So on every previous android device I've ever owned with Google Voice I had the option of using Google Voice only to make international calls and for voicemail, which was my preference. I've activated Google Voice on my pixel (in part because Sprint's voicemail system is best described as awful) but the moment I did first time setup it redid the carrier provisioning on my phone, and the normal options for outbound calls and the like aren't present. Is there any fix for this? Because this is not really an optional thing for me and I'd hate to have to return this phone.
I have not had any issues like what you've described.
I was on T-Mobile when I purchased my Pixel (Play Store variant)... The day I received the phone, I took it over to Verizon (I needed to make the switch) and had it activated.
Installed Google Voice like any other app and signed in. All of the options on my Pixel are identical to my N5.
I can't understand at all how your options are not showing up on your Pixel. This is really strange.

I actually had been using Google Voice for VM since the Galaxy Nexus. Once I got the Pixel I opted in for T-Mobile premium voicemail service and now I have native VM on the dialer with transcription.
No it is not as feature rich of Google voice. But it is way more seamless.

A friend of mine switched from an iphone to a Galaxy s3 and asked how to check voicemail like the iphone does without having to dial in and punch in your pin number like it's still 1998. Any ideas? I was looking at Google Voice, but it looks to me like it is a full fledged alternative phone service. Not sure where to go from here.

I'm not really sure how the iphone voicemail does it, but you may want to check out Google Voice Lite: http://support.google.com/voice/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=115127. I've been using it for a long time now and love it. I hated Verizon's voice mail.

Use Google voice, set it up and then when you go to dial a number it will ask if you want to use your Google voice number or just the regular phone by default. Obviously choose your regular phone and set the default and viola you have your normal phone but with Google Voice's visual voicemail. Plus you can check your voicemail anywhere you have an internet connection even if you can't currently use your phone.
Thanks. I'm basically using Google voice as a call forwarding service, and can now see my voicemail from the app. Just have to turn on do not disturb so it doesn't ring forever. Not bad.
I use Google voice too, I think passing for voice mail after posting the crazy costs of these plans to begin with is just nickel and diming us further. Just remember if you try to set it up it will give some stupid error message but Google voice will be selected as vice mail option.

I noticed that error too. I had to dial star something-something and then my Google voice number and all worked out okay. Tested it by dialing my cell from my work line. Thanks guys.
I wasn't convinced with Google voice and setting up a "new phone number". All I really wanted was the ability to select individual voicemails to listen to without having to listen to all of them in the order received. I went with Youmail as my voicemail service. You have to pay for voicemail transcription, which I don't use, but it does allow you to listen to your voicemail calls in whatever order you want. You can also personalize greetings, block certain callers, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if Google voice can as well. I like Youmail...now all I need is for someone to leave me a voicemail rather than texting me...

I just switched from Sprint to T-Mobile...using a Nexus 4. I got really accustomed to using Google Voice on my Sprint phone. I originally downloaded it for the visual voicemail feature, but what I ended up using it for the most was the text messaging ability. I loved texting from the Google Voice web app, the Chrome extension or the Google Voice app on my WiFi-only tablet.
When I got Google Voice all set up w/ my new T-Mobile phone, though, I realized that SMS functionality wasn't available, at least using my own phone number (as opposed to a new Google Voice number). I downloaded MightyText, which seemed like a good replacement until I realized that it only works if my phone is turned on. That's kind of a bummer, because I really want to be able to text when my phone is off, dead, etc.
Does anyone know of a good Google Voice replacement for T-Mobile, or a way to get SMS working w/ Google Voice on T-Mobile. My phone is rooted and running Cyanogen Mod 10.1. Thanks in advance!

Not sure there is a an app like this. Google voice has always been hit or miss with different carriers, so you're probably out of luck. Hopefully someone might be able to help you out though.
I have used Google Voice for my voicemail since the G1 so I know how all of this works generally. On the Nexus 5 if I select google voice for voicemail it still goes to the tmobile voicemail. I've enabled visual voicemail through customer service, cleared cache/data on the google voice app and restated the app. Does anyone else use their normal T-Mobile number with google voice? I have done this like I said since the G1, even on verizon where they say it didn't work, it did, it would throw up a warning saying it wouldn't work, but it worked just fine. The nagging voicemails I get from robot calls and others are a huge nuisance and google voice always fixed that. I've found tons of posts related to other things similar to my problem, but not this one specifically. The best I can come up with is it's related to the new dialer in kit kat. I've searched my best on these forums so I apologize if it's already been solved, I just really want this to work and tmob, nor nexus support are of any help.
Log in to your Google voice account on a pc. Go to your settings. Deactivate your Google voice mail. Follow directions to dial on your phone. Then activate your Google voice mail. Follow directions to dial in your phone. Go to your call settings on your phone. Go to call forwarding and make sure the last 3 entries are set to your Google voice mail #.

