So my usual make sure "keep contracts up to date" is checked in Google+ doesn't seem to be working to get my profile picture in the notification shade on the Pixel. Has anyone gotten their profile picture to show up?
Oh, I got it. Had to clear data and cache of Contacts app, then go straight to Google+ and turn "Keep contacts up to date" off then on again.

Does anyone know how to turn these off? I remember reading the advice on how to do this, and now I can't find it.
I get the audio notification, but then, I have to go and drag down on the toolbar to show notifications and then tap the one for the latest sms, even if I've already answered it.
I'd like to know how to NOT have toolbar (taskbar?) notifications trigger with every sms.
I think going into the app, menu, settings, notification settings, and checking "privacy mode" will get you what you want...
Before under manage labels you could set the level of notification (not importance in the new model, just what happened to each label).
So I could have Primary make noise, flash the light, etc. But then have Updates only flash the light, etc.
Now in Gmail you can just say whether or not a label gets notifications, but to set the type of notifications you have to go in app settings and set importance.
Importance is a great idea but I am only seeing importance for the entire account, no option for setting importance for a label. Is everyone else seeing this same setup or am I just daft? I tried using the support chat and they just turned off all of my notifications.
Haven't figured it out but posting to add my support of this thread/question.
I am not sure if this is what you are referring to but haven't figured this out: With 7.0, I can set my Primary emails send notification via sound and standard notification. I had my Social and Promotions emails set as silent but still receive the visual notification. Now with 8.0, I get sound notification on all emails which I do not want. I don't care about receiving sound notification for Social and Promotion emails.
I checked the "Manage Labels" settings and I do have unchecked the "Notify for every message".
I think it has to do with the Ambient Display but I do not see any settings options for that.
Any help would be great. Not a big deal but if it can be fixed, great!

Pretty sure it's not Ambient Display. Seems that in Oreo Google decided to handle the specifics of Gmail's notifications by way of Notification Channels - such that you can set independent notification settings (incl. sounds) per account but not per label.
I'm trying to work around this at present using LightFlow and using the "outstanding notifications" to trigger based on the notification subtext. The subtext contains the Gmail label, so this seems to be a workable solution BUT the new constraint imposed by Google is the real problem.
So on the htc 10 which is what I am coming from I am able to choose silent notification or different notification level for each app, that seems to have changed. I cant find any way to get rid of vibration or sound just for specific apps within the notification setting panel. In the Twitter app theres nothing specific and if there is I have it off and in the app settings within the phone it just gives me the type of notifications such as direct messages, news etc. No where does it let me turn off sounds or vibrations for the app.
Within the Twitter app in the settings the only option is under Display and Sound, second from the bottom you can turn off in app sounds.
If you go to the app settings (where you would force close or clear data) and tap Notifications it lists multiple categories such as Direct Messages, Related to you and your tweets, etc. Here you can disbale ALL notifications (but moving the slider at the top to OFF) and the checkbox next to each of these turns them on or off completely.
If you tap on the item like Direct Messages (or any other item) you can again toggle them off for that function (same as unchecking on the previous screen) and set the behavior. I have most set to Show Silently, which will not vibrate or make sound. If Make Sound is on, vibrate is available under the Advanced roll up. Review settings for each type and turn vibrate off or change all to Show Silently if that's what you're after.
Hope this helps.

Literally just read this after I posted. I didnt even notice.Well that sucks..I guess I have to try the always on display.
I've spent all day on this. No matter what I try, I can't enable phone notifications. No missed call, text, voice mail notifications.
The setting for "show all" notifications is greyed out and can't be toggled.
I reset all the app settings, reinstalled the app from Google play, cleared cache and data.
Also, the home screen comes on when I get a call or message. I don't want it to. I just want a notification on the lock screen. I know there's a setting for that, but I can't find it.
Help!
Every time a message is received on WhatsApp, all the previously unread messages too show up in the notification area.
Anyone who uses Notification History would see all these old WhatsApp messages before the other recently received notifications. The notification history becomes a mess because of this.
Is there a way to stop these old messages from showing up again (without reading them)?

When a new message is received on WhatsApp, it is common for the app to group the notification with the previous unread messages. However, if you don't want the old messages to show up in the notification area every time a new message is received, you can try the following:
Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Notifications.
Scroll down and select "Group notifications".
Under "Notification tone", select "Silent".
Under "Message notifications", select "No sound" and "No vibration".
Under "Light", turn off the toggle for "Use high priority notifications".
Go back to the main Settings menu and select "Apps & notifications".
Select "Notifications" and then "Advanced".
Turn off the toggle for "Allow notification dot".
By following these steps, WhatsApp notifications will no longer make any sound or vibration, and the app won't use high priority notifications or notification dots. This way, when a new message arrives, it won't group with the previous unread messages, and they won't show up in the notification area again. However, you will still receive the notification in the notification shade, and you can read the new message there.

Lovely. I think this may work with some tweaks.
I will try and 'mute' or archive individual conversations (since some of these are from individuals too) and see if that helps.
This is indeed something for WhatsApp to sort out in their app so they don't show previous unread conversations repeatedly in the notification area. This gets annoying very quickly.
