In terms of PPI and bragging rights, yes. The clarity is no doubt better. But such is the magic-trick employed by Jobs to distract you from the fact that they have no intention to change their aspect ratio or screen size of their phone which is pathetic (understandably so as they do not want to lose compatibility with their 200,000 apps currently).
However, in terms of day-to-day use, no. Even a normal monitor 22" 1080p monitor is nowhere as close as 200 ppi. Do you see people complaining?
Tiny fonts will mess with your eyesight faster than a not-so-high-ppi screen. If you opt to improve the default font size, then be prepared for a lot of scrolling when you're browsing the web.
iPhone = 960x640 3.5 inch @ 326 pixels per inch
HTC HD2 = 800x480 4.3 inch @ 217 pixels per inch
In short the HD2 has a bigger screen but the iPhone has a sharper display.
Edit: But I also agree w/ PoisonWolf
This thing with the Retina Display is another of Apple's tricks against customers. As the human eye cannot see above I think 300ppi it is useless. With the current hardware phone companies can build phones with screen resolutions up to 1440x900.Did you see anyone do it?No.What? Is everyone stupid except for Jobs?Again the answer is no.And the problem with the yellow dots on the screen is caused by that. This is not an innovation,it's another mistake by a company that only tries to show its products off as the best while they are not.
Don't forget the iPhone's screen supports 24-bit colors. The dis/advantage of this is truly dependant on the consumer. I for one prefer more bits as animated cartoons rely more heavily on color.
I would say no because the following reasons. 1 the human eye isn't going to notice a difference between 200dpi and 300dpi. 2. The screen size is still an issue. Whip out a full divx movie on an HD2 and watch it, then watch the same video on an iphone and its imbarrassing. The HD2 is just so so so much bigger. When you watch video on an HD2 you feel like you have a small TV in your hands, when you watch it on an iphone you feel like your watching a movie on your phone. Also we have yet to see how the iphone processes true HD video, on the HD2 its crystal clear with no dropped frames. I'd love to see if the new iCPU can handle that.
My co-workers next to me have the new iPhone 4 (and I just gave my wife my original G1), and the screen size of my new EVO makes it very very painful to view the iPhone and especially the G1 screens. I've been spoiled by my EVO.

Well,I was used to seeing movies on my Diamond,so even the iPhone's screen(iPod touch in my case) is a big one!
But seriously, the new generation of phones is just spectacular!HD2,Evo,Galaxy S,Droid X...They are all a home theatre made at pocket size! And in the case of the Evo and the Droid X they can get from the pocket to the TV!

ahh your talking about TVout function. I'm not sold on that one. Its a nice feature but I can't see using it more then once to impress people. In that case I would just drag my netbook along.

