I have scoured the net but find conflicting answers. Is the Tmobile version of the Nexus 5 locked down to T Mobile? I know the Play Store version is unlocked (as with all Nexus devices obviously), but what about the carrier versions?
(Note: I mistakenly posted this earlier in the general forum by mistake and am currently trying to delete it. Apologies for the double post)

1st, you must not have searched too hard, lol.
2nd, its the exact same phone(16gb) that you buy at the play store or tmobile. all they do is sell it, they do not add any software or bloatware to it.
they are all carrier unlocked. you can buy it at tmobile and use it on att if you want.
There is no carrier version. There is north America d820 and rest of world d821 versions only which are both unlocked. Carriers sell only these versions so no, nothing from t-mobile Germany, UK or US is locked

1. As stated Im finding conflicting answers so your attitude isnt necessary or called for. This is why people look down on tech guys online because of the holier than thou attitude.
2 and 3, can you cite a source for this information. Without a citation you're just another voice in the crowd? I'm trying to find out either way for certain.

The carrier version is the exact same phone you can buy on Google. They may try to convince you otherwise, it's in their best interest to keep you as a customer, but it's the same phone. Same firmware, same everything.

It's a known fact that all Nexus 5's are carrier unlocked no matter where you purchased it from.
The only way it will be locked is if you purchased it from T-Mobile, Sprint, etc and you're on a payment plan and you stopped making payments or if it's reported stolen then the carrier will lock/blacklist the phone making it unusable.

I hope this is legit. I called AT&T regarding this yesterday and everyone I talked too had no clue what I was talking about and all of them think I want to unlock my phone to use on other carriers. I tried explaining I am talking about software development and if I wanted a phone for other carriers I would have bought the unlocked international version and assured them that I wont be leaving AT&T (10+ years with them) and all I get is, "Well we can unlock your phone today if you pay the contract fee of $325...." sigh.

I emailed HTC asking about the bootloader, and received this reply:
I understand that you are upset about not being able to unlock the bootloader on your device.
As is stated on the developer website:
“HTC is committed to assisting customers in unlocking bootloaders for HTC devices. However, certain models may not be unlockable due to operator (carrier) restrictions. We continue to work with our partners on this, check back often for ongoing updates about unlockable devices.”
I’m sorry, but this is outside of our control.

I ran into roughly the same thing with AT&T and the Skyrocket. AT&T/Samsung wouldn't give out unlock codes, kernel source, do anything for the dev community until the initial exclusivity period was over. Afterwards it was business as normal.
I'd imagine that the HOX is going to be the same. Once something "else" comes out, and the HOX isn't "one of the phones to have", they'll loosen the restrictions and will let us do what we want.
The Galaxy S3 is a bit different. It's not really "exclusive" to any carrier in the sense the Skyrocket was, so they probably had to change tactics a bit.
I also work for att. I haven't heard officially about the boot loader being unlocked, but the htc rep was in the store the other day dropping off signs for our HOX display and when I asked about it he said from what he has heard from people above him something was in the works to be able to unlock it, but he also stated nothing is official at this point.

Yeah, that's what our HTC rep said, as well. Nothing official or solid, just rumblings from within the higher-ups at HTC.
I have a premier account and just got an email from ATT stating.
"Thank you for ordering the Samsung Galaxy S® 4 from AT&T. We are excited to announce that we are able to ship devices earlier than originally expected. Customers who preordered their smartphone early can begin receiving it as soon as April 25th."

This is why Google releases Nexus devices. Technically most carrier devices aren't even meant for development unless noted. Development phones are provided with unlocked or unlockable bootloaders. They are under absolutely no obligation to provide you such feature with a non-development device. Quit your whining child.
Here is a possible solution...chat with an att rep, tell them that ur going abroad and need it unlocked..they will most likely provide it for you..unlock it and sell it to get about 500$ ish.. Buy a i9500 or something online like eBay and be set..

If someone pays $500-$600 for a phone, they should be able to do with it as they wish. AT&T should just warn the buyer that bricked phones will not be warrantied and leave the bootloader as it was. But they chose to push an OTA update, with a locked bootloader, to our phones. That was a real B***h move on their part.

No one said he couldn't unlock the bootloader - everything is crack-able. Just because it's locked doesn't mean he can't unlock it, in theory. He just needs the brains to do so.
That's like buying a new car and saying, "uggh wtf! The turbo should be running 30psi, not 10!!"... you pay some money to a tuner, and bam.. it's faster now. Same goes with a locked phone - there are devs out there that can do this - I'm sure for the right price they'll put in the work and unlock it.
Effing people expect life to be served on a silver platter to them and on top it, to be free. Grow up!
Oh look, another one of these threads...
Here is the reason why they do this.
They want government contracts. The government 'DoD' specifically is choosing Android over iOS because iOS more closed down than Android even with locked bootloaders. They have to show really good security. Making something this hard to break shows that security.

