No top display on V30 - LG V20 Guides, News, & Discussion

According to evleaks:
https://twitter.com/evleaks/status/799925043623034880
I'm thinking the entire screen will be AMOLED and you can select the ticker on the top or bottom.

There was a reply from someone in that thread where they assumed the "2nd screen" was going away but Mr. Bliss says, "Why? You have no idea what they're replacing it with."
He just says goodbye to the ticker not so much the top display.

Amoled. Best way to utilize everything about v20. Probably increase battery life about 20% or more.

Except won't we have burn-in issues with areas of the screen that don't frequently change like, say, the ticker area (or whatever is going to replace it)?

I don't believe anything evleaks says or publishes. He ruined any potential credibility he had a few years ago.

Well he was pretty much spot on for the LG V20 release date. He's got a hell of a lot more credibility than most other 'leakers'

If lg is smart they would put ticker part of screen in different t spots automatically or customizable.

Newer Captivates have brighter, less blue screens

After some research and recieving my replacement Captivate (I broke my old one. Check the thread titled "To all new Captivate owners" for pictures and the story), I noticed that compared to my old Captivate, my new one is brighter, and the screen temperature is much more neutral. The pictures have also come out much better than my old Captivate and have rivaled and overtaken my point-and-shoot.
The device seems much faster (on JF6 -- which i network unlocked my phone on ) and does not lag at all. The battery seems to hold much better because I turned the phone on when it had 6% battery and it held that charge for almost an hour of me setting up the device at max brightness and dropped down to 4% after I disconnected from WiFi. Before, the charge would drop down 5 or even 10 points. But of course, i'll "recalibrate" the battery.
The network reception definitely seems a full one to two bars higher and the contrast of the screen has vastly improved to boot.
Sadly, the GPS still is a pile of crap and my broken Captivate still has the better GPS signal and gains a full non-AGPS powered lock within 16 seconds on the JPK/JI6 Hybrid ROM.
These changes seem to indicate that the Voodoo ColorFix mod that is supposibly coming for our Captivates would be a YMMV modification since the screens apparently have changed. I'll update this thread once I flash JH7 through Kies Mini and see if the speed has gotten better, or the battery works better, or of the GPS works at all.
Cheers,
I got my captivate just over a month ago. I was reading some of the complaints about the blueish screen and I don't see any of that in mine. Maybe they revised the hardware a bit. I don't really ever use GPS so I can't comment on that.

Where did you get yours from? I got mine about a week after it was released and I've experienced almost none of the problems that people commonly report with this phone. It ran pretty quick out of the box, the screen is nice and bright without any noticeable blue hue, and GPS has always been great. I got mine from amazon.com, perhaps it's some common retailer most people got their phone from that received a bad batch of captivates?
Mine I got at my local AT&T store. It wasn't a authorized retailer but a plain old AT&T Store.
I read somewhere that Samsung was likely no longer going to be shipping Super AMOLED screens on the Galaxy S line and replacing them with Super TFT LCD. Perhaps this is what you are seeing? Granted, it seems to be mostly rumor based, but that's like believing the OTA update fixed our GPS.

I got the box the phone came in and it specifically says Super AMOLED on it. If its not, its false advertising and I'd be pissed. This phone seems too good in the sun to not be a AMOLED

I got my captivate 5 days ago and the white balance is definitely on the cool side.
I ordered my through the premiere store from AT&T on launch day and the screen is gorgeous. I haven't noticed any blueish tint.

when the display is turned off, does it have the blueish tint from certain angles?

I just noticed something troubling, I mean really troubling.

Do you realize the menus are now all in white?
Are they mad?
AMOLED's have terrible white, and their whites are never accurate.
Do they want our screens to die faster or something?
There's a reason previous Touchwiz-es all have black menus.
An advantage to black menus is that AMOLED's use absolutely no power for black
and almost twice the power for whites compared to LCD's
So what the hell are they thinking?

