$$ BOUNTY $$ thread for ROOT on LG v20 H990DS (CLAIMED by @emdroidle!) - LG V20 Guides, News, & Discussion

THE BOUNTY IS BEING CLAIMED! CONGRATULATIONS @emdroidle!
YES YOU READ CORRECTLY. ROOT ON V20 H990DS is NOW AVAILABLE!
NEW USERS: Read from approx pages 45-60, where MOST users have learned of the root process, CAREFULLY implemented it following steps with caution and ROOTED their H990DS with success! A NEW THREAD has been created by the ROOT PROCESS owner, @emdroidle, here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/development/dirtysanta-h990-t3624296/
The method is viable and working for at LEAST 15 different people. So, rest assured this is not a "flash in the pan" or fluke, its legit and working! This thread is as good as closed. Here's some HIGHLIGHTS from the dev:

The only problem I am currently aware of is USB-C to HDMI isn't working, my adapter was outputting a bad frequency my display couldn't handle [i doubt many people need/use this]
I've got some hopes of making the whole root process simpler, but that may be quite a bit of work. Problem is we're constrained by what SE Linux allows. Working around SE Linux makes things really complicated. I've also got the tasks of needing security updates and getting lined up with the tip of LineageOS's tree.
I can only know the number of people who report success, there could be many more who never report. I think we've got more than 15 reports [as of 2 weeks ago], so seems pretty functional within the limitations (several of the steps being kind of complicated).

NOTE: Unless you plan to contribute some dollars via Paypal to the developer (who put countless weeks, arguably months) into trialing and testing his process, then there really is NO OTHER REASON TO REPLY TO THIS THREAD. If you'd like to contribute, then by all means, you can do so DIRECTLY to the developer via Paypal by clicking here.
CONTRIBUTION PLEDGES ARE LISTED BELOW! Even further below, I will post those who are confirmed to have **PAID** their bounties.
SIDE NOTE FROM THE OP: Sorry LG, you've lost me as a customer. You don't "randomly" unlock SOME bootloaders of V20 and leave the H990DS model customers hanging. I won't be returning to your brand of smartphones in the future, either. Great job on customer/developer support in your OWN community you pack of knobs!

Has not been released by LG to my knowledge and going by their recent shady past, they only typically release one random US model's bootloader unlock and don't bother with the rest. Eitherway, I'm happy to pay someone to get root for me. Are you in?

Well mine is due to be delivered this afternoon. And in theory if the bootloader can be unlocked then the already root method should work. When i get home tonight i will see if the bootloader can be unlocked.
---------- Post added at 01:06 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:21 AM ----------
Ok so i got mine and first thing i tried was trying to get into fastboot and it wouldn't work. Suggesting bootloader cannot be unlocked.

@poczynek You are probably right. However, it took a few months for devs to release the root method that actually worked with the LG G4 dual, despite the bootloader being locked. Eitherway, I'm happy to contribute to get root at minimum. Where did you source yours?

Yes got mine through Ebay for $806. DWI currently have them for that price too on Ebay and are good to deal with. Much better than $1100AUD. Although you won't get local warranty ... but a saving of $300 is good enough for me!

I will also officially pledge $50 AUD for the H990DS model.

I will pledge $20 AU for the h990ds.
Sorry it can't be more but am unemployed at present. If things improve I will increase the pledge.

Count me in for 50$

I'm in for £30 sterling.

I'm in for 100USD for the 990DS.

i can contribute with 50 US$

Put me down for $20 US
But we really need root + TWRP

I'm in with 20USD as well for H990ds.

