NFC not working properly - Honor 8 Questions & Answers

Is anybody having any issues with NFC? I have NFC always on, but most of the times it doesn't work (doesn't read the tag), unless I open the magic tag app: the NFC icon is always there, but it looks like it gets deactivated somehow: I tried enabling the performance mode, but the issue is still there...
Thanks,
GM

Is the app protected in phone manager, battery?

NFC is an hardware feature, it looks like it becomes inactive and the only way to make it work is open an application that uses it, or turn it off and on again, and this behaviour makes it useless..

I am using it quite often and I did not have this issue. I have it always turned on and it never turned off. Which rom do you have? (B1**) because in the last update they have done some changes.
However since I have never seen a H8 with this problem a factory reset might help.

NFC is hardware but requires software like IR. And battery management and memory management sometimes messes with them.
Try backup (Huawei native backup app), factory reset and restore.

I checked and both magic tag and nfc service are set not to be optimized: I can't find magic tag in the list of the protected apps though.....

Have you factory reset it? No one complains about it

Definitely not a problem on mine either. Maybe if you tried a factory reset like mentioned previously, or ensured you're running the latest version of firmware

Some recently installed app could have messed with it. Try a factory reset and check with the apps as you install it.

hello, mine is not working at all. may be a hardware problem? i just got the phone and i couldn't do the tap to transfer with my old phone, and i can't read tags i made with trigger. also the native app won't read them. of course nfc is on

I realized that the NFC doesn't work when you place the honor 8 back to back with another phone. The receiver for the NFC seems to be at the top, so what I tried was pointing the top of the phone towards the back of another phone and it worked.

That's kinda bad, but not as bad as Sony's placement (at the front)

I have never encountered this problem with my H8.Try factory reset,if that does not work then maybe there is a problem with the rom you are currently using.

True!That's odd

It is indeed very odd, I spent hours fuming that I might have purchased a faulty device but I just thought to try it and bingo. Small annoyance when compared to how nice of a phone the H8 is overall.

Since I don't use NFC very much, I don't any issues with placement, but it annoys me a little when using it.

Is there a way to uninstall or turn off The magic tag app?

NFC Service Optimized? Magic Tag Optimized>?
How? Where is Magic Tag? I can't find it as well... Help!

For me, the NFC problems (which were severe) were fixed with the Nougat update.

[Q] Alternate use as a media device?

This may be a silly concept, but on some of these older phones, would it be possible to create a branch of CYGN development that simply removes the phone component of the rom? My idea is that all the functions would remain, but simply be disabled/hidden from the user. This could add some life to older phones whose cellular radios have malfunctioned, or people like me who simply like the CYGN interface, and would want to have a mp3/video player like this.
Additionally, the standard development would remain, so that if the phone needed to be re-purposed again, all you would need to do would be to flash the "+phone" rom.
Anyone care to tell me if/how bad an idea this is?
Thanks
Why can't those people who don't have a working phone part just ignore it and use it as a media device rather than flashing a whole new ROM just to get rid of it.
right, but supposedly there is a phone server that would suck some battery,
but it could be accomplished by putting the device in airplane mode.

Hell, is that all it takes? I thought "Airplane Mode" disabled all radios...
How destructive do you believe it would be to disable/uninstall the "phone" or "dialer" apps? Or is that not recommended under any circumstances?
Thanks again for your reply
Seems like a lot of work to compile a ROM and go through all the trouble, just don't use the dialer, and if you do, so what, no sim, no call, no money.

You can use apps like titanium backup to freeze the app and test yourself. I think it should work but there is a chance for a force close loop that can only be fixed by reinstalling the ROM.
Want to add I would leave the dialer just take it off the home screen because it is a law that even without service cell phones have to be able to dial emergency numbers. Without it if something happened and you needed to dial 911 it would be there.

[Q] I need a logging app to figure out what's occupying my camera.

