Help with the Mate 9 Pro in the US - Huawei Mate 9 Questions & Answers

Returning to Android after 2 years, and I've been doing a bit of research. I keep getting drawn to the Mate 9 Pro (Kirin 960, 6 GB, 128GB). I have some concerns though.
Will it work on all of the T-Mobile Bands (It seems yes, but I'd like to be sure)?
Can I use Google Play Services since it's a Huawei phone not made for the US Market?
Can someone confirm the navigation buttons can be made to be on screen only, and disable the physical capacitive keys?
Will Wi-Fi calling for T-Mobile work on Mate 9 Pro?
Best place to buy one that is reputable?

3. I don't know.
4. No.

Buying in Europe?

Anybody seen the MediaPad X2 in Europe for sale yet? Or people having experience with online sellers ( where you do not end up with a sky high import tax at delivery? ). Thanks...

I ordered a GEM-703L from a UK seller today. More expensive than the GEM-701L that's been advertised on Amazon for months but I just didn't want to wait any longer.
Also I have my doubts whether the GEM-701L will be available in the 3G/32GB gold version.
And lastly ROM development for the GEM-703L will be ahead of the GEM-701L.

How are you liking the X2? THe 703-L is the Chinese version, I believe (Honor X2)? Or is it configured for the European market (Google Play installed, default language is not Mandarin, etc.?)
So far so good although I am still waiting for the unlock code from Huawei.
My X2 came with Google Play pre-installed and English language.
I did a factory reset and then I could choose whatever language I required. Google Play disappeared but can easily be installed through the Huawei app store app.

Thanks for the feedback. Couple of questions for you:
Does the back of the device say "Huawei" or "Honor"? I've seen different versions and I'm not sure what the difference is.
Also, was the phone not unlocked when you received it? It won't work with your local SIM without getting a code from Huawei?
Would it be possible for you to take some screenshots of the web browser in portrait and landscape mode, for us to get an idea of how different the screen real estate is compared to normal-sized phones? A screenshot of something like GMail or MS Word would be great too, if possible.
The back of the phone says Honor.
The phone is SIM unlocked. I meant the code for unlocking the bootloader.
I don't use the stock browser but Chrome.
There is a setting called Application Display effect where you can force apps to shrink. You can set this globally or per app.
For example if you enable this for Flipboard it will open in tablet mode.

Honor is just the name used for the Mediapad X2 in China. So if you have a version with Honor on the back, its the "Chinese" ( 03 ) version. From technical specs the only real difference between the 3 version is a differences in the LTE frequency support.

The code that people are requesting is the ability to access the bootloader so they can run custom roms on it. In simple terms Huawei sends you the ability to root the entire device so you can run anything you want on it. Unlike plenty of other phone's where you need to do tricks or use bugs to get complete access.

A quick way to compare is to look up the X1, where there are more examples out from. The X2 is technically just a X1 with a upgraded SOC. All the other components are the same. The upgrade fixes the only negative thing about the X1 ( the "slow(er)" and outdated A9 cores ).
For comparing to other phone's use this tool:
http://www.phonearena.com/phones/si...iaPad-X1,Sony-Xperia-Z-Ultra/phones/8427,7883
Try the "VIEW LAYERED" option at the bottom to compare screen sizes.
If you want i can post tomorrow or Friday a few pictures comparing the Sony Z Ultra vs the X2. My X2 is going to be delivered tomorrow and i still have my ZU for a few more days.

Thinking of buying one but.....

I am thinjing of buying a mate 8, but knew from a fan site in Egypt, that some of them found a problem of having some light /white pixels on the screen when it is off/black ?
Is that seriois and happen ? Does it have any remedy ?
hm to be honest this is the first case of stuck pixels ive read about and ive been on the mate 8 forums here on xda since the very beginning. so im guessing its just an isolated incident, no worries

Thank you very much.
Do you have info about the Oppo R7 Plus ? It is cheaper here than the mate 8, and on paper, the specs looks close really.
Thanks again
Don't know where you are located (Egypt?), but in Germany when you buy in a German online shop you can return the item within 14 days without any reason.
Dunno if it's EU-wide.
Additionally if you buy it in a retail shop, you could ask for starting the device before you buy it. Some shops do it, some not. Then you can check for your screen error.
But TBH: never heared about that problem before. Could be software related also...
I switched from a LG G3. The battery lifetime was the only reason. It was so annoying I had to charge the G3 each 4 or 5 hrs... I had wireless chargers everywhere...
With the Mate 8... wow! I come home from work with ~50-60% battery!
Even if you heared from some problems with the screen in Egypt, why no import device then?

