Marshmallow or Nougut ?? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

Hi guys:
Just remind,
why we should update to nougut ????
I mean beside the new UI there are no sig. Changes .
Also, doesnt worth losing the root mods and all cool features of our stable marshmallow rom .

The new gui is no improvement but it DOES have some nice new features like downscaling your resolution to save battery and the screen filter.

i do like the new gui.
third party Always on display with double tap
new way of showing notifications in nougat
for me its a big improvement over marshmallow
I'm using NOva launcher so no idea if the launcher itself has changed

I don't mean to hijack the thread as such, I just don't want to start another thread for a similar question!
Is Nougut beta stable for you guys who have it installed? Very tempted to install it along with a pixel launcher apk
It's been a good 3 years since I last messed with my phone in this way. I miss it!

Stable to a point, it's usable daily, but far from Marshmallow in terms of stability and polish
Things like WhatsApp voice messages have problems with low microphone volume, Camera quality is worse particularly for RAW
Basically you can definitely tell it's unfinished and unoptimised

So I basically use my phone for gaming, phone, text, alarm and social media, occasionally the odd picture.
From what you say, I wouldn't notice anything that's too unstable. Is that correct?
I'm sorry for coming across like a complete noob, because I pretty much am. It's been 3 years (and 3 XDA accounts later!) since I last messed with phones in this way.

Does Always On Display supports third party apps notification in Nougat?

Seemed stable enough to do all that for a couple of days for me, although I didn't test the alarm, might want a backup alarm just in case if it's for work

I've used Google pixel edition2.x on my s7 flat almost a week now and im really loving it. Only problem i have is that i lost snapchat in the change, because of security in snapchat app i cant get around to login. For me it doesnt matter but for others it might.

Did any of y'all get sm-g930v update? If so can one of y'all follow the instructions in this thread to revert back to marshmallow with smart switch, and follow these instructions so all of Verizon s7 users can get an update.zip and get in on the nougat action?
First do this: I think if you took the beta update then go back to MM using smart switch you can install the galaxy beta program app and download the beta update again. Can someone that got accepted into the beta program on verizon try please?
Then follow these instructions to capture the ota update.zip

[Q] Cognition vs. CM6

I've been using Cognition 2.1 and SRE since I got my Captivate. I have to say that I am very pleased with designgears stock rebuilds and they definitely made the user experience of the phone much better.
However, having come from a SE x10a, I never really had the opportunity to run any Cyanogen roms, much less CM6, on a phone meant specifically for Android (I did get it running on my HTC Touch Pro and HD2).
Does anyone have any first hand experience with running CM6 on a "real" Android phone and how does it compare to the current Cognition 2.1.5? Should I be holding my breath for CM6 or are the differences minimal (minus Froyo of course)?
Well, considering Cognition is just sourced together improvements in an all in one package, and Cyanogen mod is re-worked code they aren't even in the same ballpark. If and when CM drops it will be very different from Cognition.
Yeah I've had experience with Cyanogen on a Nexus one, and the speed improvements and big updates that add a lot of features, i used Cognition, and i have a couple gripes. first DG updates too frequently, i hate having to keeping using titanium backup, it literally takes an hour to get all my stuff back the way i want, he updates like everyday i swear. Secondly the updates are really buggy still, i had issues on my phone getting really random errors. Cyan has a ton of developers behind it, it really makes the phone, can't wait for it to be on Captivate.

you do realize that he releases UPDATES that dont require you to back up and restore every time?
I'm not sure if I would be willing to give up touch wiz for CM. I really think touch wiz with launcher pro is the way to go. Stock android despite what some really loud people think, is not am improvement over sense and touch wiz. At least not for me.

I especially appreciate the wifi, bluetooth, silent and vibrate controls. And I use the lock screen music controls all the time. I don't know how people get along without them.

Hmm well i didn't know for sure, he updates too much, i just stopped after 2.1.1, i hate updating, and flashing, and troubleshooting if something goes wrong haha, i mean Cog is something needed to push development on the Captivate. I mean IMO I'm not a big fan of COG, but its good to know people are working hard on our phone despite all the attention on the Vibrant.

