I am new to rooting and flashing custom ROMS. I have an AT&T Galaxy S6 and I want to know what's the cleanest and most stable way I can root this device and install a custom ROM? I have been having issues since I received an over the air update from AT&T, and even when I reboot my phone to factory settings that update still gets pushed through. So my choice now is get a new phone or try a custom ROM and see if that helps.

In the S6 General section. I believe this is probably your best bet in terms of ROM's, slap Hacker Kernel on the side and enjoy many battery benefits too!

Due respect, aren't we here to help?
Instead of saying it that way, why don't you guide him through, everyone needed help at the beginning, and you are not an exception.
I have been using the ROM someone linked above (xtrestolite 3.3.1) since I got the phone used several months ago. It's been nearly flawless, almost no lag at all, battery life much better than stock. I tried a couple other roms and had issues almost immediately so I went back to this. I'm sticking with it until after custom roms based on the nougat update come out, so several more months likely.
You can use alexis rom it's very good.with pretty handy feature s like clock position in status bar, network speed indicator, touchwiz launcher gestures etc..

Indeed, you're right in every word you said but to be honest, I was going to message him to help him but something disturbed me and I forgot about the whole case. Apparently, everyday users post something like that, asking for the "best ROM and kernel", I just got tired seeing those posts, in fact, it's the first time I reply to this kind of post. With all my respect, thanks for clarifying your point and opinion.

Hello all,
Just got the Skyrocket about a month ago, it's rooted, but just got into the idea of installing anew ROM/Kernel and decided to try out UnNamed, then possibly install Faux123's Kernel.
I booted to CWM (5.0.2.6), backed up, wiped, wiped cache and tried to install from zip, but the install fails with Status 1. I have searched everywhere, but couldn't find anything about it. I am currently restoring the NANDroid backup I made prior to attempting to flash so I can use my phone.
Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated as I am brand new to the Android scene.

This ROM is for the I777, correct? Why would you put it on a I727? It would be nice if a version would come out for the I727.

No need to be rude. I made a simple mistake. At least I had the common sense to back up first so it's not like I'm in a bad situation.
Well, back to researching other ROMs then.

Before I discovered XDA I started on Google and a lot of results came up for UnNamed and the Skyrocket like someone tagged the site/post/whatever incorrectly. As far as the research goes I want to look at what the different ROMs have to offer, any complaints or issues users are experiencing with them, etc. to make a decision as to which one I would like to install. Same thing with Kernels.

i am new to the one s but not to flashing. i am coming from a galaxy s sprint epic. while i was on that, cm10.1 & 10.2 were great advancements to the stock gb which always seems to take forever for updates. but with this huge leap in smartphone power, do i really need to root & flash? even with all the bloatware that i don't use, the phone is very fast. and i can get two days easily from my battery (which i charge every night so that's not an issue). i used to flash just to have the latest but i think i just want functionality. also, i don't put that much on my phone so 16g should be plenty, even with all the bloatware. not that i wouldn't flash to get better use out of my device but i just don't think i need to. please convince my otherwise.
Root just to try new roms or mods that improve your experience. Otherwise no need

The stock experience is great IMO. Only point in rooting is to remove bloatware

Once youve been rooted, you cant be without root, regardless of ROM.
There are plenty of benefits in rooting even on stock roms.
Infact, a non-rooted device is like a windows PC with only access to your desktop...

explain why?
why?
i guess i wasn't clear. i know the benefits of root. i've been flashing roms on my last 3 devices. the answers i was trying get were more along the lines of what are the main changes people are making to their stock phones. does all the bloatware inhibit speed or limit space? are there roms or tweeks that people can't live without? or do people unlock, root and flash just because they like to mess with their phones/have the latest even if it doesn't work correctly?

