Android SD Card Issue - Formated as "Internal" On Marshmallow, Dropped Phone - General Questions and Answers

Android SD Card Issue - Formated as "Internal" On Marshmallow, Dropped Phone
Hey all!
1) Upgraded phone to marshmallow (Moto G 3 International)
2) Formated SanDisk 32GB as "Internal" instead of "Portable"
3) Dropped phone ==> SD card became unreadable
I tried:
- Inserting into another Android phone (didn't work, which I expected)
- Inserted into Windows PC using adapter, using diskpart "clean all". Now works in adapter on Windows PC, but is not recognised by multiple Android phones (including the original phone) as being able to be formatted and used.
Any ideas as to what I can do to make this SD card usable in an Android phone as any type of storage again?
Thanks!

What did you format it as? Make sure its FAT32 and it should work

If that doesn't work check the partitions on it using Disk Management(Windows) or us GParted and delete all partitions and create a new partition.

Hey!
Thanks for the reply
1) The initial formatting was done by the Android phone. Neither Mac's Disk Utility nor Windows Disk Management / diskpart command line tool can change partitions on the SD card for some reason. Neither can they format it.
2) Gparted - I thought it was only a Linux utility on the command line. Is there a Windows command line equivalent? Would it succeed where Disk Management/Diskpart have failed?
Thanks again!

Hello!
Quick update - have been unable to get a computer that can live-boot Linux AND has the appropriate slot to read my SD card. Are you aware of anything I can do on either Windows 10 or MacOS that can solve this?

[Q]What is wrong with my micro SD card? "Read only" error

whenever i try to download something its marked as "Read only"(it does NOT have the little slider lock on the side, its a MICRO SD CARD) but it was working fine just yesterday. how do i fix it? is it corrupted?
when i format it recovers the data, when i manually delete everything then restart my phone the data recovers and when i download a file it only stays on the SD card for about 5 minutes then deletes itself.
yes i searched the XDA forums, yes i searched Google and I've tried every possible solution any website has given me but nothing works that's why i need to make a thread
open it on a computer uncheck 'Read only' from properties.
It seems to me that your card is just corrupt. if it recovers the files after formatting.
try backing up the files and reformatting it to fat, then fat32.
if that doesn't work try a different SD card and see if the same thing happens.

i've tried that already, there is no option to uncheck read only in the properties and i've also formatted it to fat, fat32, NTFS and exFAT still same problem. maybe its time to get a new SD card.
-edit-
nvm i found the readonly check box but the files still comeback after a delete/format
I had this once but after formating it it worked perfectly

[Q] CM10.2: Can't mount USB storage

Just installed cm-10.2-20130824-NIGHTLY-ville.zip. Turn on USB storage doesn't work - throbber keeps spinning forever. Logcat shows
Code:
E/MountService( 677): Failed to share/unshare
E/MountService( 677): com.android.server.NativeDaemonConnector$NativeDaemonFailureException: command '36 volume share /storage/sdcard0 ums' failed with '401 36 volume operation failed (No such device)'
Anyone seen this before?
I had this problem when I accidentally deleted the sd card during a poor flash attempt. Took me a really long time to fix, formatted the sd card in windows after mounting on twrp. Does the phone find the sd card?

Yep the sd card works fine in the phone, it's only when connecting via usb to my (Linux) laptop to transfer files that it fails to mount it.
(I would post to the CM10.2 thread but I don't have permissions...)
same issue here
I just installed cm-10.2-20130824-NIGHTLY-i9100.zip and not able to access not even the internal storage. I go to file manager, sdcard0 is selected at the top but no files are displayed.
I then wiped off everything and installed the previous build cm-10.2-20130823-NIGHTLY-i9100.zip . Same issue. Don`t know what to do..

