Got my device soon, but I see screenshots of TWRP is working.

The link appears to be dead, but in the meantime I'll try a download from the forum you linked.

Glad to hear that.
I just put up the link this morning and I'll check it up after work.

If anyone was also wondering if Xposed works, I can only say that it does install, it does boot, but the phone 'settings' force closes (no message, just returns to previous window).
Steps taken:
Installed Xposed installer 3.1.1
Installed version 87 (not from recovery)
Rebooted
Reboot takes a long time, but eventually boots. Seems to work fine until I went to the phone settings and it wouldn't open.
Opened the Xposed installer again
Uninstalled (not from recovery)
Maybe results will vary with an older xposed or doing it properly from recovery, not risking it at the moment.

I've updated the link, thanks for pointing out the error.

Just tried flashing Xposed 86 (tried 87 before) through the recovery, also disabled resource hooks in the xposed installer app.
Now everything seems to work.
For anyone that is interested .

Thank you. This worked for me.
What I did:
- unlock bootloader
- access phone bootloader with phone connected to computer
- click app's "...recovery" button and select TWRP recovery file provided with app (the installation is almost instantaneous)
- boot phone into recovery (TWRP will be in Chinese but English is available)
- root phone from TWRP advanced menu (clicking the "root" button will install supersu)

Where was this, when the 5x started development? I already flashed, and rooted my 5x, but would this tool work on that? If so, I can archive it for later use, if needed, or change it, so it could work with the 5x, since they both(at this time) have EMUI 4.1. Is it possible?

I heard that EMUI has a problem with xposed, it's at the start of the honor 5x forums, in development.

Is it easy to unlock bootloader?
I have not yet gotten a 6x, but will soon. Trying to plan custom rom and etc in advance. Its really great that the device has such activity!
In G7, bootloader unlock requires getting a code from Huawei website and took some time before the phone model was on the website. It also did a factory reset after applying the code for which it gave no warning for.
I imagine its similar bit Honor, seeing as Huawei is their parent.

Yes, it's almost the same for 6x to unlock.

For 5X, there is only TWRP, not with the 1-click root function.

Anyone done this on a BLN-L24 yet?
I was gonna wait a while to mess with this thing but I just switched carriers and I need to try and get around the hotspot provisioning check.

Yes, but you simply have to flash SuperSU zip to root.

Success
Was able to find the offending files in system/app that were initiating the carrier hotspot/tethering check...deleted them and now I'm in business.
Also, if anyone is having trouble getting viper4android working (I was), there is a flashable zip in this thread that works. :good:

Just wondering if anyone had any luck with the workarounds for our device? If so please post what ROM's work and which workaround worked. Also post whether the boot loader needed to be locked or not. I have been working since I found the official app last night, but So far no luck. I'm trying many custom ROMS as I don't really want another stock ROM, Hence why I am rooted. Anyway, any help would be boss! Thanks!
For me, it just has Google Play Services crashing whenever I try to add a card. This was after disabling SuperSU.

did you try stock rooted thats my next attempt after I charge phone up a little. I been reading up and it seems stock rooted with supersu removing stock or xposed rootcloak work. Just nandroid and try it out nobody says you have to use it but if that works it may give us an insight on what to target for getting it to work
Yes, so far I believe thats what I read. At this point I have read a lot. The two methods involve unchecking enable superuser in supersu and then the root cloak method via xposed. Neither have worked in every custom ROM so far. I may try CM nightlies tho.
just an fyi i tried stock for the hell of it and it worked with just unchecking supersu root option. Maybe a buildprop edit to trick it to think its a basic stock rom may work
http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-one/development/rom-cyanogen-os-12-1-rooted-cleaned-t3187016
Update. I have found a mothod that works, haven't tried the "pay" part, but I have Android Pay activated and working. The above link is the a rooted ROM with some mods that works. Its CM OS 12.1 and seems pretty stable, etc.
The method I used
1 Bootloader is locked. Just so you know. But all operations will function that you need.
1 Install ROM (use the link above for details, NO GAPPS NEEDED)
2 DENY ROOT/SUPERSU installation.
3 Boot ROM as normal
4 Open SuperSU
5 Click Enable SuperSU (This disables it/Unchecks the box. You will see a prompt saying uninstalling SuperSU)
6 Reboot
7 Install Google Play Services then Android Pay (APK's found on the web, GPS is 8.1.13)
8 Open Android Pay and follow prompts to install cards
9 Open SuperSU and recheck Enable SuperSU
At this point the phone is rooted and Android Pay is set up. I tried to do another card but got the same old error "cannot verify Android bs."
My conclusions:
If the ROM has a root option under developer settings, then Android Pay will not work. This ROM does NOT have that but instead has SuperSU installed. ROMS that have both will NOT function, I tried 3 or 4 today that did not work. I imagine they need to be CM based at this time as well. I bet someone better than me will come up with a better solution. This combination works for me. If anyone needs help, PM me. Also, If anyone has anything to add, Please do! Thanks!!!

