High powered usb problem - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok...so I have ordered 3 different adapters for my samsung galaxy note 10.1, ive tried it when it was rooted and on stock, nothing works, basically i get the usb adapter, plug it in, and the ps3 controller works for like 2 hours...then doesn't work on any of the adapters, it stops reading the ps3 controller and says its a high power device and that's it, , it think it stopped after the controller conected to the ps3 again? can someone please tell me what to do? ! im just fed up!

I use a USB OTG cable and find it only works with devices that don't require power from the USB to work. Maybe a ps3 controller needs an external power supply.

maybe, but it's so frustrating because i saw youtube tutorials and tutorials on here about what to do even with xbox controllers, im just having no luck with it at all, doesn't even allow me to do it wirelessly, but usb memory sticks work fine just the controllers...

I'm not sure if this would work but since you have got 3 cables experimenting with one wouldn't be a great loss...
Usb cables have 4 connections. 2 are data 1 is +5v and one ground -
If you cut about half way into one of your USB OTG cables and found the +5v and ground - cables and cut them so your tablet can't see a load then with another USB cable (male plug side only) connected the +5v and Ground - only to the female side of your USB OTG only so it could power the ps3 controller.
Then you would plug the extra USB plug into another USB socket like a PC or laptop or similar to power the ps3 controller.
Just an idea.
Edit: Or just find the red cable in one of your USB OTG cables and cut it. You will have to charge the usb controller another way though.

Your PS3 controller is attempting to charge its battery from the USB port/OTG connector. The port can only supply amperage for so long before protection circuitry kicks in and keeps itself from melting down. Atleast that's the way I would do it if I were an electrical engineer

Yes even data cards do not work

I find I can use memory sticks OK but anything that draws a lot of current gets the (in)famous "high power USB device" notification...
It's a pain in the bum as I would like my $600 Note to use the 1Tb NTFS drive my $400 A501 uses with no problem whatsoever...

Today there are whole host of usb powered devices some are good and some are cheap may be the concept Samsung had was to make sure some device does not pull power more then the tablet can provide and in turn does not overcook some of the components so that have built in a failsafe may be because the single port does multiple functions this has been provisioned

Yeah but when I used a powered HDD it fried not only my Note10.1 but also the portable HDD too... Not happy...
I think it killed the battery to be honest as it got REALLY hot and the battery dropped from almost fully charged to depleted in about 15 minutes... Also killed the digitiser but the pen still worked. Turned off and left overnight and tab was completely dead next morning....
Very expensive paper weight...:crying:
So I had to go out and get another one, this time 32gb 3g instead of 16gb (eating rice and tuna for the next month or 2)...
Won't be connecting another drive any time soon...

thanks

[Q] USB host mode, specifically via Nebtop

So, I purchases a USB OTG cable in an attempt to try and expand the functionality of Webtop while using Nebtop. I've been unable to get any response from the phone when I plug in this cable. I've tried my wireless Logitech mouse and keyboard that worked off the bat with my TF101 using the Unifying remote they came with as well as an external TB drive.
Has anyone else had any experience with this? It seems logical that the phone supports host mode since the actual dock has 3 full sized USB ports.
All the information pertaining to this sort of thing I've come up with seems extremely phone specific but if there's a simple solution I'm missing thanks all the more.

