XZ USB connectivity - Sony Xperia XZ Questions & Answers

Hi guys,
Does anybody know what would be the reason my XZ to connect normally to any USB devices except one?
I need to say that the "one" device that the XZ wont connect is also working normally with Z and Z1, but with XZ wont communicate. What happening is just to sound twice as something is connected through USB, but nothing more. It even doesn't charging as should be.
I have tried to plug in to the "one" USB with the XZ off and then it starts receive charging for a while - until the battery status showed and then it stops again.
I hope to find solution for this with your help.
Note, the USB debugging is ON
note 2, I have managed somehow to get working one time and it was working for the whole day, but on next day it was not working again without any changes or updates to be received.

Not sure but have you tried using the "Detect USB device" option under the notification panel?

Hi mate, yes, sure i have tried and the reply was USB connected, but no further, nothing more happens.

Same here with my Dji phantom controller.

Have you clicked on the USB notification and selected what you want in the dialog box?

I had a similar issue today after using adb. I restarted phone and deleted devices from PC. Reinstalled device and all was good. Panicked for a moment there.

Yup, tried every setting and every Dev mode option. Nothing works.

Not sure what "one" means but maybe faulty cable? or usb input.

[Q] USB works in fastboot but not ADB - not a driver issue

Anyone having an idea why my (only 3 months old) Nexus 5 no longer connects in ADB mode? Fastboot works, in Windows and Linux. But ADB does not. In Linux dmesg, I can't see the device connecting which was different yesterday: I could at least see the device connecting but then within a blink of a second disconnecting again. In Windows, I'd hear the usual USB connect sound but the device does not show up in the device manager.
Other issues I discovered yesterday:
* connecting the device after fully booted puts it into "permanent charging mode", read: the thunderbolt icon does not disappear. It says "charging (USB)" in the battery stats even when disconnected
* connecting the device while turned off, then booting, puts it into "permanent no-charging mode", read: the thunderbolt icon never appears, the battery does not charge
In both "modes" connecting to a wall charger changes nothing. A full reboot is needed. Then it works flawlessly with the wall charger unless I dare to use a PC for charging, that's when it returns into sticking with the thunderbolt icon. It will fully charge while in this state until I disconnect the device. Then I'm stuck with continuous discharging until rebooted. This is reproducable in recovery mode to where - according to dmesg - it acts the same.
Today, however, this has changed: It even does not charge the phone when connected to the PC.
But back to the core of the problem: I can no longer connect with ADB. This worked before. And I'm using Linux. So it is none of those strange Windows drivers problems. I tried different cables (including the yet unused original one), different ports, without and with USB hub. So it's probably also no cable issue. And anyways: All cables and ports I tried worked previously.
Somehow I feel it might be a software issue within the phone (and I hope its not a hardware issue) because it works without problems in fastboot mode. The only problem to maybe resolve the issue is either reflashing factory in fastboot (which would work) or sending in for repair. Both options I do not like because I cannot backup my partitions.
BTW: The device is stock ROM, no root.
Anyone heard of such problems?
What's the output of 'lsusb' with device plugged in?
Is "Developer Options > USB debugging" option on?
What's the adb version that you're using on the PC?
It's there in fastboot, and gone when starting recovery or booting normally.

Huh?
Please, answer the questions.
Sorry, only saw the first question. USB debugging is on but should make no difference to see the device in sideload mode. Adb is of course the latest version, updated yesterday from Google SDK.
Plugging the device in shows nothing in dmesg as I would expect when the device is fully booted, no matter if USB debugging is on or off. Tried both mtp and ptp modes. The only outcome is that it no longer accepts the wall charger for charging from this point on until rebooted. It looks like USB freezes internally in the phone as soon as USB data is to be negotiated. It works in fastboot however so the port circuit itself does not seem to be broken.
I just discovered it because I wanted to sideload 5.1. I think the issue had been there for some time as it would explain why I found my smartphone fully charged but turned off sometimes when connected to a PC previously and to a charger later.