basicaly what I was saying it works on stock ONEPlus roms only it seems and you just have to deny root when adding cards. I tried to use lil while ago but it said my cards were not available yet to use with Android Pay
Just wanted to chime in with my post from another thread to consolidate threads:
I am running COS 12.1, rooted, with an unlocked bootloader. I recently upgraded to Android Pay after using Google Wallet for NFC payments for years on my old GS4 and my OnePlus One.
At first, I was unable to add my payment card due to being rooted. Easily fixed, I unrooted using SuperSU to do a full unroot and was able to add my card and complete the app setup.
The showstopper is that whenever I try to use it at a merchant, I end up with a screen that says Confirm your password - you must unlock to use Android Pay. No matter how many times I enter my password it just keeps asking over and over. I disabled the quick unlock feature under lock screen settings just in case that was the issue, but it made no difference. An ongoing support case with Google just came back with the following:
"The specific error message that you saw means that your device can't support Android Pay's advanced security. It seems that the phone manufacturer has modified the operating system to the point where it is no longer compatible with our software. You may want to use Android Pay on a different device for the most secure payments."
just as an update i re-flashed stock rom and realized using xposed and make any additional changes to the system folder causes it not to work whether I have supersu checked off or not. Now with that said i have it working fine with stock and having supersu loaded from twrp and play store nothing else. I also set up a tasker command to uncheck supersu prior to me using Android Pay. 1 click I guess I waas being lazy

I have tried disabling root and root cloak. I am on Exodus rom and it has "morph mode" where I tried both methods in Exodus mode and AOSP mode. If this helps narrow down the problem.
For me on Exodus (haven't tried any of the morph modes), the unlocked bootloader seems to be the culprit. Hopefully someone figures out a workaround.

bootloader is not the problem. Android Pay is looking for more than likely specific files in your system that are missing in AOSP or custom roms. I flashed stock and as long as I uncheck SuperSu its been working fine for me. I have added several cards over the past week

android authority has it and if you do a google search for it you will find it. also know that you have to un-tick auto updates in Google Play. I wiped data in Google play, Google Play Services prior to installing the now outdated version. I had to do this so that when I loaded the older version it will try and update the moment you try and set it up.

Xposed for 5.0.1

Fellow Edgers, now that we have converted to Developer Editions it's time to have some fun. One of the ways to do that is with Xposed modules. I'm still learning myself so if you enjoy a particular module please post it so we can all profit.
Thanks to the Xposed team and @arter97
To install Xposed on 5.0.1:
1. Download the Xposed installer apk from here.
2. Download the compatible unofficial framework from arter97 from here.
3. Reboot into recovery.
4. Flash the framework file.
5. Wipe cache (not sure that matters but I still do it).
6. Reboot and wait. It took about 5 minutes for mine to boot.
7. Install the APK.
8. Start grabbing modules.
9. Talk about it.
Thanks @max366 for adding the Uninstaller info. You can download here which comes from this thread. It is a good idea to download this onto your Edge before you start so that if you have issues it is easier to flash. Just boot to TWRP and Install the uninstaller
Moto Tether
Removes subscription check so you can use native tether- works for me 915v 5.0.1

Update:
Still don't know why it happened but restored a full system backup from before I was messing around and got it working again

Should we stay on stock for right now?

