XZ on Verizon? - Sony Xperia XZ Questions & Answers

I know this is not officially supported, but does anyone know if this will work with a Verizon SIM? I know in the past, CDMA radios were required for Calls and Texts, but with VoLTE, shouldn't CDMA be unnecessary at this point? Can someone try throwing a Verizon SIM in it and see if it will work. I'm trying to find a Note 7 replacement here. The rest of the Verizon phones SUCK.

I'm really wondering about this too. I'd jump from my S7 Edge to this if it could really work. lol

Oh yeah, if any of you Xperia XZ owners could be so helpful in using this tool from the Verizon website: https://www.verizonwireless.com/bring-your-own-device/. I think this would help see if we could use the XZ on Verizon network. If any of you guys do it, can you post screenshots (blacking out any private info if you may), I'd really appreciate it!

Verizon uses CDMA which Xperia phones so not support. They only do GSM. I suspect a Verizon sim card would not find coverage in an XZ.

But there is LTE support. If you have an XZ in your possession, can you try using the tool in the link I provided to see if it works?

To be able to use VoLTE, you will need to enable HD Voice or Advanced HD feature for your line and also the person you call has to have to same feature enabled. Both callers need to be in LTE coverage areas for VoLTE works.
So it isn't always working for you if you don't have CDMA capable phones.

All voice calls still go through the CDMA network UNLESS, you are on Verizon and have HD voice enabled on your phone. I
know, Verizon is still using 800 CDMA in almost every cell site. This this is so VZ customers can call other carriers..
This became very apparent a few months ago when Verizon had a CDMA network outage on the west coast and we could only call people with in Verizon that had HD Voice, no one else.
If the XZ does not support CDMA (can someone confirm?) that would mean NO "Cell Network " phone calls. Data should work fine if the XZ supports LTE 700 c, 1700 f, 1900
Kinda getting tired of this, I really wanted an S7 Active and now the XZ.
One of these days I am going to jump ship. I. just have a bit of "data coverage anxiety" is the only thing holding me back...

The reason Verizon keeps their CDMA network because they still have 3g devices which are CDMA only.

Yes but, not necessarily the reason why VZ is keeping CDMA.
3G (1900Mhz CDMA) will begin to get faced out sometime next year. This is not a secret, it's actually common knowledge. In fact, some areas already don't have 3G coverage.
(800Mhz CDMA) Voice will stay at least for 2017. This is because VZ's VoLTE aka VoIP is not quite ready to go.
Some guy already tried using a VZ SIM on a Xperia XZ, didn't work.
Search YouTube for: "Sony Xperia XZ Verizon CDMA Test"

CDMA faced out all over the world last year except VZW. Some areas do not have 3g coverage doesn't mean there is no CDMA network there. There is a lot of VZW basic (CDMA) devices in the market now.

For this guy, it could be the first time he tried unlocked phone.
At least he need to add APN settings for Verizon network first. It's not gonna work what so ever since unlocked phones do NOT have it.

If you're not connecting to a tower, I don't think APN settings are going to help you.

Of course you don't however, didn't that phone connect to the network briefly at start up, did it? Also it's only video so it can't prove xz doesn't work with VZW. It's my opinion even though I'm not with VZW.

Just to be clear; that's not my video. I'm no expert either but I really don't think APN settings would cause the tower to drop connection. AFAIK APN settings are just for data and MMS services.

I understand it's not your video and you knew APN is for data and mms. However, you forgot that in mean time, most VZW devices use CDMA for voice until they introduced HD voice (VoLTE) to have both voice and data work at the same time.
So without correct APN settings, nothing is gonna work including voice for non-cdma devices.

I saw your post also on the verizon regarding the XZ working with it. That's cool man! I bought the XZ based on the LTE network which I was betting that it would work but no good. I currently have a z3v working with HD calls and stuff so that's why I believed that XZ would work.
Thank you in advance!

