This is encouraging. The vp I spoke to didn't know what a bootloader was.
Hopefully she heard this from an official source and isn't speculating. But this is a little reassuring.

I hope this is legit. I called AT&T regarding this yesterday and everyone I talked too had no clue what I was talking about and all of them think I want to unlock my phone to use on other carriers. I tried explaining I am talking about software development and if I wanted a phone for other carriers I would have bought the unlocked international version and assured them that I wont be leaving AT&T (10+ years with them) and all I get is, "Well we can unlock your phone today if you pay the contract fee of $325...." sigh.

Perhaps a psycholigical move to get you to pass on motivation to potential customers. Increase sales. Hopefully im wrong but a lot of people in higher up positions had their tricks to earn them that spot

I emailed HTC asking about the bootloader, and received this reply:
I understand that you are upset about not being able to unlock the bootloader on your device.
As is stated on the developer website:
“HTC is committed to assisting customers in unlocking bootloaders for HTC devices. However, certain models may not be unlockable due to operator (carrier) restrictions. We continue to work with our partners on this, check back often for ongoing updates about unlockable devices.”
I’m sorry, but this is outside of our control.

I ran into roughly the same thing with AT&T and the Skyrocket. AT&T/Samsung wouldn't give out unlock codes, kernel source, do anything for the dev community until the initial exclusivity period was over. Afterwards it was business as normal.
I'd imagine that the HOX is going to be the same. Once something "else" comes out, and the HOX isn't "one of the phones to have", they'll loosen the restrictions and will let us do what we want.
The Galaxy S3 is a bit different. It's not really "exclusive" to any carrier in the sense the Skyrocket was, so they probably had to change tactics a bit.
I also work for att. I haven't heard officially about the boot loader being unlocked, but the htc rep was in the store the other day dropping off signs for our HOX display and when I asked about it he said from what he has heard from people above him something was in the works to be able to unlock it, but he also stated nothing is official at this point.
Sent from my One X using xda app-developers app
Yeah, that's what our HTC rep said, as well. Nothing official or solid, just rumblings from within the higher-ups at HTC.

Ok I just got a random call from some guy from HTC, said his name was Eric but would not give a last name. He wanted to "follow up" on me saying I was unhappy about the whole S-Off/Bootloader thing. I he kept skirting the question of "Are we going to get out bootloaders unlocked or not?" He finally told me that they were waiting on Corporate to let "Them" know WHEN they would be unlocked, so I asked him to confirm that he just said at some point they would be unlocked, and he back tracked really fast and said IF they would be unlocked, and his dept. did not expect to know anything for a "month or two", but HTC was watching Twitter and Facebook and know the customers are unhappy, and they strive to make thier customers happy...yada ..yada..yada....I told him at this point a simple Yes or No would make me happy, but we all know I didn't get that either. So has anyone else got a call from "Eric" or one of his friends over at HTC? Maybe if they work together they can find thier asses from a hole in the ground!
I honestly feel bad for Eric. Low level outbound call center representative. His whole job is centered around contacting angry customers and trying to pacify their concerns without giving straight answers (which he probably doesn't even truly have).
I'm glad you didn't claim to tear him a new asshole or anything. Bottom line, let's hope the bootloaders are unlocked soon and Eric can take a breather right along with us.

No actually I was very nice to him. I even told him I was frustrated at the situation and NOT at him and I felt bad for him too. I think it is a shame HTC has hung these poor people out to dry with no real answers for anyone. I really would hate to have his job right now.
Well that's good! Although when I worked in a call center, if the person I was taking to sounded like a cute girl, it made my job so much better