The problem actually lies in the usb port of the phone itself. The dock was designed for this purpose, and the dock app handles most that for you, the one thing that the dock is able to do that a straight USB cable can't do, is provide enough "bus" power to use a mouse or even a USB stick directly from the phone. If you want to use a Mouse you will need to get a dock. I got mine directly from wireless.att.com, and it was only $49.00 back in Nov. when I got it. It works VERY well with webtop.
P.S. Motorola is very famous for doing things like this to force you into a dock, or to lock out certain features that everyone really wants to use.
I made my own dock by using a powered usb hub I had sitting around (it was actually the one that came with Rock Band for my Xbox 360). I did have to modify it slightly so that the 1 pin was powered from the 5V (a simple shunt from the 5V inner pin of the power supply solder joint to the solder joint of the 1 pin worked fine--although it might be wise to insert an inline fuse since it also charges your phone while plugged in).
Otherwise, the only other thing needed is coming in the form of your otg adapter that should short the 5 pin (common) with your 4 pin (ID). I did this by cracking open an extra micro usb cable and soldering a wire between the two.
So, my setup was like this:
1. Modified usb cable to short the 4 & 5 pins to let the phone know to go into host
2. Use a female A-female A usb coupler to join the usb cable to the powered hub (I got mine here from Monoprice
3. Get 5V to the 1 pin in the usb hub to provide power to your phone and for whatever is plugged into the hub.
With this, I was easily able to run a usb mouse and a wireless keyboard that had a usb dongle. Paired with a micro hdmi cable to hdmi-dvi adapter, I am able to use my office monitor and the webtop linux. I honestly haven't really used it much yet (if I found it really useful, I probably would have just paid for the dock).
The obvious easy way is to just get the dock. However, I really like being able to do this on my own and since I had this stuff already laying around. Also, the cheap prices from monoprice (I actually made $4 off of the purchase from a PayPal bill-me-later promotion).
So, you should be able to get it to work if you get power to the bus on your usb (but again, it might be safe to pass an appropriate fast-acting fuse, ferrite core, or something to protect from surges). I haven't had issue yet, but I also don't use it often...yet .
It sounds like a bit of yes and a bit of no. The OTG cable I got is microUSB to female full USB, am I going to need to modify this cable as you've described by crossing the 4th and 5th pins?
I'm thinking about ordering this "7 Port USB Squid Hub" since it has the 5v power adapter, do you think it might work?
Just one more question and thanks for all the help but should I not see any response from the phone when I plug in the cable? I read through some of the reviews for cheap cables on Amazon and apparently sometimes they're just useless.

The OTG cable have should work. The OTG cable, to my knowledge, should already have pins 4 & 5 shorted together. I'm not completely certain, but if it's designed as an OTG, it would probably already have that done. If you have an ohmmeter/multimeter, you could try to check (it's hard to isolate the small pins, but you can try). If it's already going to the USB female (type A), you will then be able to directly attach your hub when you get it (without the need of the coupler I had to get).
When I used mine, there was no notification that said "Hey, I'm in USB Host Mode!". However, if you successfully have a mouse attached, you'll see a mouse cursor arrow on your screen.
Have fun with it and if you can't get it to work, let me know and I'll try to explain with even more detail (perhaps with some pretty pictures) of what I did. I more or less went off of what I could glean from reading what others did.
It works great! Also, it is weird to see the mouse on this little a screen, it seems oversized.
I just plugged everything in and it worked off the bat. I'm using just two items from Amazon I got for under 12 bucks (plus, of course, the keyboard and mouse I already had for my computer). I don' think I can post links to the forums yet but the ASINs for the items if people want to do this on the super cheap are as follows:
B0043TBCDS 7 Port USB Squid Hub, a whopping $5.19
B005N55WHI Micro-B USB OTG Cable... $5.99
I chose these because of their Prime eligibility and also for their form factor so as not to cover the HDMI port, I bet it's not impossible to get these even cheaper.
While this isn't technically a replacement for the dock since I had to root the device and I have to press "Load" in Nebtop if I want to go to Webtop I'm extremely pleased with the results.
I also love that all the soft keys are available. The ones I've discovered are that right button on the mouse as well as Esc are Back, the Home key is Home, clicking the wheel as well as Ctrl, Cmd, Alt and a whole slew of others bring up the Menu, but all I can find is F5 for Search.
On another note, while the phone does charge when hooked up, a practical boon, the screen still times out despite having the "Stay awake" feature checked. This is annonying when the phone is on it's side accross the room and I have to squint to see the cursor and swipe it unlocked sideways as well as click back into Mirror Display.

[Q] USB: Charge + Use OTG Simultaneously?

Has anyone pulled off using getting USB OTG+Charge mode working on the SHIELD?
I tried to splice in the 5VDC line from the SHIELD charger to a regular OTG cable, and while the charging light on the back of the device lights up orange and the data port works (a connected mouse works fine), Android does not report the device is charging :S Sometimes some devices have needed a resistor across certain pins, but I'm not sure what to try out on the SHIELD yet.
Would be nice to enable this under the TV in console mode, would get GRID streaming, PC streaming over my wired network rather than wireless, as well as all my emulators etc.
I stumbled upon a similar issue but with nexus 7, and there laid the answer. The micro-controller that is capable of switching usb port to OTG mode and backwards in nexus 7 is capable of powering one device at a time. Battery or the one connected through OTG.
Theoretically in nexus 7 it's possible to modify kernel to power it's battery instead instead in OTG mode, and through some powered USB hub, provide power to the external device.
Or to re-solder pins, but its not worth imho.
We can assume that the issue with Shield is similiar.
But we won't be sure until s1 finds Shiled's USB OTG micro-controller tech specs.
Subscribing in the hopes that this will be possible in future
I think If you had something similar to http://www.amazon.com/OEM-UTStarcom...&qid=1392490266&sr=8-1&keywords=usb+y+adapter you could use the charger to power both you usb device and the shield. It will just need to connect power to all 3 ends.

