Samsung Messages-app from newer phone for sent time? - Galaxy S 4 Themes and Apps

Hey everybody,
The S4 is definitely getting old, but I am quite happy with it, and keep it running with a lot of tweaks and it totally fulfills my needs. So even if it would be nice to upgrade, I don't see why I should spend the money now (and not rather wait 1 more year).
What I dislike though is that you cannot see the sent-time of received messages. Since Lollipop the SMS-Sent-Time app from the PlayStore has become unrealiable. Google Messenger does show the sent time, but I don't like the interface. It wastes too much space in my opinion. I'd rather stick with the Samsung app. Unfortunately, this one doesn't show the sent time in message details.
So, I was wondering: do the newer version of Samsungs messages app show the sent time (if I have to select this option from a popup is fine for me)? If yes, would it be possible to just take the apk from a newer phone (like s5 or s6) and replace the one on mine? If that's possible as well, where would I get this apk?
Thanks a lot in advance

But is it worth it? Does it show the sent time on request, unlike the S4 stock messages app?

Noob question sorry, is nexus s plain android or is there bloatware installed?

About to buy one and I just wanna know

Pure vanilla Android.
There's a bunch of stuff preinstalled on it, but it's all Google stuff; I don't think there's any third-party apps.
It's not plain android, there's a bunch of Google bloatware.

I'm curious as to what you consider Google bloatware, because the Nexus S is about as plain as you can get. Most of the time bloatware is stuff added by OEMs, such as the preinstalled demo games on the MT4G. Mind elaborating?
I can't speak for JC, but in my mind, anything that comes preinstalled on a device which I neither want nor need is bloatware. This, of course, makes the entire concept subjective, but in general with things like Android, I think less is more, since you can download nearly all of these things from the Market anyway. The consumer-side justification of "bloatware" (revenue for the provider, of course, being the primary, producer-side justification) is to present the user with access to a service they might otherwise not know to look for. ("Oh, hey, my phone can play TV/can display YouTube/has internet radio/whatever!"). For most of us though, particularly anyone savvy enough to be on XDA in the first place, most of it ends up falling into one of three categories:
-Don't care about
-Use a different app for
-Would have downloaded if it wasn't included.
In any case, I've observed that what most people have the biggest issue with isn't that stuff may come preinstalled on their phone, it's that you can't get rid of it, and if you do, you may well open yourself to a world of trouble should you ever wish to install an OTA update.
I would consider it plain android, as the "bloatware" on it is really only google apps, which come with all android phones. It doesn't have bloatware from a third party though like some of the other android phones. Either way, bloatware can be removed off any rooted phone with titanium backup

Fair enough points.
Unfortunately, we still run into that last issue even on the Nexus S. Folks were unable to update via the stock 2.3.1 OTA if they had modified system files, such replacing the stock Mms.apk or Gmail.apk with the black/custom ones from the Themes & Apps section or deleting any of their relevant .odexs. Even placing the missing files back on the system partition didn't seem to work, at least for me. It was a very curious update.

Yeah, I soft-bricked my Vibrant trying to grab T-Mobile's OTA after I took it upon myself to delete all the extraneous crapware that came with it. They can be very touchy indeed. It's a steep learning curve for newbies. x_x

There is also that office app that is NOT a google product...so yea, there is a bit of bloat, but pretty much it is vanilla.

True, but it does still support up to 7.2Mbps down which you'll only get in a t-mobile 4g area.
I was just in Orlando and i was getting around 5-6Mbps on my N1 and in a Nexus S i was testing at best buy and it was pretty damn fast. puts my DSL connection at home to shame.

I don't think Google has an office app for Android. Every device has launched with some kind of partnered 3rd party, either ThinkFree, or Quickoffice. At least, I think those are the two they've used.
If they didn't, you wouldn't be able to read any kind of text document on your phone and that's just kind of a silly thing to not be able to do, imo.
EDIT: And on that note, Google should probably make a office app! lol
Who really cares whats installed or not, EVERYTHING can be uninstalled.
after using ThinkFREE for a while on the Galaxy S, i can say it's really good
way better than the Docs To Go and/or QuickOffice which i'm using on the XT720
but truth is... you don't need any of those with Google Office online, it's so much easier to keep things and work with documents using Google Office Online

Yes to all the above. The only thing I've noticed that's lost is the S Planner month view widget. The S Planner app still works, I just couldn't get the big month view widget on the screen with Nova. So I bought aCalendar instead, which has a month view widget...
PS: For instant note to work, you have to hold the pen button while you touch the screen twice. (In my case, touching the screen twice is set to bring up recent apps, touching it twice while holding the pen button brings up the note. I'm not sure if there's a setting I changed somewhere to do that...)