I think it was after 2.1.1 when he started releasing update versions that don't touch /data so leave your apps & settings alone. I do agree though that the releases are too frequent, I'd expect such frequent releases when during the 0.X stage not 2.X.
I'm currently on 2.1.4 and am waiting for 2.1.6 to be released & for other guinea pigs to test it before I upgrade as even just disabling the voodoo lagfix, updating and re-enabling the lag fix is a pain.

Agreed, at least for touchwiz. Not sure about Sense.
Having said that, I understand CM makes changes to stock, so it sounds like it's basically a light skin as well. So not sure if those features are worth it. I love the TW brightness change on notification bar swype. If I knew how to submit ideas to CM, I would submit that. Swiping contacts is very nice too. And of course the notification bar toggles are great.
Launcher pro fixes the rest.
seriously, QQ moar, you're honestly complaining about having too many updates and too much support from the dev community? Look at the other galaxy S forums, they dont even have anything as cool as that, I mean Cognition is just 20 steps rolled into one ROM of what you'll do anyway, stripping many annoying things of the rom out and adding a few patches here and there.. its NOT a vanilla rom, its not anything thats not heavily based on what samsung/ATT put out there.
Its a dude constantly trying to make your phone better, thats hardly a bad thing. You can stick to Cognition 2.1 as i'm doing if you want and just wait for whatever else comes out based on a new samsung/ATT firmware. No one is forcing you to update, read the changelog and if nothing affects you leave your phone as it is.

Yea, I dont mind touchwiz so much. But the one thing I HATE about it is the fact that Samsung did away with the stock Android bluetooth stack and replaced it with one of their own, now we cant use bluetooth game controllers with it.
But other than that, TW with LauncherPro on top of it is pretty good.

I just leave my brightness set to auto. I tried the swiping to change brightness, but didnt like it. One swipe to the left made it go lowest brightness and one swipe to the right made maximum brightness, nothing in between. Thats why I use Auto. But I do love the notification area toggles for Wifi, bluetooth, etc. Just wish they had GPS in there as well like the other phones do.

My MSI Bluetooth GamePad works great. It's the Wii controller that doesn't play well.
I love the development on the Captivate i just don't particularly like all the enhancements that DG has added on the COG ROM. Battery drained like crazy with it. but anyways. yeah TW does have something special about it. some really neat enhancements over that stock experience, i haven't had any experience with Sense but hopefully a ROM will come out soon.
If and when cyan is released for this phone I will swap in a heart beat.
You get a customized light install with all of your favorite mods already installed already. Plus you get updated pushed directly to your phone.
Plus all the stuff that TW has you won't miss.

There is a trick to the brightness slider. In order to keep you from changing brightness accidentally, they made the initial spot you touch a dead zone. What you have to do is if you want the screen to be set somewhere on the lower end of the brightness scale, start swiping on the right side and work your way down. If you want to be on the brighter end of the scale, start all the way to the left and work your way up. If you want to be in the middle, just start at either extreme. It seems complicated at first, but it gets to be second nature really fast.

I'll miss plenty. Also, since samsung doesn't release driver source code, CM to leave the galaxyies behind when 3.0 comes out until (and if) samsung releases or leaks some 3.0 roms.
If I update to Cyanogen (when it comes out) or Cognition will I lose Swype?

Not as expected

I got my Mi4C four days ago.
I already flashed TWRP and installed latest stable ROM from xiaomi.eu.
But even if the display quality is great, the speaker is awesome and the MIUI itself is still amazing.. the device isn't as fast as i was expecting.
The most tedious moment is when i'm writing a message (either sms, whatsapp or telegram). It's like the vibration is delayed and sometimes typed letters appears all together after 1 or 2 seconds instead of appearing one by one as i write them. I was expecting more from a hexacore snapdragon bloody super powerful processor... I mean, my old Nexus 4 with Minimal OS (Android 6.0) was incredibly faster while typing.
Ok, the Nexus 4 also took incredibly ugly photos and opening an app required more time than on Mi4C but the overall experience was more fluid.
Do you have the same feeling? or it just meets your needs?