They are thinking more letters from the OCD types.
How long does anyone here keep a device? 6 months? a year? Does anyone really use this as a professional device for Photography or video work? Or just snapshots and video logs where all that can be fixed with SW. As long as they have replaceable batteries, and people can charge every night I don;t think battery life is a concern. The Note 2 battery life is insane for such a large phone. I have never used my spare. I was using it at about 4PM on my S2 previous to the Note.
Troll more.
I'm not 100% sure but I think that it might be changeable. I've seen some of the same pictures show in both black and white.
Edit: or its a mixture of Black and white menus....
But either way.... easily changed.
Thats why you gain root and wait for a rom.

Glad it's easily changed. But why did Samsung went to White?
I noticed the white menus too, and I really don't like it.
I hope it's switchable. And I hope when updates finally come to the S3 that they don't change over to white menus.
I usually just use custom ROMs, but I had considered going back to stock if there was an update.

Things have changed a lot since the AMOLED display on the original Galaxy S. The OLED's last much longer, power efficiency is drastically improved and their screen tunings have also improved. And about accurate whites, that is simply not true. The Galaxy S3 had a more accurate white point than the HTC One according to DisplayMate's own tests, even with the S3's green push.

The answer's hiding in plain sight.
That and S-600 should be 20% more efficient than the SGS3 and Octa potentially more so. If you want to worry about something the additional sensors, especially the one that allows the display to recognize something hovering over it, probably use more power than the white menus do. There's an option under power saving to turn off the sensing of the S Pen when it's not removed on the N2. The great thing about the white menus is that, in direct sunlight, it's a ton easier to read dark text on a white background.

There are 100MM Galaxy devices of various forms that have been in people's hands for years. The percentage complaining about burn-in is I'd guess less than single digit percentages. So it can definitely happen but I'd guess that it's not happening in large volume based on average screen-on time or it's so subtle people don't even notice.
P.S. - With your GIANT "One" signature you'll be viewed as a Palestinian in Jerusalem on the SGS4 forum.

Coming from G3, almost didn't go to to LG because of it. This thing is a whole different world of awesome. Things that overheated and throttled my G3 don't even warm this thing up, and best part, no data issues going from WiFi to mobile!!! Love the second screen too. Now when I'm navigating and streaming Bluetooth at the same time, I can change tracks without leaving nav app, notifications don't interrupt games/videos...Extremely happy so far!

Need to point out that realistically it is only a 5 inch screen.
With controls and second screen. You effectively have only a 5 inch screen with a whole lot of bulk. Granted the internals are great. Although it is not in any way a 5.7 inch screen. Great phone, but let down on such a massive phone with effectively no more screen area than a S4.
Not to mention. NO blinking notification and no temperature or humidity sensors. Infered is marginal at best.

Umm, no, it's not a 5" screen. The main screen is 5.7" minus how much space the buttons at the bottom take up, which is like any other phone not made my Samsung.
The second screen is a completely independent 2.1" screen. Please don't spread misinformation.
And they didn't put a led light because that is what the second screen is partly for. And if you want all those sensors, get a Samsung.
Sounds like you need to do more research before you buy a $600+ smartphone only to be disappointed for you own lack of research.

Actually, if you go get yourself a tape measure, the 5.7 doesn't include the second screen... And if you're really tech savvy, you can hide the navigation bar when you aren't using it... So on both of those counts, you are wrong... Also, all your notifications appear on the second screen, which to me is more convenient than a blinking light, since I don't even need to open my phone to check my notifications. And also, the infrared controls my stuff from anywhere in the living room, which works fine for me... Considering Samsung no longer has this option, it's a plus. Other than that, sorry to ruin your phone bash, have a super day.

