VR support - Huawei Mate 9 Questions & Answers

hi guys, does this phone support VR?

Only the Porsche Design and the Mate 9 Pro are Daydream ready. Mate 9 doesnt have the AMOLED screen required for VR.

But, in the setting, there is something call "daydream", it can be turn on/off...?

I'm afraid that's just a feature that displays pictures/photos whilst your phone charges. Like a digital photo frame if you like.

I tried the other day with son glasses and it worked for me...

AMOLED isn't required for Daydream.
This Mate 9 is supposed to be one of the first US phones Daydream capable, from a 2nd or 3rd party.
Pretty sure it just needs an update
I'm going to edit this as it seems the Mate 9 Pro is the one for Daydream VR. Not 100% confirmation though

Not AMOLED, but i read about latency requirements which are a problem for LCD displays.
Gesendet von meinem MHA-L29 mit Tapatalk

True. However it's interesting because the Daydream ready devices are all 1440p so far, that may hold it back.
Most reports I'm reading are that the Huawei Mate 9 pro is the one that will be supported out of the box. Processor and GPU are not what are called into question.
Google released their hardware requirements but the weren't specifications for <ms latency. I agree though AMOLED would have nailed it probably.
Not sure I want a high end display anymore after seeing how well this one runs on 1080p. That being said, I know the Pro has 6 GB RAM. Seeing what 6GB RAM did to OnePlus 3/T , I'm sure it would be phenomenal

Amoled is a must right now because latency and infinite contrast, if dark colour in a LCD is alredy greenish imagine having the screen in front of your eyes. There would be no immersion. The Mate 9 Pro and the Porsche design are certified by Google.

Oneplus 3t or Mate 9 ?

I don't know if a take a Oneplus 3t or a Mate 9 because the price is not the same ><
Screen size also is not same 5.5 vs 5.9!
There is a Mate 9 Pro that rivals the 3T.
Yes but when Mate 9 pro coming out? I don't want a phone that heat, with mate 9 I will be sure that not heat, but oneplus costs so much cheaper ...

Mate 9, better camera ? Looking at the pictures and videos they are pretty similar. For the screen oneplus 3 have Amoled so it's best, the sound on oneplus is best but he heast and the development is going to be not very good given that many people will stay on classic oneplus 3, and finally the home button is physical...The digital fingerprint reader is easier to use at the rear than at the front...but the price difference is really important, and on aliexpress, mate 9 Pro costs 733€ ...
No body have a experience on O+3 ?
I like both but i will always take Mate 9 Pro because of Its amazing UI and Camera

Even when OP3T is cheaper, I think the Mate 9 is worth a try.
I think the main difference here is the size and the battery, because otherwise, both phones are really similar. I was waiting as well for the announcement of the OP3T, but being honest, it disappointed me a lot, because is only a 10% increase in battery and a "slightly" better processor, because 820 and 821 are virtually the same one.
I was expecting some upgrade on screen (QHD) and maybe a new camera (IMX 398), but instead we got nothing and just a price increase, which for me, it's not worth it a lot.
Mate 9 comes with stereo sound, comes with Nougat out of the box, the screen is one of the best in its class, the storage and the RAM are necessarily enough, I don't think someone would ever need more than 3-4GB RAM. Is a matter of taste, if you would ask me 3-4 years ago which one, I would say go with the one who has more development (I had all Nexus), but nowadays, I'm not interested anymore in that and I don't see the need of rooting and installing ROM's, because most of the times the software is really nice and polished. All reviews are speaking really positive about the Mate 9, so I think I will get one, because I miss EMUI and after I sold my GX8, I found out that it has many useful things there.

It shouldn't drain so much the battery, FHD and QHD consumptions are almost nearly identical nowadays.

