Night Mode Differences - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

I recently received a replacement pixel after breaking my screen through insurance. The replacement was a refurb and I set it up using the device transfer. The only issue I have with the replacement is the "Night Light" is too amber. There is a dramatic difference between Night Light on my old Pixel vs replacement Pixel. From what I can tell, Night Light relies on hardware.
Night Light uses a new hardware composer interface to do color transforms on the display hardware rather than using a GL Shader, which unfortunately means it requires driver support that is not present on Nexus devices.

With an hour or so of searching, I haven't found any other reports of this. Is it possible the replacement is defective? Has anyone else heard of this? Android is up to date.
See attachment for a picture of a side by side comparison between the two. Adaptive brightness is off and brightness level roughly the same for both. Both displays are much more amber than the picture shows, but it does show the difference between the two.

What is wrong? On the right side night mode isn't active. It's set to sunrise but it's not triggered.

It is activated. It's not obvious in the picture because the amber is more subtle on the phone on the right side.
To confirm that the night light on the right looks correct, I have compared with a coworker's Pixel XL.

There might be hardware involved but it is effected by software too. I changed mine to blue.

It involves modding your services.jar. I probably have a stock one you could flash if you are rooted. Or blue.
Or if you are familiar with editing jars I can show you where the editing takes place.

I know how to edit Jars, but I have not rooted this phone, and would prefer not to. I assume sudo is required? I actually don't want blue, but simply a less aggressive amber/orange.

I think root is required. You might try doing a factory reset or flashing a stock system image.

My phone is doing the same exact thing. They said they're sending me a replacement. This is the third replacement by the way. First was a camera unable to focus, then it was a microphone problem , now it's the screen .. I'm losing trust with this product

A phone replacement resolved this issue for me. Unfortunately it took two more replacements after this to get which had no other issues.

I just received my 4th replacement. This one has an orange screen and not as bright as my other 3 Pixels. I guess I need a 5th replacement. This is really making me really angry.

I had this issue with many replacements. My original was the only one to not have the deep orange look. But I had other issues with that device.
I got tired of sending for replacements so I just said forget it, I won't use night light.
I'm running O DP4 now and there is an intensity slider on the night light options which I've finally settled for. You can make it as intense as you want.

Thats suzks for you dude,,, let us know how it works out.. picture is way too big.
This is actually normal. Using a software such as Screen Filter and looking at a pure grey image will show the screen pattern pretty clearly. Very noticeable at lower brightness, not much of an issue otherwise.

nothing in particular. I first noticed while using Launcher 7, all the red tiles had a lot of striping. I'm talking about pure red #FF0000. The gray noise has always seemed minimal. I only noticed it while using MIUI or Gingerbread. I just hope they don't replace my screen with the S-LCD. the SAMOLED is still much better than the S-LCD

Although I cannot confirm this right away, I highly doubt replacing it for a S-LCD is as easy as plugging it in. Phones have to be cost effective, so the less time spent repairing them, the better. I don't think you'll have anything but a SAMOLED.
Well I just got it back.
And they didn't fix the issue
although they did replace my charge port and volume buttons.
So, not a complete loss

Different Screens in newer models?

So I RMA'd and Google sent me a new Nexus 5 from the new "311k" batch. My original Nexus 5 is a "launch" version of the "310k" batch...
I turn my phone on and I immediately see a yellow/brownish tint to the new one they sent me (311k). Now, is this something that's permanent or will it get better with more use of the phone? My original Nexus 5 has bright whites with no beige tint to them...
I took some pics with an S3, the differences in pictures seem minor...in person it's literally night and day. Especially when using an app like hangouts...I'm sure if I had a better camera it'd pick it up.

I am not. I searched google and it seems to be an issue some people are having...but like I said it's odd to me because it's such a drastic difference and you can notice it everywhere on the phone.
You can't even say the whites are "white"
That's really interesting. There is a way to find it what type of screen out has with a terminal command. It's in a screen thread here somewhere. It would be good to know exactly what screens both the phones have. I noticed when I got my phone it had a brownish, reddish tint and flashing a custom kernel gave me amazing colors.

I know kernels can change the colors but why would it be different if it were a software issue? I know the 311k didn't have to download an update as the 310k's did when you turn on the phone.

Well its only there to protect the screen during transit. Have you compared them without it on? It is possible it causes a slight tint to the screen?
As much as I know, yellow tint is normal with new screens. It goes away after some days of usage.
Firstly 311 just indicates 2013 month 11 (November) production date and 310 was month 10 - its not a build standard despite what many seem to be thinking. If something in production changes one day then you'll need the whole serial number to know if it's before or after a change.
My first was November production (311) and it came pre-loaded with Kit Kat - but it had a serious screen defect (colour banding and distortions) and was replaced by another November (311). I would say the second does have warmer whites but as it all works as designed I'm happy.

