[Q] Cognition vs. CM6 - Captivate General

I've been using Cognition 2.1 and SRE since I got my Captivate. I have to say that I am very pleased with designgears stock rebuilds and they definitely made the user experience of the phone much better.
However, having come from a SE x10a, I never really had the opportunity to run any Cyanogen roms, much less CM6, on a phone meant specifically for Android (I did get it running on my HTC Touch Pro and HD2).
Does anyone have any first hand experience with running CM6 on a "real" Android phone and how does it compare to the current Cognition 2.1.5? Should I be holding my breath for CM6 or are the differences minimal (minus Froyo of course)?

Well, considering Cognition is just sourced together improvements in an all in one package, and Cyanogen mod is re-worked code they aren't even in the same ballpark. If and when CM drops it will be very different from Cognition.

Yeah I've had experience with Cyanogen on a Nexus one, and the speed improvements and big updates that add a lot of features, i used Cognition, and i have a couple gripes. first DG updates too frequently, i hate having to keeping using titanium backup, it literally takes an hour to get all my stuff back the way i want, he updates like everyday i swear. Secondly the updates are really buggy still, i had issues on my phone getting really random errors. Cyan has a ton of developers behind it, it really makes the phone, can't wait for it to be on Captivate.

you do realize that he releases UPDATES that dont require you to back up and restore every time?

I'm not sure if I would be willing to give up touch wiz for CM. I really think touch wiz with launcher pro is the way to go. Stock android despite what some really loud people think, is not am improvement over sense and touch wiz. At least not for me.

I agree. The TW calendar and contact list is pretty, and LP makes the rest pretty and functional. Good combination IMO

I especially appreciate the wifi, bluetooth, silent and vibrate controls. And I use the lock screen music controls all the time. I don't know how people get along without them.

Hmm well i didn't know for sure, he updates too much, i just stopped after 2.1.1, i hate updating, and flashing, and troubleshooting if something goes wrong haha, i mean Cog is something needed to push development on the Captivate. I mean IMO I'm not a big fan of COG, but its good to know people are working hard on our phone despite all the attention on the Vibrant.

I think it was after 2.1.1 when he started releasing update versions that don't touch /data so leave your apps & settings alone. I do agree though that the releases are too frequent, I'd expect such frequent releases when during the 0.X stage not 2.X.
I'm currently on 2.1.4 and am waiting for 2.1.6 to be released & for other guinea pigs to test it before I upgrade as even just disabling the voodoo lagfix, updating and re-enabling the lag fix is a pain.

Agreed, at least for touchwiz. Not sure about Sense.
Having said that, I understand CM makes changes to stock, so it sounds like it's basically a light skin as well. So not sure if those features are worth it. I love the TW brightness change on notification bar swype. If I knew how to submit ideas to CM, I would submit that. Swiping contacts is very nice too. And of course the notification bar toggles are great.
Launcher pro fixes the rest.

seriously, QQ moar, you're honestly complaining about having too many updates and too much support from the dev community? Look at the other galaxy S forums, they dont even have anything as cool as that, I mean Cognition is just 20 steps rolled into one ROM of what you'll do anyway, stripping many annoying things of the rom out and adding a few patches here and there.. its NOT a vanilla rom, its not anything thats not heavily based on what samsung/ATT put out there.
Its a dude constantly trying to make your phone better, thats hardly a bad thing. You can stick to Cognition 2.1 as i'm doing if you want and just wait for whatever else comes out based on a new samsung/ATT firmware. No one is forcing you to update, read the changelog and if nothing affects you leave your phone as it is.

Yea, I dont mind touchwiz so much. But the one thing I HATE about it is the fact that Samsung did away with the stock Android bluetooth stack and replaced it with one of their own, now we cant use bluetooth game controllers with it.
But other than that, TW with LauncherPro on top of it is pretty good.

I just leave my brightness set to auto. I tried the swiping to change brightness, but didnt like it. One swipe to the left made it go lowest brightness and one swipe to the right made maximum brightness, nothing in between. Thats why I use Auto. But I do love the notification area toggles for Wifi, bluetooth, etc. Just wish they had GPS in there as well like the other phones do.

My MSI Bluetooth GamePad works great. It's the Wii controller that doesn't play well.

I love the development on the Captivate i just don't particularly like all the enhancements that DG has added on the COG ROM. Battery drained like crazy with it. but anyways. yeah TW does have something special about it. some really neat enhancements over that stock experience, i haven't had any experience with Sense but hopefully a ROM will come out soon.

