Heart Rate Monitor - Samsung Gear S3

Anybody having problems with the heart rate monitor not working most of the time?
When I attempt to take my heart rate it says to clean the sensors or reposition it on my wrist. I have to play around with the watch and try like 5 or 6 times before it works.
I have tried everything from making the band tighter to moving it and even cleaning the sensors but no luck.

Sounds like you may need a replacement. Rarely do I have to wiggle the watch around to get a good reading. Both my Fit and Fit 2 were much more particular. Good luck.

[Review] VR Shinecon using Nexus 6P (updated with pics)

So my Shinecon VR headset came in two days. I wanted to post the review here because I upgraded from a much smaller phone with much less pixel density, which is what drew me to VR technology in the first place. That being said, I'm sure I'm not the only one that wants to make the jump into VR with the acquisition of my new N6P. I had the opportunity to thoroughly try out the headset in short bursts of time. That means I haven't watched a movie on it. I decided to exclude any pics because the ones provided by Amazon will be much better anyhow.
http://www.amazon.com/Generation-Sh...=UTF8&qid=1447287272&sr=8-1&keywords=shinecon
http://www.amazon.com/SainSonic-Hel...=UTF8&qid=1447287272&sr=8-2&keywords=shinecon
Place of purchase: AliExpress (Amazon has it too but I purchased from AE because I knew my Nexus 6P was going to take a while to arrive anyways)
Price: $25 from AE (there's a range of prices)
Phone tested with headset: Nexus 6P (no case, just a vinyl skin)
Comfort:
In comparison to the original Google Cardboard, it's obviously more luxurious and comfortable. The Shinecon has faux leather all around the areas that contact your face, except for the nose. The nose area is where a bit of light leaks in, but can easily be remedied with a bit of foam. However, I decided to leave this open as a port for ventilation because the phone can get warm depending on what type of VR content you're consuming.
The head straps are also made of good quality Velcro, so it's easily adjustable. The placement of the straps also seem pretty ideal, as the headset doesn't seem to be torquing my head downwards too much while in use.
Features:
The Shinecon has a few knobs to tweak the lens' position. There is a single knob on top that adjusts the distance between the lens. There's also knobs on either side of the headset that adjusts the fore/aft of the entire phone to bring the display into focus.
The phone loads into the headset with a spring/clamp mechanism. However, I found it difficult to load/unload my N6P mostly because the phone itself is pretty large for the mount. I wouldn't recommend any phone larger than the N6P for the Shinecon, but there's a tiny bit of wiggle room if you insist. The clamping mechanism also seems rather fragile, as the plastic bends pretty easily. The tabs for the clamp are also rather thin. If it does break, the clamp/tray can be removed with a few screws, and you could load the phone into the headset with some foam. Once the phone is loaded into the tray, all you do is fold the front "door" back into position and a magnet keeps things closed. The magnet seems sufficiently strong to hold my N6P without any problems. There is also an extra backplate that can be removed (attached via magnet) to allow better ventilation of your device, as well as exposing the camera for augmented reality, etc.
The front door also has a gap on either side of the headset, allowing for easy access to any ports on the phone that are on the top or bottom of the phone's edges. I could easily charge my N6P and use headphones while using the Shinecon.
Viewing Content:
Since this headset does not include any of its own software, I can only talk about the experience provided by 3rd party apps. I used Cardboard Theater to view my own content, and tested other VR videos with VRSE and Youtube. Everything was very simple to use, and the lens were of great quality. Picture was very clear, and the FOV was fantastic. Using Cardboard Theater, I was able to adjust "how far I am to the screen." In other words, it felt like I was on the front row of the theater with very good immersion. Not much black space on the edges of the field, which was a problem on the original Google Cardboard headset. I don't know if the advertised 110* FOV is accurate, but I'm pretty satisfied with what I'm seeing.
Build Quality:
Overall build quality was better than expected. Everything fit together very nicely. Nothing was squeaky. There were no loose threads on the leather. The hinges did not creak. The lenses weren't scratched or warped. I basically had no complaints. Especially given the very cheap price, I would definitely buy it again. This headset was slightly more pricey than a few other Chinese brand headsets, but the quality and FOV/immersion seemed to justify the slightly higher price tag.
TLDR:
I liked it. I would buy it again.
If you liked the review, a simple press of the "thanks" button will do! If you have questions, you can ask here.
wrong post...anyway i'm gonna order for myself one of these hope this shinecon it's ok ..worried only about fov...i'm gonna use it with a note 4
How do you control things in apps like cardboard?
Cardboard utilizes a magnet, where your phone responds to a change in the magnetic field.
For my shinecon, you can either implement that yourself, or touch the screen when you need to. Most other apps outside of cardboard don't need the magnet. You just "stare" at controls to activate them

What's a gear box? I googled and found some transmissions[emoji1]
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Well VR BOX is a similar variant and now it has a v2.0 too! Available with Bluetooth remote for $23 approx...why don't you YouTube it? Just check it out and tell me which one to go for?
Ohhhh you meant vr box. I was considering that one too, because it simply looks nicer than my shinecon. However, other reviews mentioned the FOV wasn't good. I opted for the shinecon purely based on FOV, and immersion is great. I wouldn't spend less to get less immersion. The Bluetooth remote is cool, but one can be had for $5