I'm in a bit of a pickle. At some point in the last week I did something or put something on my phone that's now occupying my camera and preventing me from recording anything. Pictures still work. Whether this means something is recording, I don't know. I disabled the camera with another app, but that's no solution.
I'm not rooted. I need an app that can log at some level what apps are using my camera so that I can uninstall the offending app. My wifi also recently started disabling itself during use, and I can't figure that out either. If you know of something that can inform me on both problems, please do pass that my way. I've been unsuccessful on my end so far in my search.
I just don't have enough information to troubleshoot these issues, the only viable option I have atm is a factory reset, and that's not a solution, it's just a shortcut.

The same thing happened to me, Turned out Google Now was causing the problem however It's been resolved now for me as i have it enabled again
Allowing "Google Now" voice detection "From Any Screen" seems to be the culprit. Set "From Any Screen" to off to take videos.

It doesn't seem to have been fixed for me yet. I just verified that's the cause, that's a relief. I really like that feature, how unfortunate.
My wifi hasn't been disabling itself today, but how would I troubleshoot it when it does? It's a really annoying problem, I don't tend to use data.

I'm not entirely sure what's causing your WiFi problem, However to see if you can recover the Google now feature make sure your device is up-to-date and your app is up-to-date, Have you tried Rebooting the device :/ Really Not sure on the Wi-Fi buddy

Hi there,
I discovered recently that my phone cannot connect to any NFC tags/devices. I can switch NFC on/off but for some reason when I try to see a NFC tags nothing happens.
I tried different ROM (MM), kernels and modems, tried to wipe all data to start from new base, nothing happens.
Any idea ??

I tried to wipe all data and settings but It didn't solve the problem...
Did u solve it?
I read that the NFC needs to be activated by Internet.... But they don't say how to do that.
Help please...

You don't have a metal plate in the back for use with a magnetic car mount do you? I have one in the back of phone case phone which really limits the area you can tap to read a tag. It can still be used but it's a very small region that will pick it up.
I also assume that you have tried multiple NFC tags? They can become damaged and no longer readable. Also you can't place your tag on a metal surface or it won't work either.
All things I assume you know but thought I would mention anyway.

Google Pixel No Sound issue

Guys, this issue has been pestering for a month now and I seem to have not found a fix for this yet. I first started to notice the problem with my phone when I was unable to attend the calls, the screen will usually get stuck or i will not be able to swipe up the green button during the call. Even if sometimes I manage to i will be able to hear the other person speak but I wont be able to speak to them. So sometimes once I restart the phone it will seem to work fine for an indefinite period of time and again it starts.
Then things started getting very bad, sometimes during normal device usage, the screen just turns to a monochrome black and white screen ( just as you see when there was no signal on older television sets). And when I switch to the bootloader screen, when I power the device on, I get a very thin green line for an instant on the screen and then the booting sequence starts.
I have made a lot of factory resets and stock image flashing, and by far I noticed one considerably situation, the times when the sound functions fine, the booting sequence where the 4 google dots animation appears and when there is no sound, the booting sequence gets stuck on Google and made by Google screen.
Other observations are during abnormal device behavior, no function related to sound will properly. To elaborate it, Google assistant wont work, videos cannot be played and even the system sounds wont be heard. I am open to suggestions here. Please let me know what can be done to test the phone out. FYI I know there is a problem with the Pixel microphone, but I am not convinced that its the exact problem. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thank you.
Sounds like a hardware defect. RMA if possible.

It is a hardware issue indeed, I am facing the same issue, I contacted google , they told that replacement is possible tho I'm out of Canada at the moment so I'm just dealing with it through my Bluetooth earphones, everybody works fine with Bluetooth.
That's the only way I suppose!...did you get the phone directly from the Google store?...are they accepting phones bought from a retailer?...since I am in Singapore now...Google support is next to nothing here...try contacting them but it's of no use...only when I get to India I will be able to go forward with the replacement!.....but the thing is .... yesterday...I updated the phone to Oreo and the audio stopped working completely....and after repeated switching between safe and normal mode....the speakers are working now...but the microphone is still busted.
This happened to me, I was given a replacement phone from EE UK
Current update guys...as per the pixel support centre person's suggestion ...I rebooted the device to safe mode to check if the phone is operating normally ...which it did not....but surprisingly ...after restarting to normal mode ...it started working normally again...my query is how is this zeroed down to an hardware issue if in case it's perfectly working for a while and at some point goes bonkers...can you guys please enlighten me on this...coz I don't have much knowledge on the hardware field.

