[Q] UnNamed Install Failed - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Hello all,
Just got the Skyrocket about a month ago, it's rooted, but just got into the idea of installing anew ROM/Kernel and decided to try out UnNamed, then possibly install Faux123's Kernel.
I booted to CWM (5.0.2.6), backed up, wiped, wiped cache and tried to install from zip, but the install fails with Status 1. I have searched everywhere, but couldn't find anything about it. I am currently restoring the NANDroid backup I made prior to attempting to flash so I can use my phone.
Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated as I am brand new to the Android scene.
Chris

Where did you get the rom from?

This ROM is for the I777, correct? Why would you put it on a I727? It would be nice if a version would come out for the I727.

SMH.....
and we wonder why manufacturers want to lock down the devices....

There's your problem...

No need to be rude. I made a simple mistake. At least I had the common sense to back up first so it's not like I'm in a bad situation.
Well, back to researching other ROMs then.

Before I discovered XDA I started on Google and a lot of results came up for UnNamed and the Skyrocket like someone tagged the site/post/whatever incorrectly. As far as the research goes I want to look at what the different ROMs have to offer, any complaints or issues users are experiencing with them, etc. to make a decision as to which one I would like to install. Same thing with Kernels.

Rooting/roms/flashing HELP

Hi. Im fairly new to the Android OS. I just switched from an iphone. And ive been seeing/hearing a lot of talk about rooting, flashing roms, etc. I know that there are probably many threads on this, but I just wanted to know what are the pros and cons of rooting, flashing roms and such. And if I decide to do so, how do I? What rom would be best (for my sgs4g)? Sorry if this was too muxh to ask. Thanks in advance

Well right now, the best ROM you can have is Gingerbread, which just came out recently.
Rooting is very similar to Jailbreaking when it comes to iPhone; it allows you to perform speed tweaks, and enable functionality not available on standard software.
As for flashing these ROMs, make sure you download a program called ODIN.
Before that, install the Samsung USB Drivers and read THIS.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028
I compiled a few tutorials on some various tweaks on my site as well, and have a few download links for files if you need them.
Good luck!

Im not sure that Gingerbread would be the best choice right now for someone just starting out. It appears that the ROM that whitehawkx just releases still has a few bugs to be worked out. I would say that Bionix is probably a better choice for the moment.
Hah thanks. But I just had a few more questions. Do I need to be rooted to install gingerbread? Is flashing necessary? And is installing the new software just as easy as jailbreaking like an iphone?

First off. Post in the correct section. This belongs in General. Please try searching before making a new thread. You know that this has been answered several times in multiple threads. I came from and Iphone too and I took the time to do the research. First just go to the Bible for SGS 4G. You'll find it here in this section. Make sure you read everything. I too was a noob but I took the time to read everything before posting a new thread on what's been answered just for your convenience.

I would suggest doing TONS of reading on all the topics related to flashing/rooting/etc... Another reason why I think Gingerbread would be a bad choice for you right now is because I don't think ClockworkMod works with it yet. Without CWM you won't be able to do things like installing zips from your SD card and doing complete backups of your phone in case you mess something up. Yes, you will need to be rooted in order to flash to a new ROM. Flashing is only necessary if you want a ROM. Like what you have? Then don't flash.
Android is a pretty easy OS to use when you get used to it. But make sure that you take it slow and read everything carefully. Hope this helps.
Thanks for all the feedback everyone.. I'll be sure to look into this morw before I decide what to do.

Ehh, I've been running on Gingerbread and aside from a single bluetooth issue, I really have no complaints.
Bionix is a good choice too, though. You may be right in suggesting that as a beginners ROM.
So, Go with Bionix, edwenoid, it'll allow you to do many more tweaks.
Remember, this might seem pretty complicated at first, but I've had a Galaxy S 4G for only about a month now and i'm not too bad at this whole tweaking thingamajig

Rooting Mesmerize already running 2.3.4?

I picked up a Mesmerize yesterday and was surprised to find it already running 2.3.4. I'm not sure if that's already a common thing on these, but coming from the Captivate world (still have it for personal use, the Mez is for work) it seemed very surprising.
Anyway, I definitely want to root this thing and get rid of the bloat; Is there a specific process for rooting these things with 2.3.4? I keep seeing stuff for Eclair and Froyo, but am unsure if GB uses the same Z4Root process or not.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Good luck.. there is NO development going on for this phone.

There doesn't appear to be any way for users to root GB on our phones at the moment. The only solution that I've found presented so far is to flash a pre-rooted ROM.

The developers didn't want to get fisted.
To the best of my knowledge, you basically have to flash in a rooted image - the older root exploits used apparently were finally patched in 2.3.

I've counted about 10 or so Gingerbread ROMs available for the Mesmerize, 2 AOSP and the rest TW-based. Roughly half have had some sort of activity within the month.
Oh yea and CM7.1 just dropped this morning, so yes there is still dev for this phone............
Anyone actually looking check out rootzwiki.com its got a decent mez section. Also if u have a new eh09 outta the box it wont except anything below eh09. Weird modem issues.

ya i'll have to disagree too, there are lots of TW and non-TW based roms out there, personally I use MIUI...honestly unless u have to root specifically for an application and don't want to use a custom rom rooting the stock rom is useless, since the mes has an unlocked bootloader you can just flash clockwork whenever you want and load whatever rom suits you.

Don't use rom manager aka rom mangler!!! Thanks management!!!

Thanks management
SORRY luc or any mod that will delete this lol just going though the recent threads and no matter what we say they always seem to install it!!!
close or delete at your leasure
please use krylons cwm final

if you installed rom manager delete it and take the update.zip from krylons thread and put it to the root of your sd card..
*Note*
Newer kernels dont require this as cwm is built directly into the kernel..

