[Help Needed] Data (Photos, Videos, Documents) Recovery after soft bricking? - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I need your help. Sorry for the long post.
I have a OnePlus One. It was running on CM 13.0 (Android 6.0.1). I had TWRP and MultiROM installed.
I have had an issue where whenever I flash a zip file in TWRP, the phone will show an error after installing the zip: "Unable to mount storage". This appeared in red color on the screen right after showing the progress of the zip installation. The phone worked fine and all the flashed zips worked great as well. However, the error that appeared every single time when I flash a zip file bothered me. So I tried to fix it. (I know, if it's not broken don't fix it, but sadly I tired).
I followed this video to get rid of the error => (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7yDPszoQ5s). However, instead of getting rid of the error, I ended up with a huge problem. My phone couldn't recognize the data in the internal storage. It showed that the internal storage was empty. When I tired to reboot in TWRP, It said: "No OS installed are you sure you wish to reboot". I realized that the video I followed was for a different problem and that I ended up with the same issue the video was trying to fix! I tried every single option the video suggested to fix the problem and nothing helped.
I connected my phone to my laptop and downloaded the latest CyanogenMod zip for my phone and I flashed it. when I rebooted my phone I got a screen that asked for my password. I typed a random password (I discovered later that the phone will accept any password and say it's correct). I got the following error: "Decryption Unsuccessful... The password you entered is correct, but unfortunately your data is corrupt... To resume using your phone, you need to perform a factory reset. When you set up your phone after the reset, you'll have an opportunity to restore any data that was backed up to your google account...Then the only thing I can select is "reset phone." ". I pressed the reset button on the screen, the phone rebooted and showed the same error. Then I tired flashing PAC ROM and I got the same error again. Then I flashed OmniROM and the phone worked! It didn't show the error.
I have a Titanium backup for all my apps and I also have a nandroid backup for my previous ROM (in my memory stick using an OTG cable). However, I don't have any backups for my internal storage (photos, videos, documents... etc). I am guessing that these files are still in my internal storage. I didn't copy any new files to my phone because I think if I do, then the phone will keep replacing my old files (that I can't see) with the new ones.
My question is: Is there a way to get back these old photos and videos from the internal storage? Note that I didn't delete these files, but the phone can't read them. Also, I checked the nandroid backup that I have and the file system type of the previous ROM was EXT4. My current file system type is the same, EXT4.
Thank you for the help!

sdcard wont format

i have a odd issue.
Last night the MIUI 1.10.7 ROM froze up with trinity kernal. After the reboot trinity kernal on boot screen kept freezing.
I did a full whipe re-installed MIUI 1.10.7 flashed nertchy and i was good to go.. once booted up as apps where getting restored from the market random crashed started and now everything force closes.
that is not the issue.. the issue is that i want to do a full whipe again.. how ever i can not do anything with sdcard. i have tried every possible format method and coping files to sdcard...
all it ends up is restoring the files and the file that i have copied to sdcard is gone wth :S
i can boot the system back to what it was even when i re-flash it over again still same system there trying to download files and crashing..
i have reached the end i dont know what it possible could have changed :S
help?
You could try and lock the bootloader and unlock it again. That might reset everything and get it working for you again. I had a problem with the SD card and I wasn't able to mount it in CWM to access any files so I locked and then unlocked the bootloader and everything has been working great again
no go.
earlier i tried pushing some files to sdcard using adb successfully. this only lasted until the phone was rebooted out of recovery and files where back to w/e they where before.
i pushed an filed called update.zip tried flashing.. as if i never tried.
what it seems to me like is that the whole system is preventing updates/changes to the system :S :S
no matter what i try to do to reinstall or format it goes back into its old form with exact same files and exact same problems..
basically unable to flash and delete :S:S
have you went to storage in setting menu and hit erase then erase everything?
yes,
i have tried all of the following:
- factory reset from settings
- unmounted sdcard and formatting from settings
- delete files using file explorer (deleted them but comes back on reboot)
- uninstalling application (error occurs)
- moving application to sdcard from internal storage (not enough space error occurs)
- doing factory reset using cwm
- doing individual deletes using cwm
- creating backup using cwm (error occurs, cant get chm5)
- locking/unlocking bootloader
- mounting sdcard to pc and deleting files (same thing files delete until reboot then restore)
- adb remount (remounts nothing happens)
- adb push file, i can push a file and its only there until phone reboots
- installing pushed file update.zip (miui 2.1.x) installs but still goes back to corrupted miui 1.10.7..
i don't remember what else i have tried. every time file deletes it comes back after reboot. as well as the system.
i can flash a new recovery mod and it will stick but nothing in terms of deleting files or installing new system files.
new development.. i have tried installing update.zip from fastboot menu
and this is what happens:
sending 'system' ... Okay
writing 'system' ....failed (remote: write fail)
it almost seems as if i lost all write access.. is there a way to fix this?
(fix permissions does not fix this problem)
cheers,
as the Nexus s has no actual physical SD card but it purely refers to the storage partition, I am guessing you have some how corrupted the partitions settings and possibly damaged the memory as well, i have also seen from other threads where this issue is nearly identical that the PCB board being changed fixed the problem.
sorry to say either way your Nexus S may need to go under the knife,
hmm, this was the last day i played with it...
i'll have a look tomorrow for a bussins that will take it and try to fix it
cheers, for all those who tried to help.

