XZ Dust under the glass, beware of yours - Sony Xperia XZ Questions & Answers

Xperia XZ dual just released in Thailand for a week. However I got reports from many people (at least 3 XZs) with dust got stuck between the front glass and digitizer (mine was also one of them). Its hard to spot because it can be very small. You have to look very very very carefully.

Can you post a pic of the issue?

I exchanged for the new one already. Anyway, its hard to take a pic since the spot is too small.

Box included screen protectors

Since I haven't found a thread about this, for those who are curious about the screen protectors that are included in the box.
I've tried them on, its not oleophobic and its not scratch proof. Oh and it makes the phone look less good, because of the funny triangle cutoff they made.
Keeping them on for now till i get my hands on some better quality protectors... (getting Spigen GLAS.t) or might as well go naked glass and remove the antishatter film... but a screen like this.. deserves some extra protection... as long the protection itself doesnt make look bad.
Several threads about this already. In every post that talks about the provided screen protectors, it's been discussed they are not oleophopic, etc.

See if you have applied it properly. The NFC logo does cause a bump in the screen protector. Weird.
You still got the NFC sticker on under the back screen protector?

My included screen protectors went on the day I had the phone - in my experience the highest chance of scratching, dropping, scuffing or knocking a new phone is in the first few days and weeks when your hands aren't quite used to the shape and size of it.
I'll keep these on until they start looking tatty - which may not be very much longer, especially for the back one - then relace with something nicer.

It was applied perfectly well thank you very much.
Sony confirmed to me that they cause issues with the camera flash in low light conditions and have agreed to replace my phone due to the original factory fitted protectors being scratched.
Please don't jump to stupid conclusions that people don't know how to apply screen protectors. I am almost 40 and have been using mobile phones since the very first bricks and have been applying screen protectors since they first came out also.
Cheers.

I removed the NFC logo. I'm getting my phone replaced and will be putting the new one in a case and having an invisible shield on the front.
Cheers
I immediately put on the Front AND Back screen protectors included in-box for my C6603 AFTER taking off the NFC sticker, but kept the anti shatter screen on as well, after hearing it was incredibly prone. My XZ hardly picks up any fingerprints or dust, and has no scratches whatsoever. Also, I've found everything about the viewing angles and contrast to really not matter at all in general use - but this is my first phone since the good ol' LG Cookie.
I getting these! http://dx-box.com/imak-anti-fingerprint-layer-screen-protector-for-sony-xperia-z.html
I currently have the screen protectors on that came with the phone and they suck lol ugly triangle cut, finger prints get on easily, scratch easily but, w/e there're temporary no more f****** dust! so, when i get these Imak screen protectors i will let you guys know if they are good or not!

Dude... if you got yours paste by the shop and yours got a bump caused by the NFC sticker... please go and smack the person who paste the SP for you because they should remote that sticker first before pasting the SP.

Screen cracks easily?

Over on another (swedish) forum we're seeing some rather disturbing reports of screens cracking for seemingly no reason.
Some have reported cracks after simply placing their phone on a table, others by just having it in their pocket.
Do we have XDA member with similar experiences?
Given the number of times it has dropped from the table because it's so rediculously slippery, to no ill effect on the glass, it doesn't seem too bad. I might have been lucky, though.
Sent from my D6603 using Tapatalk
It doesn't crack easily, but it seems to happen yeah.
I know this was an issue with the Z2 as well (know 1 or 2 ppl suffering from it) and hope it's not a wide-spread one with the Z3. The fact that it performs as some hoovercraft thingie floating over flat services is kinda annoying though, fell a few times here as well already but luckily no damage so far.
phones have glass screens. Glass screens break on some occasions. Water is wet.
add every report you can find and what do we get? 20? lets make it 100. Of 100 000 phones sold (which is serious lowballing) that is 0.1%.
so even if it seems bad it's not really an issue
As long as iitgets repaired by Sony you mean....
of course, like on the z2.
i think a lot of people are just careless.. i mean who buys this type of phone and already in less than 2 days of owning it, they managed to cracked the screen by dropping it or sitting on it while in their pocket. sh*t happens but if people were more careful i doubt we'd be seeing all these 'broken screen' threads.
IMO the z2 was one of the most sturdy glass screen phones ever, this z2 drop test is pretty amazing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BGQtfDZNt4
so unless something in the glass was changed between the two versions i don't see how the z3 can be any worse than the z2.
Well I accidentally tested the sturdiness of the phone when I pulled my jacket up and forgot that phone was on top of it. Well nice 1,5m fall with some momentum and not a single scratch. Phew.
Its Gorilla Glass 3, so I don't think it should be any weaker or stronger than other Gorilla Glass 3 phones out there. Any quality issues is probably Corning's fault.
Update: according to Sony they use both Gorrila glass 3 and Dragontrail glass. I have heard Dragontrail is slightly less scratch resistant but thats about it.