To be honest, i have never experienced any delays while typing. On mine everything is buttery smooth (and i write a lot)
I think its the bloatware or the keyboard that comes with the China stable Rom. I would suggest to install Xiaomi.eu Rom or sMIUI. You will see how fast it is without all those China Apps

Uhm ok thanks man. It could be just me I'm using Google Keyboard (up-to-date) and when i type a letter I see the popup appearing just a bit later...
I'll wait for the next update on xiaomi.eu. Maybe it will be a little faster (it's nothing terrible but when i'm writing a long message its kinda annoying)
In the meantime, if anyone know how to check the authenticity of the device, please tell me.
I also noticed the keyboard lag on miui eu ROMs. I guess it'll get ironed out eventually.

Hopefully it will get better soon.
Today i noticed that i'm not able to send vocal messages on whatsapp. Any other user is experiencing the same issue? the timer starts but when i release to send it just doesn't send.
My old phone was a Nexus 4. Mi4c feels better by far in system response in my opinion. I´m using stable rom from xiaomi.eu

Solved! (enabling "record audio" in permissions settings) Thank you.
First time using MIUI daily eheh..
Well.. that's weird. I let one of my friends try typing with my device and he confirmed that it feel like "delayed".
You barely notice it when you type one or two letters but with long words or even long messages it becomes a thing.
As i wrote i used Minimal OS (Android 6.0) on the Nexus4 and it was incredibly faster when using the google keyboard.
Is there anything i can check to understand if there is some performance issue?
how much should the Antutu score be? or how do i check if the device is original? (it actually looks like a legit Mi4C since everything appears as it should be..)

First i would try 1 or 2 other Keyboards, if there is no such issue, you could look in settings, language and input, spell checker, click on the little world icon and disable " look for contact names". And you can open the Google keyboard settings, advanced, key popup dismiss delay and set it to "no delay".

Good to hear that now you can look what was the cause when you re-enable the things you have disabled, but just one after another. I think its the contact names thing, or Google suggestions.

It looks like the major delay is caused by the "spell checker" in "language and input" settings.
Some minor delays also come with "Suggest contact names" and "Next-word suggestions" in the Google Keyboard Settings.
Didn't understand if "Show correction suggestions" and "Auto-correction" have a part on this trouble yet.

I tried the original stable ROM from en.miui and I had problems with PlayStore. I did install it successfully using the GoogleInstaller apk but every app showed the msg "Your device is not compatible".
I think i'm gonna try the last weekly build from xiaomi.eu. (Do you think i can dirty-flash it? i'm running the last stable rom from xiaomi.eu)
Would like to wait for a stable CM13 before switching to CM (just to enjoy MIUI a bit more )

Mi 4C is it worth it?

Hello all,
I hope your devices are treating you well.
I currently have a Nexus 4, which the support for is slowly dying. Therefore, I need to buy a new well supported phone.
First off, I really like the Mi 4C. However, I fear that it will become obsolete and follow the N4's fate really soon. Is that true?
Second, when I got the N4, I realized that there were some issues that people didn't speak much about such as noise while in phonecalls because of the proximity sensor and some headset buttons not working. Are there any similar - or untold - problems like that?
Finally, some rumors are popping out about the Mi5, do you think its worth the wait?
Any and all answers are appreciated. Thank you.
IMO if you really like vanilla android, fast updates and vast amount of custom ROMs, you will probably gonna miss that on Xiaomi's phone
My last phone was Moto G first gen and my first impression after moving to Xiaomi (MIUI) is that some features from vanilla android are missing on MIUI. I really missed that on the first couple of weeks but I learn to live without that for a few more weeks, had enough and switched to CM12 ROMs
Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with the hardware. It's just I didn't really like MIUI
I think you should try MIUI first to see if you like it or not and you can always use custom ROMs if you want.