How long to format SD Card

Today I had about 2 dozen sdcard folders that could not be read by Titanium, MyBackUp Pro, Linda Manager etc. Did nothing since a TWRP backup last nite that went fine.
Tried to wipe card to copy a bu from pc but got notification in windows of corrupted files and they would not delete. Those included the above mentioned folders. Also, no luck with trying to use TWRP to wipe card.
Didn't try Fix Permissions with TWRP as didn't think that would apply. So I unmounted card from pc, still pluged in, and selected Format SD Card icon in TWRP.
It stopped on Verifying partition sizes after it started the Formatting /sdcard sequence and has been there for over 20 minutes. So, much easier with a removable card. What would you suggest I do next. Can't take that long to format with TWRP, or can it--?
I normally use SD Formatter and it did take awhile. But, when using the recovery like AmonRa etc only a couple minutes. Obviously not a full format.
Thanks
Ken
Well, I had to back out of formatting and format with sdformatter. Then sdcard wouldn't mount so I did the clear storage method and got data back on sdcard.
Problem is now after reflashing twrp and cwm the bootloader screen still shows the "clear storage" choice. So, even though I can boot into recovery, I could not see any bu's in twrp to restore. I did in cwm and restored Zydroid 3.3.5.
I will see how it runs, but why is clear storage still an option in bootloader, I thought that disappeared with a custom recovery--maybe not??
And why no bu's showed in twrp to restore, but did in cwm-- The only thing I did different was flash twrp thru fastboot as opposed to thru Goo Mgr originally.
Two final notes then I will retry twrp soon and move on:
I don't pay a lot of attn when backing up or restoring. I did watch this time and saw cwm back up recovery as a default. Twrp has that as an option I never selected--not sure it matters--any thoughts--still trying to figure out why twrp showed no bu's when I selected restore, not even the backup folder. But, the folder showed in File Mgr.
And do you guys with custom recoveries show a Clear Storage option as is available with a stock recovery. I don't remember seeing one. If so, why flash a stock recovery to Clear Storage and get sdcard remounted--
If the Clear Storage shouldn't be there, I still may have recovery issues. Although, all good atm on cwm--
TWRP and CWM has different backups iirc, they can not flash backups made in the other.
thanks, but i may have not explained well
I understand that and it is not the issue
problem was i reflashed twrp after restoring my sdcard
when i went to restore my twrp bu thru twrp the twrp bu folder never showed, just a blank screen after tapping restore
thing is i never tried a restore with twrp, so don't know if it ever worked--
solved one issue thru experimenting
you can't change bu name that shows in file mgr. it didn't have a date and I gave it one. then it doesn't show in recovery when you select restore. I did that to give it a date. but, found out when viewed in recovery after tapping restore the date is there not the HT24HW403671 name.
saw on some guides with cwm that clear storage was mentioned, so guess it was always there and didn't notice as never used it
back on twrp and will see how it goes
one question--if you can't change bu name, how do you differentiate btw diff roms in recovery bu folder--keep only one and put rest on pc?
All Resolved--NP with the Folder Names, didn't know the dated bu's were inside the HT folder--
Hopefully no more sdcard unmounting on its own--
I'll update this incase anyone following or has or will have a similar issue
I haved tried two differnet roms Trickdroid/Axiom (have not gone back to LeeDroid yet). Have run twrp and cwm. Deleted SD Card Speed Boost. Have tried mounting thru phone and twrp.
I still get missing/corrupted sdcard folders from DCIM to Downloads and alerts of folder doesn't exist and need to reformat card. I have reformatted with sdformatter and thru phone. Will lose personally made ringtones.
I have gone back to Axioms v01s kernel from the oc vo6. I had that running at 1890 and 1809 and 1674--no help
Just fastbooted the v01 so will see
Seems like a mounting issue, but stumped--maybe card is shot--
Anyone with similar issues or ideas your comments are welcome--not at phone replacement stage yet--
I do unmount properly
running v01 kernel for a day, no issues--1512mhz
did a good backup, all ok--no lost folders
when I open two windows panes on pc to copy bu to pc from phone and backup sdcard to phone issues start
the right pane which is the phone storage pane starts to lose the Removable Disk H disk icon, which is phone. Pane flashes and goes back and forth btw showing card contents and not showing H disk. Also showed empty H folder as nothing on card. I unmounted and remounted phone to pc and all was there. Unmounted and checked card contents with phone not connected to pc--all ok
Beginning to wonder if it is usb port problem--something is losing connection and/or unmounting remounting on its own. Maybe why some folders got corrupted before--still confused--
get popups on pc occasionally that state devise can perform better on a differenet port and sometimes device icon does not show when phone plugged in. I have changed ports, on my third one that only was used for mouse, will see. I have once or twice reinstalled htc drivers--