Tough luck mate! Sorry to hear that....you can check it out by pressing down the power button until you get the power off and restart menu. Keeping pressing down on the power off menu...it will reboot to safe mode without your prompt. In safe mode for me it was the same....maybe you will have a better luck...try it out!

well, its been almost an hour the phone wont turn sound back on.
Keep switching it to and out of safe mode...at some point ideally at least the speakers must start lest the microphone. Tried contacting Google about it and no response at all...mine started acting weird only for the past month...I suppose from the Aug months patch update....tried reverting it back to previous stock versions...but I suppose the damage is permanently done
When I contacted google, they told me to send it back to Canada and let someone there give it to google.. which won't happen in my case , my phone also started acting like this after Oreo beta . Now I will restart the phone whenever it happens to get it back working :/
The only reason I am still sticking to this phone is coz of it's camera. Planning to get back to India around December to get this fixed. Support for pixel in Singapore now is next to nothing since it wasn't launched here. I had no problem at all with the Nexus line up but this is kind of a disappointment.

Planning to do just that....I may have better luck with a custom kernel...will post an update once I have flashed it.
I had been on the 8.0 beta for a while. Then got 8.0.
Though just 2 days ago, my mic was starting to have issues. Then yesterday, only my speaker phone would work.
Now I can't get any audio/mic except though Bluetooth (I've got a portable speaker with a mic, and Bluetooth on my car.
Contacted Google support. Will be getting a replacement on their warranty.
They didn't tell me this, but I did some searching, and apparently many of the pixels (mostly from the first 3 months of production) had an issue with the soldering of the audio codec. though usage, little bumps here and there, that soldering can get loose. Which explains why my audio and mic were spotty, and within an hour yesterday morning, all aspects of it stopped working.
So, it's a hardware issue.

November 2020 security update is now available

Hi,
Just got it
Only 7MB... I don't think it will fix performance errors after several days
By now I highly doubt these updates have ever fixed anything
I'll probably still have to restart my phone every day to keep it snappy.
Yes, at least for me bugs are still here. Made a clean install
Our device is officially abandoned by Xiaomi even though there's still 8 months of security patches for it. They just refuse to fix anything since they updated to Android 10. I had a slight hope but not anymore.
Funny thing, if you use the navigation gesture the icon text is bigger lol
For exemple, in the app drawer it will display "Chro" instead of "Chrome".
If you go back to 2 buttons navigation the display is correct.
Dont know how to fix that without tweaking dpi in dev option...
Wanted to test again the stock version but it's not very good... lol
Could you report if it has been any improvement?
I'm using it second day and RAM management is much better, phone feel more snappy then v11.0.10.0.
Problems with "customize your pixel" and "add another email account" are still present.

I can confirm that, I can see an improvement too. The fingerprint reader also works better.
Unfortunately, the transfer of USB files to the memory card is completely unstable. Sometimes I have to reset my phone to see the changes.
For me, these are the first changes since updating to Android 10. Unfortunately, many things still don't work, for example Volte.

I tried, Volte in my country stopped working since android 10 update. It worked fine on android 8 and 9. Now I have Volte in options (it's not translated...), it is active and the phone still logs to 3G while talking. Many people have complained about this on the official Xiaomi forum but it has not been corrected. The code *#*# 86583#*#* also gives nothing. Yes. Don't expect a fix any time soon. We're only getting security fixes and that's not a security issue
Battery is draining faster since the update.
Battery seems ok to me. At least the same as before when i was using custom rom.
But i am pretty sure that my battery is dying as i cant get more than 6h of screen on time now, no matter what rom/kernel i use lol
I'm not getting any update. May it be because of unlocked bootloader? I'm still at May security update for now.