What should we do? For myself at this moment, I do not need root or custom roms. I have read many people recommending staying on stock for OTAs updates right now. The only reason I want TWPR is for the nandroid backups of the stock rom. Is it even possible to update stock, the OTA updates and reapply the unlock bootloader and TWPR afterwards? I know TWPR is still being working on at this moment. Also, is there even a stock rom [for FRD-AL04???] without root available through TWPR right now?
I believe I have FRD-AL04 which is the US/32 gig phone, right? Is this the correct model? Here is the link to amazon page.
Mine is the US 32gb black Honor 8 and model number is FRD-L04
Edit: Check your model number in the Settings > About Phone screen.
---------- Post added at 04:30 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:22 PM ----------
On whether to stay stock or not... it's up to you. I unlocked my phone, which wipes it, then installed TWRP and SuperSU for root. Kept the ROM stock. But then I realized I forgot to do OTA updates first. Doing a quick update failed because TWRP didn't know what to do. I then selected a "Full Update" in the menu of the Updater. This actually completely wiped out my unlocked bootloader, recovery and root in one swoop. So now I am back to stock it seems so I'll have to unlock and start over if I want to redo it. But I'm not sure I am going to. I started using Helium made by the team that made ClockworkMod. It isnt able to back up ALL app data, but it does get a nice chunk of it which I think will be good enough for me for now.
Stay on stock until company stops pushing out OTA updates. I do this on all my phones.

Few questions if you don't mind.
1. Are you saying that even with unlocked bootloader and custom recovery you're still able to accept the OTA?
2. How would you restore the apps&data after accepting the OTA and going throu the unlocking/rooting process over again? Does Helium handle this w/o problems?
Thanks.
well, your question is complicated... but it has many type of sollutions
1.if its the nandroid backup is the only thing you want, then try backing up via honorsuit app,,
2.you can unlock the bootloader( dont worry you still be getting updates after this)
install twrp
make a backup
and find if someone did a backup with stock recovery
grab it
restore..
now you have your backup and youl be elligable for ota
3. if theres no one done a backup of stock recovery, dont worry... you can do it
unlock bootloader
now type fastboot devices
fastboot boot recovery twrp.img
this will temperorily boot twrp and you can have your backup
and BTW, you better be on stock, because, there is no stable custom rom yet and you are nearly getting a nougat update..:good:

1. Yes, but only if you select the FULL download update in the menu of the updater (which says it's around 1.6GB). This will wipe out your unlock, TWRP and root though. At least it did for me.
2. I don't know, I didn't re-unlock it because it was going to wipe my phone again. I decided to stay stock for now using Helium backup to backup my apps, SMS, etc.

Ok thanks, but I am already using the OSX app myself. Managed to get it to work just now, had to reboot and now can't get it to work again. Some say to select 'midi' instead of ptp to get it to work, but that doesn't work for me either. Seems its a timing thing and I have't worked it out yet.
Not having a cross platform backup mechanism certainly doesn't help people stay stock without root imho.

I've never run into that with stock recovery but I had that issue with clockworkmod a long time ago.
You might verify you have the correct update zip for your tablet.
Usually that error comes from the tag in the updater script being for another model.
It could also be that the zip you have isn't official and needs to be installed from non stock recovery.
If you are full stock anyways I would recommend just using the Samsung switch software to run the update instead (unless you have a reason to install a version below the latest.)
i tried installing switch and it errors saying something about side by side configuration is incorrect im on windows 7 64

Looks like the same issue found here: https://us.community.samsung.com/t5/Tablets/Smart-Switch-won-t-start-side-by-side-configuration-problem/td-p/50275
According to that post you need to find and install the following:

I think that depends what model you have.
I'm on the Verizon P905V model so for me there is no root for 5.1.1 and the bootloader is locked so I dont have custom recovery.
if you have a model that allows custom recovery as indicated in your first post you would be better off flashing a custom rom if one is available.