I'll agree on this one.You want to see something on the TV?Buy a DVD/Blu-ray player or a PS3!The phone will stay a phone.Dot.It's nice to have it though!
I read today in an article the droid x its scetchy at best. TV out is limited to pictures and video's you recorded on the phone.
The one thing I couldn't stand about the N1.
How does it compare? Is it just as responsive? Improved?
(Please only answer if you've previously owned a N1, thanks).
It's much much more responsive. Hyper sensitive, even. Plus multi touch works great too.
Sent from my SubCyan CM7 Google Nexus S!
Great! Looks like I'll be pulling the trigger on the S then - thanks!
the SAMOLED screen is the most quickest and responsive screen in the world, until something better comes along
it's perfect for games, and video quality
I would like to know what your reactions to the Nexus S are versus the Evo. I like the idea of everything except I have concerns about the camera and the smaller screen size.
Appreciate any comments!
i had an evo before the nexus...i prefer the nexus to the evo. from factor is better for me, love the samoled display, 16m colors as opposed to the evo's 65k. i take a lot of pictures with my mobile device. i havent been disappointed with the nexus camera versus the evo. four inch screen size is almost perfect. this in turn helps the battery life when compared to the evo. smaller screen which is supposedly more efficient, i see much better battery life with the nexus than i had my evo.
plus i wanted that pure goog.
Megapixels don't mean ****. The camera on the NS4G is much better than the EVO. I came to the NS4G from the EVO and I am not disappointed one bit. The GPU in the NS4G is better than in the EVO, so the phone is so much faster. No lag, not as many bugs as with Sense and the phone is just all around better. I know the specs are similar, but believe me when I say this phone blows the EVO away. For me benchmarks don't mean anything, but I scored a 2600 on Quadrant with the NS4G. The real test is real world use and this is where the NS4G blows the EVO away. Gaming, and anything processor or GPU intensive is a better experience and the Super Amoled screen is amazing. There are things about the EVO I miss like the HDMI port and the dev support, but I love my new phone and would never turn back. At first I missed the larger screen, but now I am used to the smaller screen and may even prefer it unless the resolution was better on the bigger screen which the EVO is not. Don't get me wrong, the EVO is a great device, but IMO the NS4G is better. There are a couple other threads like this one, so read around and you will see others opinions as well.
i compared them recently...
I have had them all (Hero, Evo, Optimus, Pre, etc...)
The Nexus is nice, and fast, but build quality does not compare with the Evo (which has great build quality.) Also the Evo has better connectivity (more reliable connections, faster throughput, etc.)
If you are not concerned with weight (Nexus 4.6oz vs. Evo 6 oz) I would wait for the Evo 3d in a few weeks time. In terms of size, the Nexus is longer, but more narrow than the Evo. The Nexus is slippery, so you will probably want a case, which really makes size comparable to a bare Evo (which has rubberized back so not as much need for a case IMO.)
As to the cameras, I compared them shooting the same scene at the same time. Evo has more detail, but the Nexus has much better white balance in artificial light. Take your pick.
(The only thing I like about the Nexus more than the current Evo is the higher contrast screen.) The current Evo 4G even has far better battery life in my experience.
IMO.
I was wondering why they made Android smartphones so big? For me the display size above 4.5 inches are useless. Who wants so big dimensions in his pocket? I had Note for a week. It was so uncomfortable. I even prefer 4.3 inch display instead 4.5 one. But these with small dimensions doesn't have good hardware.
Now according to my criteria there are only three phones with MONSTER hardware - Xiaomi MI-2 . MI-2S and Meizu MX-4
So I don't know what to buy.
What do you think? With this temp the displays will be 6 inches, which is ridiculous and ..... If I want tablet I will buy tablet.
It's a matter of opinion.
I went from a HD2 (4.3) to a SGS3 (4.8), and more and more I find even the size of my SGS3's screen to be too small. I watch a lot of films, play a lot of games and use my phone as an Ereader. Below 5" is too small for my taste. I'm actually happily anticipating the Note 3's potential 6" screen.
If all you do is the occasional casual game, post on a forum, read some webpages and do other, non-big things (More commonly referred to as 'the activities of the average iSheep'), a 4.5+" screen will probably feel bulky, yes.
Why would a small screen need heavy hardware? It's not as if it has to push a lot of pixels... . In fact, the hardware will be completely wasted as there is nothing one does that requires the processing power.

