Hi all,
I recently got a Vernee Apollo Lite and was looking to connect a portable DAC (Oppo HA-2) to it so it can drive a pair of 150 ohm headphones..
I am hooking up the DAC via USB OTG & the audio works well, however the Apollo also charges the DAC - which I don't actually need, the Oppo has its own battery and I would rather have that power the DAC as the phone's battery is draining really quick this way.
Is there Any way round it?
Thanks
Any thoughts?
Cheers!
I believe USB OTG requires that the phone act as the host device, which involves supplying power to the client - like any computer would. It seems the USB micro-B port on your DAC was included with phones in mind, but in that case they should have added a mode to it so that it doesn't drain battery when connected to another battery-powered device.
I don't think it would be possible for the phone to work in OTG mode without exposing tension on the USB port (but then again, USB Type C is quite flexible with the whole alt-modes thing, so I don't really know. It would definitely require some driver hacking in the kernel). Even if it was (or if you manually cut the power lines on the USB cable), there's the question of whether the DAC would "detect" the phone with no power coming through the USB port.
Do you have an other USB OTG device (e.g. phone or tablet) where the DAC behaves as you want it to (i.e. it works but discharges its own battery instead of attempting to charge, draining the host's battery in the process)?

Ok...so I have ordered 3 different adapters for my samsung galaxy note 10.1, ive tried it when it was rooted and on stock, nothing works, basically i get the usb adapter, plug it in, and the ps3 controller works for like 2 hours...then doesn't work on any of the adapters, it stops reading the ps3 controller and says its a high power device and that's it, , it think it stopped after the controller conected to the ps3 again? can someone please tell me what to do? ! im just fed up!
I use a USB OTG cable and find it only works with devices that don't require power from the USB to work. Maybe a ps3 controller needs an external power supply.

maybe, but it's so frustrating because i saw youtube tutorials and tutorials on here about what to do even with xbox controllers, im just having no luck with it at all, doesn't even allow me to do it wirelessly, but usb memory sticks work fine just the controllers...
I'm not sure if this would work but since you have got 3 cables experimenting with one wouldn't be a great loss...
Usb cables have 4 connections. 2 are data 1 is +5v and one ground -
If you cut about half way into one of your USB OTG cables and found the +5v and ground - cables and cut them so your tablet can't see a load then with another USB cable (male plug side only) connected the +5v and Ground - only to the female side of your USB OTG only so it could power the ps3 controller.
Then you would plug the extra USB plug into another USB socket like a PC or laptop or similar to power the ps3 controller.
Just an idea.
Edit: Or just find the red cable in one of your USB OTG cables and cut it. You will have to charge the usb controller another way though.
Your PS3 controller is attempting to charge its battery from the USB port/OTG connector. The port can only supply amperage for so long before protection circuitry kicks in and keeps itself from melting down. Atleast that's the way I would do it if I were an electrical engineer
Yes even data cards do not work
I find I can use memory sticks OK but anything that draws a lot of current gets the (in)famous "high power USB device" notification...
It's a pain in the bum as I would like my $600 Note to use the 1Tb NTFS drive my $400 A501 uses with no problem whatsoever...
Today there are whole host of usb powered devices some are good and some are cheap may be the concept Samsung had was to make sure some device does not pull power more then the tablet can provide and in turn does not overcook some of the components so that have built in a failsafe may be because the single port does multiple functions this has been provisioned
Yeah but when I used a powered HDD it fried not only my Note10.1 but also the portable HDD too... Not happy...
I think it killed the battery to be honest as it got REALLY hot and the battery dropped from almost fully charged to depleted in about 15 minutes... Also killed the digitiser but the pen still worked. Turned off and left overnight and tab was completely dead next morning....
Very expensive paper weight...:crying:
So I had to go out and get another one, this time 32gb 3g instead of 16gb (eating rice and tuna for the next month or 2)...
Won't be connecting another drive any time soon...
thanks
Has anyone pulled off using getting USB OTG+Charge mode working on the SHIELD?
I tried to splice in the 5VDC line from the SHIELD charger to a regular OTG cable, and while the charging light on the back of the device lights up orange and the data port works (a connected mouse works fine), Android does not report the device is charging :S Sometimes some devices have needed a resistor across certain pins, but I'm not sure what to try out on the SHIELD yet.
Would be nice to enable this under the TV in console mode, would get GRID streaming, PC streaming over my wired network rather than wireless, as well as all my emulators etc.
I stumbled upon a similar issue but with nexus 7, and there laid the answer. The micro-controller that is capable of switching usb port to OTG mode and backwards in nexus 7 is capable of powering one device at a time. Battery or the one connected through OTG.
Theoretically in nexus 7 it's possible to modify kernel to power it's battery instead instead in OTG mode, and through some powered USB hub, provide power to the external device.
Or to re-solder pins, but its not worth imho.
We can assume that the issue with Shield is similiar.
But we won't be sure until s1 finds Shiled's USB OTG micro-controller tech specs.
Subscribing in the hopes that this will be possible in future
I think If you had something similar to http://www.amazon.com/OEM-UTStarcom...&qid=1392490266&sr=8-1&keywords=usb+y+adapter you could use the charger to power both you usb device and the shield. It will just need to connect power to all 3 ends.