quick question, i have the same verizon model p905v and been putting off updating, currently on 4.4.2, i used to have root, but no longer b/c i took an update by accident.
my main thing is the multi-window apps drawer, can you still add apps to that drawer that aren't "officially" supported for multi-window? i use this function almost 100% of the time i'm using the tablet since i use it in my car as GPS/podcast/music player. i use this app currently to help with that: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xpe.app.multiwindow.commander
when i open the app, it says i don't have root, but the app still lets me add apps the the multiwindow apps drawer that weren't there by default.
is there any way you can test this out or if someone else can chime in on that, i'd appreciate that.
I tried the app you posted but without root it doesn't seem to work .
It let's you make the changes within the app but they revert when you reboot, and you have to reboot for them to go through.

Root your G7 with Magisk

Notice: before doing it, make sure your phone bootloader is unlocked or it won't work
This will require you to find a matching full ROM. To find your matching channel, go to Settings > About Phone > Software channel
Lookup the first two letters and find the matching ROM there
https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/river/official/
If your phone channel is "US Retail", download RETUS (retail US)
After you have downloaded the full ROM (you should keep the full ROM in case you want to revert to stock unrooted), unzip and get boot.img. Copy the image to your phone and use Magisk to patch the image. After that, copy the output image to your host computer.
Now turn your phone off, press and hold power + volume down to enter bootloader, connect your phone to host computer, and enter
Code:
fastboot flash boot
Press space once and drag and drop the output image file to command window.
If everything goes well, restart the phone and confirm it is rooted with Magisk
Now you have rooted G7
Nice solution. Did not even need TWRP for this either.
Seems to be oversimplified. I'm sure this makes perfect sense to those that go through the root process often or at least recently.
Unfortunately I'm not one of those. Last device I rooted was about 5-6 years ago.
I'll be doing my homework on the new tools and procedures while waiting for a more detailed step-by-step guide.
Thank you for your efforts and at least I know that root is possible.
Please can you guys make the steps easy to understand...some people here are new in this method.... Thanks
Question
What will my mirror be if Software Channel says Amazon?

I don't think Amazon version allows you to unlock the bootloader
Alternative method: look at the appendix of model on the box and find a matching one

I was able to unlock mine from amazon, it was XT1962-1 and said software variant amz and software channel amazon. For root I did have to flash with stock rom. The steps I took are listed in moto g7 questions thread. Look for amazon in the title.
I just picked up a G7 to play with today.
@mingkee I'm assuming these are similar to the Pixel devices when an OTA is sent we can just reflash the Stock boot.img and then take the OTA and re-root using the same methodology above?

Yes, as long as using correct boot.img
I tried with G7 Play - Channel
Did not work. These errors occurred in the prints.

You should be good. The bad key error is normal. What happened on reboot?

Don't worry about the error.
Install Magisk Manager and required components and that's it.
Keep the original boot in case to get OTA, but you should get updated full ROM and get updated boot and patch and flash again

Rebooted normally. When it starts, the screen turns completely black, and bad key is written in the upper left corner. It restarted in the same way.

Can you explain this better? Did not quite understand.
This method works flawlessly. Thanks for the tip.

Boot.img should match ROM version or you may have trouble booting.
New OTA has been released for US, but it's recommended to wait for updated full ROM in order to regain root.

Did not work.
My bootloader is unlocked.
The boot.img image is correct.
I did it step by step and it did not work.
I do not get root and magisk says that it is not installed.

Did you patch boot.img?
my moto g7 non variant river phone channel said "US Retail", but the required rom info was under River/Official/Retail, not River/Official/Retus. When I tried Retus, it bootlooped until I flashed Retail. FYI for anyone encountering same issue.

Yeah. I copied the patch boot to my computer and flashed with adb.
My software channel is "reteu2" and the software version is PPW29.98-28.
Under river/official/RETEU/ I cannot find a suitable software version. Is my version not available there?