If and when cyan is released for this phone I will swap in a heart beat.
You get a customized light install with all of your favorite mods already installed already. Plus you get updated pushed directly to your phone.
Plus all the stuff that TW has you won't miss.

There is a trick to the brightness slider. In order to keep you from changing brightness accidentally, they made the initial spot you touch a dead zone. What you have to do is if you want the screen to be set somewhere on the lower end of the brightness scale, start swiping on the right side and work your way down. If you want to be on the brighter end of the scale, start all the way to the left and work your way up. If you want to be in the middle, just start at either extreme. It seems complicated at first, but it gets to be second nature really fast.

I'll miss plenty. Also, since samsung doesn't release driver source code, CM to leave the galaxyies behind when 3.0 comes out until (and if) samsung releases or leaks some 3.0 roms.

If I update to Cyanogen (when it comes out) or Cognition will I lose Swype?

I just want to be sure I am not missing anything - there are not any Epic roms out yet right? to put it a different way, every single epic owner on the planet is currently using the Sprint/Samsung factory version of Android 2.1, yes?

Taking serious suggestions on new ROM

Hello,
This is adamholden85. Most of you know me from Axura. I have formed my new team(first team actually) and I want to start hearing from the community what you guys want your next ROM to have/do. I am not looking for specific apps, that you can do yourself. I am looking for things such as functionality, looks, feel and so on. Please let me know so we can put this together and really put out something amazing for you.
i know you have played with the Armani rom, as have I. give it a shot, it appears to be fully working out of the box with no funky kernels or modems (only thing i had to do was enable 850mhz)

In regards to look, I prefer the current look of 2.5 so I would like to see something along those likes as the base. Other themes can modify visually from there.
Otherwise, Im up for about anything I am just totally sold on that look.
Awesome, this sounds like great news. I was really disappointed to see that you got pushed out of AXURA by a couple of bad apples being louder than those of us who truly appreciate the work you do. I started flashing back on my HTC Fuze with Winmo and your and Hans thread with AXURA was the most user friendly and helpful thread I have ever found on all of XDA. I'm definitely looking forward to this. Anyway, just wanted to let you know there are lots of us out here who are truly grateful, keep up the great work!
Anyway, to stop the love fest and maybe contribute a bit to this my personal preference is to avoid the OC/UV kernels. They just seem to add possible instability and I don't think they add much real world benefit at all.
Also, just a feature that seems to have been lost in Froyo that I liked in 2.1 was the ability to change brightness by swiping across the notification bar. Not sure if that's possible, but I'm suprised that no one else seems to miss that function, haha.
Just my two cents. Can't wait to see what you have for us Adam!
I kind of liked the green icons you had in version 2.5.1 But never did have any luck installing it and getting it to work correctly. Maybe I should of done a clean wipe.
Either way v2.5 works great.
I think some of the red icons like I have seen would be nice, I do miss the 3G icon. Even if it actually is H ?

First, I think you should wait until we have a stable gingerbread ROM to base it on. Second, if I can help you with anything just ask.

