Blackberry Z30 Bootloader? - General Questions and Answers

Hi
I have a Blackberry Z30 lying in my drawer, and I have been thinking of trying to make an Android build for it. Yes, I realise this would be a massive undertaking, but considering the parts in it are fairly standard, drivers shouldn't be an issue. The larger issue is the bootloader. My particular Z30 is a little special, in that it is a pre production device. However, I have no idea how to even check if it has a locked bootloader. Has anyone seriously tried to look at any BB10 devices, and how one might go about loading an Android build onto one? I'm looking at this as a long term side project for learning and to have fun.

very nice try

I have the same BlackBerry Z30 device, waiting for 10.3.3 to see what's changed in the OS. Do you think it's possible to build for it an updated Android runtime based on Marshmallow or Nougat with Google services that works alongside BB10 OS instead of old Android 4.3 runtime that our devices have now?

To be perfectly honest, I would think that's much harder than building Android for it.

I think that would be hard too. you might take a look at Blackberry Link app and find how it works with this Qualcom device, I have no idea how to, but someone might know, that aplication loads the firmware when you get a BB bricked. But in my personal opinion its a great device, the BB10 OS is perfect for my needs, so I think tha would be better finding solutions for Google services on the BB10. a lot of them can be patched but there are a lot of bugs on them. In my opinion that will be a good start.

DUAL Boot Android and ios5

Hi Friends,
Have anybody tried to dual boot android with ios5. It will be great if someone can do this.
While searching came across this
http://code.google.com/p/bootdroid
http://bootdroid.blogspot.in/
Any solutions?
I don't think that's possible.

You can't run iOS as a rom because its closed source. It would be impossible to port because all the libs are different even though its based off linux
IOS is based off of Mac OSX which is based off of *Unix*
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy Brick using XDA
so the info on the links is just bull**** ?
BUT: it is possible to have your android phone "transformed" to look like ios with miui rom and iphone theme.
that still doesnt give access to the appstore but its as near as we can get to ios looks
Got none of the required devices I would have tried otherwise :/
i have a desire hd but i dont really think this is legit.. probably just some guy hunting payperclicks
This will never be possible. IPhone and android phones havedifferent processor architecture.

It IS possible to dual boot an iPhone with Android and iOS, the project is called iDroid (idroidproject[.]org) but some of the iPhone jail breakers (like @chronic) are creating a linux-based OS (called Magenta) that replicates iPhone OS 1.0, my source says that it currently runs on ARM7 hardware
Magenta is an implementation of Darwin/BSD on top of the Linux kernel. It is made up of a number of kernel and userland components that work together. It is fully binary compatible with iPhone OS 5.0 (as in, it uses the same binary format).

The final goal is probably recreating the iPhone OS 1.0 stack. I think this is a pretty feasible goal, considering the fact that there are so many open source libs that can be used to replace the proprietary libs used by Apple. Just as an example:
* CoreGraphics -> Cairo
-> FreeType
-> libpng/jpg
* Celestial -> Various open source media decoding libs.
* UIKit -> Chamelleon

I think so, they say the aim is to run iOS
The project does not wish to build a platform that can run Apple’s App Store apps; it appears to just aim at running iOS.

As you can see it isn't for running App Store apps, but if it has root access like a rooted android, then you can just put any app on the device..
Like a Cydia app (for the ones who don't know: Cydia is an App Store that you get when you jailbreak your iPhone)
Dual boot iOS and Android. Hm... why not to try Linux instead? iOS is not flexible as Android and what's the point of it? Also we can start porting Windows 8 and other stuff.

iOS 5 is designed to run only on apple's specified hardware design. It is next to impossible to have apple software running on android hardware, but there have been reports of android running on apple hardware. This all involves a lot of lib tweaking, proper execution of binaries, andjust plain coding genius.

Look at post #9 It IS possible if someone tries to get it on an android with a bit porting of the Magenta-project. And yes it is possible to run android on iPhone (post #9 as well) it is called iDroid (as mentioned in post #9)
here is the source code from cronic, who is an apple dev, who is working on porting it for us, http://crna.cc/ , if any dev is wishing to finish it off with his android intel
why doenst just buy an iPhone ?

For those asking "why?", I found this thread because I would like an Android tablet, but I'm worried I'll want the latest app or game and it will be only on iOS for too long before going to Android. I'd like the best of both worlds, someday (perhaps when iDroid is out of alpha).

If you want the best of both worlds, let me give you some suggestions:
Buy a jailbreak-able iPhone (4S or 4 recommended) jailbreak it on iOS 5.1.1 (if that's the current OS) and then with Cydia you can customize your iPhone as much as you want.
Buy both of them (which I have done) and enjoy
But do not expect iDroid to be stable anytime soon, for now..
That was a bit off-topic, sorry, but I hope this helps!

Ubuntu like Android is based on Linux so that isn't a surprise that it runs on the Nexus. Linux OS have been dual booted on windows computers for a long time so seeing Android dual-booted on Windows phones isn‘t a surprise either. Also those are dual booted not really replacing your android OS. The pic your talking about is a Ubuntu mobile OS so it should actually replace stock android like a custom rom does. I will also add that iOS is closed source software so you risk legal action doing that. The thread you linked to is closed.

Ubuntu Touch for Nexus Devices, will the OS be portable?

interesting to get it to work on our device, there's a quite detailed tutorial on how to do it here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Porting but to be honest, i don't think it's worth the effort trying to get it to work on our tabs for now.