One issue is the need to "calibrate" the unit and Shinecon doesn't provide a QR code but on another site someone chimed in that they were whiteboxing the units and provided one --> http://vrkix.com/pages/faqs
One other issue I had: 1) adjusting the phone to lens distance doesn't have a "stop" and I had to push to get phone to move back. A related issue is the slide on bottom has nothing to match movement to top so unit can get crooked and jammed.
Note: There are some foam pads that are provided so you can elevate the unit so that the side buttons are not activated. Using the
Other wise, great device once you get it dialed in (old eyes)

Yup, they're typically around $5. You could even try plugging in your ear buds and try the inline button. Heard it works for some.

Hi, I generate it according to my PD. My PD is 70mm.
In the cardboard viewer profile generator, the Inter-lens distance, I use my PD. As the PD can be adjusted, I don't know what should fill, so I guess it's OK because you can adjust it to fit your eyes.
As to the screen to lens distance, the VR Shinecon can be adjusted too, so I use the maximum one 65mm. It works for some people with short-sight problem. I let my friend try this QR code when adjust to the minimum 55mm, she is -3.00 dioptres, and she said she can see clear in 55mm, no prescription glasses needed. For me, no difference for 55mm or 65mm.
The difficult part for me is the Distortion coefficients. Maybe I'm wrong there? I hope someone could help me out about the math?

hi thanks for the report
some question
i'm planning to go for shinecon or boafeng (on AE), i have some questions wich may seem evident but i'm really not used to that kind of toys
1. Is the mouse controller able to control all apps on the phone like on a pc
2. In case we want to see normal vids on youtube or other apps, would it still be possible ?
thanks

1. I don't know what mouse controller it is that you speak of.
2. YouTube has a built in feature to allow all videos to be viewed in VR now. That includes regular videos, and there are also actual VR videos that support 360*experiences.

Disppointed with the Barometer/Altimeter App

I am very disappointed with the Samsung Barometer/Altimeter app, The barometer only registers in whole inches of mercury. All watches I had in the past, register in hundredths of inches of mercury. I wonder who else feels the same and would like Samsung to fix this error or maybe a developer could create a replacement app.
Edit: They finally updated the app and it shows the barometric pressure in 100th of a inch of mercury. Big thumbs up

I agree. Hopefully Samsung does address it. Meanwhile I found a free app called "FBarometer." Just search/install via Gear app. Seems pretty accurate, doesn't register in hundredths but does do tenths so a step up from wholes inches at least.
I have a feeling Samsung rushed to get this watch out (obviously, everythings backordered now it seems).
I have a feeling there will be many updates in the near future. At least I hope so.
If you touch the barometer to display the trend look at the outside ring, the barometric pressure is displayed gauge style with a red dash marking the pressure and the units are to the hundreds place. It's still not great but you can at least tell the difference between 28.5 and 29.
I live 77m above sea level and my watch shows -97m, a bit out me thinks.
Barometer and altimeter are useless. I live between - 90 and plus 154 meters, in Amsterdam which is - 3. Consequently also the floor counter is facked up.

You can use another very good app called Barometer & Altimeter. I use it when go mountain. I talked to author this app before download it. It was tested by a few climbers and created with help mathematicians and physicists. The measurement error is < 1%. It is better than my stock altimeter GPS-based. Very good app, absolutely worth buying.

I totally agree! Looks like the sensors that Samsung has choosen are totally pieces of crap.
Altimeter: from my sofa 5m... couple of hours later 35m!!!
Barometer and heart rates are also giving vera random figures compare to 'real' hardware.
Samsung just wanted to show more features and be in line with competition but it does not work.
They better should have left very useful features that were present on previous model likre IR Remote that I had on my Gear 2 Neo!
I will never understand Samsung when they decide to replace features in place of add new features. Mainly when they remove very useful and working gears and replace those with unreliable sensors....
You do realise that the altimeter is air pressure based right?
If the air pressure has changed during the two hours you were on the sofa then the altimeter will show a different reading.
That's the whole point of calibrating it before you set of on a climb or whatever you're up to.
@Lakota
Where is the setting screen, been through settings tried hold the screen nothing.

Yes it's barometric. And altitude jumps all over the place even when the pressure is constant. Eg walking up the stairs, 2 stories, results in a climb of -12 to +30 meters, should be - 3 to +4. And my daily run which is totally flat at - 3 shows 116 meter hills. It's true and authentic crap and I'm gonna replace for the Fenix 5 as soon as possible!

Thats why shealth thinks i climbed 10 flights of stairs while just walking about for nine hours.
To those who think that their Gear S3 sensors are any accurate, just try to disconnect your phone Position/GPS or to use the gear S3 alone. You will then see the truth about those very inaccurate sensors that Samsung has put in the Gear!
They are only 'providing' you with accurate figures when position/gps on your phone is on, in other words, the 'accurate' info you are seeing are provided by internet data, and not by the sensors themselves... Shame on Samsung for that!
i have the same issue. at 155 ft above sea level, but watch states between -150 and +435
it also only counts 1/10th of floors climbed
I don't get accurate floor counts but I know for a fact the gps works well without my phone. At least the golf app I use gives me accurate readings in standalone mode.