Sense vs. AOSP

First off...I think I've come to the conclusion I'm a sense guy at heart.
I've used all the major sense ROMs for this bolt. BAMF, Virus (Airborne and Synergy), Chingy stuff, and DroidTh3ory's stuff. (I"m sure a few others I've forgotten).
I've also tried CM7 several times, OMFGB, and recently Th3ory's AOSP run.
I get smaller footprint, more customization, better battery life (I'm told, can't say I've left an AOSP on mine long enough to confirm/deny that personally).
I use my phone for 60% business/40% personal.
I know you can download an app or theme for just about everything...but at what point do you say enough is enough. I'm trying to make AOSP do what Sense already does?...most of the time for free.
Example... Sense 3.0 MMS...cleaner, nicer. Sense email client, way better than AOSP offering. I use Exchange for email. I know all about Touchdown, K9, moxier, Enhanced Email, etc. But on baked in AOSP email you can't even move an email to a sub folder??
The dialer is horrible, IMO. So I downloaded dialer one. I like sense's dialer, if you start typing a name or number, it starts pulling them up. Reminds me of how easy a blackberry is to use for dialing.
I like the people Widget, so I paid for launcher pro plus, their people widget as well as calendar/agenda widget is ok. It would be nice if the facebook pictures synced up properly with their people widget, but I've read this is a known AOSP issue. Again...buying/installing a 3rd party app for something that just works in Sense.
I'm not looking for a flame war. I know there's a HUGE majority of AOSP love out there...I get it. Just looking for opinions.... am I way off base here?
Now, AOSP is not all terrible. The ability to choose different launchers, change the number of home screens, how they rotate, different home dock icons, ability to change row/columns.... There are a lot of pluses for sure... so please don't think I'm kicking dirt on the AOSP guys. I appreciate good work from ALL the developers...it's a thankless and never ending job...
One of the main reasons I am sticking with Sense-based ROMs is the quick lookup feature.
I loved aosp on my Droid 1 and Droid x, when I got the t-bolt I had to deal with sense and now I can't go back to aosp.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
On the CM dialer, you can hit the search key and type someone's name.
I like AOSP cause thats what I learned on. Sense pisses me off more than it helps- too many things that just dont work right for me. For example (and this is small stuff, but stuff that just bugs me), click on the address bar on the browser. Start typing something to search....click enter, aww crap, it automatically put a www. in front of it...back up...delete the www. and try again. I can visit Sense once in a while, but always end up back at AOSP. I dont like re-learning, my original HTC Nexus with AOSP was still the best phone I ever had.
I love sense. I came from a Droid X and after i got my TB i realized that 80% of apps and widgets and stuff that i downloaded was to make it look and operate like sense. Like a world clock, a stop watch and good calender widget, the sense clock...the list goes on. Yes there are some things i miss from launchers i used but overall sense is good. Very functional and its got the eye candy.
I dont get why you u cant just turn sense off in settings like you could on my htc imagio. Made it much easier for people who prefer one or the other.
Sent from my TBolt using my f***king thumbs...
I think the true answer lies somewhere in between, the beauty of the Android OS is customization. Personally, I am using an AOSP dailer with my BAMF Sense ROM.
My girlfriend loves cm7. I can't stand it. I tend to think of AOSP as Android for people that don't care how it looks or works. Android really isn't that elegant all by itself. It's a pig in need of lip stick. I just refuse to pay for something Sense gives me for free is another reason. That HTC clock is coming close to being an icon of Android itself. I personally think its time Google considered making their industrial modern art masterpiece into something pleasing to the eye and brain. I might give AOSP another go at some point. I'm pretty sure I won't like it because I like how Sense ties things together and it Just works. For free.
I've tried going back to AOSP as I loved AOSP on my OG Droid. I am a Sense-aholic now and I cannot go back. Especially running Sense 3.0 on das BAMF 4.9.

+1, thats exactly how I was. I thought I was an ASOP only guy after my D1, but every time I try ASOP now I find myself missing some of the things that sense gives you.
Gingeritis 3D is the most stable GB Sense rom I have used yet, battery life is unexpectedly good.
I like the hardware that Motorola has been putting out with android, but Sense blows Blur out of the water...
I've tested a few moto phones...and that being said, I can TOTALLY see the huge love of AOSP for those folks. It's what they're used to and what they know.
But I've owned a sense phone...and use it daily now since release.
I too, can't see spending time and a little money to make it work or trying to make it work like Sense Candy....

I use Sense simply because I don't have time to experiment with all the other ROM options. But whenever I have started to try some other individual app options, I usually find something I like better. Sense weather animations are cool eye-candy, but there are much more functional weather apps when you need them--and you just don't need a weather app on all the time. The stock clock is ridiculously huge and some of the other optional Sense clocks are OK, but there are a million other clocks out there for free. Found a free calendar widget that is much more customizable and therefore nicer looking with my many backgrounds. Touchdown is better email app (but not cheap). One thing at a time, everything is getting replaced. Not sure what elements of Sense I'm still using!
Thanks, Robertus
I love asop. I love being able to use launcher pro and hide apps that i don't want to see. I love the speed. And every app works great on asop. I've tried to go back to sense but i only last a day at the most. I think the dailer on stock android is awesome.

I started off with Sense and tried the ASOP mods.
ASOP is very minimalistic. BUT Sense is TOO MUCH.
Google needs a good clock and a better calender and better icons. If they fix that, ill be solid with ASOP.
I like rooting so that I can get to enjoy both sense and aosp. Both have pluses and minuses. Can we agree to that?
End of story.

He was looking for opinions on Sense vs ASOP. He wants to know the pros and cons
I keep trying all the AOSP roms but keep going back to Das BAMF 1.8.6 because it's the most stable, has the least bugs, and the longest battery life. At least for me.
Its a personal preference, so there is no right or wrong answer. I definitely love AOSP. Just cleaner, every app works as intended, moddable.. most importantly (typically) ultra stable and fast.
I personally like the dialer, but usually people get hung up (no pun intended) on that. I love the fact that I can choose to dial, use favourites, have an easy to access call log, etc.. and if I can't manage to find someone in all that.. i can just hit the search key (you remember that little button on the bottom right side).
I do love some of the sense options but not enough to buy the farm. It would be nice to have a middle ground, but I guess i kind of do with AOSP and the mods.
I there any way to enable the quick lookup feature on AOSP? I mainly use quick lookup to easily translated web pages.