I figured that it may work with a vibrant ROM as I heard it works on the regular galaxy s, so I Odin back to stock, reinstalled Rom manager and flashed cm7 for the vibrant...now my phone won't even boot...what gives? Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? It's almost like Rom manager doesn't work on this phone or something. Someone should make a step by step guide for flashing this phone...you know, like an SGS4G Bible.

If you installed it and didn't use it, no problem.
If you used it to 'install', then you earned a one way trip to using Odin to get everything back.
Raver, if you don't mind could you please make the title have capital letters and not lowercase like it does. There is no reason for it other than everytime I open the forum, it bugs me. Also, what is up with the "bold" html command ""?
I wonder what goes through other peoples heads when they decide hey I'm going to root my phone and install a custom Rom. I mean the first thing I did was a Google search on how to root SGS4G. That lead me to XDA. Then I found the actual SGS4G forum and began searching for guides. This was the same process for my MT3G and my G1. I don't understand why people would just grab Rom manager and assume it's a cure all. Boggles the mind.

that works out fine if the first thing you get led to is xda, but if you are unlucky like me then you end up at joe schmoe's tech blog or something similar and they tell you that any android phone can be "hacked" with superoneclick and rom manager. thats where the true issue lies, imo: that not the sites state the same info and most of that is wrong.
Thanks raver!

+1 Sure there were multiple sites related to the subject, which is why you take a little bit of time to examine more than one. I know I didn't just click the first option and run with it.
This post got me thinking. We have the SGS4G Bible but apparently it can be a little overwhelming and too much information for some people to digest before they start modding their phones.
Keeping the biblical theme maybe a simplified "SGS4G TEN COMMANDMENTS" that contain the ten most common questions and answers, noob mistakes, and does and don'ts in one place. Simple, easy to read, and easy to refer people to. For example...
Commandment 1: DO NOT USE ROM MANAGER...EVER!
Commandment 2: DO NOT FLASH VIBRANT ROMS....EVER! - THE SGS4G IS NOT A VIBRANT!
etc, etc....you get the idea.
Any thoughts?

Okay people I just bought this phone and I'm coming from MyTouch 4G. I've been reading for the past 2 days about how to flash a SGS4G and honestly,..it's crazy! Little overwhelming to be Honest...to the point, I rooted my phone with Superoneclick, I have superuser, so I know it's rooted. Plus, I have Titanium Backup running on my phone. Everything is still FACTORY SET on the phone. It is running 2.2.1 Froyo. I did read about Froyo udate zip CWM and recovery and have downloaded them. My question is since I want to flash A Rom does it have to be Froyo only? If there is such a thing?? Or can it be Gingerbread 2.3.6? And is there anything else I need to download? I know I have to follow to the tee on the OP that the Dev. says to do. I just want to be sure exactly what I need to do..

The gb ext4 starter pack saved me alot of headache when I first got this phone. Hands down it is the best way to go. Just make sure you follow the directions exactly. Its guides like this and the people that make them that make XDA so great.
I'm new to it as well and like you are saying, it's overwhelming to root and flash on this phone. But I followed the GB starter pack the other day and included the Vahalla Final rom as my choice and everything worked great. Some things actually happened a hair different than described and I thought it screwed up but it worked.
But I think I just screwed up trying to do a restore

I'm on the same boat as the OP, I have a mytouch 4g and my cousin is about to upgrade soon, so she offered to sell me her galaxy s 4g for $75 so I'm gonna take up on it.

Most will tell you if you want a rom ported do it yourself. The devs are working on what they are working on. It isn't really our place as end-users to make request (my opinion of course) rather be grateful for all the awesome **** they have done and are working on. So no... it isn't easy.
And yes --> We have some fantastic ROMS.

Now that we have an unlocked bootloader and working recovery, has anyone flashed any of the roms from the international htc one x (tegra 3)? I just tried Insert coin rom but it fails to install due to do mismatch in model id. I guess you could edit your build.prop to endeavor but I haven't tried it yet. Feel free to post which rom you used and how it worked out for you.

I'm reading it and it says has anyone flashed, not ported. Lol
lol just make a backup in cwm. worst case scenario you have to restore like I did. Won't hurt to try.

People read Q&A all the time. This is no reason to ignore the rules and clog up Development with random questions.

So now i have an unlocked bootloader and i have CWM installed. If i were to use a RUU, the clean rom DE, would it remove CWM and put the stock one back on? Or would it leave CWM intact?

wait a day for a few roms. They're already out there, they just need to edit them a tad.

When you start calling people names, you are the one that appears immature and childish, no matter how correct you may be.
The problem is, though, you are not correct. Maybe it only appears as a "simple" mistake to you, probably because you don't care or haven't spent enough time in the forums, but for people who frequent XDA then it has become a cumulative nuisance.
Also, when the majority of users responding in the thread you started is either questioning the logic of your statement or placement of the thread then maybe you need to reflect on what you were trying to accomplish and maybe take into consideration how you can achieve better results in the future. Long story short, try to learn from your mistakes.
Okay, so, International One x won't be compatible because of hardware differences, but what about the One S roms? I just tried flashing the CM9 port for the S, and it flashed successfully but upon reboot the screen was just filled with green graphical glitches. Rebooting back into recovery and attempting to restore my backup of the stock system didn't work at all, so RUU for me... but, why wouldn't a One S ROM work? It has 99% of the same hardware... besides the qHD screen. I remember being able to flash a Droid 3 ROM to my bootloader-locked Atrix 2 and it booting up just fine. What's different here?

LTE radio for one. Probably some other minor differences too.
