Spyware on Honor 8? - Honor 8 Questions & Answers

quick search doesn't seem to turn anything up related to this on my phone (L04)

From reading the article, it sounds like the software was intended solely for phones sold in the Chinese market, and the wrong version was put on US phones manufactured by Blu. The only mention of Huawei in the article is that Adups makes software for those phones, but it doesn't say that any Huawei or Honor phones were affected. The software in question may have only been on lower-end/lower cost models also, based on what the article says about it.
Also, I just checked my phone and did not see the Adups software anywhere on the device (FRD-L04). The folders you would be looking for are "com.adups.fota" and "com.adups.fota.sysoper", according to Android Police.

It was coming. They've failed miserably in the region.
Since quite some time in India, their phones have not been available for sale in brick and mortar stores. For some reason they've been a flop here.
It's a shame really. Their hardware is second to none. With proper software, including update policies, and good marketing, they could have eaten competition for breakfast.

Has anybody opened Motorola India's 'fan' page on FB, I did and it was more of 'toofan' page than anything else, LOL!
and interesting enough i have posted this on their wall:
"Having seen the comments here on FB, I would suggest you either to 1. Change the service provider or 2. Close down your FB fan page."
and they have gone a step further, I guess, closing the entire operations.
One good thing is that reportedly "they will be providing service to the existing customers" and that doesnt matter as redington will still be in charge of that care!
Looking back, my first mobile ever was a Motorola, a C350 in 2003 when mobile phones with color screen were still considered premium in india, instead of many available brands and models I went ahead and bought a moto, result? Terribly disappointed.
And after almost a decade, I did the same mistake again, call me stupid!
Are their products bad in India? No, I have spoken with many people regarding Motorola and sum up the conversations with this quote from a store sales guy:
"Motorola mobiles are great, until you find a problem in it."
When asked to elaborate he said, the after sales is terrible, and here in India when you find a problem with your mobile, they rush the store where they bought it, the store directs them to the service center. But with the service so good, the stores started to ignore Moto products, and here is the end result.
I have said these things from a perceptive of a common user not from our point of view, the tech buffs who need their mobile to be running on latest OS or wanted the bootloader to be unlocked, If I start there, there will be more bashing.
PS: On their FB page, they have posted some 'exciting' news, that they were going to release Electrify 2 in India! So any taker out there?

Yeah, the display is an issue, mine has a dull spot in the middle of the display and only visible when there is a grey background, came to know that this is evident in AT&T's A2 more, and heard those guys saying they get it replaced when they see a dull spot, we? we don't, specially now that they stopped producing A2s and even if they replace they will give us a refurbished one rather than new, why take risk, I can live with that dull spot, in fact I have many in my life itself,
and coming to the hardware, I have already said this and probably say 1000 times that I am really happy with the hardware and the general processing power of this mobile, and I have already quoted that I hate SGS II for two reasong 1. Touchwiz and 2. Poor build quality, yeah we can simply get rid of the touchwiz interface with custom launchers but the build quality?? we cant do, other than may be putting it into an otterbox.
I will consider all good, if moto does unlock the bootloader, it will open up the world of opportunities, JB, Keylime prime or whatever we want (speculation!!). Or simply a good bye gift ICS!!
Electify 2?? it is a child of Droid Razr and Atrix 2, it will be interesting to see how they promote it, as a world phone or as a TATA INDICOM CDMA or Reliance CDMA only mobile.
UPDATE: Motorola Mobility has reached out to us with an official statement.
Although we are consolidating about a third of our facilities globally, and slimming our operation in India as you reported, we continue to have a significant presence in several key markets in Asia-Pacific in addition to Korea and Australia. This includes, among others, mainland China, which remains one of our main R&D hubs (and where I am based). We should be able to share more information once we’re further through the reorganization process, but Asia-Pacific is an important part of Motorola Mobility’s future.
We know you've heard a lot about the changes at Motorola Mobility. We'll continue to honor our warranties and provide support. Here are the various hotlines should you need technical assistance for our products.

Unlocking phones are prohibited beginning today

Pardon me if this has been posted before, or if this is the wrong forum.
Beginning yesterday, it's illegal to unlock your phone to use on another carrier. This law applies to all phones purchased Jan 26 or later.
Here's the article: www.makeuseof.com/tag/new-us-law-prohibits-the-unlocking-of-cell-phones-starting-saturday-updates/
And here's the petition to have it undone, https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/make-unlocking-cell-phones-legal/1g9KhZG7#thank-you=p

[Q] Is the Carrier version unlocked?

I have scoured the net but find conflicting answers. Is the Tmobile version of the Nexus 5 locked down to T Mobile? I know the Play Store version is unlocked (as with all Nexus devices obviously), but what about the carrier versions?
(Note: I mistakenly posted this earlier in the general forum by mistake and am currently trying to delete it. Apologies for the double post)

1st, you must not have searched too hard, lol.
2nd, its the exact same phone(16gb) that you buy at the play store or tmobile. all they do is sell it, they do not add any software or bloatware to it.
they are all carrier unlocked. you can buy it at tmobile and use it on att if you want.
There is no carrier version. There is north America d820 and rest of world d821 versions only which are both unlocked. Carriers sell only these versions so no, nothing from t-mobile Germany, UK or US is locked

1. As stated Im finding conflicting answers so your attitude isnt necessary or called for. This is why people look down on tech guys online because of the holier than thou attitude.
2 and 3, can you cite a source for this information. Without a citation you're just another voice in the crowd? I'm trying to find out either way for certain.

The carrier version is the exact same phone you can buy on Google. They may try to convince you otherwise, it's in their best interest to keep you as a customer, but it's the same phone. Same firmware, same everything.

It's a known fact that all Nexus 5's are carrier unlocked no matter where you purchased it from.
The only way it will be locked is if you purchased it from T-Mobile, Sprint, etc and you're on a payment plan and you stopped making payments or if it's reported stolen then the carrier will lock/blacklist the phone making it unusable.

Not to bad so far... It's getting there slowly.
I wrote a message to dbrand last week. They aren't anticipating it because as they said to me in the email, there wasn't a large want or anticipation for this phone. The more the people write them requesting, the more it might be a possibility.

Smartwatch Suggestion

Looking for a suggestion on a smartwatch. I'll be pairing it with an android phone(s9+ or maybe a71 in the near future) and would like to have heart rate monitor and support to recieve all my notifications would be nice. In particular I need notifications for workplace messenger by Facebook primarily. Being able to respond to notifications would be nice but not totally required. I'd like other heart monitoring functions if possible but realize I can only expect so much from a $50 smartwatch!

I'm legit curious.. Am I asking to much for $50.. I mean I can hop on Amazon and see several options that seems to fit the bill but given the nature of xda I figured I'd reach out here to see if and of the watches I had looked at might pop up in conversation. I feel like I'm asking for a reasonable trade off here in what I can or can't sacrifice, but if not, enlighten me what's reasonable to expect from a $50 smartwatch?