I bought it from our Huawei retailer in Dubai last Sunday. The Huawei EMUI that is based on Nougat is spot on. I have Pixel Xl in hand right now and I feel there are a lot of features I am missing from my Mate 9. They fixed most of the issues from 4.x.x in 5.
Difference between Mate 9 and 8 is quite huge. Performance almost bumped up to 200% in gaming. CPU perf upped by 30% too. There are reviews floating around if you like the numbers. Screen on Mate 9 is better than M8 in contrast , black levels and speed. Loudspeaker is stereo on Mate 9 compared to bottom firing speaker on Mate 8. It is louder and fuller. Very good for listening sessions at home like internet radio or podcasts. Even it makes your game immersive by covering your ears with wide range of quality stereo sound. I didn't need to use headphones because of how loud and clear they were.
If you like pictures then Mate 9 is excellent in still photography. If you are looking for a quick snapper look somewhere else.

not really. lately Zenfone 3 Deluxe got confirm as daydream ready, and they have just full hd resolution... screen resolution condition was obviously relaxed...
and because cpu & graphic is same in mate 9 & mate 9pro, it would be just marketing decision from huawei......
but whatever... daydream is coming with 7.1, and mate 9 have jsut 7 atm.. so let see later...
Normal Pixel has the same pixel count as the Mate 9.

I'll reiterate what I've said in previous threads.
Resolution might not be the limiting factor for the Mate 9 but latency probably is. I don't believe there is a single Daydream ready phone out there with an LCD display and that's probably because they can't get the latency low enough. AMOLED displays are inherently superior for VR due to its characteristics.

Do you have some study comparing how big difference is in latency? I mean numbers. So it is visible, how much significant it is to latency threshold, Google set for VT... ?

The difference is quite big. The Pixel is measured at 4 ms in both grey to grey and black to white. It also has a VR mode reducing latency further.
The Mate 9 is measured at 30 ms black to white and 57 grey to grey.
Daydream requires 3 ms latency. I don't think Huawei can tune it that much. Maybe they can get it down to 15 ms with some heavy Overdrive but I'm not sure. It still won't be enough. It seems like the LCD displays used in smartphones aren't made with latency in mind. I know you can get desktop monitors in the 4-8 ms range that are also IPS (IPS is the panel type used for all smartphone LCD displays).
Most reviewers don't measure display latencies but some do. That's why it can be difficult to find info on the displays. Most don't even measure color accuracy or anything. They just say something like "the display looks great. A bit cold. Over-saturated" etc etc, so no actual data on it.
Edit: I will note that it's not like Huawei cheaped out or anything. It's the same for other LCD displays. The LG G5 has 24 ms B2W and 41 ms G2G. The HTC 10 has 34 ms B2W and 51 ms G2G. The iPhone 7 has 32 ms B2W and 39 ms G2G.
Just to give some perspective.
AMOLED displays generally have lower latencies. Although looking at the phones like the Moto Z or the S7 Edge - it's not like those have any impressive latency like the Pixel (although still better than any LCD) but I think the latencies are improved through a VR mode like the Pixel because both the Moto Z (which is Daydream ready) and the S7 Edge (Gear VR) work with VR.

Maybe Huawei has a trick up their sleeve that I don't know about, so don't lose hope just yet but maybe try to ask Huawei about whether the regular Mate 9 models will get Daydream? The Pro/Porsche models will definitely get it because they have pretty much already confirmed it and they both use AMOLED displays. So there is nothing preventing those models that I can see, so it's just the regular model that is still up in the air.
I hope Huawei has a solution but I just don't see it. The industry is moving toward AMOLED for most high end models including Apple. I guess Huawei couldn't get a good 6" AMOLED display so they had to put an LCD display in it. I mean people complain about the "small" display on the Pro model, so it seems to be a supply problem. 5.5" is so common that Huawei had a lot of displays to choose from. Custom made displays cost a fortune, so 6" isn't viable.
I have a Mate 9, and can verify it does not work with Daydream. I get a message about an incompatible phone. I had to update a bunch of stuff and tweak some settings, from what came over from my Pixel, but still the message. Perhaps with this update folks speak of, BUT I am fearful it IS as someone explained a latency issue. We'll see hopefully soon after the US launch next month.
Update
Just in case nobody mentioned it yet, the Huawei Mate 9 and Mate 9 Pro are daydream ready, well at least somewhat. Google claims it is daydream ready, but it's up to the OEM to push out the necessary update to make "officially" ready for consumers.