No, it is in General--It's all good--
When I get my Note 2/3 I will probably only root for Nandroids and Titanium BackUp. I think that phone and maybe SGSIV may stand on their own without a need to flash roms. Might be wrong though-- There are still more sweets after Jelly Beans--
Your last question answered your own question. Today's smartphones don't really require root, UNLESS you like tweaking your phone.....which most of us love to do, otherwise we wouldn't be here. You can easily get rid of bloatware with a new launcher. IE: Nova or Apex are my favorites. Just disable and hide them, you'll never see them again. Back in the day people rooted mainly to get the latest OS quicker....these days the newer smartphones already come with the latest OS, so it's all a matter of whether you like tweaking your phone or not. There are still great benefits to rooting, but these days it's more personal preference over flashing the latest OS.
Just my 2 cents.

I can explain it in one word: Control.
I want to be in charge of the device, not letting the device be in charge of me. If you want that you might as well go with apple, who makes good devices with a terrible OS, imo.
Well I will root my htc one s because the latest update to 4.1 is crap. My battery drains so fast. So if I don't find a solution for this I might downgrade back to ics 4.04 or maybe a better custom rom...otherwise I would've kept the rom not rooted. Especialy because now we can disable an app that it is not usefull.

Can't comment on stock but Blackout rom has been good for me.
I root because you can never seem to turn the screen brightness down far enough without root access, that and I don't like being locked out of a file system by manufacturers who don't trust my common sense.
I flash only when a device is older and/or no longer getting updated and something like CM gives me a major improvement.
Even if you want to run a stock ROM, unlocking/rooting (and flashing a custom recovery) enables you to make and restore nandroid backups and use tools like Titanium. It's also makes it easier to repair if you ever run into trouble like boot loops.

lol, days my butt. you'd be lucky to use a partial day flashing Roms with multiwindows, maybe just a few hours total.
Well you just download a bunch, stick them on sd/otg flash, boot, flash , boot. You don't need to reconfigure the OS every time just to see if it has multiwindow
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
@Andypandiiee I'd highly recommend looking at the OPs and see which has multiwindow. Part of being on XDA is reading and discovering for yourself. I don't think this is a best ROM/Kernel thread so I don't see any problem with it. But there are plenty of ROMs, and people do use a multitude of them.
Yes, as mentioned...ROM opening posts almost always list the features, or links to a site that does.
If you don't want to read the opening posts and look for multi window listed....perhaps flashing ROMs isn't for you? Reading and reading and reading some more is what XDA is all about. Especially the opening posts of ANYTHING you are thinking if flashing. ?
Edit: the amount of time this thread has gone on.....you could have found your ROM long ago by reading the different rom features.
It seems apparent no one is going to go look for you.
We got an RC party going on here? I had to hand in my RC badge a while back but I hope you guys still like me!
As stated ROM and kernel choice are influenced by a huge amount of variables, that's something you'll have to find out yourself by trying a bunch and seeing what works for you. "What ROM should I use?" is just a thinly veiled way of asking what's the best ROM, so it's against the rules.

For the record I was not really referring to how long it takes to answer my question, as I work in the Technology field, I'm at work and also have a life. I was referring to the underutilization of Q&As in general. As its quicker to get an answer, feedback or open discussion on the development forum but posts are ADMIN Noted and pushed here. I noticed it's much more strictly enforced on some phone forums but say for a S5 it's tons of Q&A discussions right in the development forum itself for a particular Rom. Which is cool because it's more traffic. I don't personally care which one I use but.... Seems like Q&A Forums are trolled by some people who may or may not be more knowledgeable about a certain subject than another and can't wait to chime in with an answer like "You literally posted your previous question twelve hours before. lab rats rom miracast!!
I am thinking of trying this rom, but I have a question. Would using this rom break miracast capability. The phone usually checks itself to see if the rom is official, does using this rom bypasses this. I use the feature everyday, and would hate to lose it. back in the note 2 days we would have to use triangle away to fool the system into thinking it was official.