I installed hangouts dialer (not something I've previously used) and a message popped up telling me it couldn't work with the version of hangouts installed...as far as I know I have the latest version.....does anyone have voip calls working with hangouts and google voice? I'd like to setup calls but have not previously used this feature.

Did you actually check if you have the latest version of Hangouts? Pre-installed apps are rarely the current version. Open the Play store, go to Hangouts and check. If Update is an option. If so then hit the update button. Problem solved.

I have been using Hangouts - for all my calls actually - domestic and international ( still haven't popped a SIM card yet in the phone ) - and it has been working flawlessly. I am a long time Google Voice user , and hangouts hasn't worked very well in my previous phone, so I am very happy in this department with the new phone.

Yeah I set the phone to auto update in google play settings and watched Hangouts and 7 other apps update so I know it's at latest version....now that I know it's working for others I'll recheck everything since it's not an app I've used till now.
I had the phone in airplane mode with wifi enabled. It should still work with that yes?
^^^Technically you don't need to turn off Mobile Data as long as you are connected to Wi-Fi, but yes, it should work as well.
I have been using Google Hangouts since it launched (and VoIP through GrooveIP/Talktaone/Vonage for ~2 years prior). My Hangouts w/ Nexus 4 experience was good overall, but Hangouts on the Idol 3 is amazing. I think most of it has to do with the bump up to LTE coverage leading to crisper calls and less potential for interference/lag.
As for your issue, I received the same prompt until I downloaded an update. You said that you already downloaded the update, so what I would suggest is to try opening the Hangouts Dialer instead of Hangouts to launch the app initially. The two apps are downloaded separately and need to both be launched before they sync capabilities IIRC.
One bone-head move I forgot was that I downloaded Google Voice but didn't launch it to adjust settings for International calls. For my Nexus 4, I had it set to prompt whether to route an international call through Google Voice. That way, even if I made an international call using Carrier Cell towers, it would deduct minutes but I would be charged using the Google Voice's low international rates. I forgot to set it up, and the call cost like $1.20 a minute. Dropped like $80 in an hour when my overall monthly plan costs $30/mo smh.
My experience with Hangouts with the Idol3 has been so much better than the Samsung Exhibit II that I am coming from . I am finally able to get away from GrooveIP ( which was working great though ) . I suspect it has something to do with the processing power that the Idol3 offers - compared to where I am coming from. I am using it on WiFi only.
Has anyones phone started getting very hot when using Hangouts DIaler?
Also, does the reversible feature work when on the phone, Can you flip it and talk into the other side?
Well after multiple attempts I finally got the hangouts dialer to work although the person on the other end complained everything they said "echo'd" and I tried it with both speakerphone and without. To answer your question I just tried dialing a call with the phone upside down and it did fine.
I have tried making domestic as well as international calls using Hangouts - and so far no one has complained about call quality, and I have not noticed any issues from my side either. I am assuming that you were making calls to a phone number, and not a hangouts-to-hangouts call ( because that is what you need the dialer for) . I have used both the supplied ear-buds, as well as without any headset of any kind. I know that without any headsets, there are chances of an echo problem. But I have not heard any complaints in either case.
BTW - No overheating for me.
And I have not tried the speakerphone - to see if there is an echo. Once I get a chance to try that, I will update if I hear any complaints.
Haven't had any heating issues personally. I did have someone mention echoes when on speakermode though. Only tried talking through Speakermode once though

However, is there any way to get the 6045I to acknowledge the Hangouts Dialer as the default dialer for phone calls. I thought it would ask me (once I installed it) if I wanted to use it as the default. I even tried setting it with Default App by AndUtil and it doesn't recognize the Hangouts Dialer.
I have the Pixel XL 2 and have been trying to get the visual voicemail feature to work ever since I received it in October, but each time I try I get the message "Cant activate visual voicemail. You can still call to check voicemail. TRY AGAIN or CALL VOICEMAIL".
I called T-Mobile and they did everything they could on their end but the feature baked into the phone still wont work. I tried to reset the network and that didn't fix it. I tried to download the T-Mobile Visual Voicemail and it wouldnt work either -- it would open and show all my old voicemails from 2 years ago, but it just wouldn't sync. I spoke with T-Mobile tech support and the guy suggested I put the sim in my old phone to rule out that the Pixel was the problem. I switched the sim from my Pixel and put it in my old Galaxy S7 Edge and the T-Mobile app still didn't work. I would get an error stating "Failed to synchronize voicemails. Please make sure that you have connection to the data network." So I updated everything on the old phone and it still wouldnt work, so I switced the same back in the Pixel. After I switched the sim I deleted and downloaded the T-Mobile Visual Voicemail app again and it finally synced, but I dont want to use the T-Mobile Visual Voicemail app, I want to use the stock version baked into the OS. It still wont work...
Does anyone have the stock Visual Voicemail working on their Pixel XL 2?

