Sorry if this is a bad place to post this question.
With Android 4.4 they have changed the default webview to chromium and now the default browser does not reflow on zoom. I have also tested other browsers based on the internal webview (Lightning and Tint) and they are also unable to reflow on zoom now. Unfortunately, Firefox also dropped reflow recently (WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY FF 24).
I don't remember if chrome ever supported it.
Opera does support reflow!
My questions are
a) Is there any chance that reflow can be fixed in the stock browser by modders?
b) How do you all browse the web without reflow? This is what xda-developers looks like in chrome... Some posts have the font boosted to a readable size but most of them remain tiny and I have to pinch in to zoom then pan across from left to right because it doesn't reflow. Before this "upgrade" the stock browser rendered every site I visit beautifully

The change from AOSP webview to the Chrome one is the most **** part of the KitKat changelog.
I really don't understand how people surf the web without text reflow on a small screen. Opera is my saviour! Perhaps I just have poor eyesight.

No you don't lol it ridiculous. Yesterday I found myself zooming in and panning the webpage as I read it was a pain in the ass. Lets not go backward Google.

OK, so I'm not the only one going crazy here
Is there anything we can do? Opera is using the Blink layout engine which is to my understanding similar to (a fork of) Chromium. This makes me think that it is feasible to make wrapping work in the new AOSP browser.
ps. Firefox 23 has wrapping and is available from,
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mobile/releases/
Unfortunately for me I can't handle their scrolling. The inertia gives me a headache
Hey guys, if you can spare a minute, please star this issue at the google bug tracker.

Unfortunately, so far it seems like the devs are saying its "working as intended".

I've never used Chrome until after 4.4+ and even then very little. But if I remember right it never did support text reflow. I even went back to 4.3 on my N7 for a couple weeks after the update to 4.4 until I could figure out what to use to replace the AOSP browser. I was a longtime, diehard user of the AOSP browser, effing google screwed that up. So... I've been using Dolphin Browser for a while now and it works great on both my N5 & N7. Has text reflow, scrolling works very well and flash works if you use a modified version of the Flash Player.

Dolphin has reflow because it uses it's own rendering engine. Vanilla android should have it. There was no reason to deprecate the feature from AOSP Browser.
As someone else posted in the google code thread :-

I agree! I was Extremely disappointed to see what happened with the AOSP browser!
The trouble is there are so many goggle/chrome fanbois that refuse to see what is wrong right in front of them, and keep posting how wonderful chrome is... that any pressure to make goggle coders actually produce a good browser falls flat...... or its, horror at the thought, goggle employed shills? because to me it makes no sense whatsoever to be blind to the massive faults of chrome.
basically they can't code a good browser. so resort to breaking others... didn't Microsoft get badly done legally for much less than that?
Dolphin broke my AOSP browser addiction...
I was amazed by dolphin at first. The speed. Flash player. But then it started to become a problem. Just would not load pages. Can't be bothered to fix it

It is actually better than the stock browser in my opinion, the only reason I didn't want to switch to it was.the lack of multi-touch.
Very slick interface.
I find that it doesn't load certain pages properly.

Lack of multi-touch is a non-issue for me. The lack of kinetic scrolling, however...
I'll pass,default browser is much better.+ doesn't work well for xda-developers.

Right, but 90% page compression more than makes up for that, as does speed dial for bookmarks.
I have been an Opera Mini fan since the days of my HTC Excalibur and WinMo 6 stuck on EDGE on T-Mobile.
On HSDPA, pages load in a snap, MUCH faster than stock or Dolphin browsers, and when I switch to EDGE in certain areas on my train commute home, its nice to still be able to cruise the web without a hiccup.
But rather than ***** about lack of multi-touch, you could *gasp* email the developer and suggest they add that, since this is a BETA, and there's still time for them to integrate MT before the release of the full product.
Also, kinetic scrolling works for me.
IDK it took me a long time to scroll down to the N1 section. In the stock browser I can do it in 1 swipe.

Check the settings. There may be an option for # of lines to scroll per swipe. I could be wrong as I haven't looked in this version, but I remember that being there for Opera Mini 4 on WinMo.

Nah, there's no option like that in this version.
The pictures were misplaced and all over the place. The words on the web pages were misplaced and all over the place. The images were very poor quality. Had no multi touch. To sum things up, I uninstalled this browser almost instantaneously. Nuff said.

Go to settings and change image quality from "low" to "medium" or "high". "Low" is great for edge. If you have a decent 3G connection, use "medium".

Considering this is still beta and it loads big pages about 2 -3x faster than the default browser, I'm quite excited. Can't wait for the final and firefox mobile to come.
Well the app does say BETA. I am personally blown away by the speed of this browser. Yes, it does such that it doesn't have Multi-Touch etc etc, but I'm very sure it will come in the next few releases. Instead of crying about broken features on a BETA product..don't uninstall the app..report the bugs and help make it something very high quality.
Anyone else having problems getting it to work?
It launches then hangs for a while "Installing" with the progress bar not moving, then a black screen with message "Unable to connect to the internet".