I don't believe that they will open the bootloader
.
It's been now almost two months since the first Sensation hit the market on 19th May. We all want to believe the unconfirmed rumours (on FB, Twitter, but non on any official HTC site or document) that they will open the Bootloader, first for new handsets and then to us who have already got the unit.
The fact that there are some S-OFF unit circling around just shows that they know how to do it, but are not willing to roll it over to us.
I have lost all faith in HTC in this matter and now rely on those wonderful and talented developers to crack it.
.
Hi Chaps,
I've been having an issue with the signal on my phone, am now on my 4th Sensation..
I was on the phone to a really helpful chap at HTC and we were discussing exchanging my vodafone branded handset for an unbranded one (was never going to happen) but then I asked about rooting and unlocking the bootloader.
He went and had a chat with a colleague and came back and said that when the bootloader is unlocked, I will be able to flash the non branded firmware.
Rooting will void warranty, but flashing another firmware will be fine.
He confirmed this with another colleague, but as far as I can see, we will DEFINITELY get unlocked bootloader.
He didn't know when, but he didn't feel it would be too long to wait now!
Sorry for the off topic - though it is related...
I received a call from HTC from leaving a negative review from a survey they sent to me regarding an email I received from customer support. Basically said the same thing about the bootloader but did know about the temporary root for the Sensation. I guess that they are watching the dev. forum.

Of course they know what to do. They knew since day one. It's their device and their bootloader. IMO the problem are the carriers. HTC knows that people are unhappy with the locked bootloader policy and that they have to give their customers what they want or else there will be consequences. But on the other hand they have to keep the carriers happy. I believe they will leak the way and let the devs do the rest
Same here! I have faith that they will figure it out. )
No not off topic really. I was just really shocked when I got the call from HTC. I really did not expect to hear from them. Like I said I felt bad for the guy, but I feel that they should at least give us a yes or no. For that I have lost alot of faith in the company.

Really ? There's doubt in your mind that they don't know "HOW" to do it ? Ever occur to you that THEY are the ones that wrote the software for the bootloader and have every line of code for it available ? LOL
It was never a question of IF they know how to do it, it's a question of WHEN they'll decide to release the unlocked bootloader. It's politics, not technical know-how. Rest assured, they have plenty of that. LOL

What's the holdup and what can we do about it?
It's been pointed out that as the owners of this device it's up to us to enforce the GPL.
Does anyone know how to go about applying pressure to HTC?
Anyone a member of EFF.org? I'm getting sick of feeling like HTC's bastard child.
Yeah, WTH.
I feel there's gotta be a reason. They can't just be ignoring us out of laziness... can they? I think I read somewhere that they could take up to 180 days, which seems ridiculous. It's only been 70 or something like that. In Canada anyway... it was released on 4/20.
I guess would could bombard them with phone calls and emails, but I'm sure that won't make much difference.

Surely AT&T has something to do with it, and if that's the case, a letter from xda isn't likely to move them.
Also, they aren't yet in breach, yet, right? The phone hasn't been out two months.

their typical canned response is they release within 60-90 days of device release. We're over 60 and approaching 90 for the Rogers phone
Considering AT&T had HTC lock down the bootloader, I'm sure they have also asked them to hold out on releasing source for as long as they possibly can. That is the only explanation I can think of.

that doesn't matter. AT&T is not in control of enforcement of GPL. They don't own the code in question. AT&t isn't the culprit here I'm sure of it.

Well, we're all just speculating here. I'm just saying... AT&T is the only carrier to have them lock the BL ... and they've got the weight to lean on HTC to hold the source as long as possible.
Samsung has leverage HTC does not, as the Galaxy line is in enough demand that they don't need to give in to these kinds of requests.
Okay. I was going to open a new thread about this. But this is easier. Plus no new crazy thread. Subjects would be the same.
I do have a lawyer already on this. You can pm me for stuff if you want it I don't want to get his offices flooded. He wrote a lot of the commerce laws and sales laws the state of California follows today. He's also on the commerce board here in California.
The reason why my lawyer is on this is because of AT&T and their crap between a supervisor/manager and I.
Through a discovery phase;
HTC and AT&T know and are working on the SIM card issue. Yellow screen LCD display (sharps fault). The phone is Gorilla Glass. Not gorilla glass 2. And source will be released 4th of July weekend.
There's little bits of info I know that's proprietary which I can't publically post but is nice to know. Such as a device refresh time with AT&T on the one X**.