Unless there are diodes on the usb connector on the shield that will prevent power going into the shield while in usb host mode, I do not see why it wont.
I already tried something like this: putting 5V on the power pins when the shield was in OTG mode. Didn't work, the SHIELD didn't recognize the charge in software.

Another idea I have for this would not allow charging but it would slow down the rate of battery drain.
I doubt you would find this cable premade, but instead of applying power to the usb otg circuit it would only connect the 2 data wires to the shield, and the 2 power wires to the wall charger. That should allow your usb device to be powered by the wall charger and no the shield allowing the battery to last longer.
Yet another possibility is to add a diode in to circuit to only allow power to flow into the shield on the 5v+ line.
Just an update, support for charging while in OTG is announced with the April update! http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/articles/gtc-2014-nvidia-shield-software-update-announcement
So no hacks needed
Damn,... all the good stuff happens after I've sold my Shield
Can anyone verify this works out of the box now? USB-OTG host mode while the tablet is fast-charging?
I'm looking at doing this for my in-car installation, I posted this over on the geforce forums:

looking to go completely wireless with a hard drive for the note pro for movies, music, ebooks, etc. i bought a toshiba 500gb porta-harddrive (UNpowered) and a usb2 otg cable... but its not quite working because the drive doesn't pull enough power to run (it just sits there ticking). when i plug the drive into a powered usb hub and the hub into the otg, it works fine; but then i'm still tethered by the hub power cord.
anyone have a completely wireless setup that works and care to share what equipment they're using? i'm thinking a usb3 otg cable might do the trick, but haven't been able to find one locally, and want to be certain before dealing with the shipping hassle.
thanks,

The additional conductors added in the wider micro USB 3.0 cable are for data, not power. What you could do is get a USB battery...

thanks for the response. two things:
1) can you look at the fcc sticker on the hard drive and tell me what the power draw is? it should say something like 5V+- XXX mA. i'm curious about how many amps it pulls. i think the problem with mine is that it lists 1000mA, which exceeds both usb2 (500mA) and usb3 (900mA) specs.
2) is your tablet rooted? not sure it matters, but i'm reading mixed opinions on the matter in the fora, and it might be a factor.
i've also formatted exfat and that didn't seem to fix it, and it works fine attached to a powered hub, so it looks like its a power issue.

yes, but usb3 allows for more power to be drawn then usb2 according to the specs. turns out not enough for the hard drive either way unfortunately so the battery might be the way to go. would need a 'y' cable though since there is no power input for the hard drive.
now i'm thinking of just getting one of those hard drive/battery/wi-fi hotspot combos that seagate or corsair makes.

My two setups
Seagate wireless plus 1Tb
As long as the battery of the hdd has enough power to maintain its wifi service this is the absolutely no wires solution. Easy to operate but slow in terms of data transfer. Fast enough to watch Hd-video though.
Hebron connector
EasyACC powerpack 10000mA
Toshiba STOR.E basic 500gb ext. USB hdd
In this setup there are cables.
Powerpack to connectorä
Hdd to connector
Connector to Note
Advantage of this setup is that I can read sd Card, connect USB stick, mouse,
And it's still just a little more than a handful of equipment. The Weight is not worth talking about

thats exactly what i was planning on using it for. i've never been able to stream anything via wifi to the tablet (netflix is okay, i mean from my local drives), though, as it always buffers and stutters making video playback unwatchable. probably just my home network, but for almost 200$, i'm a little gunshy about this option.

