Totally Screwed up my Honor 8 - Honor 8 Questions & Answers

Howdy folks! In need of some urgent help... I'm also not terribly familiar with android as I came from years of using iphones.... Yesterday I did the OTA update to EMUI 5. Everything was fine except bluetooth would fail to turn on...so I tried doing a factory reset in the settings. The reset failed less than 10% in and when the phone rebooted, it seems like only half the OS reset and is totally screwed up (no access to the soft keyboard anymore, etc.).
Reading on how to either rollback to EMUI 4/Marshmallow, I tried using the Huawei Update Extractor after downloading L04 6.0 firmware from the Huawei site ( Honor 8_Firmware_FRD-L04_Android 6.0_EMUI 4.1_C567B122_United States_Nonspecific ).
After issuing the adb command to flash the first file, boot.img, I get a "FAILED (remote: Command not allowed).
I'm a total loss at this point. I'd be extremely grateful if anyone can point me in the right direction in terms of what to do next!

I was in the same position as you. Here is what I did:
Download both the rollback package and the full marshmallow firmware (I used a german one since that is my region, i linked one for the UK version, google your specific model to find them) from the hihonor community website: https://community.hihonor.com/docs/DOC-1752 and read the PDFs that are included in both zips, they contain the instructions to roll back to Marshmallow.
You will need an external SD card and you will lose your data.
In case the steps are not clear enough:
1. Copy the dload folder of the rollback package to the root of the SD.
2. Force update the phone (hold volume up and down at the same time when powering up).
3. Shut down the phone after the force update is done.
4. Delete dload folder of the rollback package and replace it with the dload folder of the full marshmallow firmware.
5. Force update the phone again.

First of all, confirm that your model is the L04 model.
The rollback procedure to MM is the following:
- Download the B300 from here http://www.hihonor.com/us/support/details?DOC_ID=92098
- Put the 'Update.APP' (~80MB) file in a folder called 'dload' in your external storage
- Turn off your phone then maintain all the buttons (Volume+, Volume-, Power) to turn it on.
After the update finishes, check your build number, you should be on B300.
- Now, delete the 'Update.APP' that's in your 'dload' folder
- copy the 'Update.APP' (~3 GB or so) of the B122 http://www.hihonor.com/us/support/details?DOC_ID=89264
- Turn off your phone then maintain all the buttons (Volume+, Volume-, Power) to turn it on.
Let your phone optimize, reformat its partitions.
You should now have MM on B122, you can then update to B162 through OTA.

Thanks for your replies. I sincerely appreciate it. I tried doing the above and when updating the rollback, it would only read to 5% and when phone rebooted it was in the same state it was before attempting the rollback. Could it be something to do with the SD card? Any other ideas? Thanks again.

Alright now let's try another method to save it.
- Turn off the phone
- Keep holding the volume+ button then plug it to a computer.
- Keep holding the volume+ until you see the honor logo.
- You should now see the eRecovery.
- Choose download latest software and recovery.
This is a video of these steps:

Assuming you have successfully flashed the rollback update (B300), I successfully rolled back to B162 by making a "dload" folder on my external SD card, and placing the Update.APP file in there, and then accessing recovery using the pwr+vol (+/-) buttons.. For some reason placing the Update.APP file in the internal storage did not work with the stock recovery, even though the instructions for the rollback ask you to do so. Hopefully this helps.

Not sure exactly why it worked, but I finally got it restored and am running the latest EMUI 5. Thank you so much everyone for your contributions. I owe you folks a beer!

I'm in the same situation you were in, command not allowed, rollback not working, dload folder with update.app in sd card not working.
How and what did you do after that ?
Thanks in advance

Place the dload folder/files on the root of the internal memory.

Go look on ModaCo.
There is a guy called Paul O'Brien who I think has some thing to do with Honor in some way.
He will help you sort your phone

I somehow managed to actually rollback my phone ! I'm starting to feel a lot better.
Bootloader's locked again, though (no more "this device has been unlocked and cannot be trusted")
Only small problem now is I have the "this device was reset" message problem still around.
Read online here on xda that I need to wait 72 hours before logging on again with my new password (I did change it, that must be why)
I'll just wait these 72 hours and see if it works.
Else if you did have this issue too i'd love to hear about it.

Yeah, if there were custom roms it would have been cake.
I'm trying the following right now:
1. Downloading random Honor 4c updates
2. Uploading the update.app file in SD Card root in folded "dload"
3. Fully turning off the device
4. Starting the device by pressing Volume Up + Volume Down + Power buttons
5. When you start it like this, it starts to install the firmware
Unfortunately, so far all installs have failed after the first few seconds of update, but I'm still trying. Maybe this is the way to unbrick?
man thats good i donno that metord how to do that step 2 plese expalin

Done, unbricked it.
1. I've first deleted everything from TWRP. Wiped all, including the installed rom.
2. I've went to reboot from TWRP, and it warned me that I have no rom installed and if I want to install root. Declined root install.
3. I've downloaded my original stock 5.1 rom from Huawei consumer site (I can't paste the URL, as I don't have enough posts on the forum)
4. Extracted the ZIP file and inside there is a "dload" folder.
5. Copied the folder and pasted it inside my SD card (It should be in the primary (root) folder).
4. Completely turned of my device and booter with Volume Up + Volume Down + Power button.
5. It started to install the rom and went to 100%.
6. The rom install failed, but after reboot, I waited a few minutes and the phone loader inside Android.
In the future, I should start making TWRP backups of the last working rom before trying to update further
Let me know if this works for you.
Cheers!
happy for you man :highfive:

Honor 8 Bootlooping

Hello! Yesterday I got my honor 8 from Newegg and got it all set up with my apps from the google play store. It worked great for that night, and this morning.
Just a little bit ago after getting home, I pull it out of my pocket and I realized it was on the start up screen. I wait, and it turns itself off and starts back up again. Endlessly. Oh no. So of course I do the logical thing and try to wipe the cache before doing a full wipe. Successful, but no change. So I go to do a factory reset, I then get a message that it had failed, because my data is corrupted. I'm not rooted, my bootloader is still locked. What can I do?
Update: I got it to the setup screen after rebooting and attempting to factory reset a couple more times. Will update if I have any more trouble.
EDIT: Update 2: It seems that when I touch the fingerprint sensor when that screen is off, it reboots and tells me my data is corrupt and makes me do a factory reset. The only reason I can think of for this is that I did an ota emui update last night... but why would it only have theses issues tonight? Any ideas or fixes would be appreciated.
Try downloading the B162 full update and installing that from SD? http://update.hicloud.com:8180/TDS/data/files/p3/s15/G1201/g88/v66280/f1/full/update.zip If you haven't otherwise unlocked the phone or flashed anything I'd guess you got a defective unit. I haven't heard of anyone getting a bootloop just from installing an OTA. Bad NAND in the phone maybe?
use dload 3 with buttons to update .
Alrighty, just downloaded and installed the update. Seems to be stable. I'll test it out today and see if it has any more trouble.
For future reference for anyone that might have this same issue, here's what I did:
1) Download the .zip update.
2) Create a folder named "dload" on your SD card.
3) Extract the contents of the .zip to that folder.
4) Power off the phone.
5) Hold down both volume up and down, as well as power until the boot splash appears.
6) Wait for it to do it's thing!
Thanks for the help, guys.

Most Welcome , happy i helped

Help please nxt-l29

So i bricked my phone. Long story short, using DC Phoenix and dicking around for several hours i was able to install the original FW. I am currently on B133 EMUI 4 Anroid 6.
Interestingly enough System update does not see any new updates. I've also tried Firmware Finder DNS route and I still couldn't find an update. I've then downloaded the next incremental upgrade from firmware finder which is B192. I placed the Update.app in the dload folder on my SD card and tried to appy the upgrade using the Project Menu upgrade and i keep getting an error message PT Failed! I've also tried the system update via the Vol+ Vol- Power button and it keeps giving me an error message. What can I do next? Why are these things failing?
I got it fixed....Moderator can delete this thread
Depending on the region you are in, you might have to wait up to a few weeks for the Huawei servers to recognise your phone. Then you will see updates.
You can also try factory reset. Sometimes that does the trick

factory reset

Hello everyone,
I just installed lineage os on my huawei p20. But i like to return to emui8.1. Where can i download the original firmwares?
Greets
I would suggest "Firmware Finder" by TeamMT.
Google it, there is a PC Version and a mobile one for Android. Make sure to EXACTLY enter your device type ( in my case EML-L29C432) If you dont know your model take a look at the phone box.
You need to download three files. If you still have TWRP you can use HuRupdater. Place the three files in a folder together with the hurupdater.zip, then flash the hurupdater zip. I may seem stuck but it just takes a few minutes so be patient and do NOT REBOOT MANUALLY DURING INSTALLATION (=Brick)

If I upgrade to EMUI 9.0 and don’t like it. Can I not just do a simple factory reset on the p20 to revert back to EMUI 8.1. My phone is EM L09.

Yes, you can use eRecovery.
No Root or Flashing Stuff needed.
1. Power Off your Phone
2. Press the Powerbutton shortly and wait till you see the Huawei Logo.
3. As soon as you can see the huawei logo press and hold the volume up button. This will take you to erecovery.
You will see a Screen with different options
4. Touch the "Download latest Version and Recovery" Button at the bottom of the screen. Your Phone will activate Wifi.
5. Choose your Wifi Network and enter your Wifi Key.
6. When the phone is successfully connected it will search for the latest official firmware. Follow the instructions

Thanks sackgnom. I will try this but I am worried that if Huawei makes emui 9 as the official firmware from this point on then doing the above steps will not allow me to reset to 8.1. I will keep it posted.

HOW TO MANUALLY UPDATE YOUR FIRMWARE (after boot unlock)

I'm surprised no one has given a proper thread for this, but then again, it may be because it's relatively simple to do.
Hit the LIKE (UP) button if this helped!
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
For starters: you do everything here on your on accord, and if anything happens to your phone, you accept the responsibility.
If your phone is not bootloader unlocked/rooted/etc, it should automatically receive updates when you check in your system settings.
NOTE: Doing this firmware update may break your root or cause rooted functions to misbehave. VERIFY THIS YOURSELF.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Steps (if your phone is boot loader unlocked):
1) Download the appropriate firmware from Asus' own website: https://www.asus.com/Phone/ROG-Phone/HelpDesk_BIOS/
- Determine if your phone is the WW (global) version, or the CN version.
- File is approximately 2 gb
- Put the file on your phone's ROOT folder (Internal memory, and not in any folder so the phone can detect it)
2) Once it is properly downloaded and placed, you should see the file there in .ZIP format. You can verify with using any file browsing app.
3) Make sure that your phone is charged fully and ready to update (backup your documents/pics/messages/etc.)
4) Restart your phone by holding the power button and select (RESTART)
5) Once your phone reboots, you should see a notification automatically pop up indicating that there is a firmware update available. Click on it and accept the update. Phone will now update and do the rest, do not shut down or do anything else with the phone besides perhaps leaving it charged.
- Takes about 10 minutes to update
- Once it reboots it will sort out your apps
6) FINISHED. :good:
I tried this and it failed to update. I did a factory reset to no avail. Please advise.
Ahhh thank you! I wasn't able to sideload upgrade from O to P... this method got me to P
