Hi there,
I have the feeling that my microphone sensitivity is way to high - I mean you don't have to talk that loud in order to produce annoying cracks/snaps in every video recording. Is there any way to low the microphone volume level ? Do you face the same problem ?
yep, same here. when making voice calls the microphone level is a little too low for my taste, but when recording videos, mic sensitivity is through the roof. if someone's talking right next to me while i'm recording or if i start talking there's heavy sound distortion going on in the video. i record a lot of paintball matches and most of my (if not all) videos have unusable (corrupted) audio tracks due to either me talking or loud backgound noises.
/edit:
i uploaded a sample video... don't mind what's going on there, we were testing our newly bought sup-air paintball field for the first time, even though we were only halfway done preparing everything ;D
Sample Video @ YouTube
you're right, especially with video recording, a single light wind when recording outside and all the sound is bad
I took very nice HD videos of my holidays, but for most of them all you hear is a stressing noise due to the wind in the microphone.........and the wind was light, the usual light wind on a beach
This is exactly what I been saying. I'm not a HTC bashed but their promo gave the impression video sound quality would be impressive.

Yes, everybody has this problem. The mic gain is set too high during stereo-recording, resulting in clipping, especially when close to the sound-source. Still not solved in 2.3.4 either. I don't think it's a hardware problem, but a settings problem. It is much less problematic when recording in mono.

Hi,
This is exactly what I'm experiencing, thanks for uploading it ! It is really strange nobody shared this issue before on any forum. At first I thought my device is damaged or something. Anyway it is good to hear there is a little chance they will fix it by software upgrade. What I can suggest is to simply create a support ticket request to HTC demanding to have it solved. If more people will complain about it maybe they will do something to fix this.
Yeah, they really need to fix it. They were really touting the stereo sounding recording as an important feature on the phone. Does anyone know if any custom ROMs can fix it?

Exactly... For a while I thought my device was damaged until I saw others complaining too. It sounds like it is due to poorly adjusted noise cancelling. Stock voice recorder makes horrible recordings, too. You have to speak unusually loud to get your voice recorded. It also affects applications like Soundhound: nothing gets recognized unless the source is really loud.
One of the most terrible camera issue to date..
The focus function as it is known is useful to catch a better image and video quality, however due to the fact that it makes a horrible clicking noise while recording a video makes the camera a complete nuisance, having said that, with the most video that you'll shot with the loud clicking noise recorded into the audio stream thanks to the dual microphone is not as enjoyable as spending the amount of money on a tablet that doesn't meet software and hardware quality that the Asus buyers are looking for, yea a marketing company is more best at being a liar than bring the best available device to the market. Not to mention its customer services...
Good one ASUS, for making a substandard product!
Wait...what? Can anyone confirm that they have a clicking sound? This sounds like a hardware defect.
jeeze, with all these issues being mentioned, im no longer worried about J&R putting my device on back order.
these issues should be posted on their FB page so they can become aware of them.

Yeah, all the reports are not exactly good for the inner atmosphere. I only have the I/O issues though, and haven't heard a clicking sound yet from the camera...
The only thing I would hardly touch with a loooooooooooooooooong stick is damn Facebook. Shame that companies nowadays only pay slight attention to their customers, and then only when they post to FB.

I've two units here that "press to focus" make clicking noise while recording.
And it is actually very loudly recorded into the video.
So if no one else has the problem, it will have to be returned.

I have paid specific attention now (and have access to my unit), and it does it too. I use ProCamera, which normally provide the option to turn off the shutter sound (that's what it is actually called -- at first, I thought you were referring to a bad fit in your casing or something). Alas, that option doesn't work with the TF700, as I still get shutter sound even when that option is enabled.
It sounds like all TF700s will have this.

By the way -- with the inherent risk of parroting myself over and over again till everyone in here is sick and tired of it -- I am sure that custom ROMs will fix this issue, as they did with the SGS2. I discovered some years ago that, in some countries, it is actually prescribed by law that a digital camera must make itself known to subjects with distinctive sound when taking a photograph (to prevent unconsented picturing of individuals), so it might have to do with legisation rather than a poor design decision in itself. But in the end, it still is a poor design decision. A lot of people hate it, though, so it probably won't be the issue waiting longest in the queue.
Just tested this myself, and I can confirm that every time you click to focus during a video recording there's a small clicking noise. And it gets recorded very loud in the actual video. This does not seem like a sound that's added in for legal reasons or whatever. It sounds like a mechanical noise from the camera itself. E.g. no easy fix with the wonders of custom ROMs.
Here's a short clip I just did clearly showing the issue:
I just tested it and wow the sound is bad!
But on the other hand, I don't think is a huge problem since I think the auto focus does a great job, and and it's not making that sound when it auto focuses.

wow, holy crap that sucks... good thing I probably wont be using the camera for anything beyond scanning bar codes and stuff. XD
I'm not quite sure, but when I had the Transformer, I thought there was an Option in the Camer App for the clicking sound, which you could disable.
ATM I can't look it up by my self, but I will have a look tomorrow if I can disable it on my Tablet.
I just found that option in the camera app, but as stated earlier the sound comes from the mechanics itselve when you manually touch the screen to focus. I the option in the app is only for the software shutter sound.
I wonder why this didn't come out in those Apple friendly reviews of the 700???
Your models seem to have come out before the official release. Perhaps these are early test or "beta" - maybe these and other glitches are being worked out and thats why so long 2c the release???
Just thinkin out loud.
Maybe because it's a very specific problem that is not noticible in everyday use, so the reviewers didn't check for it?
I like that the people in your this forum is testing and reporting stuff they find but it's also important that it's not blown out of preporsons. If I hadn't read this post I've never would have noticed this "problem" simply because I never had the need to manually focus the camera wile recording videos.
Hey guys. Im going to a hard rock concert on Sun and Im wondering what would be the best settings to use with the camera. Im gonna stick the phone on airplane mode to save the battery.