Anyway, here is the "comment"
I'm sick of HTC trying to dance around this issue. Tell me why this site was created. It certainly is not to give developers and the modding community what they want. If you did that, there would be kernel source code for devices such as the HTC One XL. I am a kernel developer and I own the HTC One XL. I bought this device, thinking that I could create custom kernels for it, and I would learn more about it. I bought this device, knowing that HTC would post the source code, unlike some of your competitors. So far that has not happened. It has been almost two months since the HTC One XL was released.
What am I looking for, you ask? I am looking for HTC to uphold its promise that they would aid the modding community in whatever way possible. I have time and time again seen the response 90-120 days, but I know that it isn't true. There is nothing stopping you from releasing the source now. Give me a definite answer. When will it be released? All the community wants is a definite answer.

Three cheers for Samsung doing the right thing, about a month late.
A better choice would of been, a developer portal website, where we send you our IMEI, you mark our warranty as invalid should we brick our phone, and then give us a file to unlock our bootloader. I'd even pay a reasonable, less than $50 processing fee, for your effort.
Earlier on a conference call with Verizon and Samsung, the following happened.... ( For the Verizon and Samsung suits, the below is satire, if I got it right, it's a coincidence...)
Samsung: Verizon, we told you that you were going to piss off the tech influncers, they're going to badmouth the S3 on your network and people will consider other carriers. Your dumb ass move of locking the bootloader is now costing us support calls, as we try to explain your poor decision. The right thing to do, as we told you earlier was not to lock it.
Verizon: Heck no, we're not doing it. We don't want the warranty and support headaches, besides they're all just a bunch of hacker thieves who will destroy our network, break their phones and cry to us when they brick.
Samsung: Your dumb move is hurting our brand and your brand too. (Thinking: But you're too stupid to see it.) What if we made you a limited quantity of S3's of of the S3's on your network without locking the bootloader.did a developer phone. You could sell it to a limited customer base for a small up-charge and make everyone happy. This way you could limit the amount of so called "hacker thieves" while keeping the influncers happy and give us a consistent message where we don't have to lie.
Verizon: We're not selling it.
Samsung: You'd be able to make peace with the influencers, you know that group that is all excited about our products, and convinces their friends to get it on your network. They'd love you for it.
Verizon: We're too big to have a different process for the phone same phone. We'd have mass confusion everywhere, support, service, retail and we'd loose money on it.
Samsung: You need to do something about this. It's only going to get nastier as you deliver more phones. All the other carriers didn't lock, and you simply look stupid for doing it. Your confusing message sounds like paranoia mixed with PR lies. Nobody is believing you, and you make us look bad.
Verizon: We're big enough. We don't care. Let them whine, they'll quiet down in a while.
Samsung: We'll if you're not going to do anything at least let us do something. Let us build a model with an IMEI which you'll allow on your network, which doesn't have a locked bootloader. We'll sell it, support it, and handle warranty. We'll call it a developer phone.
Verizon: Grumble Grumble.... Fine. This issue is over and the last we'll talk about it. Goodbye. Click. Those Samsung guys need to grow a pair. <Laughter>
Samsung: What a bunch of morons in suits.
Well this is good for those who want to install roms and what not. It sucks for those who are trying to get the Sgs3 as an upgrade on Verizon.
this is awesome thanks! I woulda never though samsung would do this.
They also do not say if you are paying $599 to get the 16gb version or 32gb.
so its essentially the sprint version except it works on Verizon.

haha that would be hilarious and so awesome at the same time if the whole unlocked bootloader stock image could just be flashed in odin to bypass everything else. I was sayin the devs in charge of the $3k in donations to the bounty for unlocked bootloader should just offer that money to somebody at Verizon...like somebody should email one of the execs, not CEO, but a little lower, execs are ALWAYS lookin to make some extra bucks. Or at Samsung, I'm sure there's some software that can unlock that they possess. I came from the OG and have only this for like 4 days, and I'm extremely missing the freedom I had. It's like moving to North Korea or Cuba, naw more like North Korea
^^you had me laughing at that!
....North Korea!