[Resolved] Issues updating CM10.0 to 10.1 (T-Mobile GS3)

So I have had CM10 on my phone for probably 8 months now (almost since I got the phone) and have had no issues with the ROM whatsoever.
I got a notification about an updated version of CM10 today and went ahead and downloaded and installed it, but when I finished the update, I had no personal data left on the phone, could not set up accounts to recover the data, could not (and still can't) recover backups through ROM Manager, and cannot recover backups through CWM. I get an error message which I can't remember at the moment and leads to a bricked phone upon reboot until I do a fresh install of CM10.0.
I read after I started having the issues that I wasn't supposed to directly upgrade from the CM Updater with an S3, but it was already too late. Supposedly the issue is something along the lines of an emulated version of my phone's internal storage? If that makes sense. So whenever it's pulling a piece of information it's looking in the spot it should be in, but on a non-physically-existent SD card, essentially. That's what I gathered anyways.
I have a 32gb external SD Card that is also in use with my S3. I have tried moving my ROM Backups to there and recovering from the External SD Card, but the same error message occurred, although ROM Manager was at least able to find the backups after they were moved (I also had to change the setting and request that it prefer to look through an external SD Card).
So I have a usable ROM as far as the software itself, but I no longer can use any accounts or information that is stored with them or any of the same widgets (not a game-breaker) as I was able to previously. Is there a way to fix this? I've never just been completely stuck before >.<

Just to be clear, you're saying to try and flash CM10.0 and then do not update when prompted from the notification? The other part was clear enough lol.
Edit: Tried the above and did not fix the problem, but I didn't use fastboot specifically because I have a Samsung phone.
The error I'm getting is "unable to mount /system" when I try and restore a backup.
Bump. Still haven't figured this out.
Problem solved.
Re-flashed CM10.1; doing full data, cache, and dalvik wipes before and after the flash; and the problem was corrected.

How I unbricked "Decryption unsuccessful" The password is correct but... (Apps2SD)