Lol, but wouldn't that require not being a self-important ****?
I totally agree with you.
Opera Mini 5 beta is my new default browser. Eff multi-touch. I can't stand waiting for a browser to load a simple web page when I'm on H or 3G. Opera pulls em down at lightning speeds.
Speed > MT any day.
Lately, it seems like there has been an influx of Android goodies from China. Some of this stuff is pretty amazing, like the MIUI ROM. A couple of weeks ago, I discovered the "MIUI" -aka Charming, aka Miren- Browser and was stoked to get that thing in a translated form. It is speedy and has a pretty cool interface. You can find a number of posts on XDA (here, here, and here among them).
Everyone I have talked to who has used the Miren browser has been jazzed about how much better it is than the traditional options (stock, Dolphin, Fennec/FF, Opera, SkyFire, Xscope, etc.) and I too have been impressed.
Yesterday, I discovered yet another browser, this one also from China and I have to say, so far it has blown me away! I have been preaching on the Miren browser for a week, but This new UC browser is simply the best mobile browser I have used. I have only had it for about twelve hours, so I don't know what the full capabilities are or if there are any major bugs, but so far, I am incredibly impressed.
It can be a little tricky to locate and I am hesitant to post the apk here as it appears to work with hundreds of handsets in different formats. i will post the link where I found it and you can do your own research on which version to grab. This is the English language site (on a side note, these guys are PROS! Just check out the flawless translations in the various languages and you can see that they take immense pride in their product and work. You'd be hard pressed to find other Android devs who have the time or skill to provide such clean sites in multiple languages. Provides me as an end user with a lot of confidence in the final product.)
UC Browser
Pretty amazing specs includes all the typical options, some less prevelant ones and a few atypical inclusions such as built in File Manager, Night Mode lighting and super fast URL autocomplete. The only shortcoming so far is I can't find anyway to get pinch to zoom on this thing, but I am submitting a query to the devs on that.
Edit: Thanks to jpyounis1 for figuring out the pinch-to-zoom settings!
To enable pinch to zoom change user agent to "web ua" then browse mode to "zoom mode" and ur done. Now you have full pages with intelligent fit.
Edit2: Unfortunately, so far as I can tell, no flash support in 7.2. For now I will have to stick with Miren and Skyfire as my main browsers and keep UC as an alternate until 7.4 is available in English.
And it's pretty too...

interesting... ill try it out.
thanks for the post
the "built-in" facebook scared me, security issues and all that :O
other than that this looks really sleek and nice, gonna try it out for a few days.
I was pretty psyched by the prospect of this browser, but if they don't have the ability to integrate pinch-to-zoom it might be a bust. That would be a shame because in all other respects this browser is superior to most others.
I guess I will wait and see what response i get from the devs.
Yea I really like this browser. Looks great and its ui is superior. I think its better than miren browser and is my new default. I think between this and firefox take the cake.

Opera is located in Norway. It has a privacy policy matching european standards. Still I wouldn't feel completely comfortable to have all my browser traffic redirected through them, but that's a matter of personal taste as long as current standards are met.
I used UC as my main browser as a Nokia user...love it. They must have recently added the new platforms because I don't recall a WM version.
Indeed, it's Android!
Sharing content??
How do you system share content with other apps in Android?! IE: get it on the system share list?
Or.. how do you email content out.
I have to in part manage my information that way.
Thanks
Tim
wow nice find love the ui!
is there any way to get flash working on this browser?
It is definitely well polished, but there are 3 things that stop me making this my default
1. No quick access to address bar, in fullscreen mode
2. Share options of webpage are extremely limited
3. No true speed dial or easily configurable bookmark list for start page.

EDIT oops, looks like you guys already figure out how to pinch to zoom.

Trouble with this configuration is that it becomes the same speed as every other browsers on Android... cept Opera Mini of course.

Much as I love the stock browser on Honeycomb (especially the bookmark sync), it has become incredibly laggy in places, especially entering into text fields on forums etc. I tried most of the other browsers on the market, and at the moment the new Dolphin HD beta is working the best for me. You can find it here:
http://home.dolphin-browser.com/tunny/Download.htm
Pages load quickly, scrolling is smoother, text entry less painful. What browsers are other people out there using? Is stock working OK for you or are you using another one? Would love to find the best browser for android tablets.

