Power button wiggles - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Am I the only one whose Motorola G has a loose power button? It's not that big of a deal, but it makes a hollow noise if I shake the phone slightly. The volume buttons are fine though.
Am I just being paranoid?

Nope. You're not the only one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2547293, http://www.modaco.com/topic/366780-power-button-rattle/

The buttons on mine wiggle a little as well. And according to the reviews that I have read and watched that seems to be a normal thing with this phone.
I suppose this is just part of the lower price point. And to be honest, I can live with wigglin' buttons as long as the phone works well^^ And the buttons still work perfectly fine and "feel right" when you press them, it's not like they feel mushy. So it's perfectly fine in my opinion.

I agree. It's one of those things I didn't really notice until it was pointed out by someone else. How often do you pick up your phone and shake it anyway?! I actually think the buttons feel quite good - nice and "clicky"!

Exactly, they do feel "clicky"^^ I've tested devices before where the buttons were so mushy and weird, half the time you couldn't tell whether you actually pressed the button correctly or not...
I don't care about the wigglin', as long as the buttons give me the feedback that I actually pressed them I am perfectly happy.

That's exactly how my old Desire HD was. It sometimes took 2/3 goes to turn on the screen because I wasn't sure if I pressed the button or not... That and the button being in a stupid place!

I have a similar issue.. my power button is tighter than my volume rocker which seems very loose and rattles even when I am just handling the phone! Annoying!
Should I try get an exchange or is this common perk of the MG?

It's a common thing. That and the mediocre camera are probably what we could put into the "you get what you pay for" box.
But in exchange for that we got Gorilla Glass 3, a more than solid quadcore CPU and a 720p display for under 200 bucks (if you got the 8gb version)! And while the buttons wiggle they still have a nice clicky feedback.
If you want a phone with better build quality you should buy a phone within a different price range^^ But to be honest, I expected the build quality to be much worse. This actually strikes me as a pretty solidly built phone.

Take the back off, slide in a tiny bit of paper down the buttons, re-attach back, no more rattling

The camera is, surprisingly enough, relatively decent. I reckon that Motorola's skinned camera app is at fault, which is why everyone is quibbling over such subtle minutia. A phone with a five megapixel camera that snaps decent photos is more than enough for most people.
Sent from my XT1032 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

The camera is alright. It's good enough for sharing some photos on social networks and that is all you really need it for anyway^^
It's obvious that they tried to cut some corners with the camera but they didn't go too far with it. It's still a useful camera and not just utter garbage.

Power Button

I know this is a GENERAL problem, so this is in the right forum. Anyway, is anyone else having issues with their power button become recessed into the housing? Like, over time, has the power button become increasingly difficult to press?
I have had similar problems with previous HTC phones, not just the Inspire.

So you're seeing this on the Inspire too? How bad is yours, and does yours lose functionality at all?

Had mine for a year, haven't had any probs with the power button.
BTW,OP, it may be a general problem, but you also made it into a question. Conundrum?
yeah i dropped mine and broke the power button by indenting it in all the way. I can't even get it to turn on with a USB cable anymore.
Sounds to me like you actually broke something, not exactly what we're referring to here. What we mean is that the power button has become recessed into the housing, making to difficult to press. Sounds to me you broke something internally and/or the screen
My girlfriend upgraded to this phone when it came out, and I swear its just like that out of the box. I didn't know it was a problem, I thought it was by design, but I've always hated it.
It may be worth mentioning, I agree the power button has always been a little trouble, even when not worn out. I recently started using a Seidio Active case. The silicone covers the power button and it has it's own protrusion for pressing the power button. If you don't mind using a case, one like this may solve your problem.

Well the design of the Inspire does actually have a more recessed power button than a lot of other phones (e.g. the Thunderbolt) by design, so maybe that is what you're talking about.
I think it's nice looking though. It's just that it doesn't have the tactile feedback you need it to. I often press the button and get no result. It needs to have that distinct click feel to it, but doesn't.
The volume button is recessed the same but does feel a little better, but not much.

Power Button feel.

Does anyone else power button not feel as firm as the volume buttons? The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't 'click' as noticeably as the volume buttons. It feels a little different.
I could be just nitpicking though.

Well let me just join in on the nitpicking...my volume rocker is loose. If I put my thumb in the middle and "slide" the rocker up and down, the entire thing moves slightly. Meh.
Its kinda hard for me to get used to the power button coming from the captivate where the power button was on the side

I never would have noticed this, but my volume rocker does exactly the same thing.
I couldn't care less, though. What I care about is the wifi bug and the fact that my Gmail app takes 10-15 minutes to receive emails. Every other Android phone I've ever had has received Gmails to the Gmail app within 10-20 seconds (if not less).

I guess I just got use to the iPhone 4's distinct feel. When you push it, you'd know when you pressed it as if felt like it actually clicked. On the One X, it's almost a little mushy; not as distinct as the iPhone 4's feel and not even as distinct as the feel on the One X's volume rocker. I guess its nothing to be worried about?
Oh, and I tried shifting the volume rocker as well. Mine moves as well, but that's absolutely nothing to worry about. It's just a slight shift when you force it.
same here, volume is clicky just fine but power feels soft and mushy.
I'm using the Otterbox commuter series case on my HOX, and all of the buttons are a little hard to press because of it.
I almost ALWAYS buy my phones from Best Buy so I can get the Geek Squad Black Tie protection, but I had a rather unique circumstance that required me to get 2 new sim cards (I knew this going into it) and was doing a hardware swap, so at Best Buy it would have taken 3+ hours.. At the AT&T corp store I was in/out within 20.
I used to work for BBYM and we just didn't have access to the same systems that AT&T does. Not hating, just facts.
EDIT: Just realized that seemed completely off topic, I forgot to add the fact that I don't have GSBT is why I actually am using I case. I hate phone cases.
No HTC phone would be complete without a lackluster/poor tactile feedback power button.

