Inaccurate touchscreen? - LG V20 Guides, News, & Discussion

My phone just seems... Off. Anyone else noticing an inaccurate touch screen, charging or not? Typing has gotten horrible, keyboard doesn't matter, reboot doesn't help. Really starting to drive me nuts.
Sent from my LG-H918 using Tapatalk

Do you have a screen protector on it? Or are you charging and using the phone at the same time?

No screen protector and charging or not doesn't matter.
Sent from my LG-H918 using Tapatalk

That used to happen now and then on my old note 4. But it was due to my phone processing something. Try rebooting or clearing cache

i tend to see some inaccurate typing when i type fast. i used to blame the devices, my Nexus 6, the Note 7 also did this, and now the v20. I am beginning to think it may be "FAT Fingers" and trying to type way to fast, for me anyway. with the trouble you had with text messaging, perhaps you got a lemon and need to get it replaced.

Is there a touch test in service menu?

Not the Screen tester needed...
The app you listed doesn't do anything for telling you what's going on with your screen. It only registers a touch, swipe or writing on the screen...
TouchScreen Repair (Play Store/ NOOB, I can't post links) "claims" to help with response time, but after rebooting I still have issues with the 2nd screen registering as a long press and going into settings mode with the Wi-Fi quick tapped...
Running VZW (VS995) Software version VS99513A ("13A") and had the same issue with my first V20 running ("11A" and "12A").
2nd V20 has displayed the same symptoms with all (3) software updates 11A,12A, & 13A...

Agree that this might be common, but do think that the V20 screen is over sensitive and have never had any of the Note 3, 7 or for that matter S3 have this issue. Yes you'll get a typo, but not go crazy spending longer than necessary fixing them... Also the only time the V20 is 100% accurate is when you swipe REALLY slow... The whole idea of swiping is to text fast and not be handicapped...

Sony SmartWatch Impressions?

Has anyone bought the "updated" smart watch? If so, what are your thoughts on it? I might buy one from Expansys USA.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA
Early reviews online and on amazon are pretty positive. I purchased and returned the liveview due to connection issues. These seem to be a non-issue on the updated smartwatch. I ordered through expansys and will hopefully be receiving the unit this week. I can reply with my personal opinions.
I hope the xda devs pick this device up and come up with some great apps. One obvious one would be a timer/stopwatch app.
I just got it today, so my impressions are sort of limited to my limited use of it today...
I'd say overall impressions are "So far so good". Definitely feel this is a worthwhile device that will only improve with time.
Pros:
1. Much smaller than the MotoACTV and actually feels/looks like a normal wrist watch on your hand.
2. A much needed accelerometer screen activation was added I believe in the latest update (it doesn't mention this feature in the manual nor in any review I have seen). Basically all you do when the screen is off is tap the device anywhere twice really quick. I've noticed sometimes if you tap it too slow or not hard enough and then do it the right way immediately afterwards, that it won't register the correct way and you have to wait like 5 seconds to try again. Not that big of a deal.
3. Screen looks pretty good. A little pixelated due to the low resolution but text is still readable.
4. So far no problems losing sync with the phone.
Cons:
1. Smartwatch app notification icon ALWAYS stays on in the notification bar of your phone when the watch is connected. Needs to be an option to disable this.
2. The touch screen malfunctions with at least one default Sony app that I've seen so far: the Phonebook (Contacts) app. I think this must be something with how Sony designed the app, as other apps I've downloaded function perfectly normal with all the gestures (multitouch, swiping, taps). IT'S HORRIBLE. Can't swipe between screens at all with this. Actually accidentally texted someone on the first screen of contacts the default "Call me" message as I was swiping to the second screen of contacts. The text went through though, so I guess that's a plus because the person called me immediately lol.
3. The charging cable and the way it just fits in the clip to stay connected is probably the worst charging design I have ever seen... should have just used micro-usb... If you aren't careful when setting the watch down while it's plugged in, you could accidentally put an angle on the cable which will ensure that it doesn't make contact with the charging leads.
4. No default email app yet. Only one that exists is for Sony phones
5. Music player could be improved a bit. No control over albums/folders (at least with the Google Play Music app). Very generic play/pause, volume, and next/previous track options. Doesn't show album art with Play Music on ICS (really? This is the default app that probably the majority of Android users use!!).
6. Sometimes if the phone is busy doing other things, you will notice on the watch that the icons take a while to show up (generic icons are shown instead of the specific application ones), which basically is exposing the fact that the apps aren't stored on the Smartwatch itself... which means that if your phones processor is bogged down, so will app responsiveness on the watch itself.
7. No voice search app or widget! Whether we have the phone sitting in our car in speaker phone mode, or have a blue tooth headset on, we need a dedicated voice search activation button widget! I am planning on sitting down one day to make one. This will be especially handy once we have the Google Assistant app (Siri competitor), not to mention how useful this would be to initiate calls to people while driving instead of using the HORRIBLE touch screen contacts app.
8. No microphone in the hardware! This sort of goes with #7 above.
Just got this thing in the mail here at work, well FedEx. Haven't really messed around with it yet. Loaded a few apps, so far so good! Will report back later on anything else I find.
yeh i just got mine today
still fiddling around with it
i look forward to updates
i also noticed the messaging app doesnt sync up constantly
like in the events app,i can get a new message notice and read it,but go back to the messaging app,and it shows older texts....
and theres some other minor quirks, like when the phone rings you can mute it, hang up, but not answer it
would be cool if there was a microphone and i could carry on conversations like im james bond
Dude wait for the pebble: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/597507018/pebble-e-paper-watch-for-iphone-and-android
I just hooked mine up today and had all kinds of problems keeping it connected. I am running a Galaxy Tab with the newly released CM-9 nightly. The apps I have tried work: in call control, missed call, audio control, message, and weather. The problem I have with the set up is that it keeps disconnecting as soon as you try and do anything. Originally it wouldn't re-connect reliably, I then found the Liveviewcharm application which allows it to reconnect all the time. So far, I would give it a C+ in my particular configuration but I am hoping.
YMMV, it seems people with other configurations are having less problems. It would be a good idea if people siad what kind of phone and what software they were running.
By the way, the reason the software leaves an icon in the status bar is so that the background app won't get shut down by the OS when it needs memory.