We can use it to point out to the fcc that vzw's excuse for locking the bootloader on a block c device is bull crap.
They really are trying to tax us now. This prooves they only care about money, not improoving their products..

The Evita has been available for nearly 3 months now. Is AT&T going to allow sanctioned bootloader unlocking? Was there any indication that after a period of time, the phone would be unlock able via HTC Dev? I'm considering selling my One X and never buying an At&T subsidized phone again, You are trying to come across as development friendly, but alas your flagship device sold in the United States is not unlock able.
Please advise without a canned response about carrier restrictions. I know all about that answer, I'd like a straight yes or no on this question please.
Lets see what I get in response
knowing the good folks at HTC you'll get the carrier crap...
heres to hoping tho
here's an idea, which is always fun. play the carrier against the manufacturer.
when they say its the carrier, go to the carrier and ask them, when each other blames it on each other, show them that's what going on. they hate.
Back when the phone launched I,along with a few other people filed complaints against AT&T with the BBB they went nowhere.

HTC is committed to listening to users and delivering customer satisfaction. Since announcing our commitment to unlockable bootloaders, HTC has worked to enable our customers to unlock the bootloader on more than 45 devices over the past six months. In some cases, however, restrictions prevent certain devices from participating in our bootloader unlocking program. Rest assured, HTC is committed to assisting developers in unlocking bootloaders for HTC devices and we'll continue to unlock additional devices in the future. I do apologize that I do not have any further information at this time. I hope you enjoy your weekend,Gunnyman

That is the truth. It's AT&T's fault. Start emailing them.
When I first got my phone and they gave me the generic customer satisfaction text I left negative feedback. If you leave below a certain score they will ask you why you wouldn't recommend the phone. I mentioned the bootloader and bloatware, as well as lack of Wallet support.
Don't bother contacting AT&T. If it truly is AT&T forcing HTC to keep the bootloader locked then the sad reality is those of us that like to tinker are an extremely small minority in their portfolio. AT&T couldn't care less about appeasing us and, from a business standpoint, I don't blame them. Us tinkerers are the ones that install the Asian ROM and create a portable hotspot for an 8 hour drive down the state so their kids can stream Netflix on the iPad in the backseat, soaking up precious bandwidth that AT&T would like to charge me a boatload for. Totally random example, wasn't me last week.

There may be more of us than you think. AT&T is about to give up on the added tethering plans for certain users. The new shared data family plans include tethering. You just pick your data cap and go.
Even though I've got grandfathered unlimited data, I may go for this when it's available. Adding up data totals for the three smartphones I'm paying for, we'll still save some money and get "free" tethering.
I feel the exact same way Gunny. My Nexus One was my first smart phone, and obviously, my first HTC. I had such a good experience, I went straight back to HTC for my next phone (this one) but it's clear now that the Nexus One was an anomaly in HTC's history. I'm thinking its going to be Nexus or Samsung devices only for me from now on. Not sure how much longer I can hold out with this device. If the damn camera wasn't so awesome I would have sold it months ago. =(
Billy
HTC can't do anything, it's not their fault. You should be contacting AT&T, not HTC.
im new to this phone so sorry if this is a noob question, but i rooted my phone and im assuming i unlocked the bootloader as im running cleanrom, to me the process was fairly easy to do, so whats the reason behind needing HTC to officially support unlocked bootloaders? will it give us the ability to do something more or make it easier to unlock?

