Cleaning the memory - General Questions and Answers

Hi,
how do you typically keep your memory clean and free?
Do you use memory cleaning tools, or do you just re-install the custom rom regularly from scratch?

What typ of memory?
Cache? Dalvik? SD card?

Hi, what I meant was that from time to time there's quite some data accumulating, also for the different app updates etc, that needs a regulat clean up.

I see
Often I experience also that app installation is canceled due to memory shortage, while from the memory settings there should be well enough space available.
Any solution?

If u talking about installing from play, ya it needs a lot space
I guess (not sure) editing the playstore or framework-res apk can solve it
If talking about manual installation, it needs jst a littl more space than apk

What I don't understand: acc to my settings I have >150MB free in internal memory, but somehow google play is still unable to install any further app.
Should I consider a different app store which does better, or how could I download apk files for manual installation?

Depending on what rom I'm using, the misc folder will have anywhere from 3.5gb to 6gb. When I go into folder to delete items nothing shows that amount at all. I have tried backing up to SD card and formatting and its still there.
Any idea on how to clear out these items for the extra space? Or if they are important and I need them? What are they exactly. Thanks in advance.

Just realized after testing I'm formatting SD card. Not phone storage. Any idea how to format just phone storage without losing apps installed.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
What folder do you mean? Whats the path? Cuz I have no 'misc' folder on either SD or Ext SD
There is no folder but when I go into settings and storage it show misc files using 3.9gb and when I click on it doesn't show what's taking it up or where it is.
Attached pics

I have no idea then. I just checked my storage and I have no 'misc files' like that. Try finding the lost.dir folder and emptying that. It's the equivalent to the recycle bin on windows.
Download the full version of sd maid. Learn it first, research all the options. It works wonders for cleaning up all useless files / data etc.

If you tap that misc. file, it wil show you what makes up that number

That's what the second screenshot is. After I hit Misc thats the screen that shows up. This doesn't add up to the 3.95gb it says and that pic shows all, there is no scroll.

It's all the "stuff" that comes with the rom. Where it says "system memory" is all the programs, ect. My misc is at 5gb with that same 3.95gb dedicated to whatever the rom installed.

I would assume any that come with bloatware. Being yours is a custom rom I would think any apps that come with it would be under apps. But since verizon and samsung have a bunch of stuff that you just can't uninstall by default they probably just hide them under misc

Have you run an AOSP ROM? Is the 'misc' files still there then? I'd flash back to my TouchWiz ROM right now but I'm in the middle of downloading a ton of shiat.
The funny thing is that I wasn't even sure TWRP did it. Im going on what someone else said. I know the stock recovery does and CWM doesnt... that's about it... lmao

Thanks but this only shows what I have downloaded. Even if I don't download anything on a fresh install I still have this misc folder.
I'm thinking it has to do with the bloatware

I am facing similar issue. In my case I have had a small 500 MB left on my Phone then ran CWM nandroid backup which failed due to limited space (and I lost those 500MB), then I freeed up some 500 MB space and installed TWP recovery and tried backup with it which failed too and I lost those 500MB too. Then I switched back top CWM recovery and moved pictures to external SD-card now I have got 800MB but I am sure there are some temp files two previously failed backups. Any ideas where to find them? I thought they would be MISC files which are 4.51GB on my SGS3.

Just a small update, I am not sure what it could change but after fiddling with hidden and system files I just realised that Misc files dropped to 605MB.
Sorry guys but I really do not know what happened, I did not even restart the phone, not sure!
BTW I am on [XXUGMK6][4.3][CWM] Sammy's 4.3 BTU (Deodexed/Rooted/Zipaligned/Busyboxed/Init)

An update:
Having almost 5GB free space I tried to backup my phone again which is failed backing up the Data (not sure why CWM 4.0.x.x does do it) and Misc. Files grown to 5.56GB leaving me 282MB free space only. I check the content of /clockworkmod/backup folder and it is empty! Any thoughts?

