worth buying? - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello community, I'm owner of a xperia z3 and i'd like to know if you think is worth the change.

On lolipop: yes
On marshmallow: NO!
battery drain on MM is quite terrible but the camera quality (Once DRM is disabled on MM) its outstanding
Though nougat is near so we'll see how NN is.
Edit: wait a bit and see how nice nougat is
Personally I really hope the horrible drain is fixed because its rather anoying that my phone dies mid-day and lolipop for some reason just bootlooped upon occasion.

Is stamina mode on and set up properly, is background data disabled. Auto sync, location in GPS instead of battery saving ect are all things that will drain battery try doing a factory reset or software repair both can work wonders when you have problems. It's more likely one or a combination of the above and to much running in the background

Tried factory reset and checked all of the above settings things seem a bit better now. Meanwhile checked in Sony forums, there seems to be a WiFi bug which is causing this. Someone from Sony has also acknowledged this. Hopefully this will be resolved in a software update.

Yeah I Saw that gonna be fixed in a update, wifi always scanning needs to be turned off till then, how are you finding the xa apart from that seriously looking at replacing my M2 with one in a couple of weeks I just hope it doesn't get left behind being a mediatek powered Xperia if I get one.

The overall performance is above average given the near stock Xperia UI. Maybe its not as good as SD 650, 615 series, but it still is manageable. Few sour points like free space is very less, 2GB RAM(but RAM management is pretty good), battery life and lots of bloat in my region atleast. The camera and the display are the plus points. Even though it has a 720p, colours are more vivid and sharper than most phones. The brightness levels too can move from very low to very bright. The design feels premium too with the edge to edge screen. Finding a tempered glass to cover the entire screen edge to edge is bit difficult though. I would suggest go for XA Ultra if possible.

My network only do the x,xa,m4,z5,z5c and z3 i was going to get the x but even on a contract they want to much a month and expect me to pay towards the device(not gonna happen) which leaves the xa as this would be a free device or a honour 7 also free which looks good but I don't like the ui and no app drawer and the xa spanks it in antutu benchmarks and I'm a Sony fan anyway just gonna take some getting used to not having root as I refuse to unlock the Bootloader on a Xperia device and lose all the things you buy a Xperia for to root it. Next two weeks can't go fast enough

Agreed. Its best to stay away from Honor. Here in my country XA Ultra is not even available and Xperia X with inferior specs is more expensive than the Z5. Certainly this is what's wrong with them. They are talking about de-focusing from certain markets. Don't really know where their focus is. Hope they get things sorted out. Their design is just so good. Its so ironical.
I wait for an update to fix the problem !

Yes I have already done this. WiFi is still draining the battery but it's weird the battery is getting better day by day.
Its lasting for more than 24hrs with moderate use now with around 4hours of SOT. The only difference was that I have inserted sim cards. Previously there were no sim cards. Could that be the reason behind the drain?

It probably didn't help the situation having no sim card inserted. The more you use it and charge and discharge the battery the better it will get it may take a week or could take a few weeks to reach its maximum screen time ect. 4hrs sot ain't to bad for a device twice as powerful as the m2 with the same size battery more or less. I usually get between 4.5-6hrs sot depending on how I use it on my m2 I'll be expecting at least 4hrs sot when I get mine on a stock device that is. More than that on a rooted device if root is available that is. I looking forward to getting this device to be honest even if it is a mediatek powered Xperia

Yes the battery has settled after a couple of discharge and charging cycles. :good:
Yet the whole threat is useless. You cant change how the battery / OS is acting, WITHOUT unlock and root access even new custom rom.I lost like 2-3 days in searching for solution of my problem , to find working guide to unlck the bootloader.
The only possible method to save your battery is by using GREENIFY. Using it on my htc phone for like 3 years, with personal score of 30+ days without recharge (STANDBY). Greenify works on root device, that cant happen on this phone ,yet.
PS: i've used some tools like - http://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/imei-verification/1d2ac140b78501316d82b5e787350b76/, Flashtool, without luck.

