Verizon -> Telus...MMS Doesn't Work? - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My aunt just moved back to Canada, and brought her Verizon S6 with her. It was deactivated from Verizon, and activated with Telus. It does not seem to be able to send or receive pictures via text.
Can I flash Telus firmware onto the phone to fix this problem? If yes, is the process as simple as downloading Odin, and the flashing latest Telus firmware?
Thanks in advance.

So, I tried messing with the APN settings this morning, but they were essentially correct. Nothing changed.
I just tried flashing the Telus software, but it fails. I assume because the phone is a 920V, and not a 920W8.
Does anyone have any suggestions to get the MMS working?

I know you've said you have checked MMS and APN settings, can you show a screen shot of your settings or have a look at this and compare:
https://apn-canada.gishan.net/settings/988_3_telus_mobility_apn_settings_for_samsung_galaxy_s6.php
And yes you have a different variant for that firmware so your assumption is correct

Fixed. Thank you.
The very last line, "APN type" was simply entered as "default" as opposed to "default, mms."
Cheers!

Latest VZW OTA/Firmware update 4.4.3 removes 'New APN' setting.

I noticed that under Network settings for Global or GSM, the New APN feature to manually add an APN for different sim is gone. Looks like it's an auto detect feature now. I travel overseas for business alot and use pre-paid SIM cards. Not all prepaid sim cards have the data APN coded. I just found out on my trip here to Taiwan and couldn't get data on my phone because the option for adding the APN is no longer available. I tried multiple settings, different ROM's and no good. Only when I downgraded my firmware did the option come back. Glad I'm rooted, it sux, but had to downgrade and reflash back to the old 4.4.2 firmware/rUU and run custom ROM. Until this is addressed by verizon, there will be no way to manually add an APN.

Update: Figured the APN issue thing out
Thanks to member DOTTAT for giving me the direction I needed to get the APN assignment issue resolved. I just needed to do things differently for getting the APN to load up. Basically had to to to the 'Network Preferences' section to add the network my SIM cards are registered on. This is a long list to scroll through. After I selected the network, there is multiple options to add the network type (GSM,UMTS,LTE, etc.) Had to enable three different versions then reboot the phone. After, there were two APN's that automatically populated and I was able to edit. Thanks again to DOTTAT for the direction.:good:

I apologize but I did not see the steps to get the apn settings access. I've got the HTC One M7 for Verizon on 4.4.3 and can not change apn settings. What would the steps be? Thank you so much for any and all help.

I figured I'd bump this thread rather than start a new one... It seems I and many other Verizon M8 users have encountered the same problem:
I get no list of network APNs under "Network Preferences." There are zero entries, even though a message pops up to say the list is full.
I tried manually entering the MCC/MNC numbers for my carrier abroad (Claro Brazil) but this doesn't resolve the problem. I am stuck with only voice but no mobile data service.
Has anyone found a solution to this? Verizon tech support of course insists "just pop in the SIM and it should work automatically" as does the Brazilian carrier.
Does anybody know where in the phone the APN settings are stored, to edit them manually?

New AT&T unlocked g flex 2 on tmobile. Data not functioning!

I jumped on the $250 eBay deal for this phone. Today, after installing my tmobile SIM card I can talk and text fine but the mobile data is not functioning. I've gone into the "Data Manager" menu and turned on the "mobile data"...airplane function is off....performed a factory reboot, and still nothing. What am I missing? Do I need to do an APN configuration? Being an unlocked phone, I thought it was a matter of plug and play. Data works fine in my moto g. Please help. Thanks

Yes, get your apn settings from Tmobile and enter inSettings, Networks, mobile networks, access point names. Create a new APN for t-mobile...save....choose the new apn. .... see if it works
Yes, sounds like you'd have to enter APN values, especially if voice and text are working. Not all phones auto populate APN values.
Not sure if these APN values are correct but it's a starting point: http://apn-settings.com/t-mobile-apn-settings-step-by-step-configuration/ . This is T-mobile's site for generic data settings for non T-Mobile phones: https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-2090
You guys were spot on...contacted tmobile and they had me up and running in less than 5 min with the proper APN config. Thanks for the help fellas.
Now if I could just get the latest software update without having to purchase the gophone SIM/plan...

Sorry to revive such an old post, but I am thinking of doing the same thing right now ($200 for a new unlocked AT&T Flex2), and wondered if your WIFI Hotspot function on the phone works with TMobile?
I've tried other AT&T unlocked phones on TM, and when I turn on the hotspot feature, I get a network error.
Thanks.
ps. Can you post the APN settings that TM gave you?

How to get Hotspot and APN settings without root or mods

I bought a sprint N920P for use in Canada. It was sold unlocked but I discovered I couldn't turn on Hotspot or change the APN. After doing some research, I found that flashing the XAS firmware I can enable the hidden settings. I can still receive OTA and Knox is not tripped. The device is unrooted. Samsung Pay is functional. Link to firmware is here. It will wipe everything so backup first!

To get hotspot settings, download Samsung good lock. This will unlock the hidden hotspot settings. You can find good lock in the galaxy apps store and the hotspot toggle in the good lock pull down menu. Long press the hotspot toggle to access hohot settings.
To make sure the new firmware works, check if the firmware wiped your phone. If the phone boots up in the factory reset state, then you're good. If it doesn't try again.
I wouldn't say this is a for sure way. True test after you flash this firmware is to have Sprint Service. Whatever firnware you have, once you pop another SIM into the Sprint Note, 5 the APNS become editable. I popped in a T Mobile SIM and I was able to edit the T Mobile APN.

Do devices connect tho? I have the same unlocked SM-N920P on a Canadian carrier, but when I try to connect a device to the hotspot, it doesn't work.