Ok, so now i`m running the first build for CM 10.2 ( cm-10.2-20130819-NIGHTLY-i9100 ) same issue.
Basically when i open the camera it`s says No external storage available. If i go to Settings->Storage it shows Internal Storage 2Gb in size (this is where my apps are installed). Under that it shows SD Card with 16Gb (this is actually my external SD Card).
I really don`t understand what`s wrong here

I suspect you may have better luck in the Samsung Galaxy S II I9100 forum, as this one is for the HTC One S.
Unless you're trying to install the i9100 rom on the One S, in which case I'm surprised it even boots.

[Q] MicroSD problem

My Pico stopped recognizing the microSD card. Can't view it nor formatting, nothing. Under Windows, Linux, Android recovery... I was using 2.3.5 with Link2sd and now my 8GB card showing up 30 megs and it seems to be locked for some reason (like locked SD card by the lock. but microSD doesn't have any locks) Please help me, what can I do? Could you reccomend someone who can help me with it?
I know that I removed card without releasing it properly from phone... I had some important files there :/
Have u try using windows disk management to see the drive is present or not?
If a partition was corrupted or missing, most of the time it won't be shown on my computer

I tried everything on a pc. Windows shows unformated 30megs sd card, Minitool Partition wizard shows it: http://i.imgur.com/wRLzSmU.jpg
Linux and GParted pretty much the same. I can't format it under pc to get the previous 8GB size...

Z5 No external SD after Marshmallow [NOW WITH FIX]

Morning all
I updated my Z5 to MM 6.0, and i am no longer able to access my external SD card. Card is a Sandisk Ultra 32Gb CLass 10
It was NOT set up as shared storage before the update, and worked fine before the update.
I have taken the card out of the phone and re-inserted it to see if it'll detect it, but that restarts the phone and still does not show.
I've also taken the card out and put it in a card reader on my laptop, contents show fine as they were before the update, and even tried formatting to exFAT to see if it would detect it, but the phone still does not see it.
Is there a fix for this? I'm a bit annoyed at this, and will be thoroughly pissed off if it won't come back as i use it for camera and music storage to keep the phone memory as clear as possible.
EDIT: NOW A FIX
See post #16 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=66090631&postcount=16
I got the same problem, but finally I found that my SD card path changed to /storage/D8F7-09FA, It makes some App can not find SD card, I think it's a bug in the new OS.

My SD Card is now named 2885-BD47 but I still am able to access all content
At least via File Commander and also via Gallery and also games...
Same problem here. In addition, I could not delete anything on the card through File Commander nor format the SD card in the android storage setting (got some sort of partition error). I also connect the card to PC through phone (with card inside the phone and set to MTP) and the PC could "delete" it but the files are actually still there after that when I open them through phone. I don't have a card reader with me at the moment so can't try that. The card was working fine before I upgraded to MM.
I reformatted mine after it was causing the phone to crash after the update. Try normal fat32 and make sure it's an active partition

Done that this morning, still no joy. Reads fine in a card reader, just not in the phone.
Oddly, it does not show at all like DMC_UNIVERSE post, i've been through all the folders and nothing shows with the contents of my SD card.
Really annoyed now
Sony have advised me to try the Software Repair via the Companion software. Still not working, and i've lost all my data. Now have to set up the phone from scratch again!!!
This is a Marshmallow issue, not a Sony one. It happened to me on my Nvidia Shield Tablet after it got the MM update too...

Connect the sdcard to the pc with sdcard usb adapter or reader. Try to wipe its contents, format it with default settings, select quick format. (backup whatever u need first).. After thats done insert the sdcard in to the phone and format it using the phone format sdcard option in settings>storage.
If for any reason after you reinsert your sd card back in to the phone all the contents on the sd card are still there, then simply put.. Your micro sd card is defect. Throw it out and buy a new one. Lol. This is alsoa common problem with sandisk ultra micro sd cards. Sandisk even admit it in a forum i read once, cant remember the link im afraid. But a simpke google search is your best friend for that .
Hope this cleared a few things up for u

Oh something i forgot to mention, if any of you have a custom recovery and rooted device, try this, (as it could be possible your device had put a protection/lock on the sdcard). Try to format the micro SD card within the Custom recovery instead if it doesn't work from within the settings menu.. you'll also have a bit more detail as to whats going on with the card. If custom recovery fails to format the card, then the card is literally defect. Buy a new one