Same thing happened to me on my replacement. The first one seemed super white (along with some dead pixels) and the new one has a warmer (yellower) tone to it. At first I thought the same thing, is this a defect. And then I thought either way I like a warmer tone on a screen. The brighter one almost hurt my eyes actually.. Since I've been using the new screen for a while I think it may have brightened up some, but I don't have my defective N5 to compare it to. I guess my point is that I don't think it is defective. I think it is an improvement over the first one. Especially since I don't have any dead pixels and my vibrator motor is stronger too.
Just got mine 3 days ago and has the warmer looking screen. I do prefer the cooler screens like my N4 had but will live with it since there are no dead pixels or other issues people have reported.

http://www.phonearena.com/news/Here...odels-have-slightly-different-screens_id44252
Wanted to update this thread...
So I got a replacement for the 2nd phone which had a yellow hue...but then when I got the 3rd phone and compared the screens, the yellow hue on the 2nd phone had gone away and the 3rd had the yellow hue.
So in my conclusion, it takes a few days - a week for the screen to break in.

[Q] Capacitive Buttons Brightness

Does anyone know if there is a way to adjust the brightness ? Mine seems very dark currently and I'm on Slimcat Official Build 7
I've tried the "Capacitive Buttons" apk and it's no help.....
Not at the moment.
The lighting is exactly the same on my OPPO Find 7A which shares a lot of the same hardware as the OPO. I think it's a hardware issue otherwise we would have seen a fix for it by now.

Bummer this is my only gripe so far with this phone.
Please don't take this the wrong way but does it matter if they are not bright as they never change or move so you know where they are and what they do. I think it looks good the way it is because the front of the phone is very minimalistic except for the silver frame but that is uninformed around the hole screen. I thought the idea for the dim keys was to give a more stealth look to the phone, hence no branding in the front glass.

Hope it's a software issue because if it's hardware this won't be the only phone out there

Yeah, I kind of wish they were brighter too.
A little brighter would be nice. Fortunately, I pretty much know where they are now without looking. I still miss the mark though once in a while. I am just thrilled they put the back button on the right, where it belongs, so I am not going to complain.

Reddish Hue Screen Color Normal ? Return this device ?

Hi Guys,
Need some advice. Just picked up a galaxy s8 plus for my personal device. I had one already for work. Noticed the work device has a much cooler screen and looks more white to me. Noticed the S8 plus i picked up for my personal has a redder hue to it. I tweaked the different modes in display but the personal device just cant get as cool or white as the work device I have. The work device (Left) is the US Snapdragon model and the personal ( right) is the international exynos model. Is this hue worth returning over or is this variation in screens normal. Looked at a Note 8 i have and it resembles the work device and is cooler and whiter as well. Any ways i can get the whites the same on my personal device ? Coincidentally the device on the right was manufactured 4/27/2017 while the device on the left was made 3/23/2017. I have also tried the display tweaks and the *#15987# trick.

Return it. That's how my first looked, and no matter how I adjust the tone, it couldn't get white. My replacement is normal. I almost kept the first thinking it's normal per the number of reports I've seen about it, but I'm so glad I exchanged it.
Thanks for the feedback

I own a small repair shop and actually had a client with this issue last week. Unfortunately for her, the phone was bought from eBay and it didn't had any warranty, so she couldn't ask for a replacement, thus coming to my shop. I kept looking for a solution all day long, but she eventually sold it.

Hopefully they remedy eventually. Was reading and some Note 8's even have the same issue. Guess you have to get used to it.
I would stick with basic. It is what everything but HDR content is supposed to be viewed in.
That yellowish tint is totally normal and how it should be. The phone you have pictured on the left has way too cool of an image.

I was recording a video the other day and got a notification at the same time and the screen flickered a bunch of lines/bars of static a few times. It hasn't happened since and it wasn't recorded in the video. I didn't have to reset or anything. Very weird.

so far so good.
I stopped having issues when I disabled my always on display on lockscreen. Back then when it was still enabled the phone will be stuck on black screen and had to restart it always. Just a drawback for now since I've been used to seeing my notifs always.
I had this. My screen eventually completely failed and got it fixed at one of Asurion's centers (UbreakIfix) locally. Had it back same day.
It seemed to be working ok, but the line has been popping up occasionally, and the phone hard locked last night. It rebooted ok, but I expect it will fail again soon.
It'd be great if some journo started rattling Google's cage about this.

Yes, it would be great if they could address this bug. It has been present for a couple of months and they have not addressed it yet.
I had an issue similar to the pictures posted here yesterday and about 2 hours later half my screen went black. I rebooted and it would intermittently go black the rest of the day. Its been good all day today but I kept it out of my pockets entirely to prevent pressure on the AMOLED. I have also ordered the ifixit kit to replace the screen which should be here Wednesday. This Pixel 7 pro has been the most fragile smartphone I've owned. Disappointed in that