This looks interesting, what kernel did you install after installing the ROM itself. I"ve seen Boeffla, SmartPack, and Phoenix for TW Roms for verizon. There could be others I suppose in other threads though.
Also, did you do anything with CSC, That's an acronym that I'll have to look up and I've never had to worry about that option. Debloated as it is, is really nice, I'd say it's one of , if not, the fastest TW rom out. But I'm looking for something to debloat myself if possible as I wanted the theme engine from another newer phone like for example the s7/8/9 or note series or whatever phone, but substratum would be the shiznit.
Thanks for the reply, and I'm still collecting info from everyone else the more opinions the merrier IMHO that way not only myself but maybe others can make a decision.
I ran Phoenix 15 a while bak and it was a pain to install and use. But the theme engine worked flawlessly. I have all the files from one of the newer phones I found somewhere that after you copy them to the right places and restart your phone you can use s7 or s8 themes I beleieve.
Ahh that's cool the csc code can meke you TW ROM think your phone is something else... VERY COOL>

I like phones that look like "official", "untouched" and don't use rooted phones in everyday life.
That's why I use stock SM-G900V kernel for both CID15 and 11.
But if you have a CID15 phone, you can unlock the bootloader and use any kernel, of course.

Yes, the most obvious options are the APNs for local operators (I'm on the opposite side of the Globe from Verizon ) and some useful features as the phone call voice recorder.
But mostly I use this ROM because it's international and contains many languages - I use 2 languages besides English in my everyday life .
On the other hand, SM-G900V is a very good and inexpensive device and works just excellent with this ROM.

Ouch that looks like a lot of work, or did miss something?

Just summering if anyone had tried any of those as some say they're for our model and some say they'll work with the correct kernel.
I've been on AOSP/LOS MM,N, and O. I just wanted to try something different.
Thanks and sorry if it's been asked before

Thanks for making this thread. I have been wanting to know if there was a good rooted ,debloated, and themeable tw ROM available for our phones. I am chomping @THE bit to see if you come up with anything good.

Nothing special.
The main idea is to use the system image from a good international ROM and the rest of firmware parts from the most recent G900V stock ROM.
Devbase idea is great and beautiful itself but I think is not that much needed for G900V.
Personally I use this ROM in stock unrooted variant.
The ROM (system image) is flashed to G900V from SafeStrap recovery.

Personally you use which rom?
My issues or quirks so far, going back to older twrp, just the right one so that my SD can be read, and I think none of the earlier versions that allow aroma to function correctly, can deal with my ExtSD that is set as internal in storage in N and O. So, I bit the bullet and tried a couple taking care to flash the correct kernel in each case. However, my efforts were fruitless, and I ended up completely wiped. And while I keep a lot backed up regularly, It had been a while but I didn't lose much important stuff but more like stuff I just don't like having to chase down, like the latest magisk, nanodroids zips, xposed, custom kernel, and so on..
Either way, after trying two different roms, Nemesis and Noise, which I was really looking forward to running, neither worked well. I can't remember making calls or sending texts, but I do remember a lot of apps crashing constantly but perhaps there's more to do that select a kernel, the one thing they ask you to select doesn't have an option for vzw. The code thing, that's probably what screwed me on both attempts.
For those who are wondering, there's the phoenix ROM in the vzw dev thread. It does have the theme engine from Samsung. I just wanted to try something like Noise or another Rom.
Also I remember downloading the files needed from somewhere to add to a stock rom to add the theme engine. There's quite a bit, but I'm almost certain this would work, for the theme engine, but I'd like to try some of the newer samsung apps.
I kinda really hate going back to to stock based rom because I have a feeling it's not going to be up to date with security patches. That's one thing I like about running Oreo, and even Nougat, there have been several dev's / builders releasing roms with the latest security patches baked in.. RR for example on AndroidFileHost, I think I saw viper, and others as well.
I'm still undecided at this point, and I'm just getting my apps back and with everything else after my accidential SD wipe when I tried to install one of the roms. That really sucked because my last full phone backup was a year ago.
Keep me posted if you guys get any of those ROM's from there working.
Well I've tried a couple and none of them have cell service of any type working for me. I've tried Noise and Unique to no avail. Unique booted fine but no service, Noise wouldn't get past the initial boot screen. This is just my experience so YMMV.
Oh, I've had excellent luck with the Phoenix ROM for CID 15 phones. Everything works as it should. But I still prefer AOSP or LOS based ROMS. If I can only get data working as it should when I'm not on Verizon towers.