will try this. cables connecting the devices i don't mind... i just don't want to be tied to a wall outlet. especially if there are no walls available. :cyclops: i went with the 16000 easyacc for $50, and the 9pin usb otg y cable for $9; so that setup is much cheaper then the wifi/harddrive/battery device.
final outcome
thanks to everyone who responded with suggestions.
so i ended up getting a power pack, and an otg y-cable to hook up to the hard drive. i actually bought two otg cables, one usb3 9pin and a usb2 5pin. the usb2 had a micro female connector for the power, while the usb3 had a standard male connector.
the usb3 otg didn't work. plugged the power pack in, plugged the harddrive in, plugged it into the tablet.... nothing.
the usb2 otg did work, luckily the power pack had a male-female adapter. tablet recognized the hard drive was present, but said it was blank, and es file explorer popped up a warning that otg only supported fat32 (hard drive was originally exfat). so after reformatting to fat32, everything seems to work well enough.
i don't know why the usb3 cable doesn't work, it may just be a dud but i have nothing else to test it with. all in all, an annoying and frustrating experience getting this to work. i don't see why anyone actually thinks these sorts of tablets are going to become laptop replacements when basic functionality requires so much teeth pulling.
so it goes,

Smallest Micro USB to HOST/CHARGE adapter?

Hi guys
What are you using to power your Tab S and have a hard drive etc connected
at the same time?
Looking for the smallest possible option to limit bulkiness
Thanks!!
what about this cable.

John.
Yeah looks good....what cables are you guys using for charging and host at the same time?
I heard its not recommended to use an external hard drive without supplying power to the Tab S
Yeah, your right about using an external power supply when using an portable hdd with your tablet as it uses too much power by the hdd, the cable i linked above has an microusb socket for you to plug your tablet usb power adaptor into.
John.
The Y-OTG cables supply power to the OTG device (e.g. SD card USB reader) but not concurrently to the Tab S. Basically all they do is reduce power drain on the TabS. The previous comment to try to use a powered USB hub or a self powered USB device is good advise.

Samsung tablets no longer supports this function that I know of. They used to have a dock mode that would do usb host charge and hdmi out ending with note 8. I tried all types of resistors and cables so far the lava adapter is the only one that worked. It's a solid 1amp charge with usb function. I wasted more money making and buying cables that said worked but never did. If u want ou cheap buy a usb host cable put a 1ohm to 10k potentiometer in between ground and Id pin turn it slow til u see usb host triggered on the tablet but again it could be a waste of money and not work. I had a tab pro trigger usb host and charge that way but was very unstable current. Any questions let me know.
Hi.

A quick Google show this is an common issue for a lot of brands of tablet/phones

USB OTG and Y cables?

Okay, they one I've got is damaged. Gotta send it back.
The ones Exile suggested I've one of them. Though, they connect all to big female USB! So you'd need another USB cable (Big male USB to micro male USB for the tab).
I've been using this one, and it works pretty well for charging and using OTG at the same time. But it won't recognize USB devices unless the charger is plugged in, probably because it has a built-in hub.

Well actually they do, very2 slow, i hooked the OTG i bought to my charger, my tablet and my printer, then started doing some typing work while listening to some tracks on spotify max volume and at about 20% brightness,, after i finished and checked my battery it went up from 95 to 97, also tried the same with a usb attached, so for light loads it does charge but for gaming, even i lose charge when playing games such as vain glory while the tablet is directly charging so im sure its still gonna drain but probably not as fast as not charging at all, or another thing is not all OTG Y cables are configured the same me and @primaleph just got lucky with the ones we got and yours are probably the not compatible ones
A printer?
Anyhow, it doesn't show the lightning symbol if two devices like charger and gamepad are simultaneously connected. Whereas, using just one of the devices works.

Yeah i use an app called printershare, it allows me to use printers directly via usb connection cause i still own those old printers with no wifi connection costs 10 bucks for the license though, i tried with my old usb gamepad and it also charges and gamepad works, i think you need a more powerful charger, i use a tronsmart quickcharge 3.0 with a 2nd port with a max of 6.5V 3amp output which i use to charge it in OTG mode, 5V 2amp chargers should work but sometimes the power cuts out on The devices being connected, happened to me while on a boat trip, boring 2hr ride, me and GF wanted to listen to some music but we both own over the ear headphones not those little earphones, i charge my shield with a powerbank that provides 5V 2A output, plug it in the OTG and use a usb soundcard with with two audio jacks so we both could listen and throughout the trip there are times the soundcard would lose power which was pretty annoying,
Heres a screen recording where it is charging and i attach devices one by one to my shield tablet

i bought this one , it work not enough quick and don t know if i did well,
i use mode 1 , plug hdd then plug charge, in video they use mode 2