Well mine is like that too. nothing to get too worried about. They are all like that. I seriously tried out 10 different models in the store. They were ready to throw me out. Lol.
But the iphone 4S button feels better. It actually clicked. Feels like my One X button will fail over time. Feels that way but will actually hold up just fine. I think we are being a bit nitpicky. After all we all want perfect phones.
I just got a white AT&T One X, and one of the first things I noticed is the soft power button. I then tried two demo units in a store. The black demo unit felt better than the white demo unit (about the same as mine).
I am thinking about exchanging mine, but after reading all this, I'm not sure if I will get anything better...

Volume Rocker Wake works on CM9 Alpha 5
I've been using CM9 Alpha 5 for a few hours now and it's great !
The first think I set was the Volume Rocker Wake as the Power Button is not as easy to press when using most cases covering the power button.
To enable it, go to SETTING --> DISPLAY --> VOLUME ROCKER WAKE
it enables waking the phone by pressing the volume rocker EITHER up/down.
There is no way to specify one or the other
However, it works great ! I'm really liking CM9, my only complaint is the missing HTC Camera which was just amazing with the hardware burst (I'm still looking for a way to flash it if that's even possible).
same
same here. hate this button
It amazes me that this button layout made it to production. Did they forget to test it before mass producing them? It's horribly uncomfortable to reach up there and press it. Only takes one awkward reach to realize that.

Found issue! Need to come up with solution...
So my HOX had great "clicky" unlock button that now all of a sudden is "soft". I was so bothered by it that I took the phone apart and found the issue. On the actual switch there is supposed to be a small dot on the bubble portion of the switch. If you look at the volume switch on the right side you should see what it should look like. This dot is something looks like it was stuck on on the exterior of the bubble surface so I am trying to think of a solution. Maybe a dot of crazy glue? Any ideas?
If you use crazy glue, chances are, the area of pressure on the bubble is going to increase, possibly not allowing the bubble to rebound.
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda premium
My fix...
Yeah glue didn't work. What I did was get a tiny piece of strong tape, actually used a piece from some industrial strength velcro, and added my own little dot on the bubble. Now it works better that ever! There is a site that sells the actual power button so if this doesn't work for a long perios of time I will just end up replacing the switch. The image of the button shows the little black dot that I was missing on mine.

loose power button

Hello Peeps,
Have any of you noticed that your power button is loose or wiggly?
I just noticed it on mine, my phone is only two weeks old and I just noticed this issue.
I am pretty bummed about it cause I just achieved root on it.
I suppose if I were to try to take it back, they would not exchange it because of it being rooted.
Any thoughts on this?
The power button is working just fine, I just do not like that it is so loose.
I did a google search and I see that some other people have reported the same issue.
Thank you,
Its normal, hell mine fell off one day.
I use a case so its no longer an issue.

Ya I think it is a pretty common problem but as long as it does not fall out then you are fine it's just one of those "build quality" issues that Samsung seems to have on all of their phones... Gotta LOVE plastic...
Yeah its just a poorly designed button to begin with. More of it "hangs out" of the case in the back than in the front, which makes it easy to apply too much pressure to certain areas. I definitely see how snapping it off could be a very easy thing to do, so my best suggestion would be to get a case or something. If you're that worried about losing it, you could always ODIN your phone back to stock and take it back to Verizon.

I took mine in to the verizon store, and the reps said that it was normal. I think it's just designed that way.
Definitely normal. My brand new one had a loose power button, and the replacement I got for a different problem, also brand new, has a loose power button.

[Q] Any ideas what to do against the loose and therefore loud hardware buttons?

Hey,
I guess I'm not the only who is annyoed by the wobbly hardware buttons. They are a bit loose and make an annoying sound when the Nexus is in motion (e.g. touching the colume controls with the index fingers when being on the phone; holding the device in one hand and using the upper part of the touchscreens).
Are there any ideas for small hardware hacks that could fix this problem?
Do you think LG/Google will be able to fix it when I send it in for repair?
Am I being pedantic?
You can actually hear the buttons? From arm's length, or even held in a typical "foot from your face" fashion?
Seriously?

Yeah, seriously. If I hold the phone at arm's length in one hand and tap the upper part of the screen (be it in a game or by simply drawing down the status bar) I hear the hardware buttons touching the chassis (kind of a ratling sound) because they simply are way too lose.
Mine barely make a click when I press them. I don't think you're being pedantic.

My buttons don't do that, they are perfectly tight. Depends how much it bothers you - I know that I'd send it back, personally. Although it's cheaper than other top end phones, that doesn't excuse poor build quality, and I'd want a perfect one.
Wow I wish that would have been the case with my device. Yeah, I gave it back today at my local retailer and will wait for the next batch. My Nexus 5 also had a dead pixel which made my decision whether to give it back pretty easy.
The loose buttons seems to be a kinda big problem with the devices in Austria and Germany, it was particularly bad with my device though.

Yep, I'm in the process of deciding how much it annoys me. And if I changed phones, what's to say the new one won't eventually rattle?
