Vibration while typing is not loud, however the vibration while receiving texts is quite loud... Is it just my phone or do others notice this as well?
I realize that "too loud" is relative, however my old phone didn't make any noise while vibrating...

yeah it's ridiculous. Maybe someone will find where the vibration intensity settings (if they exist) are buried.
Mine's fine. I mean, I'll hear it if it's sitting on a hard surface like my desk, but if it's in my pocket, I feel the vibration but definitely don't hear it. The vibration on my DHD was audible. Not loud enough to be worried about it, but the One X is definitely quieter.
As for vibration intensity, we'll almost certainly get a mod to adjust this.
Yeah I hear mine more than I feel it in my pocket. It ruins the whole being discrete with text messages or notifications.
Definitely freaking loud as heck.

I'll second this. Should do more vibration, less buzzing. Thin phone, little room for motor and weight spinner...
There has to be some buried settings... The key vibration is nice and mellow... No reason we shouldn't be able to lighten up the notification buzz.
The iPhone 4S introduced a new type of vibration unit that is silky smooth... Hope Apple don't have it patented... Should be used on all future phones.
I love this phone, but the larger size (coming from a GS2) definitely puts a strain on my thumb as I move it up and down the screen, especially to hit the buttons. I don't have small hands, but I don't have large hands either, and this is definitely causing some discomfort after heavy usuage.
So, in case anyone else is experiencing this is well, a nice solution is to install Pie Control from the play store and configure it to provide home, back and menu buttons on the sides of the screen when you swipe. It works great, just takes a while to get into the habit, and it's much quicker and easier than moving all the way to the bottom to press the buttons. It's completely configurable as well.
Lol, gave me a chuckle.
I had a similar situation when I got my s3 coming from an s1. Eventually I got used to the larger screen and just naturally started holding the phone differently. My s4 isn't a great deal bigger than my s3 but it is noticeable. You will all get used to the size in no time at all, I promise.

I know, it sounds like a classic first-world problem ... I have this amazing, incredible, portal device that can do almost anything anywhere I go, but ... my poor thumb gets tired using it!! :crying:
Are you kidding me? This thread is sooooo pointless.
Guys, my eyes are straining from peering around at such a larger screen than my Galaxy Nexus.
Any tips?

I had a similar problem going to s3 but I have small hands. I had to get treated for an injury at the base of my palm which was probably due to one-handed use. I kind of avoid using my thumb for scrolling or pressing buttons while holding the phone one-handed. I just use the index finger of the other hand to touch the screen. As a general rule, if you have discomfort using something, don't keep doing it, or take a rest, or find another way to do it. I learned the hard way

Yeah, very true! That's why I'm trying out the Pie Control, so far it's working pretty well. Also alternating by using my left hand when possible.

I tried using Pie Control for a while but it became a bit of an annoyance whenever you didn't want to touch it. Another thing you can do, if your S4 version supports it, is to install an AOSP-based ROM and turn on the soft/virtual keys so that they appear above the capacitive buttons. Then turn off the capacitive buttons and their LED (the hack is found in a Google search). This makes reaching for the buttons easier but at the expense of shorter screen space.
There will be insensitive people here who will scoff at and mock your problems (happened to me before too, just for saying I had small hands), but RSI is a real serious issue and is relevant to this phone, especially as these flagship devices are not going to get any smaller. Not everyone here has large hands.
Anyways I think this should be moved to the Q&A section.. ?

Nope. You're not the only one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2547293, http://www.modaco.com/topic/366780-power-button-rattle/
The buttons on mine wiggle a little as well. And according to the reviews that I have read and watched that seems to be a normal thing with this phone.
I suppose this is just part of the lower price point. And to be honest, I can live with wigglin' buttons as long as the phone works well^^ And the buttons still work perfectly fine and "feel right" when you press them, it's not like they feel mushy. So it's perfectly fine in my opinion.

Exactly, they do feel "clicky"^^ I've tested devices before where the buttons were so mushy and weird, half the time you couldn't tell whether you actually pressed the button correctly or not...
I don't care about the wigglin', as long as the buttons give me the feedback that I actually pressed them I am perfectly happy.

I have a similar issue.. my power button is tighter than my volume rocker which seems very loose and rattles even when I am just handling the phone! Annoying!
Should I try get an exchange or is this common perk of the MG?

It's a common thing. That and the mediocre camera are probably what we could put into the "you get what you pay for" box.
But in exchange for that we got Gorilla Glass 3, a more than solid quadcore CPU and a 720p display for under 200 bucks (if you got the 8gb version)! And while the buttons wiggle they still have a nice clicky feedback.
If you want a phone with better build quality you should buy a phone within a different price range^^ But to be honest, I expected the build quality to be much worse. This actually strikes me as a pretty solidly built phone.