APN configuration
Hi! I found out this configuration on a Google search claiming that XZ works with verizon.
Just Google for
1587_13_verizon_apn_settings_for_sony_xperia_xz
On "apn gishan net" and you will find out. I will try it as soon as I arrive on my vacation destination (currently driving)... Lol

Not that simple...

Droid 2 Global with 3G on Rogers

Here it is. Get a unlock code and it works on Rogers network, with 3G.
Just remember to set APN first.
So it is confirmed that Verizon is not messing up the 850/1900 bands outside US.
Canadian Droid lovers, you are safe.
Btw, this phone seems to have some serious reception issues. It only shows one signal bar in my house, while other phones would get full. Hope moto could fix this via a software update.

Thanks for confirming this for us. We hear in the US are still having those problems with AT&T and T-Mobile. Hopefully we will find a workaround soon.
Thanks so much. Thats what I've been searching for. BTW, where did you get the phone? Can you just go to Verizon store and buy it outright without signing any contract, not even the month by month plan?
Got the phone from a friend in the US. What he did was activate a month to month plan, and cancel it right away.

The unlock code is so you can use non-Verizon (Vodafone) SIMs. Rooting is being able to have full read / write access to the entire phone. Rooting alone will not unlock the radio to use 3rd party SIMs.

Has anyone else noticed reception issues with this phone? I was waiting and waiting and waiting for the Milestone 2 originally and then this one came out and I want it sooooo bad. I need to upgrade from this HTC Magic but I don't want to buy a phone with hardware flaws.
I tried Googling it but all I'm finding is reception problems on the Droid 2 and the Droid X. Not a lot on the D2G but it seems like the entire Droid line has people reporting reception problems.
Is it just the number of bars showing thats a problem or do you also get frequent dropped calls?
I heard from a friend that Android 2.2 includes a new Battery Manager that reduces power to the radio when you're not making or receiving a call and that's probably why the number of bars showing is low when the phone is idle and there probably isn't really a reception problem unless calls are being dropped. Can anyone confirm this?
It's a long drive from where I am in Canada to the nearest Verizon store so I was going to make purchasing it part of a road trip to visit friends in Seattle in a couple weeks if I can get confirmation that the reception problem is not hardware related.
Any confirmations or advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Reception hasn't really been an issue for me. Seems acceptable. Battery life marginal though but I had the same issue with an HTC Desire

Buy it on prepaid. Its $394 plus $104 of other stuff, total 537.

APN settings are same for 3G and EDGE. Are you sure you are not forcing EDGE somewhere in settings? Or maybe battery manager?
I figured out the problem. I had the phone in "gsm only" mode. When I switched back to"Global" mode in network settings I instantly got 3g and even "H". Thanks for the help anyway

[Q] No HSPA+

Hi, I recently got a HTC one X and a Three Sim. According to the network checker I'm in the ultra fast area, I don't ever seem to get a HSPA+ 21MBIT Signal, I'm using a app called Network Signal Info, the max it goes to is HSPA 14.4MBIT, I checked the specs on my phone and it does support HSPA+ 21MBIT.
Anyone know why I never get the HSPA+ signal/speed ? My brother on the same network in the same area gets HSPA+, he has a Samsung Note 2.

You want to make sure you have the right APN settings. Are you rooted or on stock software? I don't know how that career works, but for AT&T, different sim cards with differently. There are LTE sim cards, HSPA+, sim cards, or just plan EDGE sim cards. You want to make sure that is something as well. Can you provide a bit more information? HSPA is bascially the basic 3G service (at least here in the states). Also, what spectrum is that career using?

Hi, thanks for your reply, I've checked the APN settings and they seem fine, I'm using the stock firmware (Android 4.1). My other brother who's on Tmobile has a HTC one S, he gets the HSPA+ 21, i put his sim in my one X and it doesn't go above HSPA 14.4, he tried my sim in his and he get hspa+ 21, so it seems the issue is with the phone.
I'm about to do a factory reset, hopefully that'll sort it out, if not i'm going to have to contact HTC.
I still don't know of you are rooted or not. You may want to ruu to determine if it is a hardware issue. If not then contact HTC.