Little things like expanding notifications on the lock screen without pulling notification drawer, task switcher design, inconsistent notification color and overall UI experience is less polished than vanilla android.
It looks like a minor thing but once it's gone I really missed that.
Well MIUI isn't so bad, just a bit different and needs time to get used to. The device seems the best 5' vfm right now. Upon release of kernel sources I'm sure it will get proper dev support too.
Thanks for all your answers.
The way I understand it now is that the device doesn't have proper dev support due to the lack of an open source kernel. Was the release of this kernel a rumor or was it confirmed?
Also, can you guys please answer me about the wait for Mi 5 and the device's hardware issues?
Thanks again

4c is probably the best bang for buck phone you can get now, great specs incl ir blaster, great camera, loud speaker although mono. Only thing keeping it back is kernel sources but that hasn't stopped 2 different cm roms coming on it.
I also came from a Nexus 4 and this is a great upgrade and I expect it have support for 3 years at least.
Mi5 will be great phone with flagship specs so at least wait for the official reveal and prices. If I were in your position I'd probably lean towards the mi5
I just got this Mi-4c a few days ago from a friend. Honestly, I love MIUI. I used to have a ROM with it on my old Motorola Triumph from Virgin Mobile. I think it's amazing with the themes. Pair in different fonts and live wallpapers and I'm in love.
I currently use an iPhone 6s as my primary, have a Note 3 for media, a BlackBerry Z10 just because and a Lumia 640 for the same reason.
I can't wait until my official smart wallet case from Xiaomi comes! I love technology... ^.^

I'm using stock MIUI 7. Luckily I'm pretty familiar with the layout, so I can navigate easily even though everything is in Chinese. I figure if I want to modify, I can always do it. For now though, I'm enjoying it the way it came.
Only thing I've done is get the Playstore and the Google installer. Besides that, I liked the phone as it came.

Yes, it is a pretty neat phone. I actually like MIUI, more than I thought. But it bugs me, that I can't set the DPI. That's actually the only thin preventing me from using MIUI. Also, I can't seem to be able to download Theme or anything from the MI Store.
Did you check if you had any malware installed when you got it? Mine was infected when I got it. I just bought one for my significant other, got it today, and found out that it too was infected, had TWRP installed and Xiaomi.eu as ROM. :silly:

Yes, it is a pretty neat phone. I actually like MIUI, more than I thought. But it bugs me, that I can't set the DPI. That's actually the only thin preventing me from using MIUI. Also, I can't seem to be able to download Theme or anything from the MI Store.

Why can't you download themes? I use a third party to buy the Mi credits.
I don't see any malware. I could be wrong though, anything I should be looking for?
Thanks!

You can manually chnange the DPI:
1) Install a terminal emulator
2) Type in "su" and grant Superuser rights
3) Type in "wm density YOURDPI"
4) Reboot.
Just replace YOURDPI with the dpi you want, for example 380.
Horizontal multi-multitasking they way they do it sux. Just give me lollipop carousel and MIUI is everything iOS should be but never will be.

Just gor my honor 8 phone today, great hardware but the GUI is ....

Any tip for a more clean userinterface and better costumization options.... i dont wan't animations, flashing, sounds, blinks and all bells and wissels everywhere and no whay to get rid of it.. i want a nice clean android the don't use 80% of battery and perfomance on useless ****.
I loved cyanogen mod on my samsund devices but i there is no final relese for the hh8 from what i have found.

@parra
You should've bought another device.
There are sounds and animations by default in cyanogenmod too, as on any other smartphone.
Latest cyanogenmod 14.1 (lineageos) doesn't even have support for theming yet.
That's everyone's issue with emui. Use these theme in this thread. Download and change .Zip to .Get then put them in local > theme
Open themes app and apply
Has no effect on location of buttons and layout
The sounds and animations are possible to be disable in every ROM! And they come active by default in every ROM!
So that's a "no-question"
The performance of the device, by default, is very good and you shouldn't have complains on that, specially if you come from an older device.
The battery is also pretty good, normally it lasts me a full day with some heavy use (not a lot of gaming, but there is no phone in the market that lasts long playing games!)
Besides the nice battery, the fast charge is great and very usefull!
But indeed, if you like to try and change ROM's, you bought the wrong device!
wait for emui5, you will love it..