Strange - I have a T-Mobile sim in my Pixel 2 and the voicemail works flawlessly. I had a similar setup as you where I came from an old phone that required the T-Mobile visual voicemail app, but now the Google Dialer app has it built in and didn't require any setup to get working. Voicemails appear within 30 seconds after leaving a message.
I'm not sure why this is a problem... Im beginning to think its something on the T-Mobile network or possibly a bad sim card...
One interesting fact is that the baked in VVM somehow switched itself off during all of this and when I switched it back on it still wouldnt work, but thats when the T-Mobile VVM started working... Its the strangest thing... so, disabling the baked in VVM kills the T-Mobile app and enabling it allows the T-Mobile VVM to work. No matter what I do, the Google Dialer app wont kick in.... I need suggestions that dont require a Factory reset. Perhaps the app transfer process when I set up my phone has something to do with the issue... idk
Got it sorted.
Turns out the initial setup of my Pixel caused the issue. I opted to port over all of my apps from my S7 Edge and transferred a few Samsung apps that may have compromised the VVM. Out of frustration/desperation, I did a factory reset and as soon as the phone started up Google Dialer's VVM was working, so I added all my apps back to the phone from Googles most recent backup, which included T-Mobiles VVM and something killed it again. So I did another factory reset and this time I reviewed each and every app to install from the backup and found quite a few Samsung apps, so I omitted them along with T-Mobiles VVM app and now all is well. Im leary on attempting to install the T-Mobile VVM again, but I do miss the VM's being transcribed from voice to text....
Any recommendations on a good app that can convert VM's to text?
The transcription service from T-Mobile costs about $4/mo. So unless you were paying for it, you were only getting the 30 day trial for free. If you use any other app, you'll lose the VVM integration in the phone dialer.

Yeah, I recently added the $4/mo service thinking that the reason why VVM didnt work was because I needed to pay... I took it off, so I guess I'll just keep the stock VVM.

While the TM VVM app was installed, the built-in dialer VVM didn't exist. It just wasn't there.
I deleted (tried this twice) and a few hours later the built-in Google Phone app dialer VVM was there. But, it wasn't transcribing, just showing and playing the voice mails. Then, it started transcribing them. Then, a few days later it stopped.
After trying both, I like the TM VVM better. It's bigger, and you can sort them.

OK, wait a minute...
It appears Google put a setting in to enable transcripiton and it's turned off by default. Lets turn it on and try again.
So, to clarify....
The Google VVM setting doesn't appear unless you delete the T-Mobile VVM app.
Then, it takes a few hours up to a day to show up in the Phone app settings.
Previously it would just transcribe.
After it stopped trascribing it appeared that Google added a setting to enable transcription.

The free and easy way to get transcribed VVM is to setup Google voice, then use the dialer codes for TMo to forward your calls to your voice number. Unlimited VMs, and you can check them from any device or PC that GV is installed on. And, free is always good
I had to uninstall the non-native visual voicemail app I downloaded and clear the cache of the phone app to get the option to appear in settings. It kept some of my voicemails too which was unexpected.
My issue seems to come back after every security update... I'm back to square one and it seems that the only resolution is to factory reset my phone and then it starts working again until the next update... ugh!
This is the best Android phone I've ever owned, but the user experience to date has been the most frustrating. The ability to make and receive phone calls as well as voicemails is the backbone of any phone... why the heck is this so difficult!?! I swear I have a defective phone or a faulty sim card, because I cant understand why I don't receive my voicemails!
so...to remind everyone I also have a Pixel 2 XL. I was also having the problem of t-Mobile VVM not synching. I finally got it to work.
First, if you have st-Mobile VVM fon your phone, even if not turned on, it will cause the VVM in Googles built dialer to disappear.
I noticed at the same time that I signed up for the Android P Beta, that a new version of T-Mobiles VVM appeared on Google Play. So, first, give the new version a try. I did that update at the same time I switched to Android P Beta, so I don't 'know which helped.
First, clear the cash and data for the old T-Mobile VMM, then uninstall it.
Also, I have found that certain combo's of plans with T-Mobile are not compatible with VM to text. I found that the newer VMM worked, but the feature you have to pay for to convert to text to read it wasn't compatible with my plan. This was per the T-Mobile CSR's. I could listen to VMM, but not read it.
The built-in Google VMM would transcribe to text, but, it didn't seem as robust. Many times it would say it couldn't transcribe. Also, the T-Mobile VMM has more features...easier to delete, you can sort by date, number, etc. You can delete multiples at one time etc.
So, I like T-Mobile VMM better, but since it can't transcribe to text for me, I went back to Google built in one.

I switched over from AT&T to T-Mobile and couldn't get VVM to work so I installed the T-Mobile VVM app and then set it up. Once it was setup I did exactly as you described - uninstalled the T-Mobile VVM app then went and cleared cache on the native phone app and finally the VVM setting showed up in the phone app settings. Turned it on and it works perfectly, thanks!