All credit, and a personal thanks goes out to open1your1eyes0 for the use of his S4 Bounty template here.
I put priority on getting this up quickly - so pretty directly used his format to get the bounty thread up and running.
Bounty Details
While other S5 variants have been fortunate enough to receive root (and on some, unlocked BL) upon release day, we over here on the Verizon have had the unfortunate experience of ever-increasing doubt in whether root will be achieved on our device. As the logical (and expected) progression from the S4, the S5 is locked down tighter than a drum - and the consensus on this device is that root would be worthy of higher accolades, than what root and unlocked bootloaders would have garnished in past Galaxy devices. I would like to personally offer a $500 bounty to the first person able to find or create a method, exploit, or unlock that allows us to fully root and provide the necessary steps for rooting the Verizon (and now, ATT) Galaxy S5 here on XDA. I am hoping this bounty, as with any others that choose to pledge here, would be a helpful motivation to the developers willing to invest the time and effort in helping us unlock the potential of this great new device. Or (where applicable) that this bounty will be a humble counter-offer to other potential sources of revenue for such work.
As the level of difficulty increases with each new device, the level of appreciation and admiration for those willing to find (and help find) such exploits increases exponentially. I cannot express my gratitude enough, for those who choose to tackle such an endeavor. In this vein, I would highly encourage any and all VZW/ATT S5 users to consider pledging a donation towards the efforts in helping us achieve this first-step. Please consider chipping in to this bounty, as this can only help increase our chances - and will help keep our variant in the minds of those who are willing and capable of finding an exploit. Those who want to help find an exploit, such as myself, but that lack the knowledge and experience in linux/java - this is your opportunity to help by contributing within your means. To reemphasize; this bounty is for achieving a root method/exploit only, and will apply to an unlock that precedes an explicit root method.
Greatly looking forward to anyone interested in becoming a candidate in this challenge to find a means for root.

$200.
With all the crowd sourcing sites popping up, surely there should be a way one can set up a true "conditional" pledge somewhere.

Verizon, Att, and Sprint users with a locked bootloader have decided to put a bounty for the following:
Working root for the Lg V20 devices with locked bootloaders
As a plus a working recovery would be nice as well
Sometimes on a device there are methods, procedures required that go above the nromal developers or end users scope of capabilities
The lg V20 us variants besides the t mobile one is one of those devices.
Us users are requesting that established developers help with this and as a way of saying thanks and as tokens of appreciation have decided to reward the developer/developers monetarily
We are using the pledge method as directed by a moderator to be the most effective way to go
Please do not clutter this thread with non related questions or comments
The guidlines are as follows:

Count me in for $30
Edit: sprint variant
FYI those putting offers up: Pick either bootloader unlock (very unlikely) or root (quite likely). Bootloader unlock means you'll be fully rooted via TWRP within seconds. I already have TWRP ready for every variant - once one has it, they all have it. A bootloader unlock is worth MUCH MORE than a root, and is a permanent solution.
I wasn't sure if this qualified as clutter or not, but:
I'd like to make sure people understand that I will not be involved in any process to attempt to unlock or root the locked bootloader variants of the V20.
I do not participate in devices with locked bootloaders. (so please don't ask me, as many are and I find it frustrating)
That said, I am happy to bring TWRP to your devices if someone can figure out how to crack the signature verification of aboot in order to allow booting custom boot images.
I'd also like to make note to any developers interested in the task of getting selinux to permissive:
There's a lot going on at https://github.com/timwr/CVE-2016-5195/issues/9 and you may want to read through. A few methods have been discussed and succeeded, although this device doesn't qualify for many if any of them so far.
I'll put in $10 and volunteer to be a tester as long as I don't end up with a brick. ☺
Edit: sprint varient here.
I'm in for a $20 for the sprint variant
Sent from my LG-LS997 using XDA-Developers mobile app
$20 for a method that works on the sprint variant.
$20 on the sprint variant
$100.00 for root (Verizon) or $50 for working hotspot/Foxfi
$100.00 donation paid to @me2151
It's not much but I got a 20 spot for the Att variant.

