stock browser... give it a try... - Samsung Galaxy S7 Themes, Apps, and Mods

hi all,
don't know if this has been mentioned before (if so my apologies) but just wanted to share this
I've been a bit frustrated with the browsing speed of my S7, I've always used chrome (mainly for integration with lastpass and just because... well, it's chrome right?) but was never impressed with the speed.
Tried a bunch of other browsers (dolphin, maxthon, UC, firefox, ...) you name it.... same feeling...
A friend of mine has an iphone 7, comparison of browser speed was... humbling... Even to the point of considering switching to an iphone!
Started googling about this and somewhere someone on some site mentioned in the comments section of an article about how great iphone's are compared to android that the samsung stock browser (version 4+) in combination with an adblock is "all you need".
To be honest, until that moment I had never even used the stock browser... It's stock so it can't be good right?
Started using the stock browser in combination with "adblock fast" and never looked back... this browser is amazing, did the same tests again with my friends iphone 7 and where before the S7 was slower every time, now it was fastest in about 80% of the cases!
No lastpass integration but the fingerprint login built into the browser works on most of the sites I've encountered so far. Not perfect but the speed makes up for everything.
So here it is, I don't want to start a browser-discussion (everybody has his/her own preference) but for the people who never used the stock browser you might want to give it a try and see how it works out for you...
Cheers
B

It also beats Google Chrome in one of the best benchmark tests - Vellamo Mobile Benchmark, and provides a much better feeling of use than Chrome and any other browser. Scrolling is so much better.

Stock browser with Disconnect Pro is working pretty well. I'm using ir since S6 and I'm happy.

I would like to use stock browser but I need bookmark sync with chrome and this is not supported
Gesendet von meinem SM-G930F mit Tapatalk

Bookmarks sync via Samsung account works. Install samsung sync addon for Chrome on PC and after starting sync your stock Android browser will sync bookmarks tab. Of course, you have to login Samsung account on the phone before you do all this.
Btw, stock browser is good but needs text formatting .

Which version of the samsung browser are you guys on? Im still seeing 4.0.10-53 on google play, i have the 930w8 if it matters and nothing on samsung's galaxy app store. I had to download version 5+ from apkmirror

I'm using 5.0.30-40 with adblock for samsung internet browser and its fast!

The 5.0 version is installed on Android N...

What's new in v5.0?

According to ApkMirror descriptions, 5.0.30-13 is for Android 4.4+, 4.0.30-43 is for Android 5.0+. I think it is a bit confusing. Both have the same variant date, which is even more confusing.

Do you have an "exit" option on the stock browser ? Screen print from my S4 attached - I don't have it on my S7 G930W8 ?
Not sure the app actually closes ?

Dolphin Browser HD v5.0 is released to Market. Guys

HI, Dolphin Browser HD v5.0 has released finally to the Android market. I have been waiting for such a long time, although that I have used their 4 betas.
I can notice that they have made much progress in the UI, settings and the performance (fix many bugs).
First, I like the smooth tab bar. It’s better to let the tab bar stay on top and hide the address. But it’s ok now. If themes are installed, the bar color are changed. That’s great for me.
Second, they have done much work on the Quick menu. Bookmarks, history, settings, add-ons, themes and gesture are included in the Quick menu. The background color has kind of texture.
Last but not least, I can successfully browser most websites without FC or hanging. It means that their performance has been much improved. It almost closes to perfect.
So download it, I’m sure you wouldn’t regret. LOL.
Been using the betas and now the final myself.
Bravo Dolphin, great work.
I don't browse the web that much on my phone but from my experiences so far with betas, this is the best browser out there at the moment.

Dude, i have seen your post just now. what's new in your post is not the new features in HD5.0. they already exist in HD4.6.1.
but thank you to remind me.
I just downloaded it. I've been using the dolphin mini browser for a few months now. I hope it's better.

not as fast as th trusted opera mini, and it's ability to sync bookmarks with any phone I use. I know on opera mini the speed compromises the quality, but opera is way faster than any other browser in my opinion.

I loved Opera for its speed and usability, however I never liked how it handled flash content, or the fact that it doesn't.
Not always having the default web site was a negative for me as well.

thats why im on mini.
I switch between Opera, Opera Mini, Dolphin and Dolphin mini all the time. Just can't make up my mind.
I am liking HD 5.0 though.
Sweet gonna go try this browser
The biggest change is there is no google inserted Ads any more,
There is no need to buy Dolphin license to block Ads.
Well, This browser is really better then the ones that comes normally with android?
And if yes, what special does it have?