Multiple sites are ignorant people who only copy/paste without reading the news. This is the official web from google: https://vr.google.com/daydream/phones/
what's taking them so long to add just a couple of commands to an xml file on mate 9 pro so it can be activated to be ready for daydream? they already announced it and it's still not compatible. it can be activated by rooting but do we have to resort on doing that just to utilize the feature that's already been announced?

Ok. I've read that the phone would be daydream ready and was hoping for that. It's probably much much better on daydream than 6P but if it's not certified it's a hassle to get everything working.

The display might be the Achilles heel of the regular Mate 9 and I'm not talking about resolution.
It's an IPS display and might not have low enough latency to be Daydream ready. I've yet to see an IPS display with 3 ms latency. And I'm not sure about the low persistence mode either.
Edit: I just checked. The display has 30-60 ms of latency, so unless they can activate some impressive Overdrive, it will not be Daydream ready.
What kind of latency does the pixel got? With 7.1 it's quick alright, 6P with final 7.1.1 feels more or less the same (feels that is... Maybe someone tweaked latency stuff in the 7.1.1 for 6P at least?).
If you do a google there is talk about Mate 9 being certified for Daydream but right obviously not. I can't find anything more specific about it other that some guy said etc. I've ordered the pro model but without Daydream I'll probably pass.
I don't see very much of use for Daydream right now but the development has started and even with a 6P pixel it's pretty good for the about 20 minutes you gets before the phone starts to lag

According to the same tests the XL has a latency of 4 (in both categories). It might be lower when used with VR.
I'm not sure if it's 7.1 itself or Google doing their own proprietary thing but the Pixels at least should have reduced touch latency but that's different from display latency. Android in general needs latency and performance tweaks in my opinion. It's what makes it feel slow. Not all manufacturers recognize this and do something about it.

theres a low persistance and super fast latency mode in the developer settings on the pixel I think that gets triggered when using VR on the pixels
Hopefully we'll see some official about Daydream for mate 9. The pro is off course better because of the screen but even the lower resolution mate 9 would do I think, as long you don't have to tweak and side load.

Decision help for buying Mate 9 (with 16:9 aspect ration) OR waiting for Mate 10?

Should I buy the mate 9 nowadays (with the 16:9 aspect ratio) or wait for the bezeless mate 10 (with the 18:9 ratio)? I'm not sure which one will be more comfortable to hold and use with one hand (most of the time) i.e. I'm looking for the most compact of the two for easy handling and less overall weight.
& I'm not really sure how come the mate 10 will be taller than Mate 9 if:
The bezeless design of the Mate 10 should optimize the real estate of the current Mate 9 to a new level
& the surface area of the Mate 10 is going to be smaller than that of the Mate 9?
Regards
better wait for mate 10.... mate 9 is too big and too heavy for most hands.... I constantly have pain in my wirst
Just wait for the mate 11, will be awesome
But seriously I think that this year phone manufacturers really stepping up their game compared to last year. I would probably wait what Google and Samsung and Huawei have coming up

seriously I'm between Mate 9 & Mate 10 only. I may not live up till Mate 18 is released!!. I'm deciding between the current model or waiting for the newer one if it is really going to be more hand friendly - because of the bezeless desgin - but that 18:9 aspect ratio of the newer coming model kinda worries me because it 'll make the phone taller than the current model.
If I were you, I would buy mate 9.
You can buy Mate 9 and use it till 2017 end, then sell or stay.
Mate 9 was released in 2016 November. I suppose, Mate 10 will be released in the end of 2017.
buy a galaxy s8+
Wait for M10 if you can, i have the Mate 9 and would buy it again, but knowing that M10 soon will come out, i wonder what kind of improvements it will bring.
I'm so happy with my Mate 9 that I'll change only when it breaks. :victory:
I'm with a V20 and looking for to drop it to a Mate 9.
Do you know when Mate 10 come out? November?