Hopefully folks will stick to their word if nothing else. It's so worth it to me and I may end up sending more if I can swing it by then.
$30 for Sprint variant
$20 for AT&T.
80 for vzw vareint, still have not taken any ota's. Can not unfortunately be a tester.
$50 for working bootloader unlock for AT&T variant.
Edit: I feel like there needs to be some kind of way to enforce bounty payments..
$100 VZW / $50 FoxFi/Wifi Tether
$100 VZW / $50 FoxFi/Wifi Tether
So far there is 730.00 in bounties. I will throw in 40.00 for Verizon BL unlock and root. Making the total 770.00. Maybe this is something @Chainfire could do, but I am not sure.
$50.00 for ATT

[Bounty] Unlock Bootloader VZW Pixel 3 XL

Bounty will be awarded to the first CONFIRMED successful method to unlock the bootloader on a Verizon version of the Pixel 3 XL. MOD EDIT: No money can be collected or pooled on XDA, Bounties are pledges ONLY. Thanks for understanding
Just say how much you'd be willing to put in and I'll update this post with your info including donation amount.

$25, have regular pixel 3 so would need to work both models.
Coming from the 2XL, best of luck. Was a total mistake buying it from Verizon and will never do it again. I encourage you all to get it unlocked from Google. If you need the financing, you can get it elsewhere around the same monthly price.
I don't understand why you guys buy these phones from Verizon when you know the bootloader is locked. Why not just buy it from Google it's the same price
My company just let me have the bogo deal since they were buying another employee one. Otherwise i would have ordered from Google.
Throw me in there for 30$
I'd be happy with root, but I am debating about fixing my HTC 10 and returning this to Verizon (taking the $50 hit) and rebuying it from Google.
Throw me in there for $50
I'd personally take the hit. But for me a 1k phone is worth significantly less without root.
I wasn't hanging around XDA when I bought the 2XL so made the mistake going with Verizon. You guys in here now, ground zero, are being warned by others, even still making a bounty post already! It's like you see the wall you're about to run into and start planning for the ER visit instead of just moving out of the way.

Not to mention, Verizon had BOGO, for $800 off another Pixel 3 or XL. Plus Best buy had $100 GC per activated phone, so that's $1,000 in credits. Then Verizon has a promo for $200 mastercard GC per new line activation for military lines, so for me that was $1,200 in credits for 2 Pixel 3XLs. I'll take $1,200 in credits over Day 1 root anyday. It's just a phone, most important things can be done without root these days. Only worth while things that need root are for the true hardcore enthusiasts.
Anyone who says they're too good for $1,200 is truly crazy.
Plus some people are "stuck" with the Verizon model. I did purchase the unlocked from the Google Store but bought a 3. After using it for a few days, I just wasn't happy with the size (plus I wanted the bigger battery) so I wanted to get the XL. My return period with the 3 closes by the time the Google Store estimates I'd get an XL. So my only option was to buy the Verizon model from Best Buy. I hope I'll be able to unlock the bootloader somehow, but I guess it won't be the end of the world if I can't.
$50 for me
I dont think there will be an unlock for the VZW version unless its stumbled upon , not much interest for devs to work on it if you can just buy the unlocked version. so get the unlocked one unless absolutely necessary to get from VZW lol. I for one would have wanted the google unlocked version even more so now cause i think a lot of the sound and memory issues will be fixed much better through custom Kernels but i wound up having to get though Verizon for better deal still debating trying to get an unlocked version from google
No one found or was interested in finding root for the Pixel 2, and I would imagine that the 3 will be no different. I had the 2 XL from Verizon, and this time around I got the 3 XL from Google.

Yeah that seems like it will be the case with the 3 XL , i did fine with my Verizon 2xl so i thought i would be good with the Verizon 3 XL , but i have a feeling the few things that bother be about the 3 XL will require an unlocked device to fixed them with rom/kernel .... i should have been saving to get from google lol
I'll put down 100$ to see this happen. Just got a Verizon model today. I compile a few ROMs for various devices so if it gets done I'd love to work on this device. Quite frankly I feel safer to donate after I know work has been started.
I know some of you bought a Verizon model for certain reasons, but instead of pledging a bounty for something that may never come, why not sell your phone on Swappa and buy an unlocked model from either Swappa or Google? What's it going to cost? Maybe $200 at the most, but probably not that much. It's not much more than what you're willing to donate, and you'll have an unlocked model much sooner.
Probably not the right place to post this, but my wife and I got VZW Pixel 3's in the mail today. I'm guessing one is an RMA, not sure, but her bootloader is unlocked out of the box.
I'm at work right now, but the phone is at home. Any useful information I can pull off of it?