Same here. I stood outside under a clear sky around 30m above sea level. Tried calibrating thrice but each time it says -7M.
Skydiving
I have used the S3 Frontier when I skydive along with my Viso II Digital Altimeter and they are within 25-50ft of each other. This is without the phone. It is actually pretty accurate. I do not use the built in app. I use one from the store called Skydiver Altimeter. It works great.
Well no clue about others.. but just got mine and comparing with two others one ming Suunto and its like some others pretty darn accurate. Just going up a few feet.. was spot on. I wonder if like the phone you need to reset it at now and again.

Pedometer and Heart Rate Sensor

Anyone having an issue with the HR sensor not picking up a pulse? I've tried both sides of the wrist and finger tips. Keeps giving me a message "unable to measure heart rate. Tap again to measure") Maybe I'm missing something. Also, the Pedometer is not measuring ANY steps. I feel like I've gone through all the settings. Figured I would try here before contacting customer service. (They really are not knowledgeable on their hardware in my opinion.) Any help is appreciated, thanks.

The only thing I could think of is you have it on too tight or not tight enough. I still have the protective plastic on mine and have no problems with it still detecting my heart rate.
Heart rate
Hy. So you mean that the Gear S3 can have the heart rate during during a run by feets. Because i am thinking selling my polar clock and replace it by the gear S3.

Trick the watch into thinking its being worn?

I got the new Samsung Gear Sport and apparently it doesn't realize I'm wearing it due to the bone in my wrist or the tattoo I have. Is there any app that I can side-load or find in the gear store that will trick it into thinking its being worn?
That's... Odd. There's a chance that your watch is defective, it might be good to see if you can exchange it or have it sent out for warranty if you try it on your other wrist and it still doesn't work. What if you move it a little higher up? Is there any situation you've been able to get it to think it's being worn?
Lastly, what symptoms is your watch experiencing that makes you think it doesn't realize it's worn? I can use my watch when holding it in my hand.
It works on the other wrist just fine, it works just fine further up the arm....it's the tattoo. The only thing that is bothering me is no always on display because it thinks I'm not wearing it. It won't read my blood pressure which I could care less about.
My Zen watch 2 would still show always on display when it wasn't on my wrist... Why don't companies actually quality control test stuff properly anymore? =(
So, I found an article about someone getting theirs to work with a reflective material. Bent washer + $5 chrome skull sticker, and electrical tape = win.
Watch always thinks it is being worn. Doesn't read heart rate but don't need that.

Fixing a Gear S3 - Bezel Rotation sensor not working

All - My S3 got wet and went into a bootloop. I sent it to Samsung and they sent it back without fixing it claiming that it was too expensive to fix. It is up to me to fix it myself.
I managed to resolve the bootloop problem by opening it up and letting it air out. (see other thread for details)
Question - the only problem I have now is that when I rotate the bezel, it doesn't register anything on the watch. The connector/ sensor seems to be dead.
Anyone know how I could fix this? Do I need a new entire display unit (Samsung Gear S3 frontier (SM-R760) Display unit complete grey GH97-19658A) or is there something else I should try? A part to replace?
I did take off the bezel and I cleaned it. (did it very carefully as there are pieces that can be easily lost)
The watch works well and I can do almost everything without the bezel working but would like to get it working to 100%.
Thanks for any ideas people may have.
Same problem
same problem on my Galaxy Watch. Any update on how to fix?

I took mine apart again hoping I could get the bezel to work but no luck.
I assume the sensor connects to the top part of the watch. There are two connecters that attach to the main part of the watch, a big one and a much smaller one. Perhaps the smaller connector is the problem.
Not a super big deal but I would love to get my watch working at 100%.
Any Samsung techs with an idea?
I figured out that my problem was just that I was wearing a watch band with a magnetic clasp. If the magnet was too close to the watch, but bezel wouldn't work. If I switched bands everything was fine.

You sneaky son of a gun. That worked.
For what it's worth: the bezel sensor is a set of 3 hall effect sensors. If you take the bezel ring off the watch (various youtube guides show how) and look at the underside, you'll see 24 indents and 8 of these (1 in 3) will be a different color. If your watch isn't registering anything, these magnetic spots may be de-magnetized.
https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Samsung+Galaxy+Watch+Teardown/117519 <-- explained here (see step 15 ... and if you look closely at the bottom right of step 8 first picture you can see the 3 hall effect sensors in place)
On my watch it sometimes didn't register the bezel turning. I thought it might just be gummed up. I eventually noticed that it would miss 3 "clicks" in every rotation.
Now I finally understand why: one (only one of eight magnets) has become de-magnetized and the hall effect sensor won't read it as it passes across.
Now I just need to work out how to re-magnetize the one spot.