I agree always better to wait for mate 10 if you can afford the time. But size is not the reason. This phone is perfect size I couldn't imagine smaller. If you don't want a big phone there are plenty of other options.
Maybe I can't afford the time. LOL
There's a long time until November/December.

I just couldn't wait either and I bought a Mate 9 Pro in the meantime until November/December when the Mate 10 and the Pixel phones are out.
I'm so happy with the device, same specifications, but with Super AMOLED QHD display and better speakers, one of the reasons I dropped the Mate 9 a few months ago.
I also had the P10 Plus, but it was just garbage and I don't recommend to buy it at all.

Actually I wasn't expecting a big change from regular Mate 9, but even when they have the same position, is day and night difference between them. The quality and volume is far way better and is the only phone so far that give me this real stereo sound, and I'm really used to it because my last 2 phones were with front facing speakers (Axon 7 and Idol 4S), so I can notice the difference pretty quick.
I got the regular Mate 9 last January, but after a couple of weeks I dropped it because screen was "only" FHD, the speakers were not that good and the one in the earpiece was with almost no sound at all. I came back to Axon 7 and a month ago I got a P10 Plus wishing that they fixed this, but was even worse, with no sound until I reached about 70% volume, and the phone itself is just pure trash, with a lot of heating and battery draining problems. My bet is that Huawei messed up EMUI 5.1 in the P10 Plus, but still was a device that had everything I needed if it could work properly.
After some days of searching for a new phone, I found that there was a Mate 9 Pro version, that is almost identical to P10 Plus, and I decided to give a shot and MAAAAAAN!!!, wonderful screen, really fast device, even faster than regular Mate 9, really good speakers and excellent audio through jack. I never put the speakers at more than 40% and they sound pretty good, and for audio jack, the same because even at half, is already painful for my ears; besides I have really good isolation with the earbuds I'm using. I carry a Sony XBA-H1, that by no means are the best, but neither are cheap and the response and dynamic range is awesome.
There are so many differences between the Mate 9 and the Pro version, and I wonder why no one talks about them, is much more than 6GB RAM, QHD screen and 5.5" display size. For example, the capacitive buttons are really nice and they hide along the metal body. Same with the LED, that in this case is multicolor, and when some notification comes, it remembers me my multi color Razer mouse, because it starts to light with a lot of colors. This AMOLED screen is so fast and responsive, and this Pro version comes with different options in EMUI as well. The curvy edge is a nice touch, because is not uncomfortable to use, like those Galaxy Edge versions, and it adds a touch of elegance to the phone.
Not everything is good, and so far the only downside is battery life, which is not as good as in the Mate 9, even when they have the same battery. With regular Mate 9 I could easily do 7-8 hrs SOT, while in this device I'm usually around 6hrs, but is more than enough for me and I'm positive it will improve when we get Android O and EMUI 6.0 which is already on the works.
In conclusion, I would recommend to buy the Pro version if you can afford it, because the experience it offers is totally different and really premium, and even when is kind of unknown model, many reviews still call it the best Android phone you can get, but of course, with a high price tag.
I am also on the fence about that gimmicky 2:1 aspect ratio. It is really impractical and most media out there is 16:9 which uses the whole screen instead of having black bars on the sides, which is quite annoying and unnecessary. I sure wish they would have stuck with 16:9 instead.

It is simply not time to switch to 18:9 aspect ratio yet.
Next year all apps and most media will be ready for the new format.

It seems the new Honor Note 9 is a taste of what it can come for Mate 10. Is only my personal opinion, but I like it.

Which cell is just as good as the 20x mate?