Utter rubbish, and this device is still to new development takes time and someone who knows how to build working recovery ect. If this device has drm-verity which i do believe all new Xperia device's have since z3+/z5 locked Bootloader root will not be possible unfortunately. I'll know abit more when I get mine next week hop, my current M2 device is heavily modified but it doesn't look good for locked Bootloader root from now on.
I am starting to think that there are some other issues here other than wifi. I think the phone struggles to hold/find signal as my cell standby usage seems really high to me. I've noticed that when at home and the phone is on wifi my battery seems to last for ages. Its the second highest user over the screen.

My battery hardly reaches 3 hours onscreen, normally just more than 2 hours with very little usage, just facebook and around 15 minutes of boom beach over wifi. Even when I've already turned off the wifi scanning it still drains a lot idling. So I don't think turning off wifi scanning is the proper solution to this at all.
And yeah I think hpsauce37 has a point since I've been experiencing really weak mobile signal that leads to disconnecting my call automatically sometimes. And the mobile signal indicator just stands there at 2 bars at the same spot where my Xperia P shows a full bar.

U got 2 options to dissable WIFI scan.Look at the settings.
just to share, by disabling scanning wifi the device still scans for wifi when i switched off the wifi (i know it is a bug. im running build .35)
however, i have reduced the battery drain by 30%
-uninstall facebook (which is 99% running in the background)
-activate stamina mode (always on)
-switch off location service

Should i get a v10

There have been very few brick reports or other serious issues, i got my v10 h901 a few months back and it is a super impressive phone. With more devs it would be near perfect. For the current asking price i can't see why not upgrade, this is far superior to note4 imo

My wife and I each snagged unlocked V10s during a recent sale to replace our G3s that we loved. So far, so good. It's not leaps and bounds better than the G3 for our use, but the camera - particularly the front-facing and manual controls - are great. The second screen takes a little getting used to, but it's handy.
My biggest gripe is that Verizon gimped the phone by removing the Smart Settings feature, and location-based profile changing apps aren't able to find me, so apps like Llama don't work.

I just picked up the V10 on September 27 from tmobile and have to say i'm impressed so far. But the battery is not even close to what my previous G4 was. Since I have 14 days before I can return it, im still worried about the battery not passing 6pm. The G4 got the boot loop and then was repaired by LG but it came back with LTE issues. So T-mobile gave me the option to jump and I did.
I shut the second screen off completely to see if battery improves. Today I did see the battery last past 6pm before I had to charge it. SO LETS SEE what happens tomorrow.

The battery is the most disappointing aspect of this phone (I think). My friend had a g4 and he would be down to around 70 by the end of the work day while I got down to 40. Pretty substantial difference.
Fortunately you can get larger batteries for it, 6500 capacity (PowerBear) or even 9000 capacity (ZeroLemon) on amazon. I prefer the powerbear because I can leave the metal sides visible and the weight is much less than with the ZeroLemon.
The second screen takes up very little battery the biggest offender is the main screen, keep the brightness low when you can don't jack the brightness all the way up.
Upgrade to marshmallow if you haven't already and use the program ForceDoze which aggressively puts your phone in Doze mode to save battery. Unfortunately you'll need to have adb sideloader experience or your phone rooted to use it.
There are a lot of things I like about this phone though:
- second screen is excellent for controlling music with the main screen on
- I can put shortcuts on the second screen for my fav apps for quick access.
- I can setup quick calls on the screen which allows me to quickly contact whomever I wish
- camera is fantastic
- the phone doesn't seem to get bogged down when I have a lot of apps installed, my note 3 did this.
- 64gb capacity
- the design is solid, some don't like how heavy it is but I think it makes the device feel solid. I especially like the metal rails on the sides it makes the phone stand out from other phones.
- audio quality is great with high end headphones
The only downs from my perspective is
- second screen could be brighter (fixed on the v20)
- battery life
- I miss the stylus from the note series

Sounds like you have better battery life in your V10. That made me thing I will reset my phone and not use the LG G4 backup to restore. Hope this make is better than what im getting today, see screen shot below:
Today I'm getting 8 hours with estimated 1.26 left at 16%.
my on screen time is only 2h 31m on time. I consider this very bad.