That's great news. I really like NOVA launcher and I am happy I'll be able to keep using it. Another question, are the 9 GB of available memory enough? I'm struggling with the question about whether or not I should purchase the 16 GB one or wait until the 32 GB becomes available in the US.

Unless I'm mistaken there hasn't been an announcement regarding a release date for a 32GB version in US, or even that it will be available.
Get the 16gb version, buy a 32gb sd card for <$30. I would assume that would be much cheaper than paying whatever the upgrade cost is to have that additional memory built in. Plus, you can start playing with it now.

I know you're talking about Nova, but I've been using Apex Launcher, and all these features work.
The only thing I've really noticed that only shows up in TouchWiz Home is the S Planner widget(s)... weird, cause the S Planner ones still work in alternate launchers. Other than that, everything else seems to be intact, but maybe I missed something.
What other apps/widgets/features are specific to this launcher?

I think that depends on how many apps you need installed and whether or not you plan on installing large games. I still have over 6 GB free but I'm not a gamer. My first Android device had 32 gb but I always had over 20 gb free, so I've only bought 16gb devices ever since. The only time I've ever had to delete an app to free up space was on my iPad. Maybe ios apps are bigger? You can't put apps on the sd card out of the box, and I'm not sure what you have to do to allow moving apps to the sd card, so maybe you want to look into that before you decide to spend extra for more space you might not need.

I'm impressed that you only used 3GB. I usually use more than this. I have 9GB used in my Nexus 7 and almost twice as much on my Droid Razr Maxx. I do believe I would not need to install so many 3rd party apps on the Note since it's already heavily customized. I might give it a try to see if I can survive with only 9 GB.

I have only heard of 32 GB in Europe or India. I had hopes of a 32 GB being released in the US because the Note 10 has a 32 GB version. I believe that no other Samsung device has more than 16 GB in the US.
I might give it a try now that it's available at Sam's Club.

If this works, the link should be to screen shots of all my apps on my Note 8. It is a short list, I had twice as many apps on my GNex until I cleaned it out recently, but this is pretty much all I need. I found that even my two year old single core tablet is still usable as long as I don't put a lot of apps on it. I also found on my GNex and Nexus 7 a horrible slow down when less than a specific amount of free space was available, so I now make sure I always have at least 2gb free.
Thanks for the sd card tips, I will check it out later.
Edit: deleted link. Picasa appears to link to Google plus now. I will post from another site tomorrow.

So is your guess that it could go either way with the Note 8 then? i.e., there could be a 32GB forthcoming since there is one for the Note 10.1, or there might not because your understanding is no other Samsung has more than 16GB?
Also, how much is it selling for at Sam's Club? I couldn't easily tell from the website (I'm not currently a member). $400 is the price I see everywhere here in the US.

Thanks for trying and for the tips! And yeah I'll be interested to see the list whenever you can get to it (no rush!).
Regarding default home launcher:
I had this issue with Action Launcher and it was resolved by dev...only thing is theres a bug in the play store with JB4.1.2 that showed up then which is probably what you're getting now. It has been resolved with 4.2 so it'll be flakey until Samsung pushes that out. The workaround atm is to use a root app to make your launcher a system app not user and that'll override until 4.2 comes our way.

You are right, I don't know which way it goes. Samsung usually releases a basic device and later releases either a 3G enabled or a different color, who knows? The Note at Sam's Club is $380. The biggest points for me are: an affordable protection plan and a longer (an actual hassle free) returning time. I figure I'll try the Note 8 as is and see whether or not I need the extra storage space for apps. I know of apps to install stuff to SD card but one needs to root the tablet. I've never rooted any phone or tablet and don't want to purchase something if rooting will be needed.

That's what I found too. Additionally, tt seems to have impact on paid apps only. I am using Smart Launcher. The free version works perfectly, paid version not. Although there is a "patch app" for Smart Launcher to fix this issue, it simply does not work on Galaxy Note 8.0. While at the same time works perfectly on Galaxy Note 2...... strange...

I just went into the Play store, and it let me download the new version... I store all of my projects to the Cloud service, so I just synced it and disabled the old copy... if you haven't tried it yet, the changes are very small - although I have to say it feels a bit more responsive, the icons seems a bit refined, and it does sync a bit faster than the previous versions... overall, not a massive/life-changing upgrade, but it's possibly worth it if you use it alot. :cyclops:

However, it's not a good way to treat customers... if they'll receive no updates for more apps (btw NFS Most Wanted for my N7100 not updated since many months), no one will be using samsung store, and i don't think it's what samsung wants as they are updating their store ("hubs") in an intensive manner, recently.
Sketchbook apps for note devices are in exclusive versions with spen support, that's a different story, they are great, and there is no other official source.
But atm it is a risk to buy a non-exclusive app from samsung if it is also reachable via google, as you can be left with no further updates.
Anybody tried contacting with samsung support? They are going to update PST? Or no such a plans?