The camera is, surprisingly enough, relatively decent. I reckon that Motorola's skinned camera app is at fault, which is why everyone is quibbling over such subtle minutia. A phone with a five megapixel camera that snaps decent photos is more than enough for most people.
Sent from my XT1032 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
The camera is alright. It's good enough for sharing some photos on social networks and that is all you really need it for anyway^^
It's obvious that they tried to cut some corners with the camera but they didn't go too far with it. It's still a useful camera and not just utter garbage.

hi!
i have a first day of sale black N5 32GB with the rattling buttons issue and damn CPU binning of 1. so i saw the new bright red model and took a plunge. got it today.
now this baby is BEAUTIFUL!!! i mean it, the color is not what i expected, it looks like mountain emergency survival gear, its the coolest looking phone ive seen to date... awesome!
but... i have the damn rattling buttons AGAIN! can't believe it! havent they fixed this already? is this a red only issue now? i thought the other colors were long fixed. both the rocker and the power rattle. not only that, my CPU binning on this one is, gues... yeah ZERO!!! damn bad luck!
so yeah, i love the looks, but im getting rid of this baby. not worth all the effort to migrate to a WORSE phone than i already have. ill ebay it or something.
but i like it so much im tempted to order another red. can you guys comment on buttons and binning of your red hot hardware???
thank you!
EDIT:
FYI: to get to your cpu binning see:

You know the reason the buttons rattle is cause it ceramic right? Unless they change the buttons to plastic, all N5s will rattle somewhat. Super hard material mounted to be part of a much softer material like plastic makes it seem worse than it actually is.
And why does cpu binning matter? You're still good for a 10% overclock no matter how low it's binned. 2.26Ghz is not the CPU max. Every CPU is underclocked by default just for heat and power consumption reasons.

Are the buttons really THAT bad. My power button rattles a bit when I violently shake it next to my ear but when would I ever do that unless I meant to? I dont get it. Are people that picky or are mine just not that bad?

A lot of the issues people have with the Nexus 5 are seriously ridiculous.
Buttons rattling: Who shakes a phone to even notice a button rattling?
Phone Creaking When Squeezed: So now the Nexus 5 is a Teddy Bear?
Bad Viewing Angles: I thought that normal people look directly at their screen and not at it from an angle.
I CAN UNDERSTAND REAL DEFECTS BUT NONE OF THE ONES I JUST MENTIONED.

Nothing has been changed about the buttons since launch. This can at least confirm that for everyone.
I do agree with the phone being super bright hivis orange rather than red. Every time I pull it out of my pocket, someone has to make a comment about how bright it is. I have the button rattle, but only with the power button. No biggie.
My power button rattles like crazy on my red one. Don't care about CPU binning as I've never heard of it and have no intention of overocking or anything anyway.

the reason is not the material, its the design. a better design (like a small piece of silicone inside the device) would have precluded all rattling. the material only makes it more noticeable.
binning matters because lower bins use more power. the bins are not speed bins, they are power bins. undervolting is undesirable, as qualcomm in their infinite wisdom test and undervolt each chip separately to its max, while still guaranteeing proper functioning. i would not dare second guess them because my test, "running my phone for a couple of hours without CRASHING the system", succeeded. that is hardly a guaranty of error free processing.

some N5s are affected by light creeping from some corners on black backgounds. it can be VERY noticeable as soon as look at the screen from an angle. in general the angle thing IS a concern: i miss my N4, i think the higher res screen of the N5 is too little an advantage to bare the cost of horribly narrow viewing angles. i would rather have the N4 screen, but welcome the bigger size. this IS important: an upgrade should behave better or at least as well as the predecessor in EVERY way. otherwise its a tradeoff, not an upgrade.
to be fair, the N4 was just an excellent phone. it is very hard to beat.

The haptic feedback settings for non stock applications also seem to be very different.
For instance in SwiftKey when you turn off the stock vibration it feels completely different. Using non stock it feels like a vibration on other phones. With the stock vibration it feels more like a click.

Yes, this was the FIRST thing I noticed when setting up my phone. It was SUPER annoying!
All the reviewers keep saying how great the haptic feedback is and how it's almost as good as an iPhone. I agree the iphone's is nice, but this one does not impress me any more than the Pixel 2. I'm not saying it's bad, but does anyone else notice the vibration when you tap the bottom of the screen (for example, the back button), seems to originate from the top of the device. It feels very disconnected from where the taps are taking place on the screen.
At least with the PIxel 2, the entire phone vibrated seemingly equally no matter where I tapped. Either way, I just turn off vibrations for on screen buttons anyway. They drain the battery and don't make any sense. My brain already knows I'm touching a flat surface that isn't moving, so why try to trick it into thinking otherwise with a vibration?

This is so true.. Me, the ultimate phone whore, looking for that most ideal phone for me, who runs trough all phones possible (pixel 3 is my 5th phone in a period of 6months (iphone x, s9+, iphone xs max, pixel 2 ) was also super thrilled when I was hearing them reviewers claiming that the haptic feedback on pixel 3 is the best ever on an android phone.. Bull****..while its quite nice to type with vibration set to low (only setting which makes it ok sound wise) its still the same ****ty haptic feedback as on any other android. None of them come close to that of an iphone, where it feels supernice and natural, especially on the smaller ones where the palm covers the phone in full.
Nonetheless, for me, Pixel 3 is the best phone out-there - great performer at very compact size with best camera* (*photos)) in business + I really like how google skinzzzz its OS - colors, animations, widgets, all of its just looks nice.