Hi the phone isn't rooted. The Reset didn't work, sent a email to HTC. I really don't want to root the phone, will wait and see what HTC say.
Alright then. Not going to advise rooting. If you have the 3.18 software then I don't know what could be the reason.

My software number is 3.14.401.31.
HTC Replied saying:
"Thank you for contacting HTC regarding your HTC One X.
My name is X and I am a Technical Support Agent for the HTC Written Team.
I'm sorry to hear that you are experiencing difficulties with accessing HSPA+ on your device.
In regards with this, there is no network within the UK that supports any speed above 14.4MB using HSPA. If there has been a carrier modification applied to allow DCHSDPA then it may be possible although the HTC One X and HTC One S do not support this.
If it is the HTC One SV then this would allow DCHSDPA to function if the modification has been applied by your network provider."
So how can they explain why others get HSPA+ and I don't? an inferior phone (HTC ONE S) gets HSPA+ with my sim but I don't, even with the sim's swapped i still don't get HSPA+ 21mbit.
Couldn't tell you. But you have the international one x, so this is the wrong forums for you.

LTE not working?! Manual Programming codez (updated)11-7

I got my Nexus 5 yesterday and finally got it working. I live right next to a LTE tower and I can't seem to get LTE.
1. Checked PRL
2 Checked Sim
3 Checked Profile
4. Called sprint
5. Checked network settings.
When i put the phone in airplane mode, and back off. It jumps to LTE for 2 seconds then 3g
Anyone having these issues ???
*manual re-fresh*
*#*#72786#*#*
after that, phone will reboot and "re-fresh network"
Also, my phone wen't into global mode, which you will need to change that back to LTE mode.
- Still isn't fixed ...
will report back ..
Manual Programming Code
*#*#675#*#*
edit: MDN = phone number
MSID: split
UPDATE
doing *#*#4636#*#* and selecting LTE only does indeed make LTE work both visually and functionally, with a loss of voice of course, but as soon as you go back to LTE/CDMA auto it'll require a reboot to take effect and LTE is once again not working.
(from sprint forums) - confirmed
I'm having these issues with Sprint as well. Thanks for your updates. I'll let you know if I learn anything.

Here is how I fixed it for myself on Sprint.
Settings > More > Mobile Networks > Network Mode
Change Network Mode from Global to LTE.
It will still connect to Evdo, ehrpd and Lte and switches between them as needed.
Luckily I haven't got hit with 1x since trying this out. My area has maybe one or two spots where I'd get 1x instead of ehrpd.
Settings hold after a reboot. I was driving to work today with my phone playing my music and it seemlessly switched between 3g and lte on it's own.

Mine does that too.
BUT, nothing in the settings has been able to fix this.
How long since you activated? Mine would not connect to lte at all until last night... about 30 hours after activation.
Now it connects fine. I tried everything including flashing the modems posted in dev, swapping sims, trying every different network config and nothing worked except lte only mode which then kills 3g and voice.

I too am having the exact same problem as the OP. I can change the setting from Global to LTE and the phone will connect to LTE for a few seconds before switching back to 3g.
I am coming from the Note 3 on Sprint that got great LTE here at home, about 16mb down and 4mb up but I am hoping this gets resolved quick.
I'm on T-Mobile and it favors sticking on HSPA+ instead of LTE. If LTE gets down to one bar, the phone decides it's time to switch back. Compare this behavior to my Nexus 4 and it would stick on LTE come hell or high water. I would stay on LTE while in the office and this phone refuses to even get on LTE in the office. I don't get it.
Some have suggested this is a "power saving" feature, but I call BS on this because my Nexus 4 wasn't even intended to have its LTE radio used and LTE really didn't impact my battery. It felt like it lasted the same as it did before I enabled LTE on it.