What After adding to Huawei blacklist Trump that big screen cell phone would be good to buy. I love my 20x mate but let's be honest this will affect a lot to Huawei and q out your operating system and my OS) or is apps that has Google market are going to happen years it is possible that the factory only dedicated to continue selling in China and no longer internationally.
I honestly don't think there are any as good.
I didn't want to buy a Huawei because I'd much rather have an unlocked bootloader, but for me, the big screen, active pen, big battery, and fast cpu are too important to give up.
If you don't mind a slower CPU and no pen, but still want the huge screen, go with the Mi Max series.
If you want the pen, go with the Samsung Note 9.
I you just want an overall good phone, then there are plenty of other options depending on your priorities.
But I'd stick with the Mate 20 X. We shouldn't be affected that much. I'd guessing there will still be software updates for next year or so. I just bought mine 2 weeks ago and don't regret it at all.
I want a mate 20x another brand y
Cmon, u really run already.
All will be good again in one way or another [emoji1787][emoji23]
ZenFone 6!! Looks promising.
Actually i would go for zenfone as first choice, then mi max and in last place this could be samsung note series, depends on what battery will be in 10 release.
I'm thinking about the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom, nice looking phone with full flat screen/no notch, camera upgrade or the Nubia Red Magic 3 with a 90Hz screen and also a 5000mAh battery. I now that that both are 6.65 inch and smaller then the Mate 20 X, but i hide the notch from the begin, so i think the difference wil not be huge.
The ZenFone 6 is a no go for me, because it doesn't have a amoled screen. I really don't want a new phone without it.

Yeah I am in the same boat...I mean already the Mate 20 x looks like a Hobbit compared to where I was coming from mediapad X2 and Sony Z3 Tablet Compact so I am having a hard time adjusting to the much smaller size but of course, the hardware itself is WAY above both of those phablets I had before.
All of these other phones are much narrower and smaller than the 20 X. A friend of mine wanted to try the OP7 Pro and we went to T-Mobile yesterday and he bought one to use along side his 20 X but after a day he said it's probably going back as it's just way too small. The camera isn't as good and the battery life isn't even close to the 20 X. My advice would be to keep the 20 X until another manufacturer decides to make a phone as large as the 20 X.

But the OP7 Pro looks smaller because it has curved glass, what i really don't like.
I still think it's all going to blow over and in a few months the wotsit in a wig and china will come to some sort of agreement, somewhat annoying that Donald making a decision like this affects us non Americans!
But, if the worst happened, as long as the play store etc was ok then I'd probably just carry on and keep using the Mate 20 X, Android P works fine for me so I can live with the phone staying as it is for another 12 months or so.
The only tempting part will be when the Pixel 4 and Note 10 are released and seeing what they are bringing with them, but they'd have to offer something ridiculously special which i doubt they will do