[Q] is there a rom that is like commrom for the fascinate?

Like many new charge users im coming from the fascinate. I ran the commrom and loved it. very clean, stable and had lots of goodies. So i was wondering if there was a rom or even better and all in one root/rom/kernal package that was a lot like commrom with most if not all the same goodies like acc battery, 5-6 lock screens just to name a few. also, does everybody elses screen take like 4 secs to turn back on. like after you move your headset away from your head? or is it a possible sensor issue or something? Thanks

Thanks

There isn't really anything like that yet with all the extra goodies and all that. Kejar (team gummy) are working on getting something like that (multiple lock screens, kernal, rom, root included) in their next release. No, I don't have a problem with the headset sensor.
The closest thing to what you are looking for would be Kejars Odin package. You can find that here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116086

thank you. Im still reading a lot of the threats and trying to get up to date on whats going on inthe charge forums. Time has just been very limited lately. I def looki forward to future updates then. Commrom was an excellent rom.
Actually, particularly if you use the Odin file, Gummy already has most of what the Fascinate's UKB has -- accurate battery, a toolbox, starts with the Gingerbread theme and has multiple other theme choices, kernel and recovery (and it's obviously rooted; every custom ROM is).
All it doesn't have yet are multiple lockscreens, but that's coming out in the next version (they've already released screenshots and they're even using some of the TSM lockscreens).
Someone, whose name is slipping my mind right now, is in the process of porting tsm parts to the charge. I think it will be included in gummycharged fe 2.0 but I cannot say for sure.

awesome, i cant wait. the tsm 4 mode programable lock screen and the half circle mute unmute and anwser lock screen were my fav so far.
Yeah it looks like tsm parts will definitely be onboard gc2.0 along with a new toolbox gui. Its shaping up to be a good rom gone great to tide us over until we have aosp.

Yeah mark me down as another waiting gummy 2.0. I am running humble right now but that is onlybeen because I got too lazy to change it. Well that and I keep thinking gb is around the corner... Yeah yeah wishful thinking

Two biggest things I feel like is the bluetooth and camera in call, neither of which really bother me, I just want the kernel source so I have something new to play with lol, although I doubt much has really changed.
it also changed the way the notifications works in the pull down.
when have a notification that can be expanded, it now has the easy AOSP style two finger pull pull down rather than what Samsung has going on now with the horrible pinch to zoom.

I'll just be happy when change those UGLY green and gray colors.. I mean we are in jellybean and they are using colors from gingerbread lol. It's sad because I honestly like the rest of the TW interface, samsung just seems to like dark, bland looking colors.

It really is too bad, with root, it takes me all of 3 mins. to fix the battery and toggles to the correct colors, I can't understand why Samsung couldn't either??

I know right? On my thunderbolt all I had to do was crack open an apk, switch the icons, bam done, and I made said icons with photoshop in no time. And if it was odexed, add maybe 5-10 depending on if everything works the first time lol
On a backend level, I really wish samsung would've cleaned up their kernel source some, there are warnings EV VER RE WHERE lol, the thunderbolt source wasn't near as bad. I'm not sure how the real kernel devs went about compiling theres, but I had to make a few changes to a few source files just to get it to compile. Thankfully there are people must smarter than me that had the same issues and found the simple fixes, all which would've taken weeks for me to trace.
I loved the green gray and blue colors from stock Touchwiz when I first got this phone but now I loathe them. As far as 4.1.2 goes, nothing too special it seems like, besides for maybe the bluetooth improvements.

the version of 4.1.2 I have also adds the Best Face feature to the camera (didn't see that listed in the updates specific to this phone, or I may be running some oddball version), either way it wasn't there in the stock 4.1.1 for me.
I do have an odd issue since going to 4.1.2, If I have my phone in my pocket and receive a phone call, I pull the phone out of my pocket accidentally touching the screen, I can not then slide to answer the phone call. I messed around and found a setting to answer calls by pressing home button, so I have got around it for now.
However I have played around more and discovered if at any point in time I keep a few fingers on the screen at once for a few seconds it seems to disable touch input all together and I have to lock the phone then unlock to get it back.... didn't seem to happen on 4.1.1 for me. Hasn;t caught me too many times but every once in a while it bugs the hell out of me.
Any chance the new update has the ability to change the APN or is it still locked down?
Thanks friends. I was going to flash the newest rpm and modem, do you guys see any improvements in signal strength?