Still stuck on 3G after activating around 72 hours ago.
To follow up on the Nexus 5's "special" SIM card. I'm also skeptical about this. I'm using a SIM from a GS4 (part #: SIMGLW206R) which is the same SIM mentioned in this post about activating the Nexus 5 on Sprint: http://qbking77.com/google-nexus-5/activate-nexus-5-sprint/.
However, I called a nearby Sprint store to ask if they had any SIM cards available. They said yes but when I mentioned the Nexus 5 the representative seemed to think there was some additional procedure for coupling the phone and the SIM. I don't know any more about this. Could be misinformation of course.

sure it does if when doing your research like I did on mine I see it works on Band 4 which is T-Mobiles band for LTE. I get speeds up to 36dl and 19up with my ONe.

I am sorry I may of had stock rom for like an hour... I think it was 4g symbol but I have a custom rom and it shows LTE. I noticed that some of the same lines in the build.prop for LTE on my nexus was not in here for my OPO.
What state are you in?

But I think I got it figured out - You are right it works in LTE - when i had 4G on screen i used the app you send me link for and that app shows LTE as network. So the bottom line is that 4G stands for LTE in stock rom and it is possible that Nexus has a stronger radio than One so in some areas i do not get LTE.
Anyway Thanks a Lot for your help - got a little worried ( Got the phone just yesterday). I think i will keep it stock for a little while before i will root it
The radio performance seems the same for me as my N5, I'm living in NYC.
Do note that "LTE" on a Nexus 5 is displayed as"4G" on the OnePlus One. Ensure that your APN is on T-Mobile 4G LTE IPv6 (fast.t-mobile.com), for some reason when I started my phone it was on MetroPCS instead.

nah root it its more fun that way and fyi they just came out with an update to 4.4.4 stock from what I have been reading. I saw this posted in earlier.... I guess you will be getting an update soon.
One suggestion if you plan on rooting and unlocking bootloader I suggest doing it now since it will wipe everything when rooting... There is a method where you wont lose data but it will not unlock your bootloader

To OP: How old is your SIM card? Have you ever received LTE signal on a previous device? I receive LTE on TMobile 4G perfectly fine, I just wish the "4G" showed up as "LTE" as my Nexus 5 did. I guess I could personally go skin it to say LTE instead but its just cosmetics.
And I completely agree with unlocking the bootloader, even if OP doesn't have any intentions to rooting/flashing, at least do it now so when you do decide to do it then you will be able to back everything up without having your device get wiped.
Edit: OP also go into dialer and type in *#*#4636#*#* then go into phone information -> scroll down -> under set preferred network type: LTE/GSM auto (PRL).

Thanks for all the info - changed network to set preferred network type: LTE/GSM
My concern is llosing warranty, every phone i had was rooted - this is just new toy so I am concern about loosing warranty
In your experience what is the best way to unlock/ root - saw few all in one tolls on the forum - any advise
PS: how can Thank to all of you for help?
Found the thanks button - thanked all of you Guys for help
I thought the same thing (coming from a Nexus 5). I was worried that the OnePlus One did not support LTE but it definitely does. For some reason Cyanogen did not include a separate LTE icon as what's found on the Nexus 5 and most other LTE capable phones.

For sure its weird how they didn't adopt "LTE" and used "4G" instead. You can always go and change it to "LTE" with some apk hacking. Pretty easy to do.

So does your phone get "4G" now? You can verify in Settings -> About Phone -> Status -> Mobile network type -> should be LTE if the top right says "4G"
The best way to unlock/root is to NOT use a toolkit. Yeah a toolkit is easier, but honestly unlocking a bootloader is not hard and the skills you obtain by doing it yourself are important. You won't lose warranty, you can always relock it and use the bit mod and OnePlus will never know. Plus OnePlus encourages the whole custom rom scene since thats why they have a Development forum on their official forums.
Just follow the guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2788632 if you have any problems or questions, just ask here and I'll help (or someone else can)