[Q] Best Browser? Vote Now (poll)

There is a thread on "Best Browser" here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=936576
But looking for a poll that sums the data, and couldn't find one.
Searching "browser" in Android Market returns 12 choices. (28 Sep 2011)
Vote for your current favorite and feel free to reply in the comments with stories, or reasons.
Miren quite underrated, but packed full of goodness.
X-Scope PRO no 1 for me for sure, i also like Miren and Opera but always use X-Scope.
I was using Miren happily until the last update to Dolphin HD. Now it's just pulled slightly ahead. Most of the Android browsers are great in their own way. it's hard to go wrong with almost any of them. Good poll idea, OP.
Stock is fine with me otherwise I really enjoy Dolphin Mini. They are all good haha
Just to clarify, maybe HTC modifies the stock browser, but have grown annoyed with it not maintaining open windows state. And refreshing the current page upon returning.
Thanks to all for answers and votes.

I've tried them all, but lately I've been using Baidu beta. I can't change the settings because they're all in chinese but the browser is fast as hell. Ninesky Browser kicks ass too and is more or less unknown at the moment. I recommend that if you haven't tried Ninesky yet you should. It's a phenomenal browser that looks like Google Chrome.

I love Opera Mobile but I hate how slow it starts up.. guess I'll check out this Dolphin HD.
Opera Mini and Opera Mobile are the only browsers that scroll smoothly on every website. So my vote is for Opera Mobile.

Browser reflow

Sorry if this is a bad place to post this question.
With Android 4.4 they have changed the default webview to chromium and now the default browser does not reflow on zoom. I have also tested other browsers based on the internal webview (Lightning and Tint) and they are also unable to reflow on zoom now. Unfortunately, Firefox also dropped reflow recently (WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY FF 24).
I don't remember if chrome ever supported it.
Opera does support reflow!
My questions are
a) Is there any chance that reflow can be fixed in the stock browser by modders?
b) How do you all browse the web without reflow? This is what xda-developers looks like in chrome... Some posts have the font boosted to a readable size but most of them remain tiny and I have to pinch in to zoom then pan across from left to right because it doesn't reflow. Before this "upgrade" the stock browser rendered every site I visit beautifully

The change from AOSP webview to the Chrome one is the most **** part of the KitKat changelog.
I really don't understand how people surf the web without text reflow on a small screen. Opera is my saviour! Perhaps I just have poor eyesight.

OK, so I'm not the only one going crazy here
Is there anything we can do? Opera is using the Blink layout engine which is to my understanding similar to (a fork of) Chromium. This makes me think that it is feasible to make wrapping work in the new AOSP browser.
ps. Firefox 23 has wrapping and is available from,
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mobile/releases/
Unfortunately for me I can't handle their scrolling. The inertia gives me a headache

I've never used Chrome until after 4.4+ and even then very little. But if I remember right it never did support text reflow. I even went back to 4.3 on my N7 for a couple weeks after the update to 4.4 until I could figure out what to use to replace the AOSP browser. I was a longtime, diehard user of the AOSP browser, effing google screwed that up. So... I've been using Dolphin Browser for a while now and it works great on both my N5 & N7. Has text reflow, scrolling works very well and flash works if you use a modified version of the Flash Player.

Dolphin has reflow because it uses it's own rendering engine. Vanilla android should have it. There was no reason to deprecate the feature from AOSP Browser.
As someone else posted in the google code thread :-

I agree! I was Extremely disappointed to see what happened with the AOSP browser!
The trouble is there are so many goggle/chrome fanbois that refuse to see what is wrong right in front of them, and keep posting how wonderful chrome is... that any pressure to make goggle coders actually produce a good browser falls flat...... or its, horror at the thought, goggle employed shills? because to me it makes no sense whatsoever to be blind to the massive faults of chrome.
basically they can't code a good browser. so resort to breaking others... didn't Microsoft get badly done legally for much less than that?
Dolphin broke my AOSP browser addiction...
I was amazed by dolphin at first. The speed. Flash player. But then it started to become a problem. Just would not load pages. Can't be bothered to fix it

Can someone mod the Samsung Browser?