On the contrary, Dragontail is harder than GG3...... resists scratches more - but at the detriment to viewing angle quality which is why DT is on the back.
I didnt't notice ANY scratch resistance of the glass backplane. Just use it carefully for a few days - enjoy a nice collection of scratches to stay. Deeply disappointing.
Agreed, seems no matter how careful I am it'll just pick up tiny scratches on the back..seemingly from little specs of dust..I don't understand.

There is a table in this link, it shows GG3 as being higher on the hardness scalle by small amount over Dragontrail.

Wow, you guys are scaring me.
I think the cracked screen problem is not from dropping it, or sitting on it. It's that the screen cracks by itself even when just sitting on a table somewhere. People are blaming the temperature difference between a hot phone and a cool surface for stressing the glass and cracking it.
I dunno, I'm in no hurry to upgrade just yet, we'll see.

I posted some pics in another thread here. Hoping it's just a fault with the device

BBC Watchdog did a story on this for the Z1, now there are new complaints coming in about similar issues on the Z3.
BBC Watchdog link for Z1:
http://www.xperiablog.net/2014/05/3...peria-z1-cracking-screen-issue-sony-responds/
I chose this phone over the M8 due to the Camera, I kept insureance for the Z3 with T-Mobile just in case I get this issue when my phone arrives. Depending on how things turn out with more and more people complaining, I might just have to get the M8.
HTC gives free one time cracked/damaged screen replacement within 6 months in US as part of HTC Advantage. Sony should do the same, especially with their screen issues.
There are theories about uneven expansion of surfaces under heat stress causing cracks due to the way the glass is glued.
I have not experienced the cracking issue but I did notice a scratch on the glass on the back of the phone not even a week after getting it. It's not too bad, and not even really visible in direct light, but you bet I slapped a case on that thing as fast as I could.

I'm sure its a minority getting this issue but still seems to be a lot more than other manufacturers which is alarming. I made my dad get the HTC M8 over the iPhone 6 just for HTCs' Advantage program of one time free screen replacement.
I'm so glad I bought the white version because I can barely see the scratches on the back! It used to drive me crazy on my old black Z1 :silly:

[Q] Has anyone had their glass on the back become unglued?

I got my Xperia Z3 (T-Mobile variant) on 10/22, but had to send it back the next day due to the bottom right corner of the back glass coming unglued and popping up about 1mm. Has anyone else had any issues with this? Does it affect the water tightness of the phone? My new one will be here today and I'm hoping it was just a rare defect.

Oops, guess I need to read what I actually type better. Meant about 1mm (above the inlay of the glass). Unfortunately I don't have pictures, and I've already sent it back.
I also have this, but on the bottom left corner of the back. It's really really tiny tho.

Z5 camera lense

Hi could sumone tell me if my z5 has got a protective film on the lense cuz its scuffing really easy feels oval when i run my finger over it i cant seem to get it of it is
Had to crop it its not cracked just seems to get scuffed easly
For some reason some xperias just dont have that coating on the glass that stops it from being scratched easily
If this is bothering you perhaps contact sony repair or even DIY something?