This phone made me love it. My G3 started getting the BSOD and honestly I'd planned switch to a Samsung S7 Edge in March, or whenever it is released. Went to the store to try to get a used G4 just to hold me off until then but they didn't have any. Walked out with the V10. Unlocked bootloader, flashed TWRP and SU and have been loving it ever since. I'm not really sure why because aside from the standard faster processor, gig more memory and slightly larger screen, it wasn't that much different from my G3 but I've really grown to like this thing. Second screen is the phone's first bullet point but it's kind of gimmicky and I don't really have a use for it, but besides that stuff just seems to work better on the V10. It doesn't have Bluetooth connection issues like my G3 did, phone doesn't heat a small room under heavy use, and I'm not clearing apps to free up 200mb more memory all day. Call quality is great, quick charge is awesome, and the 5.7" screen is really, really, really nice. A louder and clearer speaker is the only thing the G3 did better but the V10's will do. So I've warmed up to my step child and really not thinking about the S6/S7 at the moment.

I agree with you. I come from the nexus 6 and so far I love this phone but the lack of custom Rom and development is kind of ?.
Bought mine during launch week, and was disappointed it had major issues: second-screen bleed was bad, and the speaker sounded really distorted. Then a month later the wireless charging chip died.
T-Mobile replaced it with a brand new unit manufactured in late December and it is absolutely perfect. No bleed at all, speaker is crystal-clear. Loving it, especially the camera!
Started out with Lg G2 d800,loved that phone sold it and got lg g3 D850 awesome phone.. Finally decided to get the v10,its very smooth, fast, beautiful display, whenever i take pictures my friends are stunted by how beautiful and rich the photos come out. Manual controls on camera and video, dual front face camera, removable battery , sdcard support, slick and premium design over kill. This is by far the best device i have ever owned since day one 'htc touch pro2' ... Im really impressed with this phone...
I upgraded from a Nexus 6. My first experience with LG (Android wise) was with the G2 and the Flex. So going to the V10 was easy. My only caveat is the fact that I moved back to 5.1.1 when I've been on 6.0.1 for a bit. Can't wait for some decent roms to truly use this phones full potential.
I almost gave up on androind OS after two generations of Samsung Galaxy devices, Note 3 and until today Note 4. The update from Kitkat ruined the Note 4 experience completely for me, if anything left me frustrated. Ive reached an age whereby I just want something to do as it says on the box, typing on the Note 4 became a nightmare for me, tiny space bar mistyping all the time. Wifes Iphone 6plus was appealing but thought Id try another brand of Droid. Earlier today walked out of the T Mobile store with a new V10.

AMOLED screen burn-in

I'm using Waze app every single day for about 1.5 hour.
in the past when i had galaxy S4, after 2 month of daily use, i noticed on white pages i still see all the static banners and buttons of waze.
baisically, using Waze in daily basis, burn-in my screen in the static area of the app like the up and down banners, speed meter etc...
Can it happen also in my new galaxy s8+? what to you think? did the amoled technology haven't changed a lot in the past 4 or 5 years?
There is a new feature in Waze called battery saver, it dims the screen when you are over a certain speed and a certain distance from the next instruction, that might help with it.
Though to be honest I use it for about the same amount of time everyday and don't even think about any burn in, its definitely not something that I've noticed happening on my phone so far

Definitely can still happen on the s8+. I'd recommend not having your screen excessively bright while static images are on screen if you can help it. It's a pain but this is just an unfortunate trade-off with these beautiful screens.

I'm sorry if you dont like it but its the truth. I absolutely love the Samsung phones so I'm not against the phone. I've had the Note, S3, S4, S5, S6E, S7E and now the S8+.
I'm the first person to correct somebody wrongly bashing these phones but in this case it is what it is mate. Its well documented and accepted as fact that screen burn in on Amoled is more prevalent than some other display technologies. You need to be a little bit more mindful with Amoled if you want to keep the screen looking nice with heavy use.

Based on your first response you obviously didn't grasp mine at all whatsoever. I wasn't comparing Amoled directly to any other screen technology but the fact remains that the prevelance of screen burn in is generally higher than other screen types in general. That's not just conjecture on my part.
Its accepted fact. Also I'd appreciate it if you dropped the childish, rude and flippant attitude towards me. I was simply responding to your straw man argument.

There was one week where I used it excessively. And I kept the screen full bright. When I saw the screen burn in with the arrow of waze navigation. I started looking up on the Internet to solve the burn in issue somehow. That's when I found out that it's a common issue on amoled screens apparently. And the only way to solve it was to send it back to Samsung for a repair or replacement.

