forced upload by key pressing" with the android logo (as i've seen in videos and images), but mine doesn't.

OK, the only sensible conclusion is that your phone has suffered some sort of hardware failure, its isn't unheard of. It'll likely cost you more to diagnose and repair than to buy a new S7 since their really cheap now.
It may be worth just looking to get your data recovered, which will be cheaper.
I'm not a fan of changing the mother board it's messy and the phone will never look perfect.
What country are you in?

Italy.
I honestly don't care about the phone, it has not sentimental value or something. Since I read here, on reddit, youtube and online that there were method like keeping pressed the combination, pressing the home button repeatedly or holding, using a jig, and others maybe someone knew what could I do to restore it. The weird thing was that I wasn't flashing anything nor using the phone, so the hardware failure option may be plausible.
The recovery of data (and I tried when I wrote my last post to re-use adb, maybe i was missing something but the phone is "recognized" by the computer but not with "adb devices") is the only solution I can think of, and there's the chip-off method that could at least recover the major data (photos, videos, documents). If there's anything else I'm all ears.

Pressing the power button for even a minute doesn't trigger anything. I assume that you're talking about the upload mode activated by holding the home button or pressing it repeatedly, showing the android logo and having adb recognize the device to then flash something or recover something. That is not my case, it doesn't happen to me unfortunately.

Buy an usb jig they still work for galaxy s7. It might get you out and they are 3-5$ so you got nothing to lose

I have the exact same problem. This is the closest thing I could find on the internet I could find regarding diagnosing it. Had to make an account just to reply. I was thinking it was a OS problem for the longest time, but I suspect that it may be a hardware problem after all. My s7 did this to me the morning of Jan 9. Set it down and came back to it, reboot with bootloader error, red text only, no combinations of buttons work etc. I see that two others in the thread had theirs fail around the same time as well.
Just wanted to update, not sure if anyone is still reading this thread. I plugged my s7 onto my old laptop (windows 7). My laptop recognized it and installed 2 drivers. They are:
"SAMSUNG Mobile USB CDC Composite Device"
"SAMSUNG Mobile USB Modem #2"
I've plugged into this old laptop before and transferred files around, so it doesn't seem to make sense to me why it would install these drivers now. It still doesn't show up in "My computer" at all. I believe normally it shows up in "My computer" as an empty folder when charging although I don't recall 100%. Hopefully this might help with diagnosing this problem.

Probably it's because when it's in recovery mode, in download mode or this (bootloader) "error mode" it's recognized differently by the computer, to be recognized by ADB and Odin to flash roms and others. Instead when you plug it in when it's on, it's recognized to transfer data, and I believe when you swap MTP (for normal data transfer) and PTP (using the camera) you should also installing different drivers.
Anyway, I noticed too that the device is recognized differently than usual, and differently when rebooting it with the cable plugged in. (Also the name of the device is different when using the 300k tool, in fact my device is recognized as a "Modem")

I was wondering if you installed any apps recently and how full your internal memory was. I believe my phone was around 90% full of the 32GB, had no warning symbol about how full my memory was though. Friend was saying I should of got a warning if my memory was getting near capacity. I installed F-droid recently and used it to download Adaway app. Deleted F-droid and deleted Adaway since I couldn't get Adaway to work. Never rooted my phone. I was curious if you also did anything similar to what my phone did since we're in the same boat. Otherwise the only things we share in common is we set it down and it reboot with this bootloader error.

I will try to answer all the problems of XZ2 :)

Hello,
My wife's Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact with model number H8324 has an issue with booting or maybe the launcher getting stuck in a loop after getting to the lock screen for a split second.
The phone seems to boot like normal and gets to the lock screen, we are even able to punch in one or two digits of the 4 digit pass code. Then it goes into a loop of the notification bar and back button flickering. From then on the phone is not responding except for the power button which brings up the normal "Turn off, Reboot, and Lockdown" menu. The issue just started out of nowhere yesterday morning and we haven't been able to fix it yet. We haven't done any rooting or custom rom flashing, it's running the official Sony software but it's out of warranty.
Here's a video showing the issue. The video shows the whole boot process but the link takes you to the last part after the logos.
We would love to get some files off it so if there is a way anyone can help us with that we'd prefer it over a hard reset.
Things we've already tried
Turning the phone off and on again
Unlocking the phone in the split second the lock screen works, this is just too short to swipe up and then put in four digits.
Rebooting the phone
Booting while charging
Booting into safe mode (this has the same issue)
Connecting the phone with USB to a pc, the phone is recognized by Windows, but it doesn't share it's filesystem with Windows.
Connecting the ADB to it, alas usb debugging is not yet enabled on the phone
Trying to get into recovery mode, we haven't been able to get into the recovery menu. Googling seems to indicate it might be holding volume up + power button when the phone is off but then it doesn't seem to do anything at all.
We're currently trying to run out the battery of the phone to see if that will resolve the issue on it's own.
If anyone has any idea, we would love to hear it.

I think u just need to reinstall rom file with newflasher and stock rom , did u tried it ? with newflasher newest version , u still can keep the personal files and flash stock rom for the phone , then i think this phone will run normal again
If u dont know how to do that , reply comment here , but u should turn off the phone to keep battery well , if u can't turn off the phone , try to press and hold volume up button + power button within 5 sec , phone will vibrate 3 times and totally off
Is there a way to get a stock recovery if somehow the recovery has been deleted?