I had the same problem with my first Z5 here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z5/help/camera-glass-stain-t3434109/page1
It's a problem due to a protective UV layer on the lense that goes away and spread over it.
I know you can't fully remove it even with toothpaste, q-tip or whatever.
It's just an aesthetic problem it does not influe on your photos.
Mine did that only a week after I bought it, the seller gave me a new one and that's it, no more problems since.
Trust me, you can't remove it and, if you're lucky, it will not change your photos (mine did some blurry photos) as I already said it's just a aesthetic problem, if you want to change it or not that's up to you but don't worry this isn't that serious.
Check the last message of the topic I've linked it should help you

ok thanks for ur help i probably would have to take it to a repair shop to get it sorted?
As I said that's up to you, if you want a brand new one, go ahead, if you don't care about it and it don't bother you, keep it.
I personally sent it back to the seller and he gave me a new one but a month after.
Don't understand why a Great Leading Phone Brand like Sony have the idea of using plastic material for Sony Xperia's Camera Lens. That's the reason why the camera lens is so easy to get tons of small scratches over a short period of time; hence, reducing the quality of the camera.
If you guys want to protect the lens, I suggest buying this accessories: http://stcoptics.com/en/products/phone-lens-glass-protector/
It's quite expensive but if you guys want a cheaper but less-quality choice, simply buy a back-side protector firm and manually cut it to fit the Xperia Z5 size.
Hope you guys could benefit from my humble post,
SirDoHa
OK thanks think I'll just get a new lense and replace it as I can't get another one as I brought it 2nd hand was a good price too

Black spot on camera (SOLVED)

So I got my s7 and after a week I try to take a picture today but see a lil black spot on the back camera.. Camera glass is clean without any scratches.. Very weird.. It stays in the pictures and video after taken as well.. Anybody with the same issue or a fix?

From a friend
So it turns out I did some research and it seems it was some dust trapped on the lens cover inside.. Some how it got in with a waterproofed cased phone.. But the fix was actually tapping the phone on a hard surface a few times and the spot vanished.. Weird but it solved the problem.. Make sure u don't damage your phone tapping it and do it with a hard case at your own risk

Got absolutely the same spot in my daughter's phone. A technician proposed to replace the camera. After I've read above, maybe a cleaning only will work. We'll do it this week.
Ive got the same problem but about 5 specs. I've only had the phone for about 4 months. Ive replaced the rear camera lens glass but thats not got rid of it. The next step is to replace the camera module (£15 on ebay). But I'm worried i'll break the rear cover leading to more expense. It's a shame because its a good phone. None of my smart phones have lasted a year! Something always breaks. I had more joy with a g4 plus camera until my son threw it in the bath. I think Im going to sell this pbyone to someone more confident with repair and buy a Xiaomi from China.
---------- Post added at 02:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:27 PM ----------
I should add that this is shocking quality. A supposedly water proof phone that on launch cost over £500 with the camera as a main selling point. A quick google search will tell you that this issue frequently occurs on s5, s6, s7 etc. I think Samsung are more happy to sell new phones than make phones that last longer than the launch of the next model.

If you can't keep a phone without breaking it, the problem is on your end.
Well this s7 has been looked after. Its had a couple or waist height drops but it has a griffin case.

Thanks a lot for the suggestion..i heard about it in some other blog and dint believe it until i saw it here on xda.... Surprisingly this happened with note 8.... And still surprising is the same solution..... Thanks again...
Tapping didn't work for me. I bought a new camera module off of AliExpress for $5. Paid a phone shop $5 to get the back off. Replaced the lens myself. The camera is perfect now. You must make sure the lens is exactly the same down to the colour of the flex and writing on it. The first two I got failed because they were different versions. Some ebay sellers use the wrong photo in their listings.
I had the same problem. Solved it perfectly by holding the phone 60 degrees on a flat surface with a little cloth on it and letting the phone face down drop on the surface. I dropped it face down because my front camera was affected. I had a screen protector and a case + cloth on the table so no damage what so ever. Just drop it. The dust will somehow move. I think this solution is better than digging into the lens and removing it. If the problem persists than take it to a service.
I tried that first and it didn't work. It cost me 10 bucks to replace the lens. Shops have a hot plate so they can remove the back cover easily. With the new lens my camera has far superior image quality. I think it was more than just a bit of dust that was wrong with it. The lens was damaged. Another issue can be the inside of the glass on the back cover gets dirty. Just replacing or cleaning that when the back cover is off made my pictures clearer and stopped the camera over exposing every shot.
Buddy, is it tape it on the camera phone or the whole phone?
Do you mean tap? You could try trapping or shaking the phone to move dust to the side but that didn't work for me. I replaced the camera lens and you should clean the inside of the protective glass on the back cover too.