Yes the screen is brighter than needed I thing. On my past LG G4 the automatic screen was too low So I used a app called Lux Lite Dash to fix this. Now I use is to make the auto brightness less brighter. After resetting the V10 I will install Lux Lite again. I'll consider ForceDoze if I keep my phone and root it.
Yes I am in MM, thanks for your input.

Yes its almost half of what I am getting. Your network signals are very low, that may also be cause of more battery drain. I disabled almost all Tmobile and other useless google apps (Play games, Movies etc) and getting 4+ Hr SOT.

So after resetting my phone yesterday and installing apps manually. I'm glad to say the battery life is way more acceptable today I got 10 hours of usage with 15% battery left. My screen on is only 2h 30m usage and this is a great improvement. My mistake was as soon as I activated the phone the first time I restored everything from a LG G$ back up from my previous phone. That must have done who knows what to the my V10.
Thanks for confirming that my battery life was not normal for this phone and that your phone gave you much better battery. I am more inclined to keeping this phone now. I'm still amazed how good the camera is with manual mode. Its a sick phone.

it's almost a side-grade. Very minor upgrade at best. I would get the LG v20.
No, unless you are with t mobile and it's under warranty.
Reason being is the boot loop issue. It's better to pay 5 dollars to warranty it out then be out of luck and a phone without it.
And it will boot loop. Eventually.
The phone is solid, don't get me wrong but that issue is a major concern.

Literally just happened to me today. Bought it in November when it first came out. I thought I was a lucky one.
Just avoid this phone if you can.

Why is the phone so laggy?

So, I've noticed that phone can be a bit laggy. I first noticed it before the Nougat update, but after the update it's even worse. The phone stutters and lags a lot, and it's really annoying. And the battery life is mediocre to be honest. I'm coming from a Z3, which was basically a perfect phone, so this is honestly quite disappointing. Is there anything I can do to fix this?
Have you tried doing a factory reset?
Do a factory reset. Better yet use flaahtool to better wipe all partitions to clear any remnants of previous installation.
I can attest to the fact that over several of my previous sony devices that post OTA installations deemed my phone's sluggish.
This doesn't seem to be the case for everybody, however for me at least a clean fresh install via flashtool did the trick for me.
However... I feel that the phone is slightly sluggish on nougat compared to MM specifically when interacting with the device on wake up.
It's not as lightning quick to keep up with my interactions as well as MM was.
Placebo perhaps, but my XZ certainly seems to be a tad slower then MM was from my experience.
I'll try a factory reset and see if it helps. I didn't want to do one, but I guess I don't have much of a choice. Thanks.
Try a repair by xperia companion. Best reset for Xperia
I have that lags too..
I tried to factory reset and it didn't help, I didn't try to do xperia repair because earlier i changed my rom to romaur v4.1 and i afraid of brick my XZ..
does anyone found a way to make this phone faster?
And what about the battery life? The battery life of this phone is shockingly bad. I didn't expect it to be as good as my Z3, but this is just terrible.

The least batt life I get is 4 to 5hrs SoT but the highest SoT I got is more than 11hrs (text, a little use of mobile data, movie/video viewing, reading Wattpad, camera, bit of game/s). It all depends on the usage.

Sounds like a misbehaving app. You should easily be able to get 6-8+ hours screen on just by turning the brightness down some, if there's no app hogging all the power.
It probably is. Because GSAM shows that most of my battery is being drained by apps (about 70%), particularly Android OS and Kernel and the in built battery monitor puts 'phone idle', even above the display. I just can't figure out what it is.
Maybe you had bad luck and got a bad battery in your phone. It can happen, especially since you say Idle is at the top. you should get a longer time than 3 hours if Idle is at the top
My USA and docomo Japan versions of XZ both get incredible battery life with zero lag.