what exactly is liveviewcharm? i find it on the net to download, but absolutely no description of what it is or what it does
Im using Samsung galaxy note with the watch. Stays connected fine unless im a ways away from the phone of course
Been very eager to get the original liveview, but heard about the various connection problems. Now this one seems to have that fixed Normally, I would have got this right away, but the pebble is quite interesting too. So since some of you have the smartwatch could you answer some of my questions please?
* Most importantly, how does this affect battery life? I pretty much destroy my battery in a matter of hours, I don't want this to turn my phone into a laptop where I'd need to charge it every 2-3 hours
* When the bluetooth connection drops, what happens? I know the smartwatch doesn't need the phone for clock functionality (unlike the liveview). So does it just show the time?
* I'm not good with coding and stuff, the smartwatch would be the better option for support right?
Thanks

I can't really comment on battery life as I am using a tab which has a battery that lasts 24 hours no matter how I use it. Having said that as I far as I can tell there is no difference. I suspect on a phone with a smaller battery your results won't be as good.
The watch tries to reconnect automatically when the connection drops. The Liveviewcharm (clicky) app makes the reconnections much more reliable. The description is in Japanese, you will have to cut and paste the text into Google translate if you can't read it (I couldn't). Basically it is an app that stays running and monitors Liveview connections (which the SmartWatch uses). I can't be any more detailed than that.
I doubt that Sony support will be terrific but there is nothing to code. It mostly just works the way the instructions say. You do have to download each app you want to run on the watch but that is straightforward.

See my post above for a brief description of liveviewcharm, it does help. Good to hear the watch works well with a Note. Maybe subsequent releases of the CM-9 ROM will clean up whatever is wrong with the communications with watch.
One other thing, it is very hard to read in sunlight, one reason the Pebble could be better (when and if it is released).
In any event, I like the idea so much I signed up for a Pebble and may even buy a WIMM to give that a try. The problem for me is that I use the Tab as my only device and sometimes it is very cumbersome just to get out and see who is calling, etc.

You mean that the watch wakes when you shake it?
That's actually a feature I was hoping to see. I used to have a watch that would turn the light on when I flicked my wrist This would be a nice feature, since you won't need to have another hand to activate it.
So @owners of this watch, is that a feature of the watch?

I don't like the look of the Sony smart watch, Pebble actually looks cool to wear and in the video on the website is an actual demo unit so it will happen and rock. Plus, they have nearly 6 million backers already, do you know what that is? Lol the development on that thing will be so strong and so good.

