Nexus 5 - Camera focus woes - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
I have a Nexus 5 which on the whole is running really well still - currently on stock Marshmallow.
I'm having a few issues with focussing and getting decent images from the rear main camera. I have to tap several times for the screen to show an image in focus before taking shots. I can get passable shots of images where the focus point and subject is close up but really struggle to get a clear image when the subject is further away - in fact it's almost always out of focus.
I doubt it's a software issue and more likely hardware - especially as I'm a total clumsy cluts and have dropped the phone several times
I'm just not sure what I should look to replace - would it be the rear camera glass or the actual rear camera itself? I think the latter but just wondering what advice is out there from you all before I jump the gun.
Cheers all!

AT&T HTC One X Jelly Bean Camera Problems

I've noticed that the updated camera software applies some kind of post processing even if you have image adjustments set to default with nothing set to +/-. The resulting image looks different from what actually appears on screen at the time of the snap. Can live with this but the big problem I'm having now is with self portraits. I'm having this problem indoors with mediocre lighting, I have not had the opportunity to try this outdoors.
The front camera now appears to have some kind of face recognition (which can't be turned off, have not seen an option for this but it does exist for the rear camera). What happens is after snapping the picture, you'll visually see the screen apply some strange lighting effect - when I review the self portrait the face is lightened and the eyes are darkened to the point that I look like a zombie. Needless to say the image is completely messed up. If you manage to take a self portrait with the camera not locking on to your face with the "visible white box cue" the picture will be snapped as normal like it used to be before the Jelly Bean update. Anyone else having similar probs?
It looks like I'm solo on this particular issue. I happened to also have wifi problems after the OTA update; the connections would drop within minutes. Ended up doing a factory reset which resolved the wifi problems but the front camera is still buggy -- basically once the face recognition white box engages and starts tracking your face the picture will become screwed up. It's possible to get a normal picture by doing something to avoid having the box engage like doing a very close up shot. Either way I'm hoping I can get the front cam working like it used to before this update.
Front facing cam pics are not something I do often, so I just tried it. The effect I see is not quite as horrific as you describe. But the captured shot does seem to have a slight exposure issue. And like you said, the preview looks fine, but the captured shot gives a slight white pallor to my face.
The first couple pics were pretty ghastly, maybe more like the "zombie" effect you described. But I realized the lens was pretty dirty (again, I use the front facing cam very seldomly). I cleaned it off, and the results were much better (just slightly pale, as I mentioned in the above paragraph).
Cleaning the lens seems obvious. Although, maybe some change they made to how the JB camera handles exposure makes it extra sensitive to dirt/dust on the lens.

True, cleaning the lens did indeed help. Less of the zombie effect now! I guess the face bleaching helps to hide blemishes

Blurry Photos when taken up close

I was trying to use the this barcode scanning application to scan a barcode and for some reason the main camera does not want to focus when anything is only several inches a way.
I thought it might be the app but when I tried it in the stock camera app I noticed that the camera cannot focused on anything close up.
Is anyone else not able to get focused macro shots?
Yes, it's impossible to focus on a object that is close. I don't think it's a problem but the (****ty) way this camera focus. I wonder if any fix regarding this and the slow focus can be done by ROM devs.
Nexus 6 Camera suffers blurry close ups too

As you can see in the above link this guy has the same exact problem with focusing on close object that my Moto Maxx has on both video and still shots.
He RMA'd his phone and the replacement works perfectly fine.
Isn't the camera on the Nexus 6 the same as on the Moto Maxx?
Can anyone else confirm if they have this problem with the Moto Maxx or not?
Thanks
SOLVED!
So I was able to solve this problem by opening up the phone and replacing the rear camera module itself.
I purchased a Droid Turbo XT1254 Camera Module on Ebay for $25.00 shipped.
Took me about 15 min to install using a Droid Turbo Teardown Youtube video as a guide.
Now I can take photos of barcodes, labels, that are clear and about 3 - 4 inches away.
Hope this helps anyone with the same problem.
I also solved this issue by replacing the camera as rbalfury suggested but I'm not happy with the performance of the camera. I blame it on the software side since it doesn't allow me to manually focus the damn thing and my lg g2 could take awesome macro shots and could see very fine details with it. This camera focuses automatically and before it finishes focusing you can see for an instant when it's adjusting that it becomes crystal clear but then blurs up the shot a bit which sucks. Need a camera software with manual focus but no luck yet.

