Flash RUU with SD card method - HTC One A9

Hi all, I am not sure if any of you is useing this method to RUU back your device but if you dont want to mess with fastboot and so on there is actually a very easy way to do it. the ony thing you need is RUU and sdcard.
1. rename RUU to 2PQ9IMG.zip
2. copy zip in the root of your sd card. - external card / not internal - it will not work
3. reboot to download mode, if for some reason you cant/are not able to/, reboot to bootloader and then select download mode
4. your device will pick up the zip file and flash it.
5.follow on screen instructions and enjoy your RUU-ed htc one a9
This method of flashing ruu is not new, it has been around for a while, just the name of the zip is always different.
I learned this when i had htc one S and htc one m8.

Will it work with S-off too ? I have sprint variant and want to get back to stock and receive OTAs

Yes, works with S-Off!
With S-off you can install any RUU by setting up the correct SID/MID before flashing the RUU.

and how we are supposed to do that ? well I got this phone in used condition.. its sprint and im using it outside US.. so it is network unlocked and twrp installed .. I'm an old htc user but not new to flashing and rooting .. never tried to s-off any of my devices before.. so I was wondering what more is needed to flash ruu to get back stock when I'm S-off

If you just want to get back to the stock system the Phone came with, theres nothing more to do then flashing the correct RUU.
Only if you want to change from sprint to for example Europe version, you have to setup the correct SID/MID before flashing and for this you need to be S-Off

Probably self-evident, but where do I download the RUU.zip?

OS and Radio needed

I accidently deleted the OS and gave my phone for repairing as I am not used to flashing and rooting stuff.
but after that I am not able to use my cellphone on data connections, mobile data disconnected error .
Can you please send me the radio version and OS version details so I can install the same to use my cellphone. Mine is also Sprint A9. Also any further help will be highly appreciated.

Tominozh, thanks for your post. I'm having some troubles with my HTC One a9 and would like to reinstall the official ROM.
My questions:
a) The RUU provided by HTC is a file with exe extension. Do I have to convert to zip and then rename it?
b) When I "Reboot to Bootloader" (Download Mode doesn't work) and select "Boot Download Mode", HTC only says "SD Mounted" and goes back to the previous menu. My device didn't pick up the file

To my understanding, the RUU exe file you downloaded is a tool to download the actual firmware onto the device and is not a zip that can be flashed in a straightforward manner.
Check https://forum.xda-developers.com/one-a9/general/wip-ruu-htc-one-a9-t3240344 for flashable RUU zips

i used the method of ruu via memory card but got an error like the picture, the device is now out of the boot loop logo, how to fix that problem, seems to have reported a sensor error

3.12 will do both GB and ICS but it isn't a native GB F/W release.
i) I'm assuming you have a Nandroid backup of the original ROM ?
ii) Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459767 and get the 1.17 Firmware.
iii) Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178143 and get the 10.58 Radio
iv) restore the nandroid backup.
If no nandroid backup, then I'm sure others can oint you in the direction of the right RUU. Be careful installing RUUs as they potentially update too much.
You can either flash the gb firmware or simply run the latest RUU that you would like to have.
Keep in mind that you will lose your custom recovery.

the thing is, I want S-ON, should have mentioned that. Somebody told me to flash an old RUU, then upgrade manually & S-ON then?

Eek, never considered trying for S-ON. S-OFF is the main battle.
Can I ask why S-ON ? I struggle to see a need for it apart from returns.

BE WARNED though, I've seen many posts where folks mess it up == Brick. There might be a better post but as I said never tried.
yes, I've already seen that, but there's also an howto in my native language, so I won't mess it up, the question just is, if it makes a difference, that I've got ICS?

can you please help me with step 1) & 2)
so I put the gb rom, the radio & the firmware on my sd.
then flash firmware, then radio, then superwipe & finally rom?
i think first thing is firmware, then super wipe in recovery mode, then rom and after long boot radio..
i do radio flashing with fastboot. connect phone with usb in terminal:
adb reboot bootloader
if you are in bootloader then in terminal:
fastboot flash radio radio.img
you must change radio.img with your radio name and i asume that you have ADB and FASTBOOT, you can get this from android dev..its named android sdk

Actually both radio and firmware have the same file name (the name is PG58IMG.zip) ıf you change the name of one of the files, fastboot will not detect the file. SO ; you have to put the firmware and rom into root of your sd card FIRST. When flashed the firmware, power off the device and just unplug your sdcard. Then boot into bootloader again (volume down+power when the device is off) As the device cannot recognize an sd card this way, it will not try to upgrade the firmware automatically. Then when the device is turned on into the bootloader give it 5-10 seconds and plug your card. Then go to recovery menu. And choose mount usb storage when the device is connected to pc. Delete PG58IMG file (firmware) Then superwipe and flash your rom. Then put your radio file which has the same file name with the firmware into root of sd card. Boot into bootloader and upgrade it. That's all!
If you are confused about unpluging sd card, then plugging again while in the bootloader menu, that is just to deceive the bootloader as i told before. If bootloader finds PG58IMG file in the sd card you will not be able to get into recovery menu. Alternatively, and easier method is to delete the firmware file after flashing it by using an external card reader instead of getting into recovery and mounting sd card via phone.