I'm not sure but I think the video files have a time/size limit. You'll have to strike a good balance of video quality vs quantity. Who are you going to see?
Make sure you turn off the "auto-upload" feature of Dropbox and Google+. Once upon a time my videos kept just stopping recording on me and it was G+ trying to do something with it.
I ended up not going but it was to see Slash ft. Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators.

Lol I just made a post about the camera on another thread. I find low light video recording fairly mediocre on the One X because the auto-focus causes the phone to go in and out of focus constantly.

Someone did audio from the Detroit show, it's up on Dimeadozen. Haven't seen any video yet.
My concern wouldn't necessarily be the video, it would be the audio.
Most rock concerts are loud enough to drown out microphones. If you don't have a way to dampen the sound, there's a good chance all you'll be left with is unusable audio.

I was more thinking the microphone may be too localized to get decent sound. Obviously depends on how loud the music is, the size of the venue and where the OP is standing. But normally, sounds not in the immediate vicinity of phone hardly even get recorded. I took video of my kid singing, from maybe 30 feet away, and you can't even hear it on the recording.
But I've also been to concerts where my ears were still ringing in the morning! So those probably would have been plenty loud enough . . .
Hey i got my nexus 5 a month ago. I updated it to 4.4.2 . I noticed that when i record videos in a "quiet background" , when i play them i got some wierd sound. Any ideas what the problem might be? Is it the noise cancellation software?
Thank you in advance
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2562359
the problem is very common. for now the only idea i discovered is to swap the microphones using another camera app (e.g. snap camera)
Thank you for you reply!
Okay, so this is a software issue ? or not 100% sure?

I am shocked that this isn't being discussed more. I am convinced that a huge amount of devices are affected.
Check this group discussion: http://goo.gl/tZ2aXC
I'm pretty sure it is software-related; there was a voice recording app that had an option of disabling echo cancellation. When chosen, recordings were perfect. (the app has since been updated and does not have this option any more).
I love Snap Camera, and using the "Use Alternate Mic" option does help, although it's only a slightly helpful fix. Still not perfect.
This issue is making me insane, on top of absolutely furious. I am completely pissed off with this.
To add insult to injury, after the update to 4.4.1., now taking video in low light is like just taking video of pure black inky darkness. Unbelievable.
I'm currently cruising Craigslist looking for someone who might want to swap their LG G2 for this piece of s**t.
Hi,
how is the loudspeaker quality for people who already own the phone?
For me the speakers are not that great. Especially the top one in the earpiece. Calls aren't that great and listening to voice messages or even videos and music is just ok.
I get scratching in the top one pretty early. It depends on the audio quality/source but sometimes it already scratches around 60% of max volume. Especially in calls and voice messages.
It sound very good. Less bass then my s21U, but still ok. Calls are very ok too.
So no scratching for you?
I have got an S20 here and it definitely has a better sound quality with less distortion/scratching...
I was quite impressed. Especially in flex mode when both speakers face forward. Definitely one of the highlights of this phone if you ask me.
So no scratching when listening to voice mails on higher volumes? Just tried video and there the quality is fine. It is voices where my speaker struggles.
The sound Quality if better (subjectively) than my S21+, which I traded in. Less tinny and no distortion so far on loudspeaker call in flex mode.
So in my experience the speakers especially the one on the top is worst than the ones of the S20 which is sad.
One thing I noticed in addition to the bad sound quality is that the speaker grill of the earpiece doesn't cover the 3 holes completely. I am able to look through the holes. The grill only covers a part of the holes. Haven't seen this before. Can anybody confirm this or do I indeed have a faulty product?
I will try to describe this as best I can and you can decide if this is the same thing or if yours appears to be missing parts.
I have the three holes. Inside them, there is what looks like plastic coming from the top that covers about half of the opening. If I angle the phone to see into the gap, there is another cover under it.

Ok, I guess than it's supposed to be like that. Looks a bit weird to me.
How is the sound quality on your end? The quality itself is ok for me, what annoys me is the distortion I get pretty early around 60-70% of max volume depending on the audio. Especially calls, video calls and voice messages get distorted really quickly. Video and music mostly seem to be fine.

Feedback is appreciated . Voice messages in Whatsapp for example, same for Whatsapp and Duo video calls and phone calls as well... Distortion and scratching in the upper range coming out of the earpiece/upper speaker.
I have to decide if I keep the device until Saturday. It would be great if a few more people who own the phone could give some feedback regarding the loudspeaker of the phone during voice and video calls and voice messages
Sounds defective. Just finished testing and it was not only clear, but loud. I know with previous phones, I couldn't hear a thing at any less than one step below the max volume. I had this one at half and it was just as loud. If you happened to start at max, it's possible a speaker blew out. The thing they never tell you is that they aren't truly meant to run at that volume for anything more than a minute or two.

I have heard rumors the speakers are separate between the two, but I'm not sure.
I know Samsung tends to send phones to be repaired over replaced, even when it just released last week. Hopefully they don't give you any trouble if you decide to flat out return it, though.

Yeah the service is ridiculous. I love Android and use it for years for various reasons. But these encounters with bad service drag my mind towards apple. I already contacted Samsung. They offered an exchange. But I have to send in my flip first. As this is currently my only phone due to sending my S20 in for the trade-in I will not be able to do that. I am using the phone with dual sim for private and business purposes. I will try to force Samsung to send me a new one prior to sending mine back. If they don't accept I will withdraw my order and get something else. The trade-in might get me into trouble as it seems. Will never purchase over Samsung directly again. Never had issues with Amazon or apple...