How I unbricked "Decryption unsuccessful" The password is correct but... (Apps2SD)
Hello, I don't usually post in tech forums, I usually the guy that only reads,
but this is the time when i could not find the straight answer to my problem and had to google the solution out of similar posts, so I decided to glue everything together and write my solution to this particular situation,
so I might save a lot of time to someone who got in exact or similar situation.
Sorry for my crappy English, but here we go.
What this post trying to solve:
You stuck at boot loop: "Decryption unsuccessful" The password that you entered is correct but unfortunately your data is corrupt.
and how to make it work Apps2SD with Huawei P9 SD card with enabled password protection.
Basically my Huawei P9 (EVA L-19) with Android 7.0 Nougat got running out of internal space, and i am really a heavy user on apps. Kirin 955 handles just fine as long as it has at least 10Gb of internal free space.
I have SD card 64Gb, but huawei stopped support, native move apps to SD, long time ago. My device is rooted, so I was searching for a solution. There is few apps that can transfer your internal memory apps to SD by using root, but the one that actually worked for me is Apps2SD. The thing is, my SD card is password protected (Huawei native function) I want to keep this function in case of device getting stolen.
Problem is, many third party apps that move your apps to SD, does not know anything about Huaweis SD card password feature. In fact (as far as i tested) only Huawei phone allows you to enter password and show contents of SD card, no PC, or for example Samsung phone will recognize this SD card.
So i was messing with Apps2SD, partitioned my SD card in to 2 primary partitions, 1- exfat, 2- Ext3. It works kinda fine, but after reboot, there is delay, Huawei unlocks SD card after main boot part, and Apps2SD does not understand this and show that it failed to mount second partition.
In this case, Apps2SD starts giving you solutions, one of them is this ADVANCED mounting option. It does not tells u about any dangers, nothing really.
I chose that option to see if it will be able to see second partition contents faster, rebooted - boom bricked.
You see the message: "Decryption unsuccessful" and asks you for decryption password. It might be SD card password, not sure, it does not matter, because you can type ANYTHING and it always say:
"The password that you entered is correct but unfortunately your data is corrupt". And gives you only option: fully data factory reset. Now hold your horses, dont press that. I just knew that this is bull**** and no way
my personal data is corrupted, its just some hadshake issue. (I was right i fully recovered everything up n running)
Assuming you got in this mess, your device must be rooted and you probably have TWRP recovery, cause Apps2SD work only with rooted devices.
To recover from "Decryption unsuccessful" boot message and restore all data and settings:
Got to TWRP recovery by holding power button and volume UP (after phone vibrates, hold both buttons 2sec more and then release power button, and then after 2sec more release volume up, cause if
you do this too fast, u will end up in wifi recovery by Huawei, and it wont work anyway cause your device rooted).
Then go to advanced and file manager, locate sdcard folder (this will be internal memory, not external), you should be able to see all of your personal files! Copy them to flash drive by connecting with OTG.
What we gonna do now is: do a full nandroid backup: TWRP, backup, check: BOOT, SYSTEM, DATA. and do a backup to flash drive connected with OTG or hard drive if it works for u.
After backup is done, go to WIPE, select format data, select DATA partition and see what original file system it uses. Now format in any other system, then reformat again to your original file system.
DATA partition somehow lost its encryption handshake key and this caused the problem, reformatting fixes it.
Now do a full wipe as if you would install new rom, wipe: system, data, storage, cache, dalvic cache.
Restore your previous nandroid backup, reboot to system, now your phone should boot with all the apps and settings just as you left.
You might be missing some pictures and other media in main storage, just connect your P9 with usb cable to pc, and restore previously backed up media from flash drive manually in pc interface (copy paste, replace all),
some small minority files might wont copy, don't worry about it, Im not sure but they are mostly indexing files, all ur media will be back in place.
Now, how to make Apps2SD work with this configuration?
Don't use that advanced method to find SD cards second partition, use any of first 3, the 3rd one worked for me just fine, cause its SU library based one.
Don't move your apps fully to SD, or they will "disappear", move everything except APK, ODEX, DEX (Lib is optional, you usually can move this one just fine). SO basically app core will stay in main storage but cache and app data will be on second SD card. This way, after you reboot your phone, you will have to wait like 3mins and App2SD will link your files to apps itself just fine. It might will show some errors right after reboot, but after Huawei unlocks its card, files will be linked, and apps wont be "gone" cause app core still stays in main storage.
This way i managed to save a lot of space and move most of app storage to SD card, P9 became very responsive, even in 2018 this is a really fast smartphone.
Sorry for a messy post, I'm not a writer, but I hope this helps to someone!
Thanks a lot, you saved my phone-config! ) This step "...and see what original file system it uses. Now format in any other system, then reformat again to your original file system." was unclear to me, as TWRP didn't give me the option to choose a file system, but in the end it worked out fine without just as well.

How did you run into this issue?
If it was due to updating Magisk to v19.x (on Huawei with Nougat / EMUI 5)?
In that case, there is an easier solution, just flash back Boot img with Magisk v18 1 and everything will continue to work as it did (without any need to reformat, factory reset, etc), see

I'm not entirely sure what caused it, but I suspect Apps2SD just like in the original post (I installed/tried to use it shortly before the problem occured).

Stuck on "Phone is Starting"

My phone running on RRos 8.6.0 and I forgot the Pattern so from twrp I deleted the
"locksetting.db"
(My device didn't have any files named as the key for to deleted)
and from users I deleted
"setting_fingerprint.xml"
"setting_face.xml"
and booted to system
and now my it is stuck on "phone is starting"
Touch is working fine and I am able to access notification panel and turn on and off the tiles and go into settings.
I even added a new Pattern so that the deleted file gets created but then when I went to add fingerprint the sensor is not working as in its not reading.
also in apps(from settings) there is no option for "open". There's only clear cache and clear storage.
also I tried wiping dalvik art cache.
also device wont show on pc for transferring data while in twrp or even when phone is booted and I choose File transfer from notification.
What shall I do ?
Thankyou
Happened to me the same way, then I install stock rom and everything works fine.
Hi,
Same problems and same exact cause. Installing stock rom did not solve it.
Any other ideas?
Thanks!

Did you find any solutions?
The only solution was to format Data partition (including storage) and lose everything in the process, sadly.
If I remember correctly I was able to copy stuff from data partition to external USB via Recovery mode. But this was long ago, don't remember all the details... Just that I had to delete the data partition.