Thank you for your replay. Yes am in Egypt, and importing is a bit complicated for inviduals. The well known shops will test the device for you ( after you pay, so it is then a warranty procedure).
I heard that the problem starts after sometime. It can be a software problem as you siad, some people said that found an app on playstore to fix this.
Well, if there's an app that fixes it, then it's a software issue.
Do you know which app it is? I'm very curious.
I just have my mate 8 for 6 days now and very happy. If you like the phone and if you are aware it's a bit bigger (and definately greater ) than your old phone, you will love it.
My LG had the power button on the back. The same spot where the fingerprint reader of the mate 8 is... hah!
If you didn't hold it in your hands yet, you definately should do it. Don't underestimate the size!

I guess the app name is Kill-Pixel.
I love 6 " mobiles, I used then in the last 3 yeras ( Samsung mega, Xperia T2 and LG G2 Pro ), but 2 months ago I bought the htc one e9+ because of its specs. It is reaaly nice but I can not handle the smaller display anymore, so I have to go back to the 6 "
Okay, just wanted to make sure you know how big 6" are.
i agree, i dont think i can go back to sub 6 inch displays after experiencing the mate 8 btw, stuck pixels are actually a hardware problem, which can sometimes be resolved by software, i.e. switching colors and forcing the stuck pixels to get unstuck same principle applies to laptops or desktop monitors.

I know that mate 8 does not have app drawer, and is similar in its UI to the iphone. I can not live with this UI, so my qestion is , has any body tried any launcher ( Nova for eaxmple) ? Are these laumchers work smoothly with the mate 8, or what ?
i can definitely recommend nova launcher. have been using it on my mate 8 since day 1, works without a hitch

If I'm not mistaken you still get colored square background to all apps which look horrible. Try simply google if your in to rooting/custom firmware.

Hello all! Quick questions for you :)

Hi all guys!
I am considering to get the Nokia 7 however I am still not 100% sure because of the non-localization it provides. I would appreciate if you could answer some of my questions to help me out decide:
1. Is the stock rom multilanguage? If not, is there a multilanguage rom to be flashed?
2. What about the band 20 (800mhz)? Did anyobody realize if it is a hardware limitation or only software (i see that in a few Xiaomi devices like the Mi 5c they managed to unlock it). Is anybody working on it?
3. What should one do to localize it in Europe? Installing Playstore, G services and gapps?
Basically, would you recommend it as a good buy in Europe? I really like it more than the Nokia 7+ because of its form factor.
Thanks to all of those who will help me out
Hi Andy, I bought it on LightintheBox, I did not know the phone, but I got it anyway because I liked it. Now I need China Rom to enable updates from HMD GLOBAL. They told me it's Global version, but it's really raw as an operating system. This Global version does not update. For now is not good for Europe without updates. I'm living in Italy so there is no band 20 (800mhz).
Hi Andy,
I brought mine from coolicool last month and
1. yes, it does come with a multilanguage rom... which cannot be stock because that is chinese+english only. upon startup the phone lapses into an endless "checking for updates" cycle but it can be circumvented (see above topic) after which it works normally.
2. B20 (800mhz) does not seem to be supported by the hardware. that said, the phone works flawlessy on both 3G and 4G (vodafone), handles wifi and data well, comes with google's basics installed and downdoads/updates apps via playstore as it should.
3. based on my (limited) experience, i do recommend it.
pros: well designed and built, runs smoothly, no bloatware, bargain for USD 250
cons: not exactly international (might not see the android 8 update already out for the chinese version), system takes up 17GB (!) of internal memory