The three options according to GSMarena.com phone finder searching tool were Xiaomi Mi-2 , Xiaomi Mi-2S and Meizu MX-4.
I am really looking for Xiaomi. It is something great , but in this forum here people don't like it. And I know the reason.
The other variants are HTC One S , HTC First or Galaxy 4. (The last is big , but not enough to be compared to S4 , One and Xperia Z).
I guess it depends on what you do with your phone. What do you do that requires "monster" hardware and if it really does, how are you able to deal with the tiny screen size ?
I have the Galaxy S3 and the screen size is too "small" for the tasks that actually use the hardware to any great extent. Temple Run is okay, but many games are hard to play on such a small screen. I've watched Netflix on it quite a few times but it's never a really pleasant experience - my 10" tablet allows for video to be immersive, but the 4.8" screen is to small to really focus in on. It's too small to navigate most web-sites on without annoyance.
Is there a special program you use that needs high-end hardware ? Are you just not bothered by the tiny screen when it comes to the above tasks ?
I don't consider the S3 to be particularly "big" or "bulky" as I can fit it in my pocket and now that I'm using only bumpers for protection (along with screen protector and phone skin) it's really quite thin - so hardly bulky at all. If it can comfortably fit in my pocket I guess I don't find it that big. I can use it one handed, too.
Yes , the usage is the most important thing.
About the games - I don't play games often. I don't like FPS or somthing like that , cause now I am too old for this kind of games. And the experience is not as good as the one on the PCs. I have played only racing games. Especially Need for Speed Series and Asphalt.
Now on my phone (Galaxy W) I have only Temple Run 2 , Scrabble , Simple Chess. Temple Run 2 lags sometimes.
For films. I don't watch films on my phone. Even if I would have 5 inch phonblet. I watch sometimes only Youtube.
So maybe it isn't necessary to buy quad core phone. Dual is enough.
But for the RAM. Maybe it should be 2 GB.

I agree that the usage is what's important. Some companies do release some small phones, like Sony and Samsung. I'm actually a really big fan of the small android phones like the Xperia Ray, S3 mini, Xperia U... okay maybe they aren't that small compared to the Xperia Minis. but their size fits right in the palm of my hand and they're pretty slim and the hardware is pretty decent for their size (the Ray is amazing, still can't get over it).
The screen size, well it is user dependent, by that i mean it depends on what you do with your phone. Some games actually feel more comfy to play on a small screen (like Cytus, easy to reach the notes but sometimes hit notes by accident.) some are also comfy to play on a bigger screen because the UI might be too small (like Plague Inc. really small map. but you can zoom in if needed. its a hassle though). For me though i prefer watching movies on my Ray because the image looks clearer on smaller screens. which i enjoy.
One comment on screen size. its equally hard to use a full keyboard on a small screen as it would be on a big screen. still press the wrong keys by accident. but that's just me
If you don't want a big phone, don't get one. Pretty simple.

Normally I'd complain about someone bringing up a year-old thread with such an inane and unhelpful comment, but things have actually changed since this thread was active.
Firstly, I'll address your comment. Small Androids are plentiful, but good small Androids aren't. And small Androids with "flagship" specs are few and far between.
In fact, there's only ONE, the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact. Apart from the 4.3" 720p screen and smaller battery, it's every bit the beast of a phone as its bigger brother. Same processor, same 2GB RAM, same 20.7MP camera, same build quality, same software features, etc. In fact, since it only has a 720p screen instead of a 1080p, the Z1 Compact absolutely screams.
Even better, Sony is about to come out with the Z3 Compact (they skipped the Z2 Compact). Despite being exactly the same height and width, they're cramming a 4.6" screen (some rumors say 720p, some say 1080p) in there, and making it a hair thinner too. Dual front facing speakers, SD801 processor 2 or 3gb RAM (depending on the rumor), and the same software suite and 20.7MP camera as before.
Both are only slightly larger than an iPhone 5s or 5C, and much smaller than the current 5.0-5.5" flagship phones.
Oh, and they're waterproof.
These "Compact" Sonys are a departure from the "Mini" phones the other main manufacturers, like the Galaxy S4 Mini, LG G2 Mini, HTC One Mini(s), etc. which all are neutered spec-wise in many ways. Lower MP cameras, slower processors, less RAM, sub-HD screens, etc. And some are only "mini" in that they're not as huge as their bigger brothers, but could hardly be considered small.
The Droid Mini is a pretty good phone actually - all the specs of the Droid Ultra or Droid Maxx, but only available with Verizon in the US.
The Moto X is small for its largish screen size, and fits the hand (and pocket) nicely. It's substantially smaller than other 4.7" phones like the Nexus 4 or HTC One (M7).
I changed from my HTC Desire S to a Jiayu G3C, and it was a really big change for me. The Desire S was really good for one hand and fits perfectly in the pocket.. But the Jiayu it's really big. I think more than 4" is too much big to be called a "phone", is like I already see those phone as a "phablets"
I agree, many modern phones feel big and bulky. The range of 4-4.5'' is ideal for me.
Yes they're on the bigger side as of late as that trend continues to be in vogue, but holy moly are they lighter than any iPhone I've ever owned and used. I know the 5s is super light, but never owned one. I was used to the iPhone for awhile and never thought twice about its weight but after playing with some friends droid devices, the iPhone has always felt like a brick since then.
Nexus5 fits like a glove!
Personally, I thought the iPhone 4 was the perfect size because I could use everything on the screen comfortably with one hand. Now with my GS4 there are areas in the screen I just cant reach one handed the way I used to.
I think that They designed it for the user who often to play game and watch HD movie on their smartphone. Maybe that's why Samsung have "mini" version like Samsung S3 Mini.
But of course the can't make Galaxy Note smaller. It wouldn't be good.
It seems that soon enough we will have the Galaxy Alpha, which should be a good contender for the Z1 Compact (and it's straight successor, the Z3 Compact).
But I do agree with the OP, phones are getting a little too big for my tastes. Do notice I said "tastes", because it really is a matter of taste.
There are plenty of users willing to carry a larger device and take advantage of the added "screen real-estate".
For me are phones the best around 5-5,5 inch.
But maybe you can try out the HTC one mini or the LG G2 mini or the new Galaxy Alpha