Works good as long as you don't try to edit the favourites bar, it crashes
Yeah crashes a fair bit. I've not found a browser yet which works properly with the XDA site. It's strangely laggy, and virtually unusable via the eee pad.
android has always had problems with some forums, xda and androidforums for example :/
I had been using Dolphin HD browser, as the stock browser is a bit flakey with mobile view even using the about:debug.
I've since switched to Firefox 4 with the phony add on. Works great. Only drawback on that one is Flash isn't working yet.
It's not the browser that's causing the input lag, it's the ASUS keyboard. Swap it for the stock Android one and you'll see the difference straight away.
incorrect.. laggy whatever keyboard used.. I've tried it with Asus, stock android, Flext9 by nuance and Thumb Keyboard.. all laggy.. viewing and posting using Firefox with the same keyboards is much better
This was posted in another thread but I'll put it here too. If you want to stop the lag for the XDA forums then change the style option bottom left of the page to 'classic' instead of 'XDA 2010'. Seems to run fine in any browser then.
I've gone back to the HC keyboard with the stock browser now after trying out Dolphin HD. It's got its faults but works well most the time.
I'm using firefox because it has a sessionsaver... all of them crash occasionally.
Sure I read some where if you use dolphin and contact the developer they will send you the apk file for the tablet version of dolphin HD

I heard opera browser is one of the best browsers for the EPTD, there's a you tube video showing it silk smooth on the galaxy tab 10.1v like ipad 2 performance, no lag at all
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdGRa_QvyF0&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL
I'm using the Dolphin HD browser and after a few niggles re. bookmarks I am now really enjoying using it. No crashes or lags. Really like using the different gestures which can be modified to whatever you want. e.g. draw a letter "B" (roughly) to get bookmarks bar. Plus a lot of different add-ons and themes. Deffo my no. 1 browser at moment.

Oh god, my eyes!!! I'm not sure eliminating lag is worth looking at this theme
HI, Dolphin Browser HD v5.0 has released finally to the Android market. I have been waiting for such a long time, although that I have used their 4 betas.
I can notice that they have made much progress in the UI, settings and the performance (fix many bugs).
First, I like the smooth tab bar. It’s better to let the tab bar stay on top and hide the address. But it’s ok now. If themes are installed, the bar color are changed. That’s great for me.
Second, they have done much work on the Quick menu. Bookmarks, history, settings, add-ons, themes and gesture are included in the Quick menu. The background color has kind of texture.
Last but not least, I can successfully browser most websites without FC or hanging. It means that their performance has been much improved. It almost closes to perfect.
So download it, I’m sure you wouldn’t regret. LOL.
Been using the betas and now the final myself.
Bravo Dolphin, great work.
I don't browse the web that much on my phone but from my experiences so far with betas, this is the best browser out there at the moment.

Premium Paid-For Android Browser Now Free
Updated 18. July 2011 - 17:43 by r.schifreen
Dolphin, the gesture-based web browser for the Android platform, has ditched its $4.99 price tag on the premium version, having received a nice chunk of venture capital funding. The premium version is now free, and the previous free version, which was ad-supported, is no longer available.
Dolphin is a web browser for all Android phones and tablets. Among its unique features is a gesture recorder that allows you to create custom shortcuts. So, for example, by drawing a W on your screen, you could go straight to your work email.
To download the Dolphin browser, the easiest option is to browse the Android market from your device.

And the good thing about this is that the market will update your other version to the premium version.
I didn't realise this new version was a premium one in a previous life . I just thought they gave the previous one a new logo and maybe added one or two new features. So what does the 'premium' version bring to the table that you couldn't do with the old one? I've always had the gesture-based bookmarking of web pages, for instance. Or was the old 'premium' version more of a donation-powered version, something purely to support the developers?
The old one was ad-supported, with ads in the bookmark bar.
Dolphin keeps crashing on me every so often, though, on my stock Transformer. That needs to be fixed.
Can't believe no body has linked it.

Only default browser for now. Dolphin used to have it enabled but it was removed for some odd reason. I talked to dolphin hd and they replyed there focusing on phones for now.

It seems to be Dolphin HD with a very slight UI difference... not sure why they hyped this so much.

Working quite well! Typing in browser is responsive. Might just become my choice for daily use over opera

Uhm, I still get input lag especially on big forums like XDA. I'm not sure if the Dolphin team changed their webkit like Opera did.
Can someone please post the dolphin pad apk. Thank you

sucks
No way to sync with chrome bookmarks (which is not the same as google bookmarks) and no bookmarks bar. Too much stuff as addons. Bad, uninstalled.

Im not sure if its an HC or a transformer problem but for D:HD when i used the swipe action meus on the left and right it would stretch the page or compress it until i scrolled and it reformatted the page. Didn't do it on my evo so i assumed it was an HC problem and hence stopped used Dolphin after i submitted a bug report and screenshots. In the pad version they made the menus in to overlays instead of physically shifting the screen content which seems to have solved the problem. That was the only problem for me with the HD version so now i'm extremely pleased with the pad beta and have actually made it my default browser (i used to keep it unassigned so i can choose between Opera, firefox, dolphin and stock depending on what i needed to do, pain in the ass)