Sorry, not Windows, not a driver issue. I need to get the device to show up on the bus when connected. By the way: in Windows it doesn't work either. Same behavior, different system: yesterday I still got the USB detection sound but nothing in device manager, today even the sound does not play. And I can no longer charge the phone after this incident until the phone is rebooted. It only works in fastboot mode - in Windows and Linux. So this strange behavior is even not OS related or tied to a specific PC.
BTW: I'm familiar with the driver issue and know how to fix and handle it. This is another issue.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
Are you running stock kit kat or LP?
Is your bootloader ulocked? if yes which recovery?
If you are Stock and Locked and you are certain its not driver related,
it seems like a wipe/factory reset or clean factory re flash is your only option. or just unlock the bootloader and it will wipe everything.
or
you might try using fastboot to erase the cache and refalsh the factory cache.img. Maybe it would help

Thanks guys... I'll try replacing the USB charger board. It seems pretty easy and does not cost too much. But first I probably wait for the 5.1 OTA to really arrive "over the air" and see if anything changes. Hope it will be here soon. I'll report back about the outcome.
Meanwhile it shows up on the bus again but instantly disconnects:
Code:
[27406.850676] usb 4-1.6.6: new high-speed USB device number 14 using ehci-pci
[27406.948794] usb 4-1.6.6: New USB device found, idVendor=18d1, idProduct=4ee1
[27406.948797] usb 4-1.6.6: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[27406.948799] usb 4-1.6.6: Product: Nexus 5
[27406.948800] usb 4-1.6.6: Manufacturer: LGE
[27406.948801] usb 4-1.6.6: SerialNumber: 065c07e0xxxxxxxx
[27407.933139] usb 4-1.6.6: USB disconnect, device number 14
After this, the thunderbolt icon in the notification bar stays. The device notifier in Linux shows up for a short time and I think it showed MTP is available. Now I have to reboot in order to do anything with the USB port of my phone - it won't even charge until I reboot.

Phone is not recognized when plugged into computer...

So I think something on my USB port has malfunctioned... it won't show up in the device manager when I plug it in.
I have tried the sticky thread on Diagnosing USB Driver and ADB issues in Windows. I have searched the forums and internet and tried lots of driver installs and restart this and that.
Recently this started when I wanted to flash Android 6.0 to my phone. During the install with NRT after each erase and flash it would say Waiting for device, and the only way I would get it to proceed was to plug the USB and plug it back in... Now running Android 6.0 it won`t even recognize my device and won`t pop up the menu to choose your usb connection setting.
I have two Nexus 7, one Nexus 7 (2013), and another Nexus 5... and they all work fine and get recognized by the computer.
Please help, and is this fixable?
Am I going to have to do some phone surgery and change out the charging assembly?...
Does it charge when plugged in?
It charges when plugged in... I guess 2 out of the 5 pins are working.

So you don't have a notification in the notification shade that says the phone is charging? There should be one that, when you tap it, opens up a dialog box to change it to a different connection.

Yeah it charges and it shows that it's charging with the lightning bolt on the battery icon. But not like my other Nexus 5, it does not pops up that menu with the different options (charging only, MTP, etc).

The menu doesn't pop up automatically. You have to tap on the notification. Maybe you need to turn on USB debugging in the developer options?

USB does not recognize my phones

I have a MTCD head unit MX (witson) with Android 5.1, my problem is that the USB port cannot recognize my phones, A note 4 with Android 6.0 (eRobot ROM) and a Samsung GT386T no rooted with stock ROM 4.4.2. The USB port works find with a usb stick, I can play music, pictures, etc. but not my phones. Both have the USB debugging enable.
When I plug a phone it is charging but nothing happens, my note 4 after a few minutes pop a windows saying that there is a problem with the connection MTP and that I need to download samsung Sync etc.
What I want to do is to use the mirror link function.
Any of you know something about this issue?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I believe i read that there is a specific app that you have to run on these to do the mirror link...easy connect, maybe? Did your HU come with an instruction booklet? I was looking through mine earlier and it went over in detail how to setup mirroring through that app.
Yes, when I tried to use EasyConnected is when I saw the problem. The app waits for my phone to be connected, It says that it must be turned on USB debugging, but it is on. Then I checked in the File manager and the USB was not enable there, like if nothing is plug it. If I plug a USB memory it works fine.
I will try today to do a factory reset.
Thank you!