I called AT&T to have the IMEI changed over to the OPO since I was on the Nexus5. CyanogenMod doesn't technically come with LTE icon, personally I can careless but it does look nice at top lol. And you're correct on my device under Mobile Network Type it shows LTE but icon on top shows 4G.
4G is LTE
H+ is HSPA+
3G is ... 3G
edge is edge :crying:
The first speed test in my sig is my LTE speeds using my OPO... Pretty typical, maybe a little faster than my old Galaxy Note 2. :good:
how does one change it to the LTE symbol?
I'm just curious. If you know 4G means LTE, whats the difference if it says LTE? Not trying to be an A-hole...just curious.
If you run the CM11 nightlies on the OnePlus One the phone will show LTE in an LTE area. Only the stock CM11S shows LTE as 4G.
I would think that people on xda are more well informed.
Carriers like to change the official terms to make you "buy" into a "technological" leap.
Most of the roms outside North America uses 4G (instead of LTE). This is all about marketing.
HSPA(+) are 3rd generation networks while LTE is the 4th generation.
back in the day:
iPhone = edge speed 2.75G
iPhone 3G = HSPA 3G (7.2) speed
iPhone 4 = HSPA+ 3.5G (carriers in north america tried really hard to change this to 4G)
iPhone 5 = LTE 4G
See this article (how At&t tried to play this game)
search on google as i m not able to post links yet.

I agree fully with Line 1 - especially here we should do more homework before posting...
my oneplus signal is terrible compared to my n5
Sent from my One using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
mine is better then g2. Do note that your phone may or may not have the bands your provider has for lte. This you should have checked before you got the phone.
Also delete apn and reboot.
If it works better something went wrong there. If it doesnt check your providers website if setings are all correct.
If they are you might need a new sim/ or lte enabled via your provider.

[Q] VoLTE on Unlocked (T-Mobile)

I have the Unlocked A9 and I'm using it on T-Mobile USA.
Setting--> Mobile Data--> Voice over LTE is checked.
VoLTE worked with original firmware, but with the November Security Update (639737.6), it no longer works for me. (VoLTE = calls made under 4G LTE. When I make phone calls now, it changes to 4G even though I have 4 bars 4G LTE).
Please let me know if it works for you. Thanks.
I'm still waiting for my unlocked A9 for use on T-Mobile, so I can't give you another example.
I have read that there is no such thing as 4G voice, only (4G) VoLTE. (4G = LTE = data only.) If it is 4G (i.e. data) and doesn't support VoLTE then it must be using a 2G (GSM) band for voice. If it is showing 4G when you are talking then I think it must be VoLTE. At least that is how I understand things.
I'm on the latest ota update for the unlocked version and VoLTE works fine for me. I was concerned unlocking the bootloader would change that but i just completed that and calls still go over lte
In fact I've left my phone in lte only mode for the past week

Thanks for the input. Based on our info, I'm surprised that VoLTE does not work for me. When I make a call the 4G LTE goes to 4G meaning that it's a GSM call (not through data.) (LTE Discovery confirms this, as the LTE radio shuts-off during the call.)
I might factory-reset my phone and start from the beginning. Not happy, since this is hours of work...

Have you tried different cell sites? Perhaps your phone finds the current lte connection to be unsuitable for volte.

Could be, but I have a Samsung Avant sitting next to it, and the Avant's VoLTE works while on my A9 it does not. Speed test results are similar for the phones, so I know that the connection is good.
Just got off the phone with T-Mobile, they transferred me to HTC tech support. HTC wasn't much help (just reading from a computer screen). The tech promised that a level 2 support person would call me in the next 24-72 hours.

Thanks for all your help. When I read that you are on the latest ota update and your VoLTE works, I suspected it was my phone. Well, I factory-reset my A9 this morning, and VoLTE works now.
BTW, no call from HTC. You would think that they would be interested in helping buyers of their new flagship phone, but nothing.

I think they are buried. I have tried emailing them this week about accessories, also tried their chat support, and just nothing. And still no shipping date for my unlocked garnet of 23 Oct. I really don't think they were ready for this introduction and the demand that followed. I just hope the phone is worth it.

I like the A9 a lot. Coming from a Samsung S4, the signal strength is OK, but I am very pleased with the battery -- it last all day for me. Screen is bright, camera is good, and it has the latest Android.