". The OS is more smooth than android. "
LOL, Now how in the world would you know that since there is not yet a single fully functional version of this on any device.?
ubuntu is, like ANdroid, simply yet another derivative of Linux which is based on Unix born in 1969, now 44 years old OS
My brother owns NExus 7, and yes it is smooth and better than android. Though after sometime of use, it starts lagging as its only a DEVELOPER PREVIEW

ignore him, he's just trolling. been doing that on some thread lately. about ubuntu touch, i do agree that it is at least looks much better than android, but it still depends on a lot of android's components. it still uses android's surfaceflinger, the audio/video are still using android's abstraction layer, and the kernel itself is still android's kernel. it would be interesting to see how does it compare to android on our device. someone have ported it to samsung s3, search for the thread to see how it perform on exynos devices.

But first, we need to unlock our bootloaders right? And yes i've seen that UBUNTU touch compilation uses CM 10.1 bases.

i don't know if all of the Tab plus are the same, i'm assuming that most of them came with unlocked bootloaders, if there's any locking mechanism at all. i'm pretty sure we will get a running Ubuntu Touch on our devices sooner or later, it's not impossible to be done, but how functional it will be is not for me to talk about since i'm not a developer too.
so, there's a port being goin on for 7.7 and TAB 2.

For TAB2 and not for ours? :[
It Seems they've done a good job porting Ubuntu touch os to tab 2.

Almost everything working.
could tizen be ported to different devices like the ubuntu touch?

Phones for alternative OS'

I'm really tired of Google, Microsoft and Apple and want to get away from them. So i'm wondering if there's any people here who've actually tested some of the phones with the new operating systems, like Ubuntu, Firefox OS, Tizen and Sailfish, and who can recommend some phones.
I've been using Flyme os on my Nexus 5 and I enjoy it very much. I agree that Stock rom is kind of boring.
I tried ubuntu on Nexus 10 about 6 months ago, but android worked better on it. Had some issues like battery draining fast, not so good performance and some application not working and lack of support application.
Thanks guys. But aren't there any phones not made by Google that have active alternative-OS modding?

I've heard of the Alcatel onetouch fire that runs firefox o.s. by default, and also Sony had offered the same o.s. for the xperia e. You can check them out if you wish.

Nope. There's so many phones out there that may or may not get one or more of these OS' that i felt it's best just to ask what people think is the best combination. I have a Galaxy Note II LTE for example, but it has seemingly no alternative OS developer interest whatsoever.

Hmm, there's many different Onetouch and Xperia models. I would like a mid-budget or better phone really. Ubuntu for example needs quite a powerful phone and it would be nice to be able to run it.

My phone may stop working next year

Hello,
I have a LG L90 D415 that I bought back in 2014 and is working perfectly. I was using it with the last official update sent by the manufacturer (Andorid 5.1.1 Lollipop), but one single APP stop working and when I check for that APP, for it to work I needed to have Android 6 Marshmallow. Problem was that the manufacturer stop supporting the unit and they decided not to provide any other update beyond 5.1.1. Luckily I found that there was version 7 Nougat for my unit as an AOSP with Linange OS. Me, being an ignorant of android configuration, had a hard time installing it but finally was able to make it work. If not for that APP that stop working I would never change the OS but at the end I was happy, it was like having a new phone. I was able to install the APP and make it work. Then few days ago I read this article:
Devices may stop working next year: Here's why
The article is talking about devices that won't be able to work due to outdated security certificates. Specifically about andorid devices using Android version 7 Nougat (the one that I recently install on the phone), the article says:
The most vulnerable devices
Helme said users of Windows computers won't need to worry, as Microsoft has built in constant updating of certificates. Web browsers on most platforms get certificate updates regularly. And because iPhones get system updates so frequently, "I wouldn't be too concerned about this problem if I was an iOS user (I am)."
"But it looks like Android users might have some concerns in the not too distant future," Helme added.
That's because as of April 2020, nearly 40% of all Android devices visible to Google were using now-unsupported Android versions such as Nougat or earlier. (These statistics don't include Amazon Fire tablets, Xiaomi Mi phones or other devices that run non-Google versions of Android.) Many of those older devices may soon lose the ability to connect to most app servers and websites.
Since I have an old unit it seems that there is no interest from the LinageOS people to build at least version 8 of Android for the LG L90. So I need to ask, What are my options? Is there a way to find updated security certificates?
Please advise.

If the manufacturer stops supports a device and if the device is no longer supported by custom development in the android user community and if security updates are no longer supported by the manufacturer or by custom android developers, the only other options are to support the software development yourself, if possible, or get a new device. You obviously won't be able to do the software/security support yourself so that leaves you only the option of getting a new device.
By the way, whoever wrote that article is an idiot iOS user. Yes, Apple will continue to release security updates, but, not for all Apple devices, they don't offer updates/support on their older devices. Apple doesn't want its users to use Apple devices more than a year or two, for this reason, they discontinue support on those older devices to force its users to buy newer devices.

Thanks,
I definitively won't be able to built my own, I'm just a dumb ignorant normal user, I don't even know how I was able to pull it out, I'm talking about rooting with magisk and installing the Linage version 14 ROM. I read and read, ask a lot of questions that were never answered (nobody seems to be interested). It was like my android lifetime achievement and something that you are able to do only once in your life.
I was checking the phone status and it says that the last uptade that I have installed is Linage OS 14.1 (Andorid 7.1.2), with android security patch level 2019-01-05. I hope that that helps somehow. I also found that there is another ROM of Linage OS using Android 8 (Oreo), for the LG L90 but it says that it is unofficial, so I feel uneasy installing it. It's a shame, the phone is working so fine, it is my first and only smartphone and has been with me... well... more than seven years.
