Pixel 4a cannot turn on phone notifications - Google Pixel 4a Questions & Answers

I've spent all day on this. No matter what I try, I can't enable phone notifications. No missed call, text, voice mail notifications.
The setting for "show all" notifications is greyed out and can't be toggled.
I reset all the app settings, reinstalled the app from Google play, cleared cache and data.
Also, the home screen comes on when I get a call or message. I don't want it to. I just want a notification on the lock screen. I know there's a setting for that, but I can't find it.

Turning off handcent taskbar notifications

Does anyone know how to turn these off? I remember reading the advice on how to do this, and now I can't find it.
I get the audio notification, but then, I have to go and drag down on the toolbar to show notifications and then tap the one for the latest sms, even if I've already answered it.
I'd like to know how to NOT have toolbar (taskbar?) notifications trigger with every sms.
I think going into the app, menu, settings, notification settings, and checking "privacy mode" will get you what you want...

Vibrate on SMS

Hi..stupid question but i cannot seem to get my phone to vibrate whenever I receive a text or notification..can someone tell me where i can go to set this?
I tried going into settings, sound and display but i do not have vibrate as a selection in the notification ringtone tab.
Is there an app i can download that allows me to customize my sounds?
thanks!
the settings for notifications are within each messaging application. if you go to your sms application, hit the options button and go into settings. at the bottom you will find the notification settings, including vibrate and a ringtone selection. notifications for each of your messaging apps are configured this way.

Nothing you can do about that in android. Thats the default android vibrate for notifications. I think it sucks too, its way too short and too soft of a vibration.
What you can do is install SMS Popup. Go into settings on that app and enable notifications on it. It has more options for SMS notifications, like you can set a really long vibration. Just remember to then go into the Android messaging app and turn off notifications there, otherwise you'll get double notifications. This will only help fix the problem for SMS messages. I think android still sucks on incoming notifications for other items like emails, etc.
I REALLY like SMS Popup, its great.
whats the best custom setting. i am trying to set it so it virbates alot and i can feel it

Won't get a notification and/or vibration when I get a message

It has been like this for awhile, but it hasn't really been bothering me I guess until now I realized the importance of it, which I should of done this long ago cause it's been like this for a couple of months. Notifications are on, so I'm not sure what the problem is.
So, with notiication, do you mean just the sound and vibration? Or also the message in the upper tray?
It's not much information. So here are some possibilities:
- you have installed a skin and have not selected any sounds.
- in the accessability men you have set: play no sounds/feedback at all (it's for deaf people)
- You have some kind of do not disturb mode on, without the notification in the tray saying so.
- You have backgrond syncing of, and now apps only sync when you use them. So you get no notification.
- sound settings and vibration settings are off (not likely of course)
- the phone is instructed to play notifications to another device (watch or some other bluetooth device)
- your phone is not working properly. Try to restore to factory default and see if it is something in the software, or hardware. If not working after reset, ==> waranty
EDIT: in the title you say: when I get a message. you mean text message? NOtification sounds can be changed. Sms messages can have their own sounds en settings. It's in the sound menu.

Alright this may help or not, but let's say you message me thru the default standard messaging thru the phone. Usually, the recipient would get a notification of that message, shortly after being sent depending on the area's signal. I, however do not get a notification, vibration, ring, I do not get anything that notifies me in any way that I got that message, so I could being doing whatever on my phone, receive an important message about work or something, and never know about it. However I do have Smart Launcher and the messaging icon does have notification numbers to the top left of it, but that doesn't help really.

Where did you check if notifications were enabled. In settings AND in the app itself? you can also try to clear cache and storage of the app.
Ok I'm dumb notifications were on when I went thru messaging, but when I went thru the application manager they weren't on. Honestly don't remember how that'd happened, but thanks for the help bro.

Calls No Longer Take Up The Entire Screen OOS 9.0.2?

Recently since the update to OOS 9.0.2 whenever I receive a call, it vibrates and if the phone is unlocked a heads up notification appears, but the call no longer takes up the entire screen unless the heads up notification is tapped. Whenever the phone is locked, in order for me to answer a call I have to unlock the phone, pull down the notification bar, and scroll all the way down to the Phone notification in order to pickup a call. I checked both phone settings and system settings but was unable to find any setting related to the display of the incoming call screen. I also tried wiping cache from both the phone app and through stock recovery, cleared storage from the phone app, and made sure "Display over other apps" was allowed, but the issue persists.
Anyone have this experience or know of a way to troubleshoot the issue? Any help would be greatly appreciate.
Yeah, same to me, but happened randomly.
Solution found. I asked on the OnePlus forum and they pointed out that there are additional options in the notification settings of the Phone app. When you tap on Incoming Calls (*Not the Check Mark*) you would tap on Behavior and make sure to check Make Sound and Popup on Screen

Question Hide incoming call popup for Google Phone app

I am using Google Phone and Contacts app (Samsung apps are terrible to use, although they look better).
When receiving a phone call, on top of the full screen page I see a notification popup: how can I disable it?
If I go into app's notification settings, all is enabled but greyed out, so cannot change.
Thx
Anyone here?

click on right arrow and disable notification
As said, not possible, all greyed out and default to on
You could try with Auto Notification and Tasker
Do you have Google dialer installed? Can you show me how your notification settings look like (enabled or greyed out)?
They are greyed out on Samsung dialer too
I know why... Google is forcing some properties to fixed so that users cannot change notifications. Problem is that they should fix this behaviour which I believe is a bug.
Strange cos my Xiaomi phone does not have this problem: same app version, same settings greyed out.

Can you pls try to also set phone app as default for calls and ask some one to call you, to see if you get the notification? Keep screen off when waiting the incoming call, and try several times.
Thanks

I'm getting the notification. Always did
Strange... It shouldn't be there
Maybe it's because of "floating notifications" in settings. Check it.
By the way I get a similar notification while in another call/Viber call/Skype call even with Samsung dialer.
Google dialer is fugly.
NO, floating notification is to enable the floating popup when minimizing the dialer.
It seems as if when receiving the call with screen off, Google dialer detects the screen is already on, this displaying the full screen + the popup. As a matter of fact sometimes the popup does not show, but when it does (most of the times) it's annoying as hides that caller's nam

I have also had this issue for a while now, and could never figure out how to fix it either. I finally decided to try turning off the "Appear on top" permission setting in the app info section of the phone app. That seems to have done the trick, as now I only get the top pop up when I get an incoming call, then when I answer it goes to the full screen portion like normal. Maybe give that a try and see if it works for you.