I really think you should've researched your purchase before buying this phone; it sounds like something like the One Plus 3/3T or a Nexus would've suited your tastes more. Or just any device with a really healthy developer community.

Here is what I have to like about EMUI. While it is customized over stock android, it is also optimized very nicely to work with the Kirin processors and not to mention the dual-lens camera. From my experience, it is better than TouchWiz as TouchWiz gets slow as usage increases while EMUI is fantastic so far for me.
The sounds and personalization is in every stock ROM. If you wanted clean android, then you may have to pick Pixel but then again, Google themselves have said they are using a customized version of android in Pixel unlike Nexus. Again, that is a good thing as that helps OEMs (even Google) to optimize for the device.

I know but it will give you a more stock android like experience for now. Until Nougat is released for the Honor 8.

Check this thread
Three thing I don't like about EMUI 4 is the notification shade, non sensical setting menu and no app drawer.
Luckyly I just got EMUI 5. It has nougat style notification, app drawer option and better setting menu. Last one still bugs me a little as a few setting still hidden under pile of menu.

EMUI 5, saved the day, it a realy nice android phone without the need for unlocking and rooting just to be able to use it. ill stick with the EMUI5 for now and use a samsung s5 and virtual machines in vs to run code. nice to have a phone thats actually a phone for a time and not a android andset thar sometimes can be used for voicecalls like it usualy endsup when tje modding goes overboard.

Android Q preview for Pixel?

I hope you'll have read this tweet
https://twitter.com/MishaalRahman/status/1104977146081169409?s=19
Android Q is near, Do you guys think we Pixel users will be getting Android Q Preview?
Doesn't seem likely but never know, I hope so, but even if it doesn't happen officially I'm still pretty sure we'll see custom Q roms

Looks like the first beta is up! We are in!
Installed and running fine ... Pretty sweet we're in but with a 3 yo phone I just hope that it doesn't slow down too bad

Couldn't resist trying it out. So far running great. Too soon to make any real conclusions at this point though. If it isn't as good as pie at least we can always go back

Did you have to wipe user data after you enrolled for the preview?? Or is it just like an ota update leaving user data.

it just installed like an OTA, no wipe
is it a daily driver?
Guys do let us know if it is a daily driver or not. I really wanna try this out.
And list bugs you encounter here also please

It's like an Ota... But I wiped anyways and it states that if you opt out of the beta program you'll need to wipe to go back. If you stay in until the beta program ends though it'll just Ota you to the official without needing a wipe

Impressions so far:
- scrolling is noticably smoother, whether it's web pages or news content on the glauncher.
- battery seems to be better than Pie. The standby is definitely better, but I should note that I used a battery recalibration app right after updating (for the first time).
- the device seems to stay cooler under normal load. For whatever reason, it got hot doing some basic things in Pie and the battery life drained quickly.
- no bugs so far, all of my apps still work from what I can tell. Surprisingly stable for a first preview.

I agree, so far its working very well, no problems for me, I used OTA
Works fine, but when i tap on last button in settings "tips and support" app crashes. System-wide "dark" theme is not dark but pure black. Thi is annoying for my eyes, dark grey is much better for me.
Chase mobile app crashes after a couple min. Can anyone confirm the same?

Where is the system wide dark theme?

Where is the system wide dark theme?
Enable: adb shell settings put secure ui_night_mode 2
Disable: adb shell settings put secure ui_night_mode 1
For now toggle is missing
May be 3 for gray ?
Dark mode is not worth yet. Cant use Google photos. And maybe few other apps which are not discovered yet .
Try battery saver dark mode and check if you can live with google photos (side menu, etc)
If you can then go for it.
Otherwise not even a single crash yet on android Q beta q. Its a good experience so far.
Can be used as Daily driver.
New gestures are pretty laggy for me.

It's been quite buggy for me, there are times when I open some apps and the system freezes completely, but I've seen some users don't complain at all , is it my device model or something...?

No not your device..., It freezes sometimes like once in a day but see its just a beta 1 i tend to ignore that 1 time a day thing.
And if you think its too buggy then try a clean flash or formatting your device once. It helps.