If i am not mistaken in how shield is built - not possible.

Unless there are diodes on the usb connector on the shield that will prevent power going into the shield while in usb host mode, I do not see why it wont.
I already tried something like this: putting 5V on the power pins when the shield was in OTG mode. Didn't work, the SHIELD didn't recognize the charge in software.

Another idea I have for this would not allow charging but it would slow down the rate of battery drain.
I doubt you would find this cable premade, but instead of applying power to the usb otg circuit it would only connect the 2 data wires to the shield, and the 2 power wires to the wall charger. That should allow your usb device to be powered by the wall charger and no the shield allowing the battery to last longer.
Yet another possibility is to add a diode in to circuit to only allow power to flow into the shield on the 5v+ line.
Just an update, support for charging while in OTG is announced with the April update! http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/articles/gtc-2014-nvidia-shield-software-update-announcement
So no hacks needed
Damn,... all the good stuff happens after I've sold my Shield
Can anyone verify this works out of the box now? USB-OTG host mode while the tablet is fast-charging?
I'm looking at doing this for my in-car installation, I posted this over on the geforce forums:

Hello, we all know that there are USB OTG Cables with extra power plug (Y cable) but those are supposed to power external device like HDD, DVD, or anything what consumes more power than our android device can handle.
But my question is: is there any USB OTG cable with additional power plug but for simultaneous tablet / phone charging while USB stick is used?
I want to watch something long (i.e. TV Show series) from USB stick via OTG cable but I cannot simultaneously charge my tablet, so if it take too long my tablet will be out of power before I stop watching.

That means I have to add a resistor only to usb connector or just need a different kernel, or both?
On the native firmware say that this support function is disabled. Personally, I use this CivZ-FLEX-ЛУЧ-REV3.6.2 + SphereXtreme, where works flawlessly with OTG + charging resistor 64.9 K.
I call BS!!!!
I have a stock firmware, and have been using all kinds of USB cables. Found the best are made from Sony/Ericson and Blackberry. Once you have a quality cable your charging issues will go away.
Right now I am using a 7 foot cable that is from a Sony. No charging issues and works perfectly.
Lately I found another MHL cable 2hich is called HDMI to Micro HDMI, and that micro HDMI plug looks exactly like micro USB. Will such cable work with Note 8 properly without additional power?
The version of MHL our device supports requires a power source external to the tablet. That means the adapter itself needs to provide the power (battery or power adapter) or can pull enough off the HDMI cable, which is usually not enough juice to run the connection.
MicroHDMI and MicroUSB are also not physically compatible (won't fit the same port and different pin outs) even if they look so much a like. MHL typically uses MicroUSB at one end and full sized HDMI at the other.