Over sharpening of camera image

Can anyone confirms this? Almost 4 units i tested from sony stalls has this issue.
The photos taken by camera turns out to be overly sharpened, with lots of artifacts.
Turning on or off image enhancements does not help.
I am seeing this as well. And most of the reviews I saw also reported this.
Currently I am trying a few third party camera apps to see if they do the same
Haiz.. Why can't they make the camera right for once?
I concurred this. Mine focused good. I learned a trick that you actually have to tap the screen then press and hold the camera button on screen or side until it is clear. When i first got it, all my photos was focusing on the wrong spot. However, now with that trick i could get sharp images but zooming in they look very blurry and a lot of noise.
Do you experience this is good or low light? You do have to work a little bit harder with the camera settings as the light drops off to get the right image. And use the designated camera button too rather than the on screen one.
Good lightings... Not to mention if its poor lighting conditions. Guess have to wait for a new firmware.
Yep so much sharpening in all lighting conditions. Hoping for a software update soon.
Here is samples pictures from my XZ. It has undoubtedly the best selfies camera under daylight. Lowlight shooting takes a bit to get used to it. It was bad as first but if you toggle on "tap - focus and brightness" in setting it will improve tremendously as it uses it light sensor to automatically brighten the photos. Overall, I'm happy with the camera. It beats Iphone 7 Plus and on par with the S7Edge. My beef with the XZ is the small size and 3GB. I would prefer 5.5 and 4GB for a $600 phone. But if you can get it for $450 or $500, this phone is definitely worth every penny.

I am not talking about selfies. I am talking about the main camera. Very bad quality here. So fall 8 sets i have tried, same issues
Noticed this myself, not impressed with the image quality. Seems to be worse than my Z2. Hoping when they eventually drop Nougat it'll iron out some of the issues.
About blure and noise, increse ev to +0.7 or 1
A very good example of xz camera samples. You can guess which photos are by xz. The oversharpening of images when zoomed in.. Soo much artifacts.

Doogee mix 2 - camera

Hi guys,
I appreciate that this is a specific Mix 2 question but couldnt see a mix 2 section yet to post in.
I recieved my Mix 2 about a week ago and my first impressions are that its a great phone - it does everything I want....... apart from when it comes to the cameras.
Firstly, the quality is pretty bad and a large step back from the oppo find 7 I am switching from. Both front and rear facing cameras fail to properly focus and always seem to take photos like there is a dirty lens, a sort of soft look, most obvious when photographing text, which just isnt sharp at all.
Secondly, it appears that the second rear facing camera doesn't do anything - is it even real?!? I believe its there for the optical zoom option, but even when you zoom in with the camera app, you can still cover this camera and it has no effect on the photo, therefore it is not used.
Any ideas on how to improve the picture quality? I presume its going to be a case of waiting for Doogee or some developers to take this device on to update the firmware......
Thanks

A new update of the firmware is being "cooked" to solve this problem.
I know that will be released soon.

It would be great... Camera performance is the main issue of the device. On the other hand, all the other features are quite well
Sorry to put this query here. Even i haven't got any place to right it down. I also have a same problem. Rear camera not working. Bought this phone specially for camera specifications. When will be the updates release to make the second rear camera work. Even 8 MP Nokia camera takes better picture than this 16 MP. And there are many bugs. Many apps crashes. And on YouTube I have seen many videos which shows many camera app showing 4k video recording option, but I think that was after update and I still haven't received it.i show that video 1 month back.
New update from company has improved the camera lil bit. But still not a usable one. And it keeps on hunting for focus in video.
From morning all Google apps are getting closed by itself. Please help to solve the issue in mix 2
no updates have improved the camera on this phone for me so far. Taking photos of static images is ok - maybe 6/10, if I use whatsapp to take a photo of anything it always appears very soft and a little blurred. If I try to take a photo of my cat.....no chance, the shutter is so slow, unless the object doesnt move at all you cant capture the image. I do like the phone and previously havent been bothered about camera specs, but that was when all my previous phones could take decent pictures. This might be the reason I get rid of this phone in a few months, it turns out a decent camera is a must for me - I was spoilt with my Oppo find 7, which had an incredible camera

+1 about camera perfrmance, i bought it to do a review and the camera is the worst thing in an otherwise decent phone. I did a comparison with the honor 7x, which has a much better camera at the same price.
Hdr+
Hallo guys, there isn't a procedure to flash Google camera hdr+ on this smartphone o mediatek CPU. I founded everything for Qualcomm but nothing to mediatek.

Camera focus ?!?!

Hello!
I've just purchased an used Pixel 3a, so far so good. I like the phone. I have some problems, and I think they are software related because the main camera , and the selfie camera have slight focus problems, very often they are out of focus, I tap on the screen and the image is slightly blurry, after 5-6 tries and even 10 tries I get an crisp image, more often on the selfie camera, but on the main camera they are problems too. Never had this problems on my previous Pixel 2XL.
I've tried clear cache and storage on the camera, same problems. I've installed cstark camera Px , same focus problems.
Any suggestions?
I'm thinking to switch to galaxy s10, same form factor bigger display.
Front cam has a fixed focus so you need to keep it at a distance.
Rear cam needs cleaning often, specially when you are not wearing a case.
No problems with tap to focus here so far, latest update and i do a lot of pics.
I hope this helped