Sensation 4G Boot Problems

I was attempting to root my phone and I believe my system files are now deleted or corrupted (This is my best guess from what I have read online) as my phone will not get past the boot screen which is the white background with the "htc" logo. I am able to hit the down volume button with the power button to see the screen where you see the following:
-Revoluntionary-
PYRAMID PVT SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-1.17.1111
I have the PG58IMG.zip file on my SD Card and when in the above screen, it gives me the prompt "Do you want to start update?". I hit yes, it shows a successful update but when you reboot, it still refuses to boot the phone past the "htc" logo screen. I must admit that I did not do enough research before attempting this "Root" and I'm having difficultly understanding what to do next. If possible, I would like to get the phone back to factory setting. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

#1 - do you have a custom recovery installed?
#2 - remove the PG58IMG.zip file from your SD card or you will never be able to get past the bootloader.
#3 - if you REALLY want to go back to factory, you will need to install an official HTC RUU.
Thanks for the response JWhipple. Here are your answers:
1: Custom Recovery is installed, I've tried 2 different ones, still refuses to boot.
2: I have removed the zip file from the SD Card, still refuses to boot.
3: I haven't tried the HTC RUU yet because I still can't get the phone to boot.
If you boot the phone into bootloader mode you should be able to run the RUU. Someone please correct me if I am wrong!

Do a full wipe from recovery.....including the /system and /boot. Then reflash your ROM. Also, ensure your using the correct firmware for the ROM your using.

I have a similar problem, except that my update failed!! Can I just delete the firmware file and the phone will get back to normal????
The easiest way to solve your issue, providing you DO have a custom recovery e.g. 4EXT or Clockwork, would be to go to the Sensation Android Development sub-forum, find an appropriate ROM, and then flash it through recovery. There are many tutorials online explaining this. Alternatively you could search for "Sensation 4g RUU" which is basically the official program for PC which restores the stock firmware of the device. You do need to get the correct one for the 4G Sensation or you could experience some issues.

Hey tragik74, when you say "run RUU", how exactly do you run it? The only method I see for running anything is to make a PG58IMG.zip file and install that on a SD Card. Which I'm a having an issue with since now my phone shows locked but still has S-OFF.

[Q] HTC sensation bootscreen loop

Hi there. I've read some advices for similar problem, but i couldnt find any solution to this.
My girlfriend tried to flash her rom in Sens and i think she made it bad
I know, that she unlocked her bootloader (1.27) with htc dev page. She flashed touch CWM as a recovery.img and she used partitioning function on her SD card by CWM. It earased her backups etc (yea, cool , isnt it ? ). Form this moment she couldnt mount usb storage and connect phone to the pc in CWM mode. She rebooted system and copied OrDRoid and Sharpy ROM's to the SD. Rebooted to recovery, and she... did full wipe and dalvik cache wipe. Flashed with Sharpy ROM and now... it's the best moment
She forgot to flash the radio, and she didn't read any of instructions in the topic of rom. She just did it like I do it in my desire
So, the question is, how to bring it all alive ? Now there's unending bootscreen loop and i rly donno what to do... I hope u guys will help me with this coz she's now shou ting etc all the time

If bootloader is still accessible, i would recommend the following steps
1- Get superCID (i would recommed but its not neccesary)
2- Flash the latest firmware 3.32.x.x (Put the PG851MG file on root of sd card)
3- delete the PG851MG file from sd card
4- do a full wipe and then flash the ROM. (which should be on the root of sd card)

Tell your girlfriend, I.e. yourself, to start the phone in boot loader, click on fast boot, plug in her (your) phone to the PC and run the proper ruu. And next time make sure your girlfriend (you) pays attention to what she's (you are) doing. Maybe she (you) shouldn't flash anymore phones.
man ... the computer won't see my phone in fastboot if it doesnt work in usb storage mode in cwm so i can't use RUU. this is the reason why i'm here writing these posts
maybe u're schizophrenic and you can mistake hand with another person, whatever, i'm not you .
I didn't have problems with flashing any of MY phones but i can't (yes u're right, i can't) fix up someone's mistakes if i don't know the phone ;]
I think when its plugged into the computer in fastboot mode the computer should install the drivers automatically. Mine did.