I have the Verizon S7 Edge so don't have the Samsung browser pre-installed.
You can't install the apk either as the app will force close unless it is placed in the system/app folder. (Which I can't because there is no root)
Is there anyone that can or is willing to mod the Samsung browser so that it can be sideloaded?
I'd just use another browser dude. I use lightning+ it's lightweight, has ad blocking, has amoled mode, and allows you to change rendering mode (I use inverted grayscale for text heavy sites like news and forums).

The Samsung browser feels much more optimized than chrome and has built in ad blocking so it's been great. But I also sent hate how new tabs open in the foreground so annoying.

Cool story bro.
I like this browser, other than the fact on my Vodafone UK S7E, I can't stop it from using Vodafone's webpage as my homepage. No matter what I set it to in the settings it gets ignored. I removed it using Titanium Backup and looked for it on Playstore but it doesn't show up. I had to download it from somewhere else in the end, reinstalled and now it works fine.
I love to give it a try if I can migrate / sync my Chrome bookmarks / browsing history over.

Samsung Internet for Android browser for Verizon Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge

The wait is finally over!

I have (I started a thread about the OTA here when I first got the update, in fact), and the Play Store link definitely says incompatible. Believe me, I've tried it multiple times since it was updated to the version 4 browser.
I know the Play Store description says S7 and S7 Edge models are supported, but it is not open for downloading on at least the Verizon branded units (or not for some of us, at least).

What I did was had someone with a Verizon S6 device, share me the link from their Play Store to the Samsung Internet app via text message. Then I went to the Messages app and opened the link where a unique window popped up and took me to the Play Store where the Install button was enabled for me to get the app.
Same here, took the update, still a no go in the play store. I did install that apk that was posted and it worked just fine...then got eskeered that it had some back door to china and deleted it .
Funny thing is when I installed the apk, then went to the play store it still showed as incompatible but installed.
Worked for me. Been using it for 4 or 5 days now

I need this apk.
I provided a link to the apk up top in the OP. Maybe it'll work for those that weren't able to install the browser from the link to the Play Store.
Searched in the play store and found and installed the browser without issue. BTW, there is also an ad block plug in for this browser.
I also had no problems finding it on the Play store. Installed with no problems. I wasn't able to install it last week as it gave me an incompatible device error but it works now!
Btw, I'm still on the stock version. Haven't taken any of the updates.

Yup working for me now to really really weird
Now that Chrome has been updated with patch notes listing speed improvements, I find Chrome to be as smooth as Samsung's browser, but with a better interface, search, faster scrolling, and the benefits of access to years worth of saved passwords and shared history. As far as I can tell, the only thing Internet has over Chrome is the adblock compatibility.

I agree you've summarized some significant advantages that Chrome offers.
But in addition to the adblock feature, here are a few things that are better with Samsung's app IMO:
- Secret Mode can persist an entirely separate password/fingerprint gated internet browsing experience, including history, website passwords, bookmarks, and locally saved web content - much more robust functionality than Chrome's completely temporal incognito mode.
- Use of fingerprint input can be optionally required on a site by site basis before the browser retrieves your saved password for a website.
- While Chrome can be configured to offer up a reader mode for article-formatted web pages, it is not on by default, and Google has slowly reduced its availability and functionality over time. Additionally, even when configured, its ability to correctly detect content that could benefit from reader mode is poor, meaning you can't easily use it even when it would be useful.
The Samsung Browser's reader mode is on by default, and while detection is not perfect, I've found the reader icon is made available for significantly more content than Chrome's.
Also, Chrome's reader mode announces its availability by placing an obnoxious pop up banner at the bottom of eligible web pages, whereas the Samsung Browser's reader icon appears as a small non-intrusive reading icon at the left of the URL in the address bar, where God intended it to be.

I've been using NoChromo as an answer to the Chrome with AdBlock concern. This may work for others as well. I couldn't give up the link sharing of Chrome across my multiple desktops.

While chrome's overall smoothness has improved in recent versions, it still lags quite a bit when pinching to zoom.
I use Samsung Internet over Chrome mainly because of the Reader functionality it has. It helps with reading articles withing having to deal with unnecessary info on the original web pages. Also, the new functionalities Samsung included are pretty useful, such as the fingerprint log-in and just a better overall UI. Simple and to the point.
Any way to remove some junk bookmarks? I see the ones I removed comes back after a reboot, and then there are some that you can't ever remove.