I have no idea. Either way it does affect yor warranty, so I'm not sure why others dont use the CID mod to unlock.
We need a sanctioned method to unlock because the method we have now is not going to work on 2.2.0 and we should not have to scramble like iphone jailbreakers on supposedly open android whenever there's a software update

version S III running kit kat 4,4,2 yuck
I am no phone guru I am more like a phone retard. I did manage to put a different ROM on my wife's S III It was a Straight talk S III. That was very easy.I did not like the phone I had with ST so I bought a S III from a private dealer. it worked great with my contract with Version. I was lied to by the manager of my local version store and the next thing you know I am paying almost $300.00 a month. I gathered up there equipment went to there store and returned it to them. they kept the equipment and then had the nerve to still charge me $900.00 for it and more for the broken contract. I am taking them to court. I will not pay for what they have.
Sorry about the tangent. I have a S III running kitcat 4.4.2. I have spent a month pouring over web page after webpage. trying every piece of software that any body told me to try either thru Odin or Sim card. nothing works the thing is still locked up tighter then a drum. When I use Odin or the simcard way It always ends in red letters saying failed in odin or if its on the sim card small red letts that say some thing to the effect of invalid signature. at first I thought it was me, then I thought no I am following the directions to the letter. then I thought corrupt software. but that doesn't work either. not every single one can be bag. so all that leaves is Kitcat has my phone locked up tighter then a drum. So what is the fool proof way to be able to put a new rom on this. and please use little word I am phone inapt.
I hope some one can help with easy to understand using small words how to do what I want to do. and if some one knows of a decent rom that looks like swamp things it lives in the swamp, That,s the look I am going for. I am heading out in a few months or a year longest, to Louisianan to gator hunting and maybe some bore hunting
Sincerely

Its pretty simple and Basic. its my phone I own it the os is open source in other words free, They cant lock us out of it. I can see in the very near future a law suit. and I do know there is more then one way the jerk that lived here with me before he stole guns and a car and went to jail we got our phones at the same time from the same guy. this guy who lived with me had his phone unlocked completely and a new root installed in a matter of 2 days, so I know it can be don for a whole heck of a lot less then $50.00 he paid nothing and got all the software from the site. He was going to do mine to but he got busted first. The guy I bought the phone from can do it but he is way out west fishing.

You're also right, you do own the phone, but nothing in the gpl that Verizon has agreed to involves unlocking your bootloader. Verizon locking their bootloader doesn't violate any law or regulation, and a lawsuit wouldn't even materialize. A lawsuit won't happen.
Again, look this stuff up before spewing things out you know nothing about. People here have tried to help you, and I'm sorry if one person made you angry. It doesn't mean everyone here is unhelpful and doesn't know anything.

or root access, but now im just splitting hairs
i stumbled upon this little gem in my search for SIM unlocking my S3. Ive put an AT&T SIM in it and it works, but I just want it to be fully SIM unlocked. I know its kinda a moot point as it works with GSM sims in it, but the "unknown carrier" message on the screen is annoying. I cant seem to find a thread that has directions for SIM unlocking for ROMS after 4.3, more specifically 4.4.2 with the locked bootloader. I saw that yesterday they law to allow SIM unlocking for phones outside of contractual obligation was passed, so I imagine that any "black ops" methods of this that were previously not being discussed on this site are now back on the table. This S3 is not under contract, so can anyone help a brotha out??

Darn... I got it from a friend who upgraded to the S5. He saw my S5 and got a severe case of phone envy lol so the S3 (yep, the sch-i535) is just a toy, but I like my toys to be completely a fully modded. Its a shame that he did the 4.3 update when it came out locking the bootloader im still pretty surprised that there isnt a crack for that yet :/ oh, and will vzw give me any grief about the sim unlock since that law passed yesterday? Tough to answer that last bit, I know

He kept repeating the phrase "4g devices do not require sim codes" and I kept rephrasing the question and getting the same response. I even went as far as to tell the guy about the *#197328640# diag menu access process and that I had seen it on other galaxy devices but in order to access it, the baseband must be pre 4.3 before the bootloader locked. He just kept restating his stance on it being a global phone. Im not sure if he was just being a richardhead or what, but I guess ill just try a different rep another time... sigh...