Who's a schizophrenic?
Another possible problem might be that you don't have the appropriate firmware.
Do you have 3.32.x.x firmware? If not, follow this, Use 3rd method:
Step 1. Flashing 4EXT recovery touch
To dowload and install the newest version of 4ext recovery TOUCH (v1.0.0.5 RC3). Use one of the following methods provided:
Third method: Download this file, check the MD5 of the zip and install it following the steps 4 and 5 from post#1 in this thread.
NOTE: File used in third method WILL NOT install the needed 3.32 firmware in any way, only contains the recovery.img to flash 4ext recovery touch.
Updating the firmware
This step is MANDATORY otherwise your ROM will not boot.
After updating the firmware you will have the 3.32 firmware with unlocked bootloader. Which basically means that you can use advanced fastboot commands, such as: flash new radios and splashscreens
Download compatible firmware from here.
Copy the PG58IMG.zip file you've downloaded to the root of the sdcard. Root of the sd card mean that you can't put the file inside any folder. Also, you can't rename the file. Please keep the PG58IMG otherwise the bootloader won't recognize it.
Power off your phone or remove the batt and put it back again.
Hold volume-down + power button to boot into the bootloader
Wait for the firmware package to be found and confirm to update as prompted
Once it completed successfully and prompted you to reboot, pull the battery out.
Connect your SD card to the PC and remove the PG58IMG.zip file.

yea we have another problem
it's completely disharged and when i try to connect and charge it only blinks the orange light ; o
Well princess, you're **** outta luck.
Do you have any other way of charging it?
Try plugging in the charger elsewhere. Remove & re-insert the battery.
Also, I have edited the previous post with steps for you to follow since you can't use adb or fastboot. Please read through that and follow it.
k. not bad. i''ve got fully chargd battery and 4-ext recovery touch. firmware 3.32.

That is due to corrupted sdcard. Anyway, you can unlock the bootloader, flash a custom recovery and root without the Hack Kit (take into consideration that is has been discontinued as so has the files and support) Check my signature for doubts

OK, I try to unlock bootloader now. But I got stuck to this (same problem with other guy in this forum, but no lead):
My ROM Software Numbre is 3.13.707.4, and the RUU tool (PD9810000_Ace_Sense30_S_hboot_2.00.0029.exe) displayed the same number. The option I was given was "Update the current ROM version." So I clicked update and it says "From Image Version 3.13.707.4 To Image Version 3.13.0.0". I clicked next to proceed. Then I get:
ERROR [190]: ROM IS NOT UPDATED
Your ROM version is not the latest version.
Please upgrade to 3.13.707.3 to apply this RUU to be able to unlock your bootloader. On your phone, go to Menu > Settings > About phone > Software updates > Check now. After you have updated, please run the RUU again to upgrade your HBOOT to unlock your phone. Click Exit to quit.
At this point I went back to the phone and performed the "check now", but there are no other updates.
I have google for this (ROM 3.34.707.3) but leads to nothing... no problem solving at all...
Stuck again now....
Updated :
Finally I can root my phone...
Problem described above, can be solved by update the Hboot version manually check this :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2252161
I can download update Hboot files from the link in there...
Then I continue with unlocking bootloader as describe in your signature (using easy unlock tools) then continue to flash CWM and SU using easy ace hack tools... Wow your tools is very easy to understand for a noob like me
Now, since i already have root access, it should be enough for me...
But just curious, how to gain S-Off access from here... I still not clear enough about S-off and S-On difference, what exactly advantages to have S-Off?
Please help me!
Hi Victasa:
Can you tell me how you solved this problem step by step?
I followed the link into your post, but I have a problem, I speak Spanish, and do not understand English well :crying:. Please can you tell me exactly how you did it?
Thank You

Hi Decasys, follow this step :
*Unlock boot loader with htcdev/bootloader
see your HBOOT version : you face problem describe on this thread if your hboot ver is 2.00.0027 you have to download file as below to achieve version 2.00.0029 because it support token key for unlock.
1. download this rom copy to your c:\ drive : http://www.mobfirmware.com/dl/behtash/imei dhd/rom.zip
2. then download : http://www.mobfirmware.com/dl/behtash/imei dhd/dhd update hboot by behtash.rar
3. run hboot update by behtash.bat in normal mode ,waiting until flash hboot complete
at this point your HBOOT will be upgrade to 2.00.0029 (check it)
*Then continue to use :
Easy unlock tools, follow insctrution in this therad : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2133336
at this point, on your bootloader, it will have "unlocked" notification on the top
*Then continue to use :
Easy Ace root tools, on this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2169515
When you run it, just choose to flash CWM (as I remember it was option #2)
And then continue to flash SU (as I remember it was option #3)
That's all, you gain root access.