I am not a dev but have been around here for a bit. Send us a pic of the bootloader screen, blur the important info like the imei and whatnot. From what I read in the P3 area is that the VZW bootloader can be unlocked if you don't put the VZW sim in first, complete the Google Setup, and then connect it to wifi, you can then unlock the bootloader.
I will be trying this tomorrow. and since they cannot turn a phone on without your permission first I think I'll be able to do this. Shoot, I'll even research to see if the bootloader can be reset for those of you (and possibly me included, I'll find out tomorrow).
The great thing about technology is there is ALWAYS a workaround, you may just have to find it.

Any cons to order directly from OP vs TMobile store?

hello all,
are there any cons of direct order from OP vs buy from TMobile store for USA TMobile use?
I don't want to wait for phone and bootloader unlock from TMO, in the store I was told it takes 40 days even paid in full
now I see 3 options:
1. buy from TMO online https://www.t-mobile.com/cell-phone/...u=610214660633 $699 + s/h $6.99 + tax $64.75 = $771.73 - better support and return, TMO branded, locked, RCS
2. buy from TMO shop I think the same less s/h about $764.74 - better support and return, TMO branded, locked, RCS
3. buy from OP direct www.oneplus.com $699.00 (15 days return) - global / international with 2 sims, unlocked, no RCS (might be ported later)
ordered from OP direct on July 6th, ETA 11th
thanks
I got mine directly from OP and so far the only drawback is that your phone will not support RCS messaging.

There is a thread where you can request yours unlocked, and then you can unlock and everything. One advantage of getting through T-Mobile is financing and warranty support. I've heard OnePlus support isn't the best, T-Mobile has good support. I have a T-Mobile one that I have converted to international and works great.
Unlocked direct from op
Ordering online via Tmo customer support offers you more flexibility in terms of returns. You get longer buyer's remorse. Tmo stores have much less capabilities compared to online customer support. Also, if you need something a bit complex for support on your account, I highly recommend you hit them up via their Twitter support. I've gotten a lot more done via there than by calling or dealing with a store.
thanks all for the reply

which one to go?

The pros/cons have been well described. Make your own decision like a grownup!
To me, even at the same price, I can't be bothered with things like SIM unlock and converting it to be unbranded. A lower price (as you've layed out) makes it a no brainer. For me, the unlocked US version was the best choice.
For others, they may like the peace of mind of better warranty service (as another described). For that person, the T-Mob version was the best choice.
Only you can decide which is the best choice for you.

Don't buy from T-Mobile.
In your comparison, you didn't mention that the T-Mobile version only supports a single SIM.
Just get it from OnePLus is you can afford it.

I was going to mention that there is no sales tax when buying directly from Oneplus, but you beat me to it.
I'll never buy a carrier branded phone again.
I'm considering a similar issue. I've been searching and haven't found answers to a few questions I have:
1) Does the Global/International/US unlocked version support T-Mobile's band 71?
2) Does the Global/International/US unlocked version support carrier aggregation (LTE-A/4G+) on T-Mobile's network?
I apologize if this has been answered in the OP7 Pro forums, but I haven't been able to find them. I will say that I hate buying from T-Mobile because they don't fully support the phones that they sell.
Thanks in advance

The us version sold directly from OnePlus has the same bands as the one sold by T-Mobile. I'm not sure about the carrier aggregation. I would guess it works the same as the T-Mobile version.

Are you getting carrier aggregation (LTE-A/4G+)?
I ordered from OnePlus USA directly on July 6th, expecting to get on 11th
now I need to learn and plan about:
1. root and unlock bootloader
2. twrp or etc for the recovery
3. magisk or etc to 'root cloak' to run apps that req none root (safety net pass)
I'd appreciate any links to read to speed up the process
OnePlus USA has just 15 days of return, so I need to check and test new phone under 10 days
thanks