I'm not sure as to what the MM update has to do with it, It could just be coincidence that your MicroSD card just happen to become defected at the time of the update...
although it seems like too much of a coincidence.. there is only 1 way to be Exactly sure, that it aint your MicroSD.. If you have any data on the card that isn't important. Then try this and post back your results....
1. Insert the microSD in to your MicroSD adapter or card reader on your PC..
2. Try to format the SD card within windows either as eXFAT or FAT32 (Try both) Inserting the card back in to the phone after each Format with both File Systems
3. Check the SD card in files within your phone with a file explorer and see if the Data on your SD card is STILL there, If it is.. The Card Is Defect/Damaged/Corrupt etc..
4. If all the data is gone, Then navigate to your Settings>Storage>Format SD CARD (using the phone/device to format it)
Let me know how you Go..

There have many threads and discussions on the sandisk forums with many people having the same issues with these csrds.. Some people even bought 4-5 of them and had to send them all back to sandisk and get them replaced with working cards.. Apparently these cards do not handle being formatted too many times all that well.. Infact, people have been claiming that when they format it once or twice the card still works fine. Then after the 4-5th time, they just give out and just stop working all of a sudden.. Here is the link to the forum
http://forums.sandisk.com/t5/Mobile...sk-Ultra-64gb-MicroSD-Wont-format/td-p/284884
One user claims he used this method and it seemed to have fixed the problem.

I had the same problem as everyone else here on the forum. Nothing worked but this.
You have to format the card using Windows Command level option;
1. Run and type "cmd"
2. Then type; "format L:"
3. Get a cup pf coffee and relax
*
Notes
** L = your sd card drive letter
** don't use quotation marks
** there is a space between format and the drive letter
------------------------------
Give that a try and let me know how it goes..
Good luck guys..
EDIT: I am infront of my PC now, so I am going to try format it this way through CMD PROMPT (aka MS-DOS), and because its a 64GB card, it will take a little bit of time.. So far it's been going smoothly and it's at 13% (roughly 1% every 45sec - 1min 10sec).. It must be doing a thorough format rather than a quick format.. Let's just wait and see if all ends well..
I Will post the results / outcome once format is complete and after I test it in one of my devices..
Edit: no good.

ReEdit:: Well, the good news is, my marshmallow Z5 detects and accesses my 32GB card with proper file pathing, rw access etc..
Maybe taking your sdcard out while updating to MM could have prevented a file pathing corruption, renaming.
But @ the person who's sdcard just stopped working altogether, but you're card done for man. Funny thing is, its mainly sandisk cards. I'm not a fan of sandisk, they are too unreliable IMO..
Right, after a lengthy formatting session using windows and CMD prompt, neither worked (exFAT or FAT32).
I downloaded SD Card Formatter as suggested by this post http://forums.sandisk.com/t5/Mobile...tra-64gb-MicroSD-Wont-format/m-p/285302#M1787, and tried formatting with this (link to format tool: https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/index.html).
I tried 3 times with this, the only option that worked was to use the FULL (OVERWRITE) option within the software. Took a while, but once done, the phone discovered the card when it was inserted back into the phone. It is now recognized by all apps, and for good measure, i ran a format of the SD card from the phone's storage options in the settings menu. No prior contents showing, so all is good.
I've since copied the contents back onto the card, and they are now visible.
Thanks guys for your help!

Glad to see you go it sorted out and working mate..
Just something to remember for future reference, windows disk manager wont allow formatting anything bigger than 30GB to fat32.. You need to use a program like easeus partition master when doing so..
But im sure you're already aware of that .
Anyway. Glad you got it sorted anyway mate..
Well, i tried again using the tool provided in the link. Its a no go. The card is a dud.. I hate sandisk devices i tell ya.. Lol
same happened to me also the Play Services error, ended up reformatting the sd and clean install MM, all workin great now
i found a solution to your problem
try formatting your sd card to ur other phone and try it again on your z5

Adoptable Storage on Honor 4c

Hi There..!
Is there any method to adopt SD Card as internal storage in honor 4c since adopting sd card is one of the new feature in marshmallow. I googled it and read many forums but found nothing. I want more apps to install but not enough space. even link2sd is not working with marshmallow.
Can this be done by formatting sd card manually as private..?
Any help appreciated. Thanks...