The OP7 Pro also has a 19.5:9 aspect ratio which is skinnier than the Mate 20 X's 18.7:9 and the crappy curved glass doesn't help. It sucks with phones when you live in the US. Not a lot of Global devices support all the US LTE bands.
Hi guys,
What other phone is just as good as the 20x ?
Answer is really simple : NONE.
Please don't get me wrong : I am by no means a Huawei/Honor fan.
Quite the opposite...
But let's face it : what other manufacturer offer a display that is close or above 7" ?
Answer here is really simple : there are only 2.5 manufacturers doing this :
- Xiaomi with the mi Max 3 ;
- Honor with the Note 10 and 8x Max ;
- Huawei with the Mate 20x.
Compare the 20x with the mi Max 3 and the Honor 8x max is of course not a question. They're simply not playing in the same league.
One may say whatever he wants about the Kirin SoC, but comparing a Kirin 980 with e snapdragon 636 is just not fair.
And comparing an IPS display with an OLED one isn't a fair comparison either.
So that leaves the Honor Note 10.
But it may have the same issues as Huawei. about Android.
And to make things clear : the developlment of Android has been halted to Huawei.
But :
- that doesn't mean that the past is getting rid off ; so if the phone is working right now, it will continue to work right after...
- Huawei still has access to the free source aosp and has enough power to continue to offer some updates based on that. And honestly : who is buying Huawei for the frequent updates ? You want a phone that is updated constantly ? There's only one manufacturer to go : Xiaomi... monthly updates for all their phones.
Just my own thoughts and expressing a personal opinion. I don't try to force my views on this upon any member of this community. So please, do not flame me if you disagree...
Regards.
I had all 4 phones, now i only have the M20X which is so much better the the other 3.
Then comes Note 10, Mi max 3 and 8X max.
And im satisfied as it is, so i can live with it 1 year more if.
I just hope Ark OS soon will be released, im ready to support that vs Trump/US/Google/Android no matter what. This fake president shall not decide my choice of phone.
Even if I am upset about Huawei system update policies, I've never been so comfortable with a phone before (well, maybe the Ascend Mate 7).
- The REAL dual speakers are incredibly outstanding. My wife ditched the iPad Mini-bluetooth speaker pair to start watching anything video-related on my 20X with me. We are really impressed.
- Speaking of multimedia, the screen is simply gorgeous.
- I hadn't ANY issue with ANY game. Period. I know the 855 is all around the news today, but this Kirin is nowhere behind. It flies.
- Calls are loud and crisp, seomthing which is really important for me.
- We have an LG Smart TV with webOS. It took me like 1 minute to launch the desktop from the 20X. I've tested it a couple of times, but I think this feature is something I will start using more frequently in the future, for sure.
- One of the best cameras around, even in night mode. No, no GCam needed, it does its work effortlessly and fluidly, something every frigging flagship camera should do (and not every one of them do).
Even if I only get security patches for the rest of its life, I'm keeping this beauty for a LONG time.
I also love the speakers, what phone has two real speakers? Mostly the second speaker is the call speaker now and that's sounds bad. The same with the IR blaster, what new phone has that?
I wish that 5G version was a nice upgrade (WQHD+ screen, higher ppi, 90hz, under–screen fingerprint, more ram/storage, no notch, more zoom camera), but it looks more like a downgrade.

Oukitel K9 7.12" with 6000mAH battery
I have this device
looks like a 20x clone minus some of the polish-not as fast not as loud but am sure can be improved a lot
has all US bands like 20x so works great here
stock Android 9
I got the SP flash tool flashable ROM
attached are the ROM contents
wonder if anyone could take up this for development
I picked it up from AliExpress for $179
Great great battery life better than 20x imo (but then performance is a price you pay-could be the Mediatek versus Kirin and just s/w ui polish missing)
EDIT it does have OEM bootloader unlocker option that you can choose and set active
not tried it yet-maybe it is a simple fastboot unlocker command without code (don't know untl I try or I might ask the company contacts who sent me the ROM and instructions etc)

good you got a laugh from the wrong end he he
for calls, sms, mms, internet and most apps same result for 1/3rd the price
the 0.3 cumulative seconds saved over time did not change my life (doubt changes anyone's in reality)
definitely the 20x feels better no doubt having used both

the mi max 3 imo was the best among the lot and I liked it more than the 20x ...the lack of network bands support (only 4 and 5 for Tmobile and ATT, and ATT does not even broadcast on 4 in my state, 5 is very spotty-so it was mostly on 3g or umts) otherwise mi max 3 with miui candy was the best also from balance, weight and feel standpoint
too bad no mi max 4 and mi mix 4 will never get a 6.9 variant
it seems to me that the OEMs are walking away from the large screens
why? 8x max came in the 7.2" first that the mate 20x eventually got
now 9x max is only coming in the 6.59" (as is the 9x)
then you have Xiaomi not doing the max 4
so that tells me the 6.9 to 7.2 era is done or on a pause for now
instead get 6.6 and 6.7 super skinny phones purporting to be large screen phones when they are not due to the elongated aspect ratios
Unfortunately true, aspect 19.5x9 or new 20x9 is killing size, 6.7inch samsung a70 or op 7 pro have real size of old 16x9 phone 6 inch. This is nothing.
I think also that they kill 7 inch products to make space for foldable phones which costs few times more...
But still I hope Huawei will make 30x! Not just hope, but really think it is real.