There are many people complaining about it not being updated to 1.5 and samsung apps is bad at updating anything or even taking care of their store, I got the avengers game from there as they were giving it away free but when downloaded the game doesn't even start and they haven't updated that and couldn't even be bothered to check the user comments all complaining about this issue.
I went to the photoshop touch forum on adobe's website and saw that there were people complaining about not getting updates and the repliers who I think work on the app didn't know how to solve the problem and that was a post complaining about not getting an update for 1.2....or was it 1.3, anyways they still haven't solved the problem since then and I doubt they care as the app came free with the note 10.1
I went to ask about why upload to cloud doesn't work and was told to update to 1.5 so said about the problem to him and he didn't have an answer for me about the update issue, he kind of changed the subject
I like photoshop touch and it seems to have the biggest canvas I've used without any slowdown or relentless bugs like one art app I gave up with and just unistalled, another art app sketchbook ink, had high hopes for that but seems whatever you paint zoomed in shows blotchy when zoomed out so that's more money I lost on art apps that didn't work properly but apart from the really annoying non palm rejection and the fact that when you zoom out with your fingers sometimes the app doesn't pick it up and leaves marks on the art I'm doing and if I hadn't remembered to do another layer I have to go back and go over all the marks that I didn't spot earlier.
1.5 still hasn't got palm rejection btw and doubt it will for a while
I also like using photoshop touch more than the others because I'm colour blind and can only pick up a few colours without getting confused with other colours and they just have a small few colours and I can add my own pallette of colours by mixing...oh you know what I meant if you had trouble with colours.
I'd buy this app if I didn't already have it and my work that is in psd format can not be imported only saved on cloud plus why should I pay for something I got for free, I don't like this cloud saving it's just another way of getting money from people to sell them a little....empty space that's what is there but you can't see it only if you find it on a computer or whatever you have, next someone will come up with an idea for selling air and probably gravity one day.

I did not get an update notice from Samsung but was able to force the update manually.

we will have S5 system

ya we will have the Galaxy S5 system its just matter of time, I can confirm that !
I have some documents that can improve my confirmation.
But I cant show anything to you
And I can confirm that since 4.4.2 update we have some of the system files that we can modify it to get the S5 look and feeling
There is a trick that can change your status bar to S5 status bar, its to edit the build.prop and changing the device name & model to SH-900S, what im talking about is I did this trick to S3 & S2 but didnt change anything
We will all have the S5 UI, Touchwiz, launcher, status bar, elc.. in the few next updates maybe.
You can call me a lier, But I cant promise you anything
They're plenty of threads on this already.
I personally don't like the looks of the s5 stuff, I actually preferred the the s4's 4.2.2 status bar over the one on 4.4.2...
Some of my friends didnt like the S5 status bar too, so you are not alone
I think that you're right. We will get the new look on android 4.4.3 I think
Eh well to each there own .
At least we have have the option to customize :good:.

it's possible
me do not like
in system files from update for Galaxy Black Edition
after decompiling some system applications I saw some files as S5
Icons and other image files
That was today
I saw some files while extracting of original wallpapers Black Edition
What I don' get is, why are they filling our device up with s5 files but doesn't tell or use it, it is just extra storage gone :/
atleast don't put the files in our phones system
You have a point

In theory it saves samsung space on there drives, less mess.
They can keep say the s4 and s5 src code together as the same base src and just tell it which to output via makefile.
It's better that way, for all of us, it means we'll get the same updates that s5 gets, at least eventually.
But... lol, there is a but...
I don't think they do that lol, I'm pretty sure you have dl separate code for each phone.
I don't see why they couldn't do that..., but that's a diff topic .
What they are doing is probably just copying and pasting parts of the s5 code into the s4 code, and then setting a compiler path via some sort of makefile or something.
Or actually wait a min, wasn't it just some device id string in build.prob or something most of these files rely on to check the build?
Anyways I don't think most of this is a big deal.
Most of the stuff you would just gut out eventually when you tweak anyways, the rest you replace.
Like the launcher, unfortunately (I wish it had a 6x icon dock thingy, so I wouldn't need to use nova launcher).
And s-health, which is pretty much useless as a temperature reader.
The only thing I really like on the default samsung roms is the gallery viewer lol.
The only things I don't gut are the gallery, s-planner, contacts, phone, messaging, s-memo, s-translator, optical reader(about useless but still neat and works offline), voice recorder and phone app.
And I don't actually use the memo and planner lol .
Oh and the camera app, I use that alot even though it resets the darned exposure level each time it's started.
I should probably be using camera fv-5 instead more often (oh yeah that doesn't take movies...).
I do like the launcher though, I just can't fit all my sub folders down on the bottom.
Settings menu's are alright.
The htc one has some weird setup that reminded me of what little of seen of ubuntu so far.
Definitely better then aosp though.
As for the s5 stuff, I haven't seen anything I like about it :\.
They really don't seem like major changes.
The shot gunning connection thingy majigger can be done by the shell script cmd line I think.
It's just a network bridge.
I don't really see the point though, I think wireless n is fast enough, unless wanna make a cpu cluster out of an bunch of s4/s5's lol.
But if you were todo that, I'de sure hate to visit that server room, you'de get overwhelmed by the microwaves lol.
Sure is a selling point though, I was already asked if i could do that for my cousin's tablet, so he thought it was cool...