Please refrain from name calling.
Now, AT&T owns the bootloaders. They are not open source. They make Google implement them on our devices because they are Google's client/customer. Google has to abide by what their clients want or they will lose that client. Since the bootloaders are not open source, AT&T is not obligated by any means be it themselves or through Google to unlock or provide a way to unlock the bootloaders. Furthermore, AT&T can afford to lose the few customers that care about bootloaders being unlocked or unlockable because what they lose in public customer revenue, they will more than make up for in private government contracts. They know this and have compensated for it.
Should they handle it differently? Yes. But they will not lose much of anything if they keep it as is.

My dad's going to India to visit family, and a cousin asked to see if I could find someone selling a used Nexus 4. Or something that had a bad ESN but was unlocked, so that he could still use it in India.
During my search, I came across an ad on Craigslist..where a guy is selling a Nexus 5...says it's unlocked and will not work here but will work elsewhere in the world.
So I asked him if it had a bad esn, and he said No, it's disabled by Google.
I use an iPhone and I'm not sure what that means...I did a lot of searching and came across this site.
And the only place I saw "disabled nexus" being referred to, was with people who had their nexus phones stolen during delivery...and Google then disabled the phone and refunded the money.
So, I'm faced with a moral dilemma that the phone could have been stolen OR the guy himself lied to Google about it and got a refund and is now trying to make some money.
But the price is good...and I'd really like to buy it.
So..my question is... Will a new unlocked Nexus 5 that has been disabled/deactivated by Google, work in India?
Or would the deactivation be worldwide? Because no point getting a good price, if the phone won't work!
I really don't know where to turn to.
I'd appreciate the help.
thanks.
The point of disabling a device is making it useless. Why would it work anywhere? What's the price? The price on a brand new one is already low enough, how low can this be? If it's too good to be true, it is.

The reason I posted that question..was because I don't know what "disabled" means. At first I thought, it meant like having a bad esn.
But if it means turning the phone into a brick that won't start or operate, then that's that.
The price is $300 for a 32gb Nexus.

hi folks
am after a little help please. i am looking to buy the 64gb version of this phone if i can get an invite. but that is NOT what this thread is about. Im a little confused over the pricing structure and was hoping some folks could explain it to me and maybe say what they did?
Ok so i looked here http://oneplus.net/one and the price shows as $349 which converts to about £215. great that looks like an awesome price for this spec. Im sold and now i want one.
However, this morning whilst doing my usual reading and searching i happened upon this http://oneplus.net/uk/one which shows the price as £269?!?! Ok so now i am confused. there appears no difference between the phones linked and they are both apparently from the same official source. SO why the huge price difference??? Could i not just buy from the first link and save 20% or would they not ship the phone to england if i buy from that page, or worst still would i get hit with huge custom charges? If it just means the shipping takes longer than the price would justify the wait.
Sorry for the questions but im really on the edge about buying this phone and for £215 im sold but at £269 well thats a different sale i need to make to the missus lol.
Thanks for looking and for any help advice you can offer,

So is there no one here from the uk that has brought this phone?

Of course there is they just have not seen your thread. Honestly the price is still great regardless and the trickery you are trying to achieve is not worth it. Go ahead and pull the trigger

helpful? How could it be?
My question was why are there two different prices listed for this phone one in gbp and one in dollars. And can i or anyone in the uk purchase the phone and pay in dollars? If its possible would anyone here know if we would have to pay customs duty?
With that restated you have attempted to derail my thread by making it about using the search function.
The first is a link to a comment from opo saying this phone can be purchased in the uk.
Your second link is an off topic thread for folks in the uk. Both not even from xda
The third link is about using the phone on threes network.
The fourth link is about someone asking where the phone can be purchased and appears to end with folks talking about selling/buying on gumtree.
The fifth is about someone asking about how long their order may be in the delivery process.
Would you care to elaborate how that in anyway shape or form answers my question? Or can you answer my question? Or would your searching powers be able to show me the link to that answer?
If not i dont really get what you hoped to achieve with your two posts. And would humbly ask you to please reply no further.
I have just had to waste 5 minutes of my life to respond to your comments which im never gonna get back. If you dont like/agree or have any useful info to provide to a topic please just ignore it!
Apologies to anyone else that has had to read these comments they are pointless and achieve nothing. They will also undoutedly prevent me from getting an answer to my original question.

They are UK related links with individuals from your area that would be better equipped to ask your question.. This is why I posted it but derailing was not my intention. I felt my info was helpful if you did not then OK....

then fair play and i thank you for your help.
ok guys just in case anyone else comes across this issue i think i know the coup now.
I went online to order the phone via an invite i was kindly given by a member here. It automatically took me to the price in us dollars so i went through the order process and when i tried to pay via paypal. It said i was in the wrong store and it forced me to the uk store and to then pay in gbp. So it did indeed ultimately cost me the extra 20%. I know i could have got it sent to a pal of mine in america but i didn't.
Hope this clarifies the situation for anyone else wondering.
It also applies for €.
Its pretty clear the oneplus/UK site 269 pretty simple? In us its 349 something like that. There's a difference in price because of different vat etc.
I bought a one plus one I'm in UK I managed to understand....