Update again...
Seems the way I get the root access can't use to install custom ROM.
I try to install cyanogenmod as in this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2073992
But seems after do all the steps to install a custom rom there, my phone was stuck on HTC logo...
Fortunately, I have do nandroid backup, so I can restore to stock roms...
What i want to ask is, why my phone can't install custom ROM now? I know that I still has S-ON, but is that the cause? If yes, is there any possible way for me to get S-Off and install a custom ROM?
glevitan, i need your help again I think
Update again :
After checking on some place, apprantly i still left some steps
this one :
Flashing roms with an unlocked bootloader
Unlock your bootloader and flash a custom recovery (CWM or 4ext)
Download the rom zip file you are willing to flash to your PC.
Extract the the boot.img from inside the zip file (do not extract the whole rom)
Put the zip file in your sdcard.
Boot into recovery and do a full wipe (wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, format system)
Flash rom (install zip from sdcard)
Reboot into bootloader again and plug the phone to the PC.
You need to be in fastboot usb (if you see HBOOT USB PLUG in the phone, just press power to toggle)
Open a cmd/terminal and navigate to where the boot.img file is located.
Type: fastboot flash boot boot.img
Reboot and now you should be enjoying your custom rom
Finally I can enjoy my custom rom
Finally.
Finally.
I did it. I followed your instructions and I have root my phone.
I'm using the Custom ROM JellyTime and works perfectly.
Many Thanks for your help.
:good:

I'll pay someone to fix my mess. (S-OFF and ROM)

I'll paypal someone 5 bucks if they can remotely get me S-OFF and flash OpenSensatio2 on my phone. I've tried everything and it's just not working. I've been doing this for 5 hours, I can't do this anymore. I am "Unlocked" but have S-ON. I also forgot to make a backup so there is no rom on my phone. I can get into Recovery (CWM 5) and I can get to Fastboot USB screen. I'm on HBOOT 1.18.000
I don't know how this works but if someone knows how to do this remotely over the web, lemme know.
First, you need 4ext touch recovery. Here is the download: http://www.4ext.net/ddl/pyramid/recovery.zip
Firstly, download the file, and rename it to pg58img.zip
Place the file on the root of your SD Card, and boot into bootloader. It will then search for the file, and install the recovery.
When the process is done, you must remove the file from your sd card.
Then you have to flash the ics firmware, which is required in order to run an ICS ROM.
Download a 3.32 or up firmware for your cid from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459767
Place file on root of sd-card, boot into bootloader, wait until finished, and then remove the file.
Now, download OpenSensation, and gapps, and place on your sd card.
Boot into bootloader, select recovery.
Then, scroll down to tools, and then ''Enable 4ext smartflash''
Then go back, and head into the wipe|format menu.
Then select format all partitions (except sd card)
Then go back to main menu, and select install zip.
Then choose install zip from sd card, and select the opensensation zip.
When that is done, flash the gapps zip.
Reboot and enjoy!

Thanks for the advice, I have the exact same problem as the guy from above, I did what you said step by step, but I get stuck at the white htc screen at the beginning. I am HBOOT 1.29.0000
When I tried to root my device, I downloaded the bootloader from HTCDev.com

This works up until the welcome screen. I click "English (US)" and then it says "Just a sec..." and then freezes and reboots. You've gotten me farther than I've gotten. Any idea why we are hitting that reboot?

I have the drivers. I couldn't have debug on because there wasn't a rom on the phone. I'm looking for a GB rom now to test.

Hi,
You have used HTCdev,so you will not be able to use revolutionary.
Relock your phone.
You need to go right back to stock with a GB RUU .

I ended up flashing a GB rom just to try it out and make a backup. It worked.
Okay, so now-
1. Relock phone and then run the GB RUU exe
2. Turn debugging on
3. Attempt Revolutionary
In that order? Sorry if I have a bunch of questions. I've rooted a bunch of Galaxy's before and never ran into so many issues. I love the Sensation though.

Hi,
Ok.
If you have got a ROM installed, then, forget the RUU for now,but do relock the phone.
Turn debugging on
Then,try Revolutionary.
Thank you both for all of your help! I'm so happy just to have a rom on here, I thought it was dead. Haha. I'm going to try Rev again after dinner and I will update this post later today or tomorrow morning and let you know how I did.
I'm excited to be back on Android. I got rid of my iPhone. It was about time.