Urgent. Touchscreeen off

I am on vacation in the usa and bought a note 10.1 at best buy in san diego. Now i am in los angeles.
Today i played a little with it and found that the touchscreen does not respond as expected depending on where I touch the screen. (Fingers not pen!)
In the middle it is spot on, but above and below the registered touch position is way below where i actually touched the sceen. Especially when more than one link is at these positions i always miss the one i want to click... also when typing a text sometimes i hit 'c' but space is registered. Additionally i tested with multitouch visualizer from the market and clearly see what i described.
I also own a galaxy tab10.1 and never had this problem., so i guess i am not dreaming this.
0. I guess there is no way to calibrate the screen?
1. Can you use multitouch visualizer and test if your device shows also this behaviohr, please? Want to now if it is normal or if my device is broken...
2. In two days i fly back to germany. Should i return it? Never returned something at best buy. Is it problematic? Do i have to explain much or jisit easy going? Should i say that it is broken or just return it?
Thank you very much!
Klaus
Ps: you can also use the developer menu and turn on visualization of touch stuff. Here i see also that in upper and lower part of the screen the registered position is off .
Don't take a chance. Return it 1st thing in the morning. All you need is your receipt and explain the problem. Get a manager if you need to.

I think i will return it for a refund if possible. Because i fly back on saturday i do not have enough time to test it (i also want to do a little sight seeing here ).
Forget the BS that I wrote. The problem was because i was charging at the same time. After unplugging the note and using multitouch visualizer again the problem was gone. Stupid me. Sorry for polluting the forum with my crap
I have noticed an intermittent indication of the same thing especially when playing Monopoly. Sometimes I also see an intermittent delay when touching the screen today in SNotes I saw at least a second delay from when I started a line and the line showed, but it is very intermittent.

Touchscreen is unresponsive

I already sent my phone to Samsung to repair it under warranty, but I just wanted to see if any one else experienced this problem with Blaze 4G.
Basically, the problem first appeared rarely but progressed within several days to the point that the phone's touchscreen is unresponsive most of the time. It is not present constantly, and that confuses me. It also does not depend on what ROM I am using at the moment, so I guess it must be a hardware problem. The touchscreen can work for 30 minutes to several hours and then become unresponsive for half-day or so. Removing battery or rebooting the phone does not have any effect on this occurence - it still is unresponsive at random.

Haven't heard any issues similar to yours. You probally had a lose connection or worse, but as far as I know the only bug across the boards was the issue not hearing when making/receiving a phone call. From what I seen and others mentioned is the audio bug only occurred on custom ROMs not stock.

Where do you live? Maybe its from moisture. I've heard others (not blaze users) report that there phone became unresponsive due to overactive moisture sensors. They go crazy over in the middle east and places with high temps or humidity.

I live in Bay Area (South Bay). The humidity is quite low, actually. The phone has never been placed in a moist or humid environment. This problem appeared out of the blue. It was not a ROM issue for sure, as it appeared in stock GB, stock ICS and AOKP JB. Heck, the screen was unresponsive even in TWRP

Well, they updated the status as fixed and shipped. They put the cause as "touchpad failure" and the solution - S/W update. I am kind of sceptical of this repair, but tomorrow I shall see for myself.

Yes, that is what they did apparently. I got phone today with a stock ICS (it had GB when I sent it to them), and it still has the same problem It seems that people who are responsible for repair have no clue about what they are supposed to do.
I will send it again and in the meanwhile, I will get a T-mo Galaxy SII from Walmart. If Blaze gets fixed - great, if not, I will end up with a slightly more performing phone for $300.
Almost a month later, I received my phone second time from Samsung repair department. Well, this time they actually listened to me and replaced the touchscreen. Now, the phone works fine.
In this past month I have tried:
1) T-Mobile Prism (Huawei)
2) T-Mobile Exhibit 4G (Samsung)
3) Family Mobile Galaxy S II (same as T-Mobile but without a SIM card included)
4) T-Mobile Optimus L9 (LG)
I had high hopes for S II and even considered keeping it, but it turned out to be a very mediocre phone (even though it was still better than the AT&T version). Too large and, as a result, uncomfortable; in addition, the GPS was extremely slow to respond and almost any unofficial version of 4.1.2 resulted in an extremely bad sound quality. Noticeably larger screen still had the same resolution as the Blaze 4G.
The most acceptable phone was perhaps LG Optimus L9 - it was thin and lightweight, had high resolution (960x540), good reception and responsive GPS. The only disadvantage was not having NFC. I used it stock and unrooted for the entire 2 weeks, so I do not know how it would function with 4.1.2. If somebody wants a well-functioning smartphone for only $200, I would highly recommend it.
If my Blaze 4G breaks down again, it will probably not have warranty (until March 2013),so my next device would most likely be Nexus 4.

Really need help with T-Mobile LG G5 gps problems.