This is correct u need to put a 63-65 k resistor between ground and Id pin(pin 4 &5) on USB connector. Doesn't work on civatos 4.4.2 as of now. USB host works fine with regular USB host cable but no charging when u use a y cable. I use civatos 4.2.2 kernel also. Works on yyks note 2 4.3 port also..
I have test multiple times. I use a USB dac in car and need charging and USB host.
what resistor should i use on my sghi257m samsung galaxy s4 mini otg usb cable?
on my dads galaxy s5 Active it shows message that says: Do you wanna enable power sharing
is that OTG? on my S4mini nothing pops up
I know this thread is really old but i want to use a USB DAC so need at cable with a resistor as mentioned above but What ROM should I use now?? also is there anywhere I can buy a cable with resistor in it or do i have to do it myself?
Considering to use a Huawei Mediapad X2 7.0 for my 2DIN car install, since the dimensions of the tablet are nearly identical to 2DIN,
Therefore I would like to know if the device supports USB OTG Host mode and charging the battery of the mediapad simultaneously using a certain Y cable?
Thanks, much appreciated if you can give it a try!

Not sure about OTG Host cum charging combination because my understanding if you use OTG Host mode very likely you plug in a USB OTG thumb drive meaning you cannot charge at the same time.
However connecting the X2 micro USB port via standard USB cable to my laptop, I noticed I could use it as an USB device and it charges at the same time albeit not as as fast as a dedicated charging.

Yes, but not OTG.
I can confirm that, on my side, using an OTG hub with a external power plug, no way to have the device charged by external power when in OTG mode.
It is OTG or Normal charge and functions via USB.
Seems Logical because the Phone is supposed to provide the power to its USB accessories in OTG. Just my HUB has a switch that provide power to those accessories instead of the phone Itself. May-I add that switching this power button on the HUB does not function until you had unplugged & replugged the Hub in the phone after switching between the two modes. I'm afraid of the survival of the Micro USB plug of my phone, on the long run, with all those plugin, unplugin actions !!!
It's possible but with anothere Device the Nexus 7 (2012/2013) with Timurs Kernel. What's the difference of this kernel to the normal kernel, so OTG with charging is working for this device, too.
hI everyone in regard to otg using Usb and charging tablet at same time, I have a fusion5 tablet and a usb hub the kind with 3 usb hubs and a power in with a micro usb male plug. and a switch for otg or charge. Ive tried using a potentiometer to find the magic resistor value between pin 4 (the id ) and pin 5 ground of the micro plug.
(thought i had it at one point but not sure) as could play a avi file while charging) However now most of the timee either accesses the usb or charges, I can get it to do both , but stops charging after 8 seconds.
Anybody happen to know if a specific resistance value works for both charging and otg.
I have seen another schematic but havent tried it.
It doesn't sound like the micro usb otg cable to me. I built one without a resistor and mine works just fine. Have a look at your usb settings. Some devices require you select your choice: usb otg or charging.

Thanks How do I look at my usb settings?. I think I may not have the proper resistor setting as will currently provide power to usb and charge at same time for a few seconds then stops charging.. I turn resistance up it will charge , turn it down and will allow access to usb.. i think have to find that magic number inbetween.

Depending on which phone and version of Android you have, the most recent versions of Android have the USB settings under Developers Options.
The USB OTG charging works differently from phone to phone. Sometimes you must plug your charger cable and the USB device you want to connect to into the OTG cable prior to plugging the OTG cable into your phone. This way the phone detects charging and device.

Yes that is what I have been doing . In developer options under Usb default , no charge option there, only file transfer, USB tEThering, MID, PTP ,and o data transfer
I thanks. However i believe the default USB option is charge as thats what it is when i plug in USB to a powered cable.
. As I said jt works for A short time using USB and charging at same time with resistor between 45K and 68k
then either stops charging and continues usb or keeps charging but gives usb errrors or cant access usb but continues charging.
Fusion5 tablet android 9
Update this works fine with unmodified USB hub or charge power and USB on my LG k32 phone but not on the fusion ta blet.