Samsung will never do this cuz it's all about money. if they include S5 system apps and features in S4, nobody will buy S5 so they force people to buy it.
You will see man, they did it to the S3 too
The S3 now includes some of S4 Features and style they even updated it with Group Play that wasnt expected right?

Yes they included some but they won't include ever all that would be possible. For example the weather widget is the old one and that's really simple to update it.

I'd be happy with the new launcher and icon set.. Though the newer versions of the tw default apps won't hurt as well.. i like the flatter look..
Hope full because Samsung has always updated this stuff on the old galaxy's as well.. S hit the s2 ui, s2 got the s3 ui and I think s3 hit the s4 ui..

The S4 is more than capable of running the S5 rom if Samsung were to directly port it over but they won't we will probably get a few things but they obviously want to sell the S5 so will probably hold back on a few things.

I just hope they wont change their strategy this year and leave our s4 with same look ...
Why oh why? ?
Sent from my GT-I9500 using Tapatalk
i believe we will get the newer TW but none of the apps and widgets. Based on previous phones
And then we can add the widgets and apps from s5 to s4 with root?
With costum rom is it possible that the s4 looks exactly how the s5?
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda app-developers app
with root yes, but if you root then you loose the warranty. I believe this is the last time i touch a Samsung device, because of the knox stuff.

I don't understand why everyone is thinking that if Samsung does not update my s4 , then I'll say, "hmmm I am a ****ed customer, let's buy the s5"!!!
NOOOOOO. I'll be an unhappy customer and I won't buy the s5, s6,s7,s8 and everything that has Samsung name on it.
On the other hand, if they keep me happy (meaning day one updates when they update their UI) , THEN I'll be a happy customer and possibly a loyal one and I'll keep buying Samsung staff.

Tab 3 8 Kit Kat. What's new?

I just got the kit kat update for Tab 3 8. I live in LA California. Wifi only and I had to force it using the check for updates option. So I can list a few differences I'm noticing. I'm pretty sure all this stuff is new but some of it might be stuff I missed with 4.2.2.
Transparent notification bar.
New multiwindow experience. Now it does not have that little tab hanging over the side. Now you swipe it in from the side. I haven't played with it, I still find it unusable.
You can customise the toggle ribbon more now. You still have to have tons of icons but you can pick the order and take a few out.
The lock screen has a now playing type widget that looks nice.
On-screen keyboard toogle for bluetooth keyboards. I actually am trying to write a screenplay on this tablet and I had to buy a stupid app to fix the stupid keyboard the stupid way it worked be stupid fore and now it works better and I bought a stupid app for stupid nothing. But I'm glad it works better now.
That's all I've noticed so far. I also don't use touchwiz, I use nova.
Tell me what you guys are noticing or if you find an official list of changes let me know. Thanks everybody

Jacksonville, FL here and no update available yet.
Cosmetically it's hard to notice the difference on the firmware, but under the hood there are some serious changes to the firmware, but all for the better.
The "Transparent Notification bar" was there on JB 4.2.2,
And "Multiple windows" is very functional now.
● TouchWiz is lighter and smooth now...
(I'm so happy with it's performance now, to the point I didn't bothered to install the Google Now Launcher yet...)
● Third-party apps can't write to External SD card anymore...
(There is a way if you root the device)
● Some extra new Wi-Fi settings.
● The keyboard is improved and the "Picture gallery" and other factory apps also received some TLC for the better.
But for me, the "Multiple User capability" is definitely th e Icing on the cake.

[emoji25] One year old device and already considered 2nd class and outdated by the manufacturer...
This is likely the first and the last update this device will see from Samsung.
I like Samsung devices, but I finally lost interest in buying any Samsung devices in the future.

auto brightness sucks.
I was hoping the autobrightness would get fixed. For me it's always way too dim. Where is the light sensor?

Autobrightness is horrible on the Tab3, it's fine on my S5 as well as previous S2 and other Android devices I've used. But the Tab3 Sucks, I'm always taking it off auto especially durring the day, dim as hell lol