Yeah, but that doesn't necessarily explain why the app usage is so damn high, even at 2hrs plus of screen on time, it still accounts for about 70%.

I can vouch for the DoCoMo XZ version. That phone uses 1.5gb of RAM due to two default launchers, DoCoMo launcher being the hog even after disabling most DoCoMo services.
Check your SD card as it could also drain your phone on idle. That matter has been discussed.
I'm currently using the phone without the SD Card, uninstalled FB messenger and with Bluetooth off (normally connected to my smartband), while there has been a modest improvement, it's still quite high, especially compared to my Z3. The orange themed GSam screenshot is from my XZ, while the green themed one is from my Z3. App usage is significantly lower on the Z3, with the screen using most of the power, which is supposed to be the norm.

Trust me, it is.
My phone is also sometimes laggy...
I installed Arrow Launcher (from Microsoft) and now its butter smooth (60fps).
Maybe, there are some problems with Xperia home launcher.
Nova launcher is also better, but sometimes also little stutter.
Apps are running ok. Sometimes little stutter...

real life review...5 months later...and rant

Hi guys. I have had the G4 XT1625 since September 2016. Bought it unlocked at best buy. The screen on my G3 shattered so I thought I would upgrade.
First off it was an upgrade in terms of speed and resolution. I would pretty much say it stops there. I have had every Moto G since first gen. My Verizon G is still up on the shelf as an emergency backup. Hated the second gen. Loved the G3. I expected the G4 to be a great improvement I was mistaken.
Here's where the rant starts.
My major issue straight up is the size. Why so large? It doesn't even fit in the cup holders in my car. But that's a personal opinion.
Next issue I have experienced is it's just straight up NOT reliable. I use my phone for everything, work and play. It gets so hot it bogs down. Random reboots and sometimes just doesn't do what I want it to do. Nothing on Android but it's just not as good as the G3 was.
The phone just has problems. Ghost touch is dumb. I had to get the battery replaced because it wouldn't hold a charge. Apparently according to support don't use the supplied turbo charger. WTF right? It comes back in a couple days for repair for the power button breaking. That's horrible after only a couple months. I feel like the phone isn't made for people who use it all the time.
So now I have a Galaxy S5 and it's good with more support on XDA. I appreciate everyone's opinions if you wish to comment but I am just giving my real life review.
Keep up the good work XDA.
I had nearly the same bad experience with my zuk z1. Bad fp sensor, Bad digitizer, very bad support from manufacturer. Now I'm on g4 plus and totally happy.
Sounds like the OP bought a lemon. No such issues with mine, it's a great phone.

Love this phone, but have to be honest.. first one had DOA fingerprint reader. Hoping no trouble with this one, as always root. Super value, and my first with a FPR, which is really convenient.
I upgraded from a Nexus 5, I haven't noticed any such issues that the OP had, the only issue I had was trying to update to Nougat without unlocking my bootloader, but when the Fastboot flashable files were released I resolved that issue, compared to any other Moto G I've had, I've noticed huge improvements in both speed and reliability, I enjoy the larger screen and speed improvements even vs the Nexus 5, same amount of RAM between the two, only real difference I can see is the processor.

LineageOS OMS 20170124, official build has not a modified kernel, so I can't reach 6h.
What do you mean with 4g?

I set animations to 0 without any ui lag. I use Nova Launcher. I'm using 4g too, but not for volte calls(Germany isn't a volte friendly country )

Yeah I mean off, I don't have time to watch or wait for animations
I think the comments in the thread got off topic. I used the phone much more screen on time than most people. Upwards of 4-5 hours or more a day. On LTE and I commute. So for comparison most people don't push a phone like I do.
Moto decided to not repair my device. Actually gave me a new one. Side note on that...my old one had been bootloader unlocked and they replaced it instead of repair. Gave it to the GF since it's better than her old phone and she doesnt use it near as much as me.
So far GS5 has been working fine lasting longer than the G did and was the same price with more stuff.
Thank you everyone for your opinion.