I'm curious what you folks who came from the Nexus 6p think about this smaller phone. Are you regretting going with the smaller option? Loving it? I've ordered a Pixel for me and the missus (thanks to the TMo promo) and am fully expecting to have a love/hate relationship with the smaller phone. I mean, I totally miss having a reasonable size phone (my N6p is HUGE!!) but boy is it nice to have a large screen when I don't care about my phone being small.
I'm still a week or two away from getting our Pixels but trying to decide whether I should change my order to an XL or not.
I'm loving my Pixel. So much easier to handle. Battery life has been great. Camera is amazing. The only thing I miss are the front facing speakers. However, the Pixel speaker is plenty loud and sounds really good despite it being one speaker on the bottom of the device.

Thanks for the feedback! Oddly enough, I don't think I'll care much at all about the speaker. The N6p has great speakers but I never use them - almost always have better audio options available (7 Chromecast audios at home, B&O Bluetooth speakerphones that also sound great for music, car integrated Bluetooth, & a Bluetooth stereo headset). I think the last phone I has that wasn't too large was the OG Moto X. That was a long time and many phones ago!
The smaller phone is hugely liberating. Finally feels normal and just right. Heck, I wish it were smaller. I guess I never did adjust to the phablet madness. Now it fits in my pocket, cup holders, anywhere I can think of. I tend to worry less about it. It's less of a thin flat large slab that may bend. One handed use is so underrated. 4.5" would have been perfect though.
Okay, so the things I don't like are the price, it is definitely not hundreds of pounds better than the 6P, which was IMO 2015's best smartphone and the 6P held its own right up to now.
Then there's no 64gb option.
Then the design itself is also rather ugly at the back. Face looks awesome.
It hasn't added much to the 6P. It took a few things away from the 6P. The small size and the marginal speed performance differences made my mind up really.
It's not better than last year's. It's just a different phone. Because it HAS no last year model to compete with.
I have compared the camera on both and the camera is over hyped. It produces the same stills as the 6P does. However, focussing is better in video and stabilisation is finally here. Not forgetting to mention that it can do macros closer up. That's it really.