Mate 20X/Install Update/Unbrick - Official FunkyHuawei Thread for Mate 20X

This is the official FunkyHuawei thread for the Mate 20X.
What FunkyHuawei Supports Currently:
1. Firmware Installation / Unbricking
FunkyHuawei supports the Mate 20X for unbricking and firmware installation, but support has not yet been made public. This will be updated when it is.
2. Rebranding
Rebranding is currently not possible on the Mate 20X, even with root or unlocked bootloader. If this changes in the future, it will be updated.
Those who need to install updates and so on are welcome to contact FunkyHuawei support for help while the release of support for this model is still private.
Any other questions, feel free to ask them here.
Can you unlock the bootloader so it can be rooted?
Also, is there any difference in hardware between the 6/128 China version and the 6/128 Global version?
I see people mention google support, but how can it be impossible to install google stuff on a rooted china model?
Thanks
Hi, would these apps work on this version of the phone?
- Gboard, Google Pay(I usually use it for contactless payment), UK banking apps(HSBC, Barclays, etc)

I dont believe there is any hardware difference just maybe 1 let band difference. Chinese model will get updates quicker as the main base is in China so there update that model first . Google pay etc worked fine on my Honor note 10 which came out in August, call it the smaller brother which has no global ROM .
I personally prefer Chinese model , can delete most Chinese apps fine , yes some will remain and some Chinese characters in certain parts but still prefer Chinese model

Huawei have become strict in unlocking so maybe not but Honor who is apart of Huawei did offer users of honour note 10 codes .
@duraaraa,
I haven't been around here much since back when we goofed around with the Mi Mix (recall I sent you one I got so you could work on it since you didn't have one). Anyways, really glad to see what you have done with FunkyHuawei and all - impressive you turned your hobby in to a business so congrats.
I am curious about buying the global from your site. I am very likely to pull the trigger for one of these soon, haven't had a Chinese phone since my Mi Mix and Mate 9 (sold the Mi Mix ultimately for being to rough around the edges in terms of software and the mid range camera but kept the Mate 9 and was pretty happy with it for a while with no real issues once setup properly). Can you give us a summary of the finer points you see as advantages to getting a global from FunkyHuawei verse just getting a Chinese version with Play store already installed?
P.S. Anyone looking for a great unlocked Note 9 with bunch of accessories and whatnot send me PM.

I think you might have mistaken me for someone else about the Mi Mix, but I did work on the Mi Mix 2. I've never actually seen a Mi Mix 1 in person
The Chinese version uses various Chinese services instead of Google Services, and some of those can't be changed. For example, for location services. For the default voice assistant. And so on.
I've heard that OK Google doesn't work on the Chinese version, while you can use it to unlock the phone on the international version, and so on.
I had thought that Chinese version wouldn't pass Safetynet, but I'm not sure. I've also heard that the Chinese version doesn't allow you to change the default launcher. The dual app feature supports whatsapp and facebook on the global version, but wechat and chinese apps on the Chinese version, and so on.
If you don't live in China, getting the global version will work out better for most people.

Certain google things can be installed on the Chinese model. But google is baked into the non-Chinese model. So things like OK Google (to wake up the phone), google assistant as default, Google used as location provider, and so on, will be available only on the international model.

As far as I know you can't unlock the bootloader or root these at present.
If 'Enable OEM Unlock' becomes select-able in developer options it would be possible.

Have not heard anything for the Mate 20 X. The Pro has the screen supplied by LG and BOE, and most of the green-color bleeding issues are from LG. The screen of Mate 20 X is supplied by Samsung.
Hi @duraaraa. I think I'm ok sticking with Chinese version. But was wondering, in the event I'd like to change it to L29, if progress has been made on rebranding. Do you think it will be possible in the coming months. Thanks!

Honor V30 / V30 Pro , Google installation capability?

I know that the Honor V30 / V30 Pro was launched and already have actual phone on display in shops in China.
I lived in USA for many years and now working in Shanghai.
Currently usinig the Honor V20 and loved it. Was planning to get the V30 Pro now, but uncertain about the capability of installing Google play store, framework and the other google apps etc.
I know that there are methods to install google and related apps onto the Huawei Mate 30 Series..... so, will the same installation methods work on the Honor V30 Pro also?
If that is the case, then I am getting the V30Pro for sure. I believe that once the phone is on sale, and more people gets their hands on the phone, the installation solution should come by in no time.
Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks.