You're not the only one using the phone more the 5h sot https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B4Zy8uoEfFKLZ0lKNTVYaVowRG8 you should have a look in the other rom threads too

There is a difference between screen on time and actively using it during that time. I have tried multiple Roms. Lineage was definitely the best but kept going back to stock because they just aren't stable enough to be used constantly in the business environment. I have also looked through multiple threads and articles. Seems common issues with the battery and overall issues with the phone itself.
I still stand by my review of Moto could have done a lot better with the device.

Of course, I don't use it 7h permanent. It's also dependent what you're doing while screen on. Gaming sucks more then surfing for example. That should be clear. That's what most people don't understand. It's like driving a car and want to reach the nedc. Everybody gets different consumption values. And therefore you must be careful with comparing different devices, rom and software for sot. @1chrome said it today also.
Everybody should accept everybodys opinion. I do it too. Your review is OK, but keep in mind that it seems you're a minority with your mentiond problems on this device
This device can give me atleast 4hrs of sot based on my usage which is not good but not bad either, I feel more let down by "ghost touch" and that easily scratch able camera glass than the battery life. Apart from that this is a decent performer and I like how it looks, 3 things I love about this device is,
1. The display, it's awesome
2. The front firing speaker, it has more depth compared to any other speaker I have used and I love speakers that have more depth than noise.
3. The fingerprint scanner's position, it's really where it needs to be, again a personal preference.

It's worth to buy it?

Hello everyone,
I'm a XPERIA [emoji769] Z5 owner and I really love it.The biggest problem of this Z5 for me is the heating and poor SOT and battery life overall.. And the rest are awesome! The best screen quality, smooth experience, speaker quality and the beautiful design.
I have been looking the xz premium for some months and It's just impressive for me! What impressed me with this xzp :
1, 4k hdr display
2, Snapdragon 835(lower energy consumption and more efficient, not the same problem of 810)
3, great battery life and SOT (Screen on time)
4, super slow motion 960fps and improvements on the camera
I love my Z5 but sometimes I can't hold it because the heat and the poor battery life. In summer it will be a barbecue when I turn on the mobile data, the battery can't last until noon.
Someone say that the SD835 has problems of WiFi Connection, sometimes the WiFi Connection cut, I would like to know if it is really annoying the daily uses.
Should I buy it from a Z5 owner? How is your experience with it and how many is the difference between the Z5 and the xz premium? Will it heat somehow? The battery life and SOT on it for a heavy user?
My Z5 has only 4h 40 minutes of SOT from 100% to 2% with the mobile data.
Regards

The Z5 is awful. You can't run anything or do much on it without getting so hot. It will be a nice upgrade but not too much. Yes, you wont' have to worry about it getting hot. No more of that, it does get a little warm but not the extreme of the Z5. The battery life is awesome. After a full day and coming home around dinner time, my batter is around 50%-65%.
Other than that, nothing really changes much. You really upgrading for longer battery life and no more burning your hands.

Hello chillingrsx, thx for the answer, yes, I can't do anything on my Z5 because this will be hot running anythings about 15 minutes. I think it will be the perfect phone without the problem of battery and heat.

i have just flashed a Italian Version firmware to my Z5 which is running with Spanish's one, and everything bravo!! For the flash of a firmware I'm sure it's not necessary to unlock the bootloader, I have the bootloader locked and flashed it.
I used the latest version of FlashTool, downloaded the firmware in the XperiFirm in the FlashTool, a option with XF logo, and then flash it with FlashTool, I don't know if there are some differences with xz premium or if it's supported to xz premium.
The firmware, I thinks the US Version is not available fingerprint function and MHL function in it, so it's better others. If you live in America, version of some countries of South America? I live in Spain and I think will be working the baseband of Italian in Spain, it's similary those two countries and very nearly.