Yeah unfortunately its one of those things that you just have to be mindful of, even when you're not on full brightness.
I was pretty lucky with most of my galaxy phones especially considering how heavily I used them, although my S7E was an exception.
I still have the phone and after just 13 months you can clearly see discoloration on the screen and admittedly very feint burn in on UI elements ie. the status bar. The screen discoloration is pretty bad and perfectly matches the YouTube app, where the video is playing up top and the static white comment section below put uneven "wear" on my screen. I'm now trying to make a habit to watch longer YouTube videos in fullscreen to avoid a similar result.

And the only way to solve it was to send it back to Samsung for a repair or replacement.

So they replaced it for you? If it is so common on amoled display, they still replace or repair burned in screens?

Yes they did. I rang samsung and told them about the issue. They got the phone picked up from my house. I was expecting them to probably just replace the screen but to my shock they sent me a brand new sealed s7 edge.
Sent from my SM-G955F using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Amoled is notorious for burn-ins. I would avoid using any app for prolonged periods of time.

It's not a trade-off. It can happen with virtually ANY type of display. LCD, LED, OLED, etc. No mobile phone display is immune.

I work for a carrier and never in my 14 years have I seen a LCD screen burn in I have however seen multiple AMOLED panels with burn in especially demo phones (yes on all day rolling content but so are the LCD models) this is a risk with organic displays to his point is true it is a trade off whichever way you sugercoat it

We can hide the notch.

Per Google they are adding the option.

well, technically, they arent adding it, the option is already available in Pie.

I really do hope they refine its implementation though. Moving icons down below is less than ideal.
I hope there's an option to half-hide it too. I could deal with half of that ridiculous notch.

so I went to best buy this evening to check it out.
unfortunately is was pretty crippled and I could not enable developer options (needed a password), so I couldnt get a full idea of how it looks hidden.
having said that, it really doesnt look as bad as it does in pictures online. however, it is still big.
It is not so visible on home screen if you use a dark wallpaper. Some apps hide it automagically, which keeps the status icons on the top, which is exactly how I wish it would be when hidden. I will probably make a photoshop overlay for wallpapers that will hide the notch with status up high, as I dont really use the live walls or anything like that, though I think devs will figure out a way to do that as well.
Viewing pics and video full screen it (the notch) will bother me very much.
Unfortunately the phone had no internet or cell signal, and of course connectivity settings were not available.
The screen to me is a HUGE improvement over the 2XL it looks fantastic. Even the non-XL was very impressive screen wise. Speakers do indeed sound louder, though I could only play the on-board ringtones etc, which still only preview out of one speaker.
Sadly hard to get a full hands on with it being crippled, but I do feel better about pre-ordering it than I did before I checked it out.

I just saw jonathan morison do a youtube review and mentioned this app.....its a great idea and use of the upper screen space. I was wondering if all the notch hiding will cause any screen burn-in.
Just installed Natcho Notch and tried it ... i likes it!

That's what I will be doing when I get mine and at least then I can pick and choose between notch/notchless (not crotchless that's something altogether different lol)
Been using Nacho Notch on my 3xl since I got it on Wednesday. Just turned it off to see if there was any difference in color on a white background. Didn't see a thing. Maybe it will the longer it is used, but my phone screen is pretty much on all night because I leave Netflix running when I fall asleep. I'll learn real quick if it does in fact have burn-in or image retention (OLED screen problem).

I usually watch a show when I go to bed. Half the time I fall asleep and wake up realizing I am a few episodes into a series.
Honestly doesn't bother me much (Well, at least it will until I can get root and install an xposed module that cuts charging off and starts charging again when the battery gets slow, or allow you to change the rate at which the phone charges). I used the module on my Pixel 2 XL and the battery was just as good as it was when I first got it 9 months later. Sadly, can't remember the module name, but it makes the chance of reducing your phones battery charge much smaller and livable with.