Huawei removed the "Adoptable Storage" option just like LG and Samsung in Marshmallow.
Link2SD isn't compatible with Marshmallow. Use Apps2SD - All in one Tool instead. I am using it on Marshmallow and it works!
Yes you can actually manually format your SD as private but it will make things extremely worse. Your total storage will be shown correct (i.e. Internal + SD Card) but the free space will be reported incorrectly (your SD card's free space will be shown as 0 Bytes). Furthermore your SD card will be completely inaccessible within the device. Even though the Adoptable Storage option is great but apps like Apps2SD provide you more flexibility and control over which apps you want to keep in Internal and which in External.
The following commands should be executed using ADB and USB Debugging switched on in Developer Settings. (i.e. turn on USB Debugging and connect your device to computer; open Command Prompt in the folder where Platform Tools ADB/Fastboot are present): Credits to Modaco for posting this solution for Samsung http://www.modaco.com/news/android/...e-adoptable-storage-on-your-s7-s7-edge-r1632/
Your external SD card will be formatted during this process. Backup what's important before following the below instructions
Code:
[B]adb shell[/B]
[B]su[/B] [I]~ root privileges are required[/I]
[B]sm list-disks[/B] [I]~ this will list the available disks that can be adopted; take note of the disk id in output which is disk:XXX:XXX or disk:XXX-XXX[/I]
[B]sm partition disk_id private[/B] [I]~ obviously replace disk_id with the one shown as output in above command; this process will take some time[/I]
Your SD card will be set as Adoptable Storage. Reboot your device just in case. But I still remind you that this whole process is risky and Adoptable Storage doesn't works quite well in EMUI.

Can you please explain the proper method of using app2sd? or give any link to good guide?
root essentials on play market can add adoptable storage
I have used root essential and at last I have the freedom of 16 gb memory in which I can Install apps
U should try it
Its better than manual method and safe also
It does show 0 bytes in setting storage menu but in file manager it shows real storage value

Thanks...

Or you can root your phone, install Xposed framework and then install the module which removes the restrictions on SD cards.

Yes bro but just use a faster sd card for quick moving and creation of files.
Also root essentials makes it poosible to revert the changes.just remember u dont have access to the internal storage anymore by connecting to pc,but u can get back by reverting it so its all safe.

I have used root essential and at last I have the freedom of 16 gb memory in which I can Install apps
U should try it
Its better than manual method and safe also
It does show 0 bytes in setting storage menu but in file manager it shows real storage value

No merging is necessary in emui
Could someone confirm that adoptable storage actually work? I tried to set it up in mixed mode: sm partition DISK mixed 50 with a 32GB SD card. It did seam to work, but at some point when I was installing software I got back out of memory, but for sure I have not used up the 16GB. Any Ideas?
I'm also not sure if you should use the migrate data option in the "Memory & storage" menu or not.
I'm using C675B530 and always running out of internal storage

When i used the root essentials to make adoptable storage on my 4c it needed to download and flash a zip from the recovery in order to work and it end up bootlooping my phone.
the good news is that i fixed my phone just by uninstalling xposed framework.

I would have to apologize, Xposed did not work as it should have so have not tried it again for a while.
Can't recall the name of the module
I definitely would not advise messing with adb unless you know what you're doing.
Maybe if you changed the default save location to the SD card, and transferred all media across?

not with this app, it corrupted my sd card and needed to format it manually, so when i did this i manually created two partitions the first is fat 32 for storage and the second is ext4 to link my apps there and it worked. the app i used to link the other apps is called "link2sd"