You ever get this solved? My easyconnected never stays connected. WiFi and USB both are garbage.
WiFi randomly disconnects.
USB also disconnects asks me to allow USB debugging every couple of minutes. The phone never remembers the headunit, so it constantly asks me again to allow connection. Must be a crap RSA fingerprint coming from the headunit.

Nope, Still does not work for me. Same symptoms as you. I already tried with 3 differents phones, factory reset and different versions of easyconnected.
I seem to have USB connection working now with only one "allow USB Debugging?" popup, only when I first connect.
What I did was turn wifi off on the headunit. I am not sure why it worked, but I just wanted to turn everything not needed off, and see if the headunit would stop disconnecting all the time. So far so good. I can probably live with one annoying popup, instead of one every few minutes.
Of course you have to keep the screen on the phone on, and the battery in the phone will deplete faster than the headunit charges it, but still an improvement. I had a 30 minute drive today, and the USB never disconnected!

paniqueado, try the da_anton ROM. I just installed it and easyconnect finally works as it should. I just plug in my phone to the USB and it fires right up! One prompt if any on the head unit, and NO disconnects whatsoever.

Phone refuses to connect to PC

Hi,
I got my phone yesterday set it all up and it refuses to connect to PC. When I connect to PC it charges the phone but cannot transfer files. I don't get the popup asking me to charge MTP Mode etc.
I don't even get the option for usb debugging enabled. I've tried 4 different cables all still the same. It won't even let me select MTP, PTP etc in developer options. It just goes back to charging.
is there something I can try before I do a factory reset.
In using windows 10. I've also tried different USB ports but same result.
Thanks

Did you unlock (I mean entered the pincode/password/etc) the phone before connecting it? Sony phones refuse to connect when locked.
Also, does the companion ask you to put your phone in MTP mode? Normally it should display a notification with an option to use MTP (File Transfer) if you click on it.
On my side everything works as it should.
As already said, did you unlock your phone while connecting?

My Z5 Premium connects and works fine. I have 10 usb ports on my pc and I have tried them all.
Does your PC have a USB 3.0 port? Maybe that's a problem, because the phone has USB 3.1 and all the previous Sony phones had USB 2.0. But USB should be backwards compatible, so this might not be the problem.

So the phone acts like you just connected it to regular charger, not a PC.
If so, I can suggest you to connect it to a different PC or to your Z5 Premium via OTG cable to see if the PC is a problem.
When I connect Z5P to my Z3 like that it shows a notification with MTP mode selection. (Z3 doesn't see Z5P in any way, just charges it, but it is recognized not as a regular charger by Z5P, but as a PC.)

It also connects to the computer everytime properly.

i have the same trouble as you... xperia xz, connect to 3pc, with 3usb cables, on 2.0 or 3.0 USB ... it take only the charge, cant transfer any files...

My Pc Won't Recognize Vivo Nex S

Hey guys,
I have an issue that's been frustrating me. I can't connect my Vivo to my pc. I should be fine because I did everything. I uploaded the newest driver (I believe), I downloaded Vivo Assistant to
pc and I turned on USB debugging. When I put on the cable to the phone it does nothing other than charging.
Am I missing something? I'd appreciate any help!
Thanks1
Have you enable under developer setting-select usb configuration-media transfer protocol (MTP)??
By default it's only for charging, actually all the smartphone by default is charging selected and every user must change it to MTP and so pc can recognized it as hard drive.

Just to clarify situation.
Did you do what I've suggested and still your pc does not recognize your phone??
Did you tried different usb cable or different usb port on pc and still nothing??
This has nothing to do with global or any region parameter.
It's simple how every android device works.

See if when you connect to pc there's a message in notification center asking how you want to use USB connection. Select file transfer. You access this notification by sliding down from the top of the phone screen edge.
Also, unlock the phone before you connect to pc.