I flashed the firmware that you included in the link, and I after installing I still cant find the hotspot option in the settings menu. Do you mind going a little further in depth in how you activated the hotspot?

As I suspected this does not work. He is able to edit the APN because he is on another carrier and not Sprint. Flashing firmware doesn't do anything.
He said he wiped the phone to factory state after he flsshed the firmware. Did you do that?

I'm not using sprint either, I have a sprint note 5 but running on Fido network in Canada. I'm hesitant to wipe my phone as the method may not even work. Maybe if OP responds, he can explain how he is able to enable hotspot.
I can access APN settings fine, but the hotspot function is non-existent in settings.

There is another thread he posted in - he just said that he did a factory reset. Did you do that? Anyone can access APN but not be able to edit the hotspot settings. I could do that on a stock Sprint Note 5. Sprint just greys out certain parts.

So after downloading Good Lock from the Samsung store hotspot menu seems to popup, but I'm having trouble actually having devices connect to my note 5. The wifi connection is seen, but the farthest I can go is "obtaining Ip address". Does anyone know how to solve this?

You have to install samsung good lock. It's available in the galaxy apps store. Read my OP for more info.
Try on different devices. Does computer work? Does its work? If they all don't work check your mobile data settings, apn settings and Hotspot settings.
So far this is not working for anyone one than the OP. I am considering this a non fix. If someone who has a Sprint phone is able to use Sprint service AND can edit APN that is a fix. Taking a Sprint phone and popping in a SIM from another carrier and being able to edit APN is not a fix but pretty common. Again I took a T Mobile SIM and popped into my Sprint phone and voila I am able to edit T Mobile's APN - because apparently T Mobile does not block access to edit APNs but Sprint DOES. I'm glad this worked for you Justinxfan - here's hoping for a true fix for the rest of us!
hey,
I want to buy a Sprint Note5 from ebay.
I'm going to use it on koodo in Canada
If I dont have access to apn settings does that mean I cannot use data on it?

If you reboot the phone, upon boot, immediately go into enable hotspot, it will work until you reboot again. I've done this on several road trips with the kids and the unlimited plan comes in handy with three streaming youtube or netflix.

Stock Rom (rooted) APN settings unable to be edited or added

Hi guys,
I've been running the stock rom (6.0.1) with RingPlus for about 4 months now, and just got word that they were discontinuing service. I canceled my service with them and have moved to Tello, which many of the users on RingPlus were saying was a painless switch. I've received my Tello phone number, and activation/provisioning instructions, which I've followed several times. I'm able to make and receive phone calls, but don't have 3g or LTE data.
From my experiences with Nexus devices and AT&T MVNO's my gut says it's an APN setting, but when I browse to the APN list the whole list is grayed out and unchecked, the add button is also grayed out.
Does anyone know how to open this up?
This issue is solved. I used a hidden menu (##3282#) to view my APN settings and they were being pulled from Tello. Later in the day my phone randomly did a prl update (several dozen had been done since posting this thread) and after that update everything worked. My best guess is that the line wasn't fully activated.
Hi Thunderbolt,
My phone is rooted and after putting in the MSL and dig down I have the same issue as APN Type and many other options are greyed out. I'm with Sprint. Looks like you haven't done anything and it automatically became available. What's Tello? Do I need to install any otger app to get the access? Thanks.
I'm on Stock TouchWiz Marshmallow on my S5 Sport G860P and my APN settings aren't greyed out, but they don't save when I add the proper APN for my FreedomPop SIM I received yesterday.
Is there a way to unlock this phone for free? I bought it on Ebay used and it has a clean ESN. I'm not the original owner so I don't have to Sprint account number and I may not be able to get it because it was purchased from a reseller.

What does it mean to use a hidden menu? And what is Tello? I am having this problem as well and would love to fix it. My issue is ultimately about not sending and receiving MMS consistently. But having the prn menu grayed out isn't helping my efforts to fix it.
Thanks!

Open dialer Punch in ##3282# this brings up the hidden menu for a lot of things.. Choose edit, and if it ask for you MSL enter it, then go to apn settings and you can add one, it should not be greyed out.

Locked APN

Is there anyway to make the APN editable without rooting as I use a couple of banking apps that I can't do without ?
It was possible with my OnePlus 5 with Android 9.
What happens when you try to add an APN?
Give this thread from last year a look (another model, naturally, but, it may apply).

I slightly altered my T-Mobile APN for a 2nd APN (changed the APN Protocol & APN Roaming Protocol to IPv4/IPv6).
Ran a speed test & it works. Perhaps it's not enough of a change to the original APN, but, I was able to select it.
I did find that once it's saved, to select another APN, you have to tap directly on the corresponding dot for the selected APN to change. If you just tap on it w/o tapping the dot, it won't select & just stay on whatever you're currently using.

Do you have a carrier-locked version?
If so, I'm guessing that may be the issue, even though mine is a T-Mobile US carrier locked version. (still SIM Locked) & I can get a 2nd APN to select.
I don't have another carrier SIM Card to see if I'd have the same issue as you. Perhaps someone else will be able to help w/a 2nd SIM/APN.
No it's an unlocked OnePlus 8 bought from Amazon.
I believe though that carriers are requesting locked APNs or pushing them to the phone and is a problem since Android 10.
Another sim I tried from a different carrier is also locked.
Anyway your suggestions are appreciated.

Yeah, troubleshooting is difficult when neither the mfg or carrier(s) want to take ownership of the issue.
Since the phone is SIM Unlocked, I'd start with the carrier & see if they have to whitelist your device (by IMEI) or whatever means they require for BYOD. I'd grab the SIM Card serial number as well before you give 'em a call.