So I have stock unlocked and rooted Tmobile LG G5 and my GPS is ridiculously way off unless I'm using and connected to wifi (which really makes it useless).
I thought it was a hardware issue since it takes anywhere from 5 minutes to an HOUR to get a solid lock. Tried other apps to find location, Google maps is my main, snapchat can't find a lock Facebook, waze. The list goes on. I'll have full 4g LTE signal with a perfect connection. Even at my home on the 3rd story of my house, the GPS put me a few miles away literally in the middle of the river. It's astonishingly bad how terrible the "lock" is. When it is locked and I'm driving, it'll say "searching using gps" for 5 minutes at a time before briefly finding a lock and showing me sliding through people's yards a block away.
Now I thought this was a hardware issue.
But.
Here's the kicker.
Using the hidden lg g5 dialer menu to open to gnss 2.0? Gps testing option finds a lock as quickly as 3 seconds and the GPS lock will last as long as gps is activated on the phone.
So if I restart my phone or get tired of the minute battery drain I have to open the menu, run the test, and go through the same song and dance.
Now if the hardware is able to find a lock so quickly and easily, it leads me to believe that turning gps on in the settings doesn't actually turn the GPS on? Like the directive isn't reaching the hardware? I really need some help with this if someone wouldn't mind.. I just can't seem to figure this one out.
I've been watching to see of anyone with this problem has updated to 10d to see if it was corrected in the update.
Also hoping it is software and not hardware. I really don't want to exchange for a refurbished phone and still have the issue.
If it is software though I'm wondering why there isn't more chatter about it on the forums.
Sent from my LG-H830 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I'm right there with you on not wanting to have to exchange. Especially since rooting was a pain for me. But if the hardware works when I'm using the test software it has to be software problem imo. I wish someone could help with this.
I had the same issues with GPS, troubleshooted a couple things on the phone with customer service and they finally issued a replacement after 3 attempts to fix over the phone. The new one locks on instantly when navigating and stays on the entire time. My other one would always say searching for GPS

My last phone was an S3. I started losing GPS and it was bad, took forever to connect and would lose connection while navigating. I looked for a fix and was about to replace the phone when I found a thread where the poster had simply removed the battery cover and tightened all the screws. I did that and my GPS became spot on. Faster connections than when the phone was new, pretty much instantaneous, and was even connecting inside where it previouly would not. I also had an unuseable USB connector and after that fix I could charge again.
With my G5 I have been constantly having momentary Bluetooth drops in my car and lately the GPS is getting very flaky (takes a long time to connect and loses connection often while navigating). I have not yet attempted to open the phone to get to the board screws (not so easy on a sealed phone) but it is either that or replace the phone. I am just afraid that if I open the phone I will void the warranty.
Got the pinch test to work, so I guess it is a hardware problem getting weak signal from a bad connection. Tmobile says they'll replace it on warranty. Hopefully new one works fine and can be rooted as well. Really need titanium backup. Thanks for the replies, glad to know I'm not the only one dissatisfied.
The pinch test, by the way, is grabbing your phone slightly above the volume up button and directly across and squeezing. That makes my GPS lock instantly. While letting go loses the lock instantly.
Had the same issue after I flashed the maps from OpenGapps
The last update that I received yesterday fixed my GPS woes. Locks on in 5 seconds now.
i manually installed 10d kdz (never rooted) via lgup hoping it would fix my gps problems but i'm having no luck. it's annoying as **** because it's messing up my pokemon go experience as well as making me miss exits when navigating via google maps. having to read the map off the phone is incredibly dangerous. t-mobile better not be charging a fee for warranty service, this needs to be a damn recall from LG
The tech I spoke to after calling 611 was awesome.
Supposed to pick my new phone up in the morning. Total fee for replacement was $5. Apparently the 2 guys in store and the tech himself had not heard of this problem. Hopefully this phone seriously was just a dud. I'll report back tomorrow if my phone actually gets here. Its been screwing up my GO experience as well. Hahaha

Did you root the new working phone? And does the GPS still work while rooted? I've seen a lot of people complaining that their GPS broke only after rooting. So I've been curious... Would hate to get a replacement and then break it again with a root, ya know?
It's rooted and it works. I thought that too in the beginning cause I had the phone for a while before root became available and it worked

That doesn't make my gps lock, but I DO have awful GPS... So I'm not alone. That's good news! Also, glad to hear this is something TMo will run a replacement for. So dumb that phones have been coming out with perfect gps for a bajillion years and we still get borked devices sometimes... Hopefully my replacement has the old 10a version on it.

So dumb that phones have been coming out with perfect gps for a bajillion years and we still get borked devices sometimes... Hopefully my replacement has the old 10a version on it.