I have to admit the quality is not leaps and bounds better than the 6P. However, another important factor with the Pixel camera is speed. I had to settle for subpar pics with my 6P many times because the first snap wasn't great then I had to wait for HDR+ to process before I could snap another one. The Pixel allows me to snap pictures much quicker giving me more opportunities to get the shot I want.
Thanks all! You're helping me feel better with my choice of the smaller version. I'm not worried about the aesthetics since it'll be in a case most it's life. I'm really excited for this phone even if it's not a huge upgrade from the N6P. Definitely looking for that faster camera most of all!

My suggestion if you have a Best Buy or Verizon store near, is go and play with both for a couple hours. It's kind of daunting to come from a 6-inch screen to a 5-inch screen. You might find it that mrs. Prefers the 5.5 inch where you find yourself happy with the 5-inch or vice versa.

On the camera side of things - from the reviews I have looked at online the low light performance is superior on the Pixel when compared to the 6p, or any other phone camera for that matter.
I have the same situation too. I find 6P is too bulky..I kind of miss the Nexus 5 feeling. My biggest concern is the battery life because how significantly smaller the battery is compared to 6P.

Loving it!
So I'm a bit of a junkie. I switch phones every 6-12 months, going back as far as the HTC Desire HD.
I've been bouncing between Nexus and HTC Flagships for the last couple years, having had every HTC One and both the Nexus 6 and 6p.
While I AM still a huge fan of the large form factor of the 6p (I still haven't sold it yet, so I have been doing a lot of direct comparisons), I decided on the Pixel instead of the XL and I don't regret it. It's so comfortable, so fast, the battery is AMAZING, the camera is AMAZING, it's just so good. What I was most surprised with is actually the speaker quality! It is very clear and full sounding, especially for a single bottom firing speaker.
I don't know what else to say, I thought this would be more structured but it turned into a bit of a rant.

It's good I sub low-light but when it's really low light ois or manual is needed. Great camera otherwise,so much faster then stock 6P (there is now a hacked one in the 6P forum). I Have a pixel, this iPhone and a Huawei P9 and can't decide witch one to stay with but the pixel is really really good.

This ia precisely how I feel. The small form factor, the power and speed. The camera and battery life sold me. The price was high. I think no phone should ever cost this price. It's a phone and a social media toy. A camera even. That's it.
But as the market rate goes, this is the best phone for the money. RIP phablets. If more top end hardware was available for smaller handsets, I would wager phablets would be dead in quick succession.
One plus 3 really is the wild card of smartphones... It throws a spanner in my perfect Pixel world.

The one thing making my decision difficult is reduced resolution. I'm ready for smaller form factor but I've had qhd for such a long time that I'm not sure I'm ready for the compromises when going down to HD.
Can anyone please elaborate on their experience (gaming and multimedia) coming from higher resolution display?
I'm mostly concerned with Vainglory.

Can anyone please elaborate on their experience (gaming and multimedia) coming from higher resolution display?
I'm mostly concerned with Vainglory.

I never game on any of my mobile devices (I have a gaming PC 980ti, i74790k, 1440p display with Gsync). However, I do have the 6P and the Pixel side by side. I can't say I can tell the difference at all. I think you really have to go looking for the difference and squint to pick any minute details.
I've now had my Pixel 5" for 24 hours and I'm loving the size!

I'm the OP of this thread so I obviously came from a N6P, which is 1440p @ ~5.8". With that background, I can say that I love this screen even more than I loved the N6P screen. The drop in resolution isn't noticeable to me at all (my main monitor on my computer is 4k, so I get it and demand resolution).
The only situation I can imagine where the Pixel 5" resolution would be a problem would be with Cardboard/Daydream where the pixels are magnified. That's VERY secondary for me and I'd never change my phone decision because of that. Simply put, 1080p on this phone is pretty amazing! Don't forget that this is much sense of a DPI than any Apple phone.
Went from the 6p rooted and heavy use of xposed to a 2 week test of a stock 5x to see how the smaller phone felt...Definitely liked the smaller device, but that phone is under powered .. Got the 5 inch pixel last week and it is fantastic.