[Resolved] Titanium Backup saying not enough space

I've flashed a new ROM and restored the app from Google Play.
Among them, Titanium Backup and it's Pro key.
First I've saw the error "not enough free storage".
Then uninstalled both the app and the key. Reinstalled.
Wipe dalvik cache and cache...
Nothing works more.
I can install but it always shown Version Pro (donation) - Thank you! but I cannot backup anything.
P.S. I do not have an .odex file in system\data folder (as suggested in other threads).
What can I do?

yes, thats where i was, but it did not detect the legacy location and give me that option like it normally does. Tried editing the post after I figured it out, but I had to wait 5 minutes then didnt care any more lol. In the screen where you select to scan or use current, the back button goes up a level in the directories, so I just had to manually navigate to the proper location

Sadly This did not help me either. It's a root app — why not use root power to write to the SD card?

Several fixes have suggested so far and different fixes have helped different people. So here an additional option wich migth help.
I moved the backup folder from it's previous location to /storage/B3EC-1310/Android/data/com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup/Backup using adb shell which is a lot faster then using a file manager which moves every file in a directory separately.
The B3EC-1310 is the ID of the SD card which will be different for every SD card.
Then I changed the location in Titanium Backup itself as well. That works for now but is still not perfect. I guess I need to change from the AOKP rom to a rom which does not protect the SD card.

[Q] Titanium Backup not working on 4.4.2

I tried backing up from Titanium Backup, but whatever I tried, it kept complaining about insufficient space.. Tried changing the backfolder to either /storage/0/TitaniumBackup and /storage/legacy/TitaniumBackup, but it still failed. Had to resort to backupping to a USB-OTG stick..
Any settings I need to change or something?
May be you bro, I tried it on my N5, 4.4.2 and I had no issue. I'm assuming you do have plenty of space? You have 6.1.4.3 running?

I was able to delete the Titanium Backup folder from/storage/emulated/0 But now as I cannot make a backup it can't make a new folder and I no longer have a backup folder location, even if i make a folder via Root Explorer it still can't detect it....
thanks

Try downloading it from some other site and see if it works.
If you are rooted, clean dalvik cache
well i already clear dalvk cache using lucky patcher. and i already download the apk from different site and its main site. but still the problem occur. any idea?
In that case, uninstall google play, Google play services, and delete "hosts" from system/etc directory.
---------- Post added at 10:56 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:55 AM ----------
Then again normally install play store and services, and make them system app
---------- Post added at 10:56 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:56 AM ----------
Hope that will work
i already do this step today using lucky patcher but too bad the problem still occur. i cnt install certain app only. really need the blackmart app for somthing just afraid this problem occur in future which will prevent me from download really importnt app.
.
still thanx everyone whobreply. just hoping theres some solution about it.
Did you ever figure this out?
Best way is to clear your cache

What is the best way to remove Android application?

Hello, I am aware that there are lots of third party uninstallers for Windows which delete program leftovers after they get uninstalled and I wanted to ask whether there exists something similar for Android. Even after uninstalling an application I get an error sometimes, mostly when l am trying to install an application. I get the report that the old one is not deleted. I went to the root section of some of the applications as well as deleted data. Seems nothing helps. I hope there is an application which can delete the leftovers automatically (something similar to SD Maid's corpse scanner, just the working method).
Thank you in advance!

Android uses solid state memory, defrag is useless on Android, android doesn't store data the same way PC does, the data doesn't get "scattered" across the "drive space" like it does on PC.

It seems to me like your issue is caused by the fact that you have uninstalled some system apps and now you're getting errors associated with those apps.
If this is what your issue is, the solution is simple.
Anytime you add/remove/install/uninstall system apps, immediately after you're done installing/uninstalling/modifying system files/apps, remember to boot into recovery and wipe the cache partition.
Adding/removing/modifying system files/apps confuses the system because it is looking for data that isn't where it is supposed to be or it's finding data that is there but doesn't know what to do with it because the app it is associated to is no longer there to use the data.
Wiping the cache partition then rebooting allows the system to reload everything correctly into cache so that everything works with the changes that you made.