In hoping to Odin that it comes with the 10a. I'll report after I pick it up.
More than likely it will have 10a. I had my s6 edge replaced before and it came with 5.0.2 on it and had to upgrade the software like 3 times to get it current.

Please please please please please...
I've been having the same exact issues... Absolutely no GPS connection inside buildings/my house etc. AND innacurate Google Maps positioning/losing connection every 30-45 seconds. It is driving me insane... I just don't want to go through the hassle of un-rooting to return it...

Hassle? You've got LGUP installed, so just DL a kdz/tot and flash it before you toss it in the box. Don't forget fastboot oem lock!
New phone came with 10a! Apparently the factory stock is 10a. Rooted and all is working. All of my sensors are better now, gps is spot on, locks in 3 seconds or less. Pedometer is actually accurate for once. And the signal all together (wifi and cellular) are better. I guess my old phone just slipped through quality control, haha.
I hope all you guys dealing with this same problem either get it fixed or replaced like I did. =( it's a shame that a "flagship" would have these kinds of issues.

Display & Touchscreen Issues

I've owned an unlocked U11 (US) since launch day, and it's been performing flawlessly until these party couple of weeks.
I started to notice that on occasion, visible scan lines would appear on the display.
As well, touch response would suddenly drop or get really jittery. This causes a lot keyboard typos (i swipe) and accidental instagram likes (due to the jitters!).
The two issues do not always happen at the same time.
I ran that line drawing diagnostic test, and it does appear to fail every so often.
I've babied this phone since day one, so it's really frustrating that this is happening.
I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same issues. Could it be software-related?

Yes. I believe HTC needs to do a update.

Yes, you are getting the same problems? Or yes, it's software?
I also noticed this behavior. In earlier Firmwares I had this way more often than in the actual one, but this scanlines appear from time to time. Seldom but they appear. Contacted HTC already, they believe in an software issue. Let's look what the time brings.
I think you can force them if device sleeps and you cover the screen completely with your hand. If the device wakes up the scanlines are noticeable.
the scanline thing happens with all of them, its not a bug specific to your device, sadly its so hard to pint point and report

No it doesn't happen to all of them, I've never seen this issue once. The scanlines anyway. The touch screen is overly sensitive so if I don't move my thumbs away as I type, it acts like I'm still on it. It's not in glove mode either, that would probably be unusable.
Looks like I'm not the only one with touch screen problems:

Guys can you do the screen line test and see if hitting two sides of the screen in succession as if you're typing a message joins up and draws a straight line?

It does. Totally repeatable when the taps are super close to being at the same time.
Turns out it's normal - my brothers one plus 3 does the same.
I cleared my cache partition and went back to using the original HTC keyboard to see if it helps. It does seem a bit more behaved at the moment.

Well its definitely doing it with SwiftKey. I've been getting really aggravated because it will delete words as I type, close the keyboard occasionally... SwiftKey has a gesture to delete words and sentences and guess what that gesture is? A line on the screen.
Hmm, I get what you're saying. But my brothers One Plus 3 behaves exactly in the same manner but doesn't have the weird jitters.
I'm thinking it's an Android thing to join the two touches on a software level, however if the digitiser is recording a straight line touch end to end that's a different matter.
Here's another idea, enable the pointer location in the Dev settings and see if you get a straight line with that when touching in succession - I don't, and hence that's led me to think joining the two touches on a software level is intended.

Its not intentional, they will undoubtedly fix it at some point. They had to fix it on the Evo 4G too but it was not as bad as this...
Just updated to 1.27. Previously in 1.13, tested tapping using sketch app, there were 4 horizontal lines produced during 50+ taps. Now it's 0.
6hours in, I feel typing is better now.
I remember the same thing when HTC 10 was released and I had the same issue with over sensitive screen. After couple of initial updates everything was fixed so like someone already noticed with 1.27 base HTC is refining this speed deamon and they already addressed this problem
That's very interesting. I wonder why my brother's one plus 3 behaves in the same way, but doesn't cause any adverse effects...ah well there's hope. Thanks for the update.

HTC phones aren't the only ones with this problem. I have had different manufacturers that had the same problem.

Swiftkey is amazing because of those 2 gestures but I've had lots of problems with them on the U11, especially when the keyboard is closed and I end up pressing random buttons that were behind the keyboad. It's a really bad and dangerous issue. The only fix before 1.27 is to just disable the gestures.

Is the typing still OK? And can anyone else on 1.27 confirm if the fix is good? Thanks

Used to make ghost swipes here and there when using SwiftKey. Now it's not happening anymore. Not even once since 1.27
